[soft music]

Good work, guys.

Guarding the swim leg of a triathlon is no easy feat. It's amazing with all these swimmers flinging elbows every which way

and pushing, that nobody comes up lame, bleeding or unconscious.

A two mile swim, 26 mile run and 120 on a bike,

those guys were some serious athletes.

Athletes? They're masochists.

You realize they don't brake for anything, not even the restroom.

That's a pleasant thought, JD. Thanks for that.

All we have to do is get these markers back to race headquarters

and we have 24 hours of R and R.

[both] Whoo!

[whispering] Psst. Whatcha up to tonight?

Got a date already. Sorry.

Oh yeah, with who?

No one you'd know. He's tall, dark and handsome

and doesn't resort to bathroom humor.

Ah, sounds boring. Try me instead.

I got a comped room at Turtle Bay Hilton.

You're sharing that room with Sean, remember?

I'm on my own.

[JD] Not for long. Even the chaperone has to sleep, sometime.

[soft music continues]

[Blake] C'mon, put some spit into it.

That cage is our bread and butter.

Yes, sir.

Captain, what do you want me to do with the rest of this chum? [Blake] What do you think?

Dump it overboard.

Kinda close to shore, huh?

[Blake] I don't care if you dump it or you eat it.

Just get it off my boat.

[soft music]

[diver] Ready to go? Now.

[music continues]

[JD] Sean, check out the divers at 9 o'clock.

[man] Somebody! Help us!

Over h

ere! Help! Something's wrong. Let's go.

Oh, God. Please, help us!

It's blood.

[beep]

[JD] Beach Control, this is Baywatch Hawaii, we've got injured divers. A bleeder. Need paramedics, now!Stay calm.

My friend's hurt.

Shark!

[tension music]

It's comin' back! Help us!

[opening theme song]

[tension music]

[man] Oh God, I see them!

[Sean] Grab onto the end of the tube. I'll pull you over. Slowly, don't wanna bring the shark to you.

[Kekoa] Hold onto your friend.

JD!

-No! Kekoa! -He needs

help. My friend's in the water. Get him. Get my friend.

[Sean] Keep an eye out for the shark.

[tension music continues]

[JD] Don't panic.

[panting]

Get out of the water!

[JD] Take over.

[Kekoa] No pulse, no b

reathing. Beginning CPR. I got a major artery severed. I need compression, now.

He's bleeding out.

-[beep]

-Beach Control. We've got a shark attack. One victim down, massive blood loss, possible shock.

Heading back to Race Headquarters, ETA 5 minutes.

Have the paramedics waiting at the dock.

Get out of here now. Let's go!

[tension music continues]

[indistinct voices over radio]

-[JD] Are you ready? -[Kekoa] Yup.

[ambulance siren]

[JD] There you go.

I'll let you speak with Kekoa Tanaka. She's a lifeguard. Kekoa, they need a second witness for the accident report.

You take care of it, please?

-[ambulance siren] -Right.

What happened out there?

The guy was drowning. He wasn't gonna make it.

Think I was gonna leave him there?

I was gonna put on a mask, see where the shark was and go from there. I don't know what to say.

I had this feeling, I knew I could save him. I made a call. It wasn't your call to make, JD. Incident Command. That's

What you did was make a dangerous situation worse

by putting other lifeguards at risk. C'mon, man.

This is... this is basic stuff. You're not a trainee.

You know better than that.

Sorry. It won't happen again.

[Kekoa] I don't get it. I mean, shark attacks are pretty rare. Humans aren't their natural food source.

I know and they don't attack unless they're provoked.

I have a feeling this wasn't an accident.

I'm gonna talk to the diver, see what was goin' on.

Wait a second. It's not our turf. We should let the authorities handle it.

We're involved. We were first on the scene. We have to see it through.

Ah, look, he's lost a lot of blood,

but I think they're gonna be able to save the leg.

Can't thank you enough. Know what I mean.

If you hadn't showed up when you did, we would've been goners out there.Glad we got there in time. Can I ask you

if you're feelin' up to it.

Sure.

I noticed some chum on the surface when we arrived. You guys weren't using bait to attract sharks, were you?

Are you kidding?

No way, man. It was Pete's first ocean dive. We were just checking things out,

when that shark just came out of nowhere.

Well, did you see anyone fishing or anything unusual,

or any boats or anything unusual at all?

You know, there was a boat.

Yeah, and it was carrying this weird cage on the back of it. Did you catch the name of it?

Nah. Everything happened too fast.

[sighs

] Alright. Ah, listen, tell Pete that I'll be by later on and check on him, okay? Okay.

[tensi

on music]

[Jason] Out of the way.

-Ah! What happened? Did he drown? -Sir, give us some air.

Please, stand back. Let me do my job.

His lips are blue! Check for breathing sounds.

Dad, get out of the way!

Does he have a pulse? Maybe he had a heart attack. -No. -What about...

maybe a stroke or a brain aneurysm. Hey! Don't be afraid.

C'mon.

Kid, I'm gonna take over.

-Clear! -[grunting]

[Al] Alright.

What are you doing?

-[grunting] -It's called CPR. -I learned it in cub scouts. -Get back!

-Is this yours? -Yeah.

He's asthmatic. Just breathe easy. You're gonna be fine. How did you know that? Are you some kind of psychic genius?

He ran past me a few minutes ago. I heard him wheezing.

He's at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I had to find the right towel.

Yeah, well, listen, ah, I'm just glad I could help out anyway I could.

Right thought, wrong action.

CPR on someone who doesn't need it, could do more harm than good. You do chest compression's in the wrong

you could break his clavicle and puncture his heart.

Nice goin', Dad. You almost killed someone.

Listen, don't worry about it, brah, alright?

Thanks, man.

Alright.

[upbeat music]

Are you alright? Ah!

[soft music]

Hello?

Hello?

[Blake] Intimidating, isn't it?

I had it custom made with extra large openings.

When I lower you down among the sharks,

you get right in the thick of that feeding frenzy,

and feel those razor-sharp teeth gnawing right next to you.

Sounds dangerous.

If it wasn't, it wouldn't be worth it, would it? I'm Captain B

lake. How 'bout it? I got an opening t

omorrow. Take you right into a bonafide Tiger Shark nursing ground.

Up close and personal with "Jaws" and all his friends.

No, thanks, though.

What are you worried about? I got everything you need on board. Wet-suits, air tanks, spear guns.

I can even certify you on the way out if you want to make it official.

What about bait?

Now you're talking.

I got the best chum in all the islands.

I make it myself. It drives the sharks crazy.

Looks delicious.

You didn't happen to dump some of that overboard earlier, did you?

You are cop?

I'm one of the lifeguards who rescued the divers from the shark attack this morning.

[Blake] A lifeguard?

No kidding?

You wanna sign up and take a ride, it's two hundred bucks.

Otherwise, get the hell off my boat.

[soft

music]

-[woman] Aloha. -[man] There you go.

[Sean] Hello there, Monroe,

2 rooms, please.

[dialing]

Yes, hi, this is Captain Sean Monroe of Baywatch Hawaii.

I need you to put me through to the Harbor Master.

Yes, it is urgent. It's regarding a shark attack.

Fine. I'll hold. Thank you.

[soft music]

I wanted to do that all day long.

God, you're beautiful.

Can't you just tell Sean you want your own room?

Tell him you snore or something.

I tried it, he snores, too.

I'll tell him I sleep walk. We'll be quick.

Quick? JD, this is not the cab of your truck.

Those are king-size beds upstairs.

I wanna wear mine out.

I just don't think now's the time to go public.

Sean wants us to be happy, doesn't he?

[sighs] Not this happy.

Ah, I don't know if I can stand it.

Knowing you're right next d

oor to me.And not being

able to touch you.

[Al] Ladies, please no long-boards in the no swim zone.

Thank you very much.

[girl] Whatever. Who's that guy?

[grunts]

Keepin' my seat warm?

Just checkin' out your view of the world, my friend. Remember me? How could I forget?

Listen, don't go up there again, okay, partner? I was thinkin' about what you said about being prepared in an

The only way is through experience, so I'm hanging out with you for a few days.

-[Jason] Uh huh. -Yeah.

There are a lot of swimmers, so we have to put the flags up. Also, these vendors, they're in our way,

like that lei stand over there.

[Jason] That's Auntie Jackson.

The wife of Santa Monica Max Jackson.

Only the greatest lifeguard on earth.

Anyway, I think she should move back a few feet.

I'll take care of it, as soon as I open the tower.

No, let me help you. I wanna be involved.

Listen, brah, we have a life-saving program for swimmers,

once a month at the Training Center.

Why don't you check it out then. Next month.

[giggles] That sounds great for beginners, but now for me.

Hey, kid, get off those rocks!

What are you doing? Don't you have a kid of your own? I do. He's supposed to meet me down here.

I get to see him a couple of weeks a year 'cause of a messy divorce. He's a great kid. A kid can't grow up right

Wouldn't know. Never met my father.

Anytime you wanna rap about it, let me know.

That's okay. I've had time to get over it.

I gotta take Noah up to Hanauma Bay. We're gonna do a little snorkeling.

But I'll only be gone a couple of hours, so, ah...

maybe I'll just go look for him right now.

-Good idea. -Alright.

Ah, it was good hangin' with you, Jason.-Alright, buddy. -Alright, pal. See you soon.

[soft music] All I'm saying is you've got a real problem on your hands.

Now this Blake crackpot is an accident waiting to happen.

It's just a matter of time before people die.

That shark attack was an isolated incident.

I'm not about to close beaches and cause a panic.

Especially for a pushy lifeguard.

Guess what?

This pushy lifeguard is gonna keep pushing until you do your job. A guy's laying in a hospital bed with half his leg

I've got a lunatic on the water causing shark problems,

so what are you gonna do about it?

If we have a shark problem, I'll handle it out of this office.Surprise me. Handle it.

Or do you just wear the side-arm to impress the ladies? I got a task force looking into the incident, right now.

So why don't you go back to your little tower

and I'll be sure to call you if anyone needs a swimming lesson.

[Noah] Dad, can I go surfing?

Hey, I just got us lunch.

Alright.

Hey, partner.

Ah.

Pop a squat, we'll lunch together, buddy.-I gotta get back to the tower. -Aw, c'mon.Hey, how was, ah,

Actually, it's Hanauma and it was terrible.

It was wall to wall people. Some couldn't tread water,

couldn't see the bottom of the ocean, bumpin' into each other.

I could have really used you out there.

Anyway, ah, listen, I'm gonna, ah, go eat this,

then I'll see you back at the tower.

Take your time. Don't want indigestion getting in the way of your performance. -Don't worry about that, man. -[woman]

-Oh, oh, oh. -[man] Hey!

[Noah] Dad! You okay?

Yeah.

Why do you always have to be such a dork?

I can't believe I have to spend two whole weeks with you.

[sad music]

Hey, Auntie.

Do I have a sign on my face that says, "freaks w

elcome"? Guy's been following me around all day.

Imagine having him as a father.

Ah, he's harmless. He is tryin' to look good in front of the little one. Fat chance of that happening.

My husband hear you talking like that, you going get lickin's. No, Auntie. Max will side with me.

Don't you know a victim when you see one?

The man needs a break. Life is tough.

Things don't always work out the way you want them to.

Come on. You've seen Max do like what, a hundred saves?

Don't tell me a poser like that wouldn't bust his ass.

I tell you something and don't you be getting me in trouble with my Max,

but his dad's been in heaven a long time now.

And Max didn't talk to his dad for 10 years

because he thought his dad was no good.

But you listen to me,

there's nothing he regrets more in his life than that. So you let that guy tag along. You in this just for the recognition?

Maybe you shouldn't be wearing that red suit.

[sad music]

[JD] You're not gonna believe this.

Blake's commercial fishing permit expired six months ago. That's enough to shut him down.

There's only one problem. Technically, he is not fishing. He lists his operation as "ecotourism."

[Blake] Just doin' my part to save the environment.

Fishing's not what it used to be.

Fewer fish, shorter seasons, more boats.

Competition out there is intense.

Sometimes small operators like me

are forced to get creative to make a living.

Spare us the rational, Blake.

Now, do you mind? This i

s my boat. Really pretty, too

. Yellow. Perfect color for you.

[Kekoa and JD laugh]

What do you want?

I heard about all the noise you're making, trying to get me to shut down.

[Sean] You crossed the line.

You almost got two kids killed. It's time to close up shop. If I were you, lifeguard, I'd think real hard about my next

Or you might just end up swimming in a pool of chum,

surrounded by man-eaters.

[suspense music]

"Pool of chum."

Just put the Harbor Mast

er on the phone, please.

I realize we alr

eady spoke, look, just tell him, I'm not hanging up until you get him on the line.

Fine, I'll hold.

Thanks.

Jeez, I've never seen Sean so single minded.

Well, Brian Keaulana should be here any minute.

I don't get it. We couldn't get anywhere with the Harbor Patrol,

what's Brian gonna do?

I'll tell you what he's not gonna do. He's not gonna go and start killing sharks, like that's gonna solve anything.

It's not right, but it's a natural reaction.

People are scared and want the beaches safe.

There are families whose 'aumakua is the shark.

You're talking about killing their family guardian spirit.

Easy, K, you're really fired up.

I'm not kidding around, JD. This is big.

At least Sean realizes he needs help

if he's gonna get anything done.

Stop looking at me like that.

Like what?

Like that.

-Hope you got me one of those. -Hey, Brian.

Thanks for coming. Here, take this one.

Hey, pretty important, you know, giving me hamburgers so easily.

C'mon, let's go check out Buffalo.

Guys.

[JD] Hey, Brian, how'd your dad get the name Buffalo? [Brian] Oh, my family always been ocean people.

Growing up my father spent much of his time in the ocean.

My grandma, she used to say, "He's so much like a water Buffalo."

His friends heard it and it kinda stuck.

Brian's father is a Kahuna.

[JD] I hope that's Hawaiian for Chief of Police.[Sean] It means well-respected teacher of the water.

He carries a lot of weight. People listen to him.

He's exactly the guy we need to get Blake off the water.

[slow music]

[Buffalo] An 'aumakua is not a hunter. An'aumakua protects you.

An 'aumakua is not an evil spirit.

He's here for a reason.

Now, I understand you want me to respect the 'aumakua and your beliefs, but a man's leg has been mangled.

Do you know what Mana is?

As I understand it, it's a life

force. Mana is everywhere. Mana is here. In here.

Mana makes us strong.

I'll do my part and make sure, s

et the balance. I used to believe in that type of thing and then my son died.

So I ask you, where's the balance in that?

With no disrespect, but there's no greater force

that's controlling anyone or anything.

The fact is if we don't stop Blake, people are gonna die.

The reason why you can't believe is because your mind is closed.

You should try to see it the Hawaiian way.

I wish I could.

Thank you for your time. We've got to get back to work.

Sean, wait.

Take a minute. Consider what my father said.

Whoo! When you two guys getting married?

-[Kekoa] Us? -[JD] What are you talking about?

We're just friends.

[slow music]

Oh, here it comes.

Tell me you're not seeing each other, please. It's not gonna get in the way of the job.

The team is important to both of us.

Oh, JD, you are completely out of whack, man.

This morning you jump in the water with a shark.

Then she wants to jump in to save you. That's crazy.

You're not thinking straight. Your feelings could hurt us.

When you hired me, I was in a relationship.

Sure as hell didn't help the team.

This is different. Kekoa and I are professional.

A professional would've never let it get this far.

Cut it out! Both of you just calm down. This isn't the time or the place.

Come one, JD. Leave it.

Let's go.

[sighs]

Careful, brah. Words have power.

Once it's out there, you can't bring it back.

I hope my father didn't waste his time.

[sighs] I don't believe this.

[suspense music]

[snoring]

[coughing]

Help!

Help!

[tension music]

Help!

Ah!

I'm

gonna save you.

You gotta relax.

[panting]

I got you.

Ah!

[screams]

[tension m

usic]

[man] Help!

[man] Ah!

-Come here, take the board. -The other

guy.

[panting] Oh, God.

Thanks.

How you doing? Still feeling sick?

Yeah, it's the salt

water. First time I got stuck out in the hole,

I swallowed half the bay. Don't worry, buddy, it'll pass.

I thought I could save him and we almost died.

My son would've been left without a father.

-He would've been a lot better off. -Hey.

You're alright though.

You got a real rescue story to tell him this time, though. I'm just glad he wasn't here to see it.

[sad music]

Thinking about what Sean said about us?

Well, there's a reason why they don't let cops and fire fighters

who are in relationships work as partners.

I know. Emotion clouds your judgment.

Gotta be level-headed to save lives.

I've worked too hard to get

this far. I real

ly love being part of this team. I

know what you mean.

We should stop, shouldn't we?

[horn]

[suspense music]

[dialing]

[beep] Yeah, Sean?

JD, I need you down at the harbor right away. Blake messed up the Scarab.

He's out there with a posse, hunting Tigers, right now.Copy that, Sean. I'll find Kekoa and be right there.

Gimme a break. I know she's right there with you.

Good. Try it now.

[engine starts]

Kekoa, let's go.

He's probably got that cage in the water by now.

[upbeat music]

[Blake] Get ready, gentlemen. Dinner is now being served.

Here they come.

Keep your arms and legs inside the cage or you'll be eaten.

[music continues]

[Blake] They're comin'.

[men] Ah!

[Blake] Ah!

[panting]

[slow music]

[panting]

Blake, grab this tube.

And what? Let you hand me over to the cops? Hell no.

I was never here.

Don't be a fool. Nobody's turning you in.We're trying to save your life.

The hell you are. I don't need your help.

[coughing]

[Brian] We've got people in trouble in that cage. I don't know how much air is left. We gotta get them now.

Alright. We need to get the anchor down there and hook it onto the cage.

Get the anchor ready, guys.

We can't pull it up. It's too heavy.

We can run it through Blake's winch.

Might work.

If someone's got a better idea, tell me now. I'll do it.

-[Kekoa] No, I will. -Hell you will. It's too dangerous. -That's not your decision. -Guys!

Get it together. People down there need us.

Brian, you're in command.

-What? -You heard me, JD.

I need someone with a cool head and yours is preoccupied. Sean, I can handle it.

We'll discuss it when I get back. We're gonna get that cage up and then go back for Blake.[Blake] Oh, man.

You're not thinking

straight either, if you're going down there. If someone's gonna risk their life, it's gonna be me.

And that's not up for debates.

[slow music]

[panting and moaning]

Stop splashing. Yo

u're gonna attract the sharks. To hell with the sharks. I'm not afraid of them.

[JD] Grab the tube, Blake. This is no time for pride.

[music continues]

[screaming]

-[JD] Blake. -[

Kekoa] Blake!

[tension music]

[music continues]

[tension music continues]

-[Kekoa] Where's Sean? -There's the signal.

[tension music continues]

[engine running]

Whoa. Good work. Where's Blake?

[slow music]

Hey, it's Noah, right?

Hello.

My dad told me what you did today. Oh, yeah? I was just thinking about him. How's he doing? [grumbles] Okay, I guess,

Thanks for saving his life.

You got

the wrong guy. Wasn't me. What are you talking about?

My dad told me how you pulled him out of the water.Yeah, I pulled him out.

If your dad hadn't seen the guy on the raftand went out there to save him, the guy would've drowned.

Your dad's the hero, not me.

But why

would he lie to me? Sometimes saving a man's life can be a very humbling experience.

There's not many people out there who would do what your father did today.

He's the real thing

. You should be proud of him.

Noah. There you are.

I talked with your mom and she's cool with you coming home early.

Dad? Is it too

late for me to change my mind?

What do you mean? Well, I thought it over and I'd like to stay another week if that's okay.

[Al] Yeah, it's okay.

That would be great!

Bad ne

ws for you. I'm gonna spend time with the kid, we're not gonna work together. [clicking his tongue] I'm gonna miss you,

I know. Thank you.

Thank you. Right on.

[laughs]

C'mon, man, let's go.

[voices over radio]

...anyway. You should talk to him, thanks.

Look, Sean,

I know what you're gonna to say about what went on out there. You were right. I didn't want Kekoa to be in danger,

but we got it together and we pulled off the rescue.

We pulled off nothing. We lost a man out there, JD.

You did everything you could. You risked your life to save those people.

Blake chose his fate. He rejected our help.

You made the right call and it went down by the book.

By the book?

[laughs] I don't think either of you have ever even read that book. Now, I cannot have people on my team making decisions

I'm sorry, I don't have any other choice.

The two of you are gonna have to decide what's more important to you, this team...

or each other.

Righ

t. You guys need a lifeguard at Hawaiian?JD, wait. We'll talk about this later.

We don't have to decide right now. Just let him cal

m down. [JD] There's nothing to talk about.

It's the only decision.

[slow music]

I don't want to stand in the way of JD and Kekoa's happiness,

I've seen this before and it's not gonna work.

How long have you been friends with them?

I have to do what's best for the team.

What's best for the team is balance.

Brian, this is not about spiritual ideals. It's about safety.

Haven't you learned anything?

You can't control everything, Sean.

Let me ask you this, do you trust JD and Kekoa?

'Cause if you don't, you will lose them.

You're a professional and a true friend. I know you make the right decisions.

[sounds "Ke Ala Ka Mano"]

d Our fathers knew life's harmonyd

d Our mothers gave us legacy d

d The stars they led the path...d

Hey... Kekoa, wait.

[sighs] Ah...

You two are like family to me and I don't want to lose you.

You're professional

s. You'll... you'll handle it.

Whatever it takes, we'll work it out.

Alright.

Let's go home.

No way, man. We're celebrating.

-Let's go get a bite to eat. -[Sean] Alright.

[JD] You're buying.

[Sean] Alright. I'll buy yours but not hers. I've seen her eat.

-[Kekoa] Babooze. -[JD and Sean laugh] -[Sean] Can I hit you up for a 20? -[Kekoa laughs]

[ending theme song]
