But I saw your interview on our show that
you didn't want to do the trot genre.

After debuting as a girl-group member
but failing after just 2~3 months,

I was going through a mental breakdown.

I'd go to auditions and
meetings.

But the CEO of my current management
company suggested for me to sing trots.

But I was a K-Pop singer,
even just for those couple months.

I was too young to sing
trot songs, also.

I was shaken up by that proposal.

The CEO said the song is amazing.

So I thought, "How good of a song can
a trot song possibly be?"

Then he sent me the lyrics first.

I opened his email and the title was,
"Battery of Love."

That made me cry.

What kind of a song is, "Battery of love"?

I literally cried thinking, "How can I
sing a song like this?"

But the hardest thing for me was...

I went to a music TV show with
the song, "Battery of Love,"

but everyone else on the show was
an idol-group member, a K-Pop star.

A new singer in the genre of trot
was just me.

Everyone else was in idol-groups, I was
a solo singer, a trot singer, at that.

It made me feel stuck in between,
and so alone.

A different genre, on top of that.

So what did you do when you were
all the makeup room?

In the makeup room?

Are you OK?

I just remembered how it was back then.

(The members are taken aback
by her sudden tears)

I've never seen her cry before.

(Feeling uneasy)

It was incredibly hard for me
when I had just debuted.

It must've been!

Thanks.

It must've been so hard.

But I always see you so bright and happy
on TV.

We had no idea you had such pain inside.

I don't know why I'm being like this
right now either.

I never had much chance to about
what happened in the past.

When I think about when I was
a new singer,

I realize that it was a really
hard time for me then.

I felt like there was no one
on my side.

It was hard for me to go to
the music TV shows.

But I also felt alone when I go to events
where there is only the older crowd.

I wasn't a part of any crowd.

So did you do in the makeup
room by yourself?

I'd just stay in the car.

I couldn't be in the waiting room.

I just couldn't mix in.

You couldn't try talking to
idol-group members?

I think I just lacked confidence then.

There were talks like this
during that time,

the news story titles would go,

"A former girl-group member
debuts as a trot singer."

Many people would say, "She failed as
an idol-group singer, so she's doing trot!)

I read a comment like that.

But why...

Is trot not music?

I thought about that.

That's how things were then.

(Jin-young had a hard time
by herself)

No one knew who I was.

And I couldn't have myself edited out
when I'd go on TV.

So I had to make myself stand out

I had to say things that were stronger
and more sensational than the times before.

That's how I survived.

When she first started to be on TV,

I thought she was just too strong.

There were many people who didn't like her
because of it.

She'd just stand out so much from the pack.

I had such a hard time
because of it.

I'd always cry at home after shooting.

- Like everyday.
- We had no idea!

You'd come off so bright and bubbly!

I wondered what kind of vitamins
you were taking.

I'd never imagined that you'd be home
crying by yourself.

But you still had to do it? Though you
hated it that much?

You could've quit and did something else.

It was my dream to be a singer
ever since I was little.

I just loved singing on stage
in front of people.

So I never wanted to give up
being a singer.

- Even if the genre was different?
- Yes.

When I saw you on stage, I realized
that you're not treating it like work.

But you were just doing what you were
destined to do!

You might get sick if you didn't
do this for a living.

(A born singer who sings
through all of herself)

So how did you actually debut?

I'd go on any school talent shows, call in
radio shows for monthly open mics...

I'd call in for events like that.

Being photogenic actually helped, too.

How did that?

There's this thing where you take
a selfie at PC cafes.

And everyone would post their pictures.

What was your nickname then?

"The flower of Bongseong-dong."

(She's also from that town)

Is that a town in Gwangju?

Oh, so the flower of your hometown.

You'd get many visitors on your page?

During those days, per day I'd get...

2 to 3,000 visitors on my page.

Then what happened?

A lot of talent agencies would
send me messages there.

They asked me if I wanted to audition.

Living in Gwangju, I'm sure Minzy
felt the same,

Seoul felt like it's so far away.

It's true!

And I'd always wonder if I can ever
make it in Seoul.

So even when the messages would come,
they just felt like dreams.

I didn't have the courage to actually
write back.

But one of them said that he'd come to
Gwangju himself.

- To see you?
- Yes.

He came and convinced my parents.

He told my parents that he'd
really take good care of me.

That's how I moved to Seoul.

To be a singer? Or to be an actress?

It was to be a singer but I ended up
acting in theater for a year.

It was a theater company that had just
launched management side for the singers.

But they were new, so they didn't have
a detailed system set up.

So I did theater for a year.

Where? Daehangno?

Yes, starting from putting up posters.

Put up posters early in the morning,
then again when they're taken down?

We'd put up poster then run away.

What kind of plays did you do?

"Go alone like a rhino's horn,"

"The beautiful dead."

You did all the famous ones!

I also did a children's musical,
"Robin Hook and Friends."

That's what I did.

- You must've been good!
- I did all sorts of things.

- But your dream was to be a singer.
- Were you paid at least?

- What was your salary?
- I wasn't paid.

- At all? 0?
- Nothing for those plays?

It was like that as a theater company.

- But no salary?
- Nothing for the youngest one like me.

Your parents must've been
so worried.

I was afraid that they'd worry so
I couldn't tell them it was hard.

I didn't want them to worry.

Same for me, I had came from Busan.

There were times I'd earn just
300,000 Won (about 300 dollars) a year.

I did theater too, so I know
what it's like.

I couldn't tell my family either.

I talk to my parents often on the phone,
even today.

They'd ask me if I ate well.

Ah, that's when you feel so
bad about yourself.

You know what I mean, right?

So I couldn't tell my mom how much of
a hard time I was having.

I didn't want to have my mom
lose sleep over me.

But I'm sure all those things provided sort
of nutrition for you for the future.

That's true.

Your facial expressions and mannerisms on
stage I'm sure all came from that time.

Then after putting up poster and stuff,
what happened?

It was a clear violation of contract
because he had me do theater when he

had said that he'd have me
become a singer.

So I told them I wanted to be a singer and
that I quit working for him.

Then I prepared to be a singer
as a part of "Club Jin."

It was a four-member girl-group.

But it wasn't so easy either.

- How long were you in training for that?
- A year, also.

Any income?

None.

(Sigh...)

All these new companies were investing
in making girl-groups,

but they can't all debut.

Many groups just won't work out.

So I went to a different company
and prepared "Pink Spicy."

- How long for that?
- Another year.

- Income?
- None.

More than money though...

It was hard because there were managers
who'd be so mean, and others, too.

How were they mean?

Like I mentioned last time, they'd
have us do push-up's, they wouldn't

let us sleep...

They had us be in push-up positions
with our fists.

But our fists aren't so flat, and we'd
fall left and right with our fists all red.

Then a female manager would kick us.

(Shocking)

They won't have us sleep but tell us
to practice singing or memorize the lyrics.

Or write essays, even.

I don't even remember what kind of books
they had us read.

So I wanted to rebel.

And I didn't write an essay after
reading a book, as they told me to.

I went to the manager with blank
sheets of paper with nothing written.

They said, "Where's the essay?"

I told them, "I didn't write it."

Then they said, "Is that how your
parents raised you?"

"Just quit and go back home!"

"What are you doing here?"

There are many good people in this
line of work.

But there are some bad people
hiding in dark places too.

My fellow members had a hard time, too.

I realized that it wouldn't work out.

So when I left that company,
I flipped over tables before leaving.

I ripped up the contract, and yelled,
"Get the boss out here!"

There was enough reason to do that.

(So bad that we couldn't air it)

(She had gone through so much)

So I caused a ruckus at the management
company.

- You did?
- Yes, that's how that group broke up.

Then I became really determined.

I told myself that I'll make it in this
world no matter what.

Jin-young went through so much!
Even things that she shouldn't have.

What a terrible experience!

But Jin-young, of course it would've been
better if you hadn't gone through that,

but I think they helped you to be stronger,
it became your nutrition for the future.

You keep saying that.

(Repeats the same thing after 3 minutes)

I only know a few nice things to say.

After coming to Seoul
when I was 20,

I had gone through many failures
and averted plans.

But all those experiences became
a huge motivation for me.

Though I'm so busy and I'd get tired,

because of my past experiences,

I was able to focus on
becoming a singer.

So these days, I'm so thankful and it makes
me want to work harder.

I want to give it my very best.

Even doing 6 or 7 appearances a day

my health doesn't give out.

Because it's something you love to do!

Just being on stage itself makes me happy,
because I went through so much.

I get so excited.

Especially when the audience response
is good, I'd sing a few more songs.

hardships in the past.

I never heard this from you but
I already knew.

You knew that she had nutrition?

I knew she went through a lot because
she's so much more mature than her age.

Her actions are so adult-like.

That's what made me realize that
she went through some hard times.

Were you always like that?

I used to love talking in front of people.

I was very extroverted originally.

A lot like Somi.

Then what happened?

I met many people going through
the training period.

And at a certain point, I couldn't
talk as much.

A lot of times, my intentions became
misunderstood and people started to

spread rumors.

Many people would talk about me.

People around you?

Yes, and that got me to speak
less and less with confidence.

Did you have someone you could
talk to?

I didn't have anyone to talk to.

But your mom or family could tell,
I'm sure.

Yes I'm sure, but I was living
separately from my family.

They couldn't come and see me
while I was a trainee.

For how long?

About 2 or 3 years.

I was apart from my family
during those years.

I was under so much control, too.

- How old were you then?
- I was 16.

You were still a kid!

Such a kid!

I couldn't even pee properly by myself
when I was 16.

You all did back then?

You never had an incident?

Maybe you should get it checked out.

My parents raised us in a very difficult
situation, too.

It was hard for them.

And because I saw how hard they
worked for us,

I didn't want to worry them at all.

my mother and my sister and I

were in Seoul.

My mom always had to leave us
to go to work.

I was at an age that I wanted
a lot of stuff, too.

I felt bad for my mom more than anything.

That gave me a motivation to work
harder and be successful.

But you turned out so well, you have
many years to be a great daughter.

I'm sure there are many stories to tell.

to be an idol-group K-Pop star.

But there's so much hardship that they
all go through.

It's really rare that people become stars

I didn't know anything and my Korean
wasn't so good then either.

I wasn't prepared at all but they
just sent me out.

I was blamed so much
for my bad acting then.

It was such a popular drama series.

What did people say?

Many things about my acting, how I was
ruining the drama...

"I couldn't even watch it."

No one remembers that.

I'm sorry I didn't say anything.

I was lonely in America.

It was sad because I'd watch my own acting
and I'd agree with what people were saying.

Did you take lessons in acting?

Never, none at all!

I never learned anything.

And they just put you in front of camera
to act?

They had already begun to shoot
the drama in Gangwon-do.

I went there and had one meeting
with the director, and I was cast..

That's not so good either.

Of course, my manager did a great job
and getting me to act in it.

But I did blame him a bit, because I wished
I was more prepared.

I wished I had taken lessons, knew more
about acting before debuting.

Did you take lessons after?

Yes, I had an acting coach then.

Then how long did it take you to
be a main character after that drama?

In a way, I was one of the main characters
of "Autumn in My Heart."

There are four main characters, and I was
one of them.

But my role got smaller and smaller
as time went on.

We're discussing many different
types of hardships today.

For someone, she had a hard time because
there was no work.

But for another, she was getting work
too fast without being ready.

It must've been hard as you saw your
role get smaller and smaller.

In comparison to others, right?

Yes, it was.

I felt very embarrassed.

And I felt bad for everyone
involved.

I should've made the role better.

It was an important role in the
beginning.

I'm sure you blamed yourself a lot.

Were you sad that you didn't do a good job
and you could've been more popular?

Because the rest of the main characters
became huge stars thereafter.

That probably made you feel
even more lonely.

I'm sure it was frustrating.

I was 20 years old then.

I really didn't know anything.

I just regretted more than
being jealous.

And even though my follow-up dramas
weren't as popular as that one...

(She focused more in her acting)

(And became a humble actress)

I had a better time.

Then I was in "Sassy Girl Chun-hyang."

That's when everyone thought I was
quiet and shy.

They thought I was snobby.

But the role I played in "Sassy Girl
Chun-hyang" was similar to my

own personality.
