how did you become an actress?

I mean, particularly, how did you land

the lead role of Theodora in "Wake"?

after seeing your audition,

that would lead you to win Academy Award.

I mean, you beat almost a thousand actresses with,

what was it, a three minute monologue?

How did you do it?

"Wake" was a lifetime ago.

My memory isn't as good as it used to be,

but everything about "Wake" I remember clear as day.

In my day, we had a technique developed

by Constantine Stanislavsky.

It was a method whereby the character

could be more accessible to the actor:

Get into the character's mind.

And that way the audience watching, the director watching,

while even the camera's rolling,

will believe that you are the character.

What do you feel when you think about Theodora?

Sadness, I guess.

I mean, for an example,

she kills herself to escape her depression,

to escape the pain of her life.

I guess that's one interpretation.

Some people find it inspiring.

How would you access that sadness?

Well, I would think about being sad

and all the traits of being sad,

like frowning and crying.

Well, that's your second mistake.

No amount of physical traits would add the least bit

if you don't properly feel the emotion.

You don't act sad.

You are sad.

In the moment, you allow the sadness to fill your heart

until you can no longer feel it beat.

Okay, I have to be sad.

Got it.

In order for you to really feel it, see as she sees,

think the way she thinks, or breathe the way she breathes,

you have to find the darkest moment in you.

My darkest moment?

When you felt the most despair,

the most fear, the most desperate for everything

to be a faint dream.

How old are you, dear?

25, 26?

I'm 28.

Well, in those 28 years,

I'm sure you had your share of moments.

Surely there was at least one that was dark.

I don't think talking about my darkest moments

is actually necessary.

Oh, well, I am the only person

that Theodora currently inhabits,

and I truly believe the only way

that you will embody Theodora is if you take yourself

to that darkest place that I know is within you.

Well, what if I don't have one?

Oh my dear, everyone has a darkest moment.

You asked me how I got into acting.

What I would like to know is how did you,

I wanna feel something else.

Something that I've been feeling my whole entire life,

something different.

And in order to do that, I have to pretend

to be somebody else.

When you act, you don't pretend to be someone else.

You are someone else.

And that's when I began to sink.

Terror struck me like lightning.

This was it, I thought.

My death had come upon me.

It wasn't until the fifth time my head went under

that I realized I could still breathe.

The water filled my mouth and filled my lungs,

but I was still breathing.

So I sank farther and farther down to the depths

of the ocean, so far and so deep till the sun

could no longer reach me.

I became this, this insignificant pain,

this speck of life just,

just floating ocean.

I wasn't dead, I knew that, but I wasn't living either.

I was just there squandering in the ocean.

And how did I think about it,

and it wasn't a dream after all.

I could hear my heart pounding in my chest

Finally the doctor broke the news to me.

I was paralyzed from the waist down,

that I would never walk again.

I tried to convince myself it was a cruel joke,

that it wasn't real.

I was dreaming.

I kept telling myself, wake up,

Wake, wake.

This isn't real.

Wake.

But I didn't.

I was still in the bed and I couldn't move.

My legs were like hugs.

(stuttering and sobbing lightly)

Tabitha!

She was talking about her accident, and then I...
