The way that man fought

went on to become
the very foundation of Niko Style.

Mukaku Gaoh,

the last successor
of the Gaoh Style of koryu jujitsu.

-[blows landing]
-He journeyed far,

showing off his devastating technique
to take down any person

that dared stand in his way.

However, the walls
around The Inside were thick.

Ten years, 20 years, 30 years…

He kept trying for a quarter of a century.

But in the end,
he couldn't achieve his goal.

After many long years,

Gaoh finally decided to pass on his dream
to the next generation.

That's when he set his sights
on the kids who lived in The Inside.

There were many orphans,

some of whom had been abandoned there.

He picked out kids
who had a talent for fighting

and made them his disciples.

Once that began,

he was able to start passing on
his techniques to those children.

He rounded up a bunch of kids
to train them how to fight.

And one was Niko.

-They all were.
-[gasps]

[Kuroki] Every one of Gaoh's disciples
would adopt the moniker of Niko Tokita

when they came in.

There were two main reasons for this.

The people who lived in The Inside

were extremely hostile
toward anyone from the outside.

So the disciples used the name Niko Tokita

to give the impression
that they were from The Inside.

The other was to create a legend.

The various Niko Tokitas traveled
to different areas within The Inside,

each leaving their mark behind them.

Those stories would eventually combine

to become a legend
about a single Niko Tokita.

From the vast amount of their deeds,

Tokita became
a fictional charismatic entity

to help unify The Inside.

Now I see.

So that's why Ryo Himuro knows Niko.

That makes a lot of sense.

The plan he conceived was successful.

One rumor spiraled out into another.

The legend of Niko Tokita
began to grow bigger day by day.

Meanwhile, so too did the list of people

who wanted Niko's head.

The organizations
who held the power within The Inside

began to see Niko as a threat

and wanted to eliminate him.

As the conflicts intensified,

Gaoh decided to pass on his secret arts
to his disciples in order to win.

The location he used
to pass on his secret techniques

was Gakigahara Forest,

once known
as a highly disciplined holy land.

However,
trouble was stirring in the forest.

Almost all of the Nikos within it
had been brutally murdered.

The ones who did survive had run far away.

And on that day,
Mukaku Gaoh vanished into thin air,

never to be seen again.

[echoing] I came here with a friend
who also wanted to learn more.

They died here.

That must have been what he meant.

And with that, I have shared
everything I know with you.

I have to admit, this is hard to swallow.

Why did Niko decide
to tell you that at all?

More to the point, what's your connection
to Niko in the first place?

The Niko Style you know

is not just a reapproach
to Gaoh Style under a different name.

It is a form that cut out
all unnecessary elements from the past

and added in new techniques
to try and streamline it for modern times.

And the person who helped
to compile that list of techniques

is my master.

And Gaoh was an old friend of my master.

many years ago.

were the things that were relayed to me
by my master.
