Have you ever done any...

construction, any demolition, anything at all before?

Um, I've done some demolition,

but I think it wasn't intentionally.

After like five years there,

I was like, this is not what I was... cut out for.

Like, I'm supposed to be doing something else.

So your first official gig in Hollywood was

writing for Chris Rock.

-Absolutely. Yep. Yep. -That's amazing.

Tell us about...

-[Drew] Yeah. -[Jonathan] ...why you're doing this.

[Drew] Amber sounds like the most amazing person.

You know, I just love Amber so much.

She calls me, you know, "auntie".

She's my niece.

It's like their whole family,

it's like my family. They really are.

And Amber, you know,

she was like, in junior high school,

I think, when I first met her.

It was just cool having this...

teenager, you know,

who looked up to me.

And they've just given so much to me.

And I just...

want to...

give them something back.

Well, I think it's beautiful how you've supported them.

They've supported you. You truly are family.

Yeah, absolutely.

[Drew] So what are some of the problems

with the house here that you want to fix?

[Wanda] The main problem is just the layout.

I think there's an issue with the roof, too.

and we'll answer the door pretending

that we're here to fix the roof.

We heard you've got some issues with your roof.

I was [chuckling] expecting someone.

Amber means so much to me, you know.

Not just Amber, her whole family, um...

took care of me,

especially times when I needed a family.

Wanda feels like family that I was gifted from God.

So when she had her special, I'ma be me,

it meant a lot to me.

I was going through the same thing.

A little later, she marries her wife.

My grandmother comes.

I knew my mom was cool with everything,

but my grandma was a little...

religious and just,

you know, I don't know how it fit into her life.

I wasn't sure.

But when she showed up to Wanda's wedding

and was emotionally involved,

she cried, you know, like,

and that touched me.

I was like, okay, so I get to be me.

Like, I can marry my wife and have my kids, you know?

Wouldn't happen without this example.

Amber, you know, she's my chosen niece.

She's...

very creative.

She has a big heart.

[Amber] I don't remember exactly when,

but I met Wanda as a child through my mom,

who has a lot of great friends.

But her and Wanda are like sisters.

[Wanda] I met her mother, Alyson,

back in 1998, '97 maybe.

We were both writing

on Keenen Ivory Wayans' late night show.

We just hit it off.

And then I met her parents.

I met her daughter, Amber,

and it's really cool how our relationship has grown

because now she's a mom,

you know, married,

two girls,

and I'm just so proud of her.

So I live in my grandmother's house,

and we've been living here

since my grandmother passed away

with my wife, Brianna, and my two daughters.

I have a nine-year-old, Amai,

and I have a one-year-old, Ayana,

who's very fresh to our family.

[Wanda] Alyson bought this house

for her mother, for Mable.

So to be able to fix Mable's house

and to make it a home that's more...

conducive for Amber and her family,

it's going to change their life.

-So we were talking... -[Wanda] Mm-hmm.

...and Wanda was like,

"I know somebody who's having some issues

with their house.

Maybe we go over and take a little peek

and see if there's something we can help with."

What's going on with your house right now?

We have an addition, I guess,

they "added on" to the back of our house

that's just falling apart.

-Oh, really? -Pretty much. Feels like it.

The rain's coming through.

And I heard you have two kids?

Yes, two kids.

So is there some function and flow issues?

Yes.

My daughters are in the front of the house.

We're in the back.

And if my one-year-old wakes up,

we have to get out of bed,

go around the house to get to her.

So you trust her?

and extremely blessed, if I'm being honest.

You know, I do like the height down here is more,

but usually we would want to level things out

so it's not a trip hazard.

Because the closet is not even functional

because it comes into like a point, right?

And we have all kind of damage there.

From the water, you know,

the leak is coming through here.

And Amber also said, see that vent over there?

it's actually a drip that's like right--

-Onto the bed? Oh, my gosh. -Yeah. Like...

[Jonathan] So all of this, we'd have to pretty much strip back

anything that has gotten wet,

make sure that we don't have mold inside the walls.

Before we leave today, I want to look up on the roof

and see how bad it is

and where it's leaking from.

Where does that door go to?

[Wanda] That door goes to the yard.

Would they want to get rid of that door,

or would they want to keep that door?

- [Wanda] They want to keep that door. - [Jonathan] Okay.

If we got rid of that, in reality,

we could probably level this whole area up.

But if that door is

at the appropriate height for access outside,

then we'll want to keep this lower.

I think one step, coming into the bedroom,

isn't a bad thing,

but this sort of weird triple step thing is

-not working. - [Wanda] It doesn't work, right?

When you come back here, what do you feel?

It's dark,

and it's sad,

and I would like to brighten it up.

I mean, the real big thing is to figure out

if this is not the access you want,

through the kitchen,

through the laundry room,

you would want to connect directly

to the other bedroom.

So I assume the other bedrooms are

I mean, you know, I'm no Property Brother,

but I think, through this shower,

I think the hallway is on the other side of that.

That's a highly technical way

they're so far away from the girls' bedrooms.

And I know, as a mom, how that causes

so much of a problem.

You need to be able to hear your kids.

So I know I wouldn't be able to get a good night's sleep.

that absolutely ravishes the bathroom.

To add a walkway to the bedrooms,

you need to do the bathroom.

To move the bathroom, you need to redo the laundry.

To redo the laundry, we're going to have--

Just redo the whole house.

So the bathroom would now have to go

where you're standing or where you're standing.

If this becomes a hallway,

we wouldn't even necessarily need this.

We could open this up

so there's more light coming in.

So we could still keep laundry on the backside over here.

We could steal a little bit of this space, right?

If you really want to bring in

sort of that modern hotel aesthetic,

there's a way to do it

it's causing the water to pool.

Also, look at all the asphalt shingles...

That's the fiber of the inside of the actual shingle.

Well, I mean, this whole thing would have to be redone.

If we're going to redo the roof,

six weeks would probably be my guess

because we need to figure out the best possible layout

that accommodates a new entry and bathroom.

It's difficult for Amber and her young family

to be out of their home.

So we have agreed to five weeks.

But that means we have to work twice as hard

to actually get it done.

What does this do?

where it's bad enough that we need to have masks on.

We'll clean, scrub, spray the studs so it's safe,

and then reinstall.

So just going right through that bathroom

and through the closet, and then was like,

"Here's your hallway."

We have hallway vibes.

Everything else is going to be just

icing on the cake now.

[Jonathan] We lost a day

remediating the mold-affected areas,

so now we can let our crew do the rest.

[Drew] Yeah, the clock is ticking fast.

We're drastically reworking this home's floor plan

in only five weeks,

so we have no choice but to call in some extra help

inside and up on the roof.

[Jonathan] Yeah, and that's a big job out there.

After years of leaks,

that roof is in really rough shape,

including rotten decking

that needs to be completely rebuilt.

[Jonathan] I got to see

-Action Wanda. -Yes.

-Busting out walls, doing all-- -Ooh.

I mean, that was pretty good.

-But even more important... -Yeah.

'Cause I've measured everything out.

I've looked at how everything would line up.

We're actually going to do a wet room.

So there's a freestanding tub within the whole wet room.

we can do something that looks like slab on the floor,

this beautiful slab finish on the walls.

That's why we're going with larger tiles

on the floor,

and then just one large slab,

you know, on the walls, which is going to be gorgeous.

I loved how it just looks so open--

They don't need to put clothes anywhere.

A transformative renovation for Amber

and Brianna will start with a new opening

to the existing hallway

that will not only provide quicker access

to the kids' bedrooms,

but also improve the overall flow of the home.

Then we'll construct

the luxurious hotel-inspired bathroom

Wanda says Amber has always wanted.

Light-toned marble floors

and watertight porcelain slab walls will offer

a chic wet room surrounding a black soaker tub

to create a beautiful high-contrast look.

Next, a custom vanity will provide

increased storage for Amber and Brianna,

while an opulent apron-front porcelain countertop

will offer the couple's sought-after double sinks.

Finally, instead of leveling out the floors,

we'll take advantage of the step-down

to provide the bedroom with herringbone hardwood.

Then replace the closet

with efficient custom cabinetry

and a sumptuous bed

for a great night's sleep or cuddle time with the kids.

[Jonathan] The design is going to be stunning,

but to get there, it's going to take everything we've got.

Our team has already moved on

to framing the new spaces,

including sistering some of the damaged joists,

since we're also preserving

the height of the ceiling in the bedroom.

But with the wall gone, we have to address the drop.

And so we'll do that by adding a bench

to define the new hallway to the kids' room.

And we'll also build a proper step down so it's safe.

[rock music playing]

[Drew] It's week two, and our roofing team has

already started installing the waterproof membrane

that will prevent future water leaks,

mold, and rot.

[Jonathan] Yeah, and inside,

the water damage included some wire corrosion,

so the entire space is being rewired.

And we're adding some extras, like new recessed lighting.

The first step towards

a hotel-worthy bathroom

is new plumbing,

not just as a foundation for the sleek wet room,

but also to keep the peace

with the dual vanity.

[Jonathan] And with so much going on inside...

-Ready? -[Jonathan] All right, go for it.

[Jonathan] Yeah.

[Drew] Torching down the asphalt polymer sheets,

that's essential for flat roofs.

You probably never in a million years would have imagined

you'd be up on a roof with a torch

redoing a roof.

Not-- Never. Never.

[Drew] They're essentially an impenetrable waterproof membrane

that will stand up to all the weather extremes,

including California heat.

-[Wanda] This was the biggest job, right? -Yep.

[blowing]

Every time I look at this roof, I can go,

-"I did that." -Yeah.

How do you feel?

Uh, hot.

-It is pretty hot up here. -You know, I knew roofing was,

you know, a hard job.

But it's the heat.

It's hot up on that roof.

And you're using a torch.

And I decided to wear black.

Uh... So it was perfect.

Nice. All around good decisions.

[Drew] Do you want to drop the torch for me?

You want to give me a hand and just nail

-a couple of these in? Yeah. -Yeah, that'd be great.

[Wanda] Fixing the roof was major.

[Wanda] Usually when it rains,

especially in California, it's relaxing.

It's calming.

But not when you have leaks.

Nailed it.

As soon as you hear rain, you're like,

"Oh, my God, this is going to be an awful night."

There's going to be water dripping.

You're getting out your buckets.

So now they can just enjoy the rain.

[Drew] Now that week three is here,

and we're confident the rain can't get inside,

we've installed our insulation and drywall,

making this bedroom more energy efficient and brighter.

[Jonathan] The one place we do expect

to see a lot more water is the wet room.

[Drew] And installing a metal mesh is

just the first step in a watertight base

for the porcelain slab.

[Jonathan] Yeah. And while the new hardwood is being

laced into the existing hallway floors

for a seamless transition,

we're working away on the new stunning

yet labor-intensive herringbone in the bedroom.

I mean, it's not a huge space,

but to have a floor like this

just brings a lot of wow factor

to a small space.

And it actually turned out pretty nice, too.

Feathering in the boards up top,

it matches the hallway.

This bench is pretty cool.

I think this is something that they're going to love

because it just adds function.

so the waterproofing crew is here before us this morning to seal up the wet room.

that the spa-worthy space is strong enough

to receive the porcelain slabs,

which are delayed,

but we've been promised that they will arrive in time.

[Drew] And while that mixture cures,

Wanda's idea to get rid

of Amber and Brianna's closet for cabinets was

a genius add-on.

But cramming it into our schedule means

we need her here, to help get it right.

which is great, but it's also putting the squeeze on our schedule.

So we're just going to get a little close,

and then we're going to get in behind.

So this is-- it's like a porcelain tile.

The way this house was designed before,

with family and little kids

Right from the get-go,

the biggest thing Wanda said is

we have to fix the issues with the roof and the leak,

and we had to give you access to seeing the kids,

And you'll notice we actually found the same flooring,

and we sanded it,

matched it up as best as we could

to your existing floors,

but we wanted to do something different down here

-with the herringbone. -I love it.

When we changed and added this hallway over here,

and then we have the bathroom,

we were trying to figure out a way

to work with the two levels.

We wanted it to feel purposeful.

[Amber] Yeah.

-It feels like this could have been like this all the time. -Game changer.

I think we accomplished

everything that was on the plan.

It's safe.

It's totally functional.

The kids are right there.

And talk about stylish.
