"He's okay, but he's not stable." And he said,

"What you gonna call him, then?" And my dad said,

"I'm gonna call him after the greatest heavyweight

who ever lived. I'm gonna call him Tyson.

And the doctor laughed and said,

"No, that wouldn't be a good name for him.

Because he's only gonna be small." How wrong he was.

[Tyson laughs]

- [Narrator] Towering over his opponents at

six foot, nine inches tall, Tyson is anything but small.

One of the biggest heavyweights on the planet

with a career heaviest of 238 pounds,

Tyson is a Goliath.

With 32 fights over a 14 year period,

his longevity is undoubted.

Finishing 22 of his fights with knockouts.

Few boxers have a finishing rate as high as Fury.

However, despite all of his natural talent,

Tyson wasn't an overnight success.

Born in Manchester, Tyson began his boxing journey

at the age of eight,

training at the Jimmy Egan's Boxing Academy.

Where he began rising up the amateur ranks.

- Took him to world level on the amateur sides.

And the first day, he come to the gym.

Within a couple of minutes, [indistinct]

Heavyweight champ of the world.

- [Narrator] Coming from an Irish traveler background,

fighting is in Fury's blood.

- As the Gypsy King, there's nowhere...

I don't have a hometown.

So wherever I wanna go in the world is my hometown.

'Cause I'm a traveler. I travel around the world

and I make my hometowns, don't I?

Just pulling my old trailer upside of someone's garden,

make a mess, and [indistinct].

When he climbs into that ring, his life's on the line.

that's what we're fighting for.

- [Narrator] Beginning his professional career in 2008,

Tyson got off to a strong start, winning his first 14 fights

with only four of them going the distance.

However, Tyson was still to learn that there is more

to boxing than just brute force and raw power.

Often compared to a game of chess,

strategy plays a big role in boxing.

A sport where every millisecond counts.

Where one punch can be the difference

between eternal glory and failure.

Strategy is key if you're going to take out the king.

Determined to reach the heights of boxing's greats,

Tyson got to work.

In the eighth round, the payoff, as Robinson

knocks out Sarins with a terrific punch to the body.

His jet-powered left clocked Mitri's eyes

and continually keeps the challenger off-balance.

- [Narrator] Training with his dad, John, as head coach

and Uncle Peter as his trainer,

Tyson took his training to the next level.

[soft piano music]

- [Tyson] Me, being in my mind, I think I'm

the greatest heavyweight that's ever been born. So...

- [Narrator] With the ambition of becoming

the greatest heavyweight that ever lived,

the goal was clear.

[intense percussion]

[inspirational orchestral music]

And the hard work paid off

when Tyson was given his first shot at a title.

When on the 23rd of July, 2011,

Tyson Fury would face Derek Chisora

for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles.

Beating Chisora by unanimous decision to win his first belt

as a professional, Fury wasn't satisfied.

Craving a shot at the Heavyweight World Championship,

he needed to make himself known.

Tyson Fury would become the villain.

- I'll fight David Price any day of the week.

You see, you, you plumber from Liverpool.

It's personal between me and you.

And I'm gonna do you some serious harm,

you big, stiff idiot.

Tyson became the person everyone wanted to see

flat on the canvas.

Opening the door for his first big fight,

and a ticket to a title shot. David Haye.

- A lot of people don't believe that Tyson deserves a shot.

But in my opinion, he does deserve it.

I mean, he's caused a lot of controversy.

People don't always say,

"When you fighting Klitschko again?"

They say, "When are you knocking out Tyson Fury?"

And it's not easy to get the world

to want that this desperately. Well, they have.

And here you are. We're gonna do it.

Because fans genuinely want to see this...

You know, he seems to have gotten under everybody's skin.

You know, he really has.

And I'm looking forward to giving the fans what they want.

He's claimed he's the best ever

Leaving Fury looking for another stepping stone

to the dominant Wladimir Klitschko.

In a rematch of their 2011 fight, Tyson took on Chisora

for the European WBO International.

And vacant British heavyweight titles.

- [Interviewer] Derek, how's the preparations for this been?

Uh, been going well, man.

[indistinct] 20 percent. I haven't stopped punching yet.

You know, for me, my hand is still hurt.

Still cracked inside, but can't say anything's wrong.

- [Narrator] Despite Fury being the challenger,

for his verbal tirade at a previous press conference.

Fury faced Chisora on the 29th of November, 2014,

winning the fight in the 10th round via corner stoppage.

Despite now holding the European,

WBO International, and British heavyweight titles,

there was only one thing on Tyson's mind:

Wladimir Klitschko.

One of the most dominant heavyweight champions of all time.

Holding the title for nearly 10 years and the prestigious

Lineal Heavyweight Championship title for six years,

Klitschko was the man everyone wanted to beat.

Ranked the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Unbeaten for more than a decade.

Tyson had a lot to do if he was to break the Klitschko era.

- [Klitschko] The man's an imbecile.

Seriously. I mean, you cannot

put it all together at once

and represent the sport of boxing?

And I just can't describe him as an imbecile.

What comes out of Fury's mouth

in statements that he've done.

He've done a lot of statements that are disrespectful.

- [Interviewer] But is the personality that people see

and have seen over the years the real you?

But like I said, it's personal life side.

I would like to get it across to people a bit more,

but you know, what I've said in the past

and what I've done has brought me to this position.

I saw fear and I saw nerves as I always do

when I look at Wladimir. When I face him.

I think he's very tense about this fight

and very uptight about it.

And he knows he's gonna lose this time.

I'm even wearing the brand of gloves that he wanted.

Because I wouldn't pick these, anyway.

They've had it all the wrong way in every single thing.

I don't believe he can do that.

If he does that, then I'll be like,

- I think I can win it on points, you know.

I'm not looking for a points decision,

but I reckon that if it does go to points

and I've won the fight clearly, then I'll win.

But if it goes to points and it's close,

I don't deserve to win. And I wouldn't wanna win.

Because I haven't snatched it. I've been given it.

when he fought Wladimir Klitschko

for the WBA, WBO, IBF,

and IBO world heavyweight titles.

Has it sunk in yet, do you think?

- [Tyson] I wouldn't have thought so. Not yet.

I've not recovered fully from the fight.

I'm still pretty sore. Neck's a bit sore. Head's a bit sore.

And...No. It's not really sunk in that I'm

the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Very special moment in my life. Very special.

and give him the credit he deserves.

Tyson's life took a dramatic turn.

- Not even boxing. That don't mean a lot to me.

Because if it did mean a lot to me,

I've had every pie in Lancashire

and drunk every pint of beer in the UK.

So clearly it doesn't mean anything to me.

Wladimir says he's excited, he's motivated, he's happy.

But, you know, I'm in this position and I'm gonna do it.

I've won more belts than any other person, I think, ever.

Where do we go from here? Look for some more big fights.

You know, there's not much else I can do, is there?

I've already wiped out the man

who nobody thought could get beat.

So I've already done the unthinkable.

- [Narrator] Falling into a pit of alcohol and drugs,

Tyson gained nine stone of weight.

- Yeah, after beating Klitschko, that was the Everest.

And I didn't feel there was much more to do after that.

It was like when you're a massive underdog in this world,

and you do something that you're not supposed to do.

And you do it very easy as well

to a so-called great champion. He was a great champion,

but he just wasn't on my level.

I know people have had time out the ring before.

But they've never ballooned up to 400 pounds ever.

- Well, it's unfortunate for the sport

because we want Tyson Fury in the division.

You know, certainly he's the promoter of Anthony Joshua.

We wanna fight Tyson Fury. It's a massive fight.

You know, could have been a unification

between two British world champions.

So, I think someone needs to get a hold of his mobile phone.

Get him off Twitter.

And, you know, get him the help that he needs to...

to get back into the sport.

- If you go back to the place that he was before,

it means nothing. As he already did, you know,

unified heavyweight champion of the world

before I started working with him.

And for him to end up in the position that he was in

when I did start working with him.

You know, nobody wants to see that

because all the other achievements mean nothing

when you're suffering with depression as he was.

- Of course, we wish him well. We want him in the sport.

But the fact is the sport will keep moving.

And when that heavyweight world championship

has been inactive for what will be soon, over 12 months...

You know, the governing bodies aren't gonna have it.

And it doesn't matter what I say.

It doesn't matter what Fury says or Anthony Joshua says.

They want that belt to be active.

[Narrator] Unable to compete,

Tyson was forced to vacate his world titles.

- [Newscaster] Tyson, how does it feel to be,

as it says in the poster behind you, back?

- Fantastic. It feels great, you know.

It's been a long time coming.

Trained very hard for a long period of time.

And I'm back. Look at me.

It got very dark and very down and depressing.

And all that stuff that comes with it.

But there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

And I did travel towards that light.

And I came out the other side, thankfully.

- [Interviewer] And what helped you do that?

- Determination, sacrifice, and professional help.

There wasn't all the hype around Joshua and Wilder.

They were just hot air at the time.

I didn't think there was much more to... to do.

I could've [indistinct], I suppose. But you know,

it's what drives one individual, isn't it?

So now I've got a few more challenges.

It's refreshing to me.

So it gives me something to strive for.

- [Interviewer] How close were you to actually

giving it all up? Never boxing again?

Well, I did give it all up.

And I didn't think I'd ever box again.

You know, I had three years out of the ring.

Well two and a half years out the ring, rather.

And at that time, I didn't think I'd ever box again.

I'd achieved everything in the sport.

I didn't need to achieve anything else.

But I came back this time

to give people hope and inspiration.

Help others that have gone through

the same battles that I've gone through.

- [Interviewer] That's your motivation now?

- Definitely a motivation. The sporting side of it,

I've been... It's been achieved.

To be very perfectly honest,

I had no love for boxing at all. Everything that went on...

I didn't want to box anymore. The fire was routed.

I was out for a long time. Over two years.

And it wasn't until coming up to [indistinct]

in the training camp that we realized.

I got talking to Ben, and you know.

We just gelled instantly. We wanted the same things.

His style suited me. And we haven't went back.

I invited him to come and stay at my house

and he's been there ever since. About five months later.

- [Narrator] Now training with boxing coach, Ben Davison,

Tyson got back to fighting fitness,

losing over nine stone in weight.

- You know, they're getting to know each other.

And obviously, you know, if Ben is getting the right things

he needs out of Tyson Fury and Tyson Fury is listening,

then obviously he is learning his craft.

And I think that's what you need to do.

Learn your craft and make sure you're the best at it.

In life, you have to progress, you know.

If he felt that he needed to move on to another trainer,

then that's what he feels he needs in his life.

So, you know, he's the one ultimately

that makes that decision. And he's the ultimate one that...

He has to make sure that it's the right decision.

- [Interviewer] And what do you think about

the shape you're in at the moment? Are you where you

- wanted to be? - I'm in fantastic shape.

Bang on the nail where I wanted to be. And I'm ready.

- [Interviewer] You lost an enormous amount of weight.

Yes.

- [Interviewer] To get where you are today.

How tough was that?

It was very tough. You know,

anybody who loses nine stone in weight deserves a medal.

It's been a long, hard road. Let's put it like that.

It's been very tough, but a lot of dedication and sacrifice,

you can achieve anything you want.

There is, you know.

The fans have been showing me a lot of love of late.

Suppose everybody loves a good comeback story. An underdog.

You know, before I was just a boxer sportsman.

But I seem to, with all the trials and tribulations,

I've gotten into a real person.

I think most people can relate to what I've been through,

where I've come from, what I'm doing.

And this isn't just a fight for Tyson Fury

and Frank Warren and whoever puts it on the TV station.

This is a fight for depression, for mental health problems.

This is to fight for everything because as we all know...

It's been no secret. It's well publicized.

I've been as low as anyone can go

and as high as anyone could go. And...

You can always overcome all these problems someone may have.

And I think people can relate to that.

When they see me fight again...

to come back from the brink of no return...

To get back to the top of the world.

That's gonna be a statement for mental health itself.

Tyson's done it.

Showed his determination that he wants to get back

and get these titles that he never lost in the ring.

He's looking in great condition.

You can imagine what he's gonna be like come fight time.

So I'm absolutely delighted that he's back.

The heavyweight scene needs him.

And he's the lineal champion and far as I'm concerned.

Until anyone beats him, they can't be considered to be

the true world champion. The public know that

and it's now up to him to get those titles back.

- It's a... It's a terrible, terrible battle.

Uphill battle, rather.

To lose that weight is mentally and physically draining.

To train nonstop for the best part of 12 months,

be in training camp after training camp after training camp

for something that you did to yourself...

You've gotta have a want in the brain, haven't you?

And I think I have got a bit of a want in the brain.

That's why I'm a sick boxer.

[Narrator] Unable to compete,

I needed rounds. And that was always the plan.

It was awkward to land on his big head quite clean,

He come a very resilient opponent. And I was very happy.

You know, we could have chose someone lighter early.

I wasn't overlooking Francesco Pianeta.

I had to get that job done.

And now I can focus and work on a game plan for Mr. Wilder.

He's not gonna be easy. He's not gonna be an easy fight.

He's gonna be the hardest fight I've ever had in my life.

Reason being, he's very awkward. Very unconventional.

But providing that, if I miss all of that, I should win.

then rematch to one he went the distance with

and knocked him out. He's a fearsome puncher for sure.

Very much so. But I've got a fighting spirit,

a fighting heart. And, you know, God is with me.

What do you make of Tyson Fury?

Is he a threat to you or not?

- He's not a threat to me, you know what I mean?

I don't look at him, you know [indistinct]

as a threat, you know? I look at him more of a jokester.

He likes to have fun, you know?

He said he's a gypsy king, traveling.

He's, you know, so...

You know, in this sport,

I don't find him as a threat at all. You know?

I didn't really do anything.

Wilder got in my face, spitting and screaming

and poking me in the face. And that was it.

A bit of pushing and shoving went on,

but it was what it was.

Not many people would believe that I could come back

from 28 stone and mentally am well to challenge him

for the heavyweight championship of the world again

in only 12 months. This is a miracle, I believe.

And I believe it's gonna be a fairytale ending.

Tyson faced Deontay Wilder

for the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the world.

Oh, my goodness! Somehow Fury has managed to get up.

And I don't know what he was watching.

Like I said, make no mistake.

I'm not sitting here and I'm not happy with the draw.

But I'm a realist. I thought I won the fight.

I thought most people thought I won the fight.

completing one of the best comebacks

in the history of the sport.

And setting up a British superfight.

because they're only men with boxing gloves on.

And I beat both of them time and time again.

If we fought 10 times, I'd win 10 times out of 10.

So all's we need to do is stop messing around

and get the fights on.

in the fact that I'm gonna win the fight.

There was no more. He was finished.

But I dusted myself off and got back on the road.

to get to this position again. It's a dream come true.

I am living the dream.

That's why I'm so happy all the time and so positive.

What I dreamed about from being this big.

There is nothing else I wanted to do from being a kid.
