Talk about an apocalyptic dream

300,000 desert acres so smooth

you can see the
curvature of the earth.

Terrain so barren,
desolate, devoid of life,

it's as if it were built
for one thing... speed.

This is "ride,"
and we're in Utah.

Should we set a speed record?

And one of the
all-time kings of speed,

sir Malcolm Campbell, was
on for a still memorable record

down one of those salt flats.

In his super car blue bird,

sir Malcolm blazed
across the Utah desert

at a speed that
literally melted his tire.

Yeah, it's like
we're on the moon.

Out here it's like
being in another world.

I'm feeling a little lost.

Utah is the last frontier
of the old wild west,

a the place where
outlaws sought refuge

and pioneers could
forge their own reality...

This is cool out here.

My god. Are you kidding me?

Something my
companion on this journey

knows a thing or two about.

Yep, that's right...

I'm seeing Utah
with Johnny Utah.

You want some coffee? Yeah.

Keanu and I have talked
about going on a ride for years.

I literally have coffee.

And it's finally happening.

It's our first chance to
spend real time together.

And I can tell already

that this is gonna
be an epic ride.

Yeah, so the
bonneville salt flats...

I did a little bit
of the Wikipedia.

What I read was
that these two guys,

Joseph... like, a guy
who's searching...

I think it was
named after, I think...

Was it Joseph bonneville?

And then they were like, " I
wonder if we can go fast?"

Right. I want to say 1903, 1913.

I'm getting all
these facts wrong.

All of them are wrong.

But I just think it's funny
that, like, you know,

humankind coming out here

and wondering,
like, what can we...

What can we crank
up just a little bit more?

"Charles." "yes, Simon?"

"We have this car that's
got a huge engine in it.

It's top of the line,
new world, new thing,"

you know, before the
super highways were built.

Yeah, yeah.

And then they were
like, "put the pedal down."

And then, ever since then,
people have come out here

to see how fast they can go.

Yeah. I love
it.Motorcycles. Cars.

Here. There's more now,
and I'll give you that one.

So tell me about arch.

We started the company in 2011,

and this is the krgt-1.

I call it kind of Metro modern.

Yeah. It's beautiful.

But how come you've never
come out here to do this,

like, take your bikes out
here, just see how fast they go?

I don't know if I'm,
like, a speed demon.

How'd you get into
motorcycles in the first place?

When I was a kid, I grew
up in Toronto, Canada.

And every summer,
motorcycle gangs

would come into the yorkville.

I just remember
as a little, little kid,

11-year-old, going,
like, "freedom."

It felt like freedom.
It felt like alternative.

It felt like power.

You know, like,
"waah!" They'd come in.

Camaraderie, the whole thing.

And so it began.

I like that you're,
like, a dude-dude.

You know, like, you're
sitting on the ground,

getting filthy, drinking coffee,
talking about stuff like this.

It's nice to see you on
the ground. No, it's nice.

Get the opportunity

Utah is an extraordinary state.

There's no other state like
it because of the culture.

Utah's heritage was
a bunch of pioneers

coming through the mountains
and selecting this valley

said, "this is where we belong."

Utah is a place where you can
just really find your own niche.

You can come here and you
can make a life for yourself

in whatever it is
that you want to do.

That rebel spirit, that
independent spirit,

you can see it every single day.

A lot of people come
here, and they stay forever.

What's not to love, honestly?

Your bike is covered in salt.

I didn't get to the
fastest this bike could go.

I think I need another
couple of runs.

Leaving the
bonneville salt flats,

we'll head east into the city
founded by brigham young.

Making our way south,

we'll visit a world-class
racing team in summit county

before achieving
peak sensory overload

in the canyonlands national park

and the final ride to moab

for a celebration of
motorcycles and fire

a three-day, 500-mile
journey through the sparse

but otherworldly Utah desert.

Whoo! Utah.

It is pretty, isn't it?

But, you know,
like, I'm gonna miss

riding motorcycles in
Georgia, that's for sure.

How many months out
of a year would you shoot?

Eight months, but
this last season,

we did almost a
year and a half solid.

Now, I remember when
I did "matrix" 2 and 3,

that was 22 months.

It's so groundbreaking,
"the matrix."

Just kinda pick up something
new every time you watch them.

They're great.

The best Sci-Fi has something
to say about who we are

and what we are
and what we're doing.

Yeah.

So much of it was just
foresight into the world

that we live in now
and simulation, ai.

All sorts of roads you could
go down from "the matrix"

to apply to the modern world!

Modern world!

On the highway!

Into the future.

What the heck are
we doing, reedus?

What are we doing?!

What are we doing, man?

That, I don't know.

But what we're
doing now is hitting

a salt lake institution,
garage on Beck...

Can I have a waffle now?

An old auto-body
shop that now serves

the best chicken
and waffles in town.

It's where we're meeting
up with a few of the locals

responsible for showing
this place a good time.

Pretty cool story.
I was 12 years old.

I went to scout camp

up in the high uintas
at a ute reservation

because Utah's name comes
from the utes that were here.

And we set up camp,
and I see this little furball.

And it's a wolf pup.

- Wow.
- It had a broken paw.

No.

So I raised, and she raised me,

a full timber wolf
for about 16 years.

- Wow!
- Wait. What?!

Yeah. Timber wolf.

What? Okay, so you
have a timber wolf,

what, in your house?

You can have wild animals here.

You just have to have a
license and enough land.

Was it still the
hunter all the time?

Yeah, she buried her
food, howled at the moon.

Wow. That's so cool.

- That's awesome.

It started out just
with me by myself,

kind of a lone
wolf. Whenever I...

Awhooo! Yeah, that's
what's on my wolf helmet.

Over the years, it just kept
getting bigger and bigger.

I was gonna turn moab
into the sturgis of the west.

That was the plan. Then
moab pulled the plug.

- And do you ride as well?
- I do.

I, you know, create festivals

and own bars and book shows.

And what about you?

I love riding motorcycles.

And I kind of have an
event where I invite people

to my house to eat curry,

and then we go
for a ride together.

So you guys run this town?

At least the fun
parts of this town.

We just kind of want to see

what we can get
away with, you know?

I was born in Uruguay,
and an lds missionary

married my mother
and adopted me.

But in Utah I find camaraderie

'cause there's a lot of
people that look different.

And through the
church, it's connected us.

And both of us are
here because of that.

But Utah's got
something for everybody.

A lot of people just
associate the church,

but there's so much
more if you love adventure,

you love the outdoors
and motorcycles.

I was gonna say this... I
don't want to offend anybody,

but if you've not ridden in
Utah and you have a motorcycle,

why do you even ride, bro?

I think there's a mormon council

pick-up and drop-off out here.

You can tell it's Sunday

because everyone's
wearing their Sunday best.

There's a lot of people.

Welcome to Utah!

Salt lake city's origins

are intertwined
with the lds church.

Back in 1847, the
mormons settled here,

hoping to build a new utopia.

And their influence can be seen
today in the layout of the city.

This is us. This is our window.

Wow. These hills are
out of nowhere. I like it.

Yeah. And these are the avenues.

They're the oldest part
of downtown salt lake.

It was built as a grid
around the temple.

So the temple's the
center of the universe.

And everything is
north, south, east, west,

progressively
increases in numbers.

We're gonna pop out behind
the capitol, the state capitol.

There's the wasatch mountains.

Yeah. Those are great.

Yeah, it's one of the few places

where you can be 90
degrees in the valley

and then hit a snowstorm
at top at 10,000 feet

at mirror lake pass.

Anyone know what
my favorite thing

about salt lake city is?

What's that?

Everything outside
of salt lake city.

You point your
bike in any direction,

and you'll find
something magical.

And that's exactly what
Keanu and I are going to do.

I mean, this is beautiful.

Like, can you imagine
living on that lake?

Wow. That's cool.

Humans just playing
on planet earth,

the rock in space.

For people who
love the outdoors,

this is the place to be.

There's everything...
Hockey, skiing, skating.

Anything you can imagine,
you can do it here in Utah.

Beautiful landscapes,
snow-topped mountains.

There's seven major
peaks that can be hiked,

ten major ski resorts
that can be accessed.

I'm geeking out on the
beautiful snowy mountaintop.

Utah obviously is the
greatest snow on earth.

Super epic and magical here.

- Dude, did you eat?

I have to admit, Norman,

I was counting on the
breakfast this morning.

All right. Should we
get some breakfast?

Yes, please. Let's go.

We're on our way to the desert.

But first, a quick stop for
the day's most important meal.

Yes. I played a lot of pool

and, played a lot of hockey.

And it was all very exciting.

She was like,

"I'm just gonna take a
cameraman and camera

and go up in the
plane with Patrick,

and you go do your thing."

So all of that
stuff that he did,

he ended up doing
at the end of the film.

You can see he's,
like, doing tricks

in the air and everything.
Is that really him?

He was doing
somersaults and everything.

Yeah. It's really

Yeah. So it's why
that's in the movie.

If you're lucky,

you cross paths with that
someone who inspires you

to look inward,
challenges you to be better.

And those lessons that you
take with you last a lifetime.

we've got big
plans in the desert.

But before escaping town,
we're making an 11-mile detour

to the mountain town of peoa.

It's where for the last 12 years

the good folks at
rancho Luna lobos

have been transforming
underdogs into champions.

Smells like sled dogs.

Is that what we're doing?

We're gonna go
see some sled dogs?

Yeah. All right.

I'm excited. It's really cool.

Wait. So you've dog sledded.

I was in lap land, actually,
when I was dog sledding.

It was cool.

I bet it was cool.

Is there... is there
anything you haven't done?

Not really.

So you guys rescue
puppies here, right? We do.

We're like a rescue
and rehabilitation.

We do a lot of...
this is kind of like

what we'd want to be a
sanctuary for animals and for dogs,

and we use dog sledding
as a form of therapy.

But this is mainly about
every dog living their best life

and every human
getting to live their best life

while they're here as well.

How'd you guys get into this?

I've been racing
since I was a kid.

I grew up just up
the road in park city.

And when Dana and I
got married, I asked her,

I was like, "what would you
think about rescuing dogs

and living in the
middle of nowhere?"

You know? She was
like, "sign me up."

This is like heaven.

Awesome. Okay.
We'll take you this way.

My god. You guys
are cute. Hi, buddy.

- Good girls.
- Hi. Hi. How are ya?

- Welcome to the ranch.
- Wow. They're so cute.

About 55 acres.
Everything you see here,

my husband I
have built together.

We are about 85% rescue.

Majority of those
were surrendered over

or dropped off on our doorstep.

So we believe in
being dog listeners,

not dog whisperers.

And it's our job to
figure out what it is

that they want to teach
us through their journey.

I think this one is
teaching me to take a nap.

Who's the fastest?

The fastest dog in our
entire kennel is nickel.

She's an Alaskan husky
mixed with a greyhound.

They actually have a
higher red blood cell count,

so they process oxygen better.

So it's kind of like a
natural superpower.

They can just have
that extra energy boost.

What's this guy
who's super friendly?

Lily. This is Lily.

She's a pyrenees-malamute mix.

Lily needs a Tic Tac.

- She does.
- She does.

You need a Tic Tac.

This is nanuk.

Nanuk is a high-content
Canadian gray wolf

timber wolf-malamute
mix, so she's 85% wolf.

The wolf hybrids are actually
becoming a really big problem.

People see shows that have
all these awesome-looking

wolf hybrids, and they want one.

And they don't realize
they're not exactly dogs.

They have a very
high prey drive.

I would never bring a
little dog out here with her.

They'd probably be lunch.

But the main reason is that
they can be Alpha over you,

which is pretty dangerous.

That word was "prey drive"?

- Prey drive.
- Yeah.

This one over here next to
my head is the one that's...

That might eat me, yeah.

So do they get to run
around, like, out here?

They do. We'll load up
and we'll go for a ride.

This is one of the main
reasons we keep them fit.

So they're not
pulling any weight.

We just create some tension.

So they literally think
they're pulling us up this hill.

- Really?
- Yeah.

So just feel free to cheer
them on as we're going.

It's funny how quiet they

It actually came from
the mining days up with...

The prospectors
in Alaska used it

for their mules in California,

but when they went
up to Alaska, you know,

you could only use
wagons for so long.

So when they had to
depend on the sled dogs,

they taught their lead
dogs the same commands.

Good girl.

You guys are so strong.

This is them pulling
us right now, a Jeep.

Utah has always been a place

where people come to
do things their own way.

And up in these hills,
Fernando and Dana

have found the place
to follow their dreams...

films are very intense.

Wild west mining towns aren't
supposed to exist anymore,

especially not like this.

Across this country I've seen
so many old industrial centers

that are struggling to survive,

communities that
progress left behind.

So being out here and
finding this restored main street,

I've gotta find out
what's going on.

You guys on a little road trip?

Yeah, came up
from salt lake city.

Beautiful ride. Twisting road.

That hour ride is...

You know, up through
the canyon is just the best.

There's a lot of
cool history here.

- Americana.

This slowly turned
into more of a museum

type of get-up
than a real garage.

A lot of times people
stumble in here,

and it's so fun. People
are just like, "whoa!"

What is this place?
What's going on?"It is fun.

These are both 1957 corvettes.

You done any restoration?

Yeah, so it was
pretty extensive.

We got it so it's street able.

I mean, you can drive
it and drive it hard.

Ooh, that smell. Look at that.

I can smell. I love that smell.

It smells like my dad. Yeah.

It's a true barn find.

It sat in a barn
for over 50 years.

These are great.

We just got this the other day.

It was all original,

but a couple items
are still original paint.

It feels like a bicycle.

- It does feel like a little.
- - like a leprechaun.

Right. It's crazy that
they rode these in the war.

Like, my dad wrenched on these.

He was stationed in
Australia at the end of the war.

And I remember him
telling me they were taking

all these things and
dumping them in the ocean.

He the reason you started...

Well, absolutely. I
mean, as a little kid, yeah.

I mean, I just
grew up around it.

He's really into
preservation and, you know,

old, historic things, so now
this work has transformed

from restoring bikes and cars

to this town and just
bringing it back to life.

Coming through here
for a ride, saw the town.

It was pretty
dilapidated, you know,

so my mind was just
going 100 miles an hour

because everything
was unoccupied almost.

So I was just like, "wow, man.

This could be cool to make
the whole town how it was,"

because as it's
being discovered,

you don't want just
developers coming in

- and taking a quick, easy.
- - yeah. To make a buck.

You've done a great job.
You've done a lot with it.

I love these buildings.

There's almost like
a David lynchie thing

going on, too, which is cool.

You're just in your
own world out here.

It sounds like the town itself

wants to remain something,

and they've picked you
to keep it like that way.

We're meeting some
pretty good folks,

spiritual people, you know,
manifesting in their way.

We've got a long
stretch of road.

It's kind of like "my
own private Idaho."

I do know that road.

Look how sophisticated you

Well, there's many
ways to skin the cat.

It's nice out here. Yeah, it is.

Day three.

We're headed into
Utah's holey land region.

That's "holey" with an "e,"

named for all of its arches
and unique rock structures.

Leaving Emery county, we're
on a 60-mile shot southeast

until reaching
canyonlands national park,

a 227,000-acre wonderland

of sweeping vistas and sandstone

carved out by
the Colorado river.

Utah is often referred to

as the center of scenic
america, and justly so.

From one end of
the state to the other

are national and state
parks and monuments.

Utah very much
cares about its land

and preserving
it for the future.

And we have a very, very
large amount of public land here.

Five national parks, so
we call it the mighty 5.

We have canyonlands,
arches national park,

Zion national park, Bryce
canyon, and capitol reef.

The most insanely
beautiful places in the world.

I wonder if this used to
be the bottom of an ocean?

Yeah, right?

It just looks like one giant
sculpture everywhere you look.

As I'm getting older,

I'm finding myself
thinking about geology.

Really?

So, like, looking at all these
rocks and the stratifications,

what shaped it,
how did that happen?

I like... I like listening
to the inner workings

of your mind.

Danger everywhere.

All right. Here it is...
Canyonlands national park.

There's real history
in these rocks.

Back in the '50s, miners
scoured this land for uranium

as america's appetite
for atomic energy grew

and cold war fears heightened.

And when this place
was the wild west,

butch Cassidy used this
inhospitable terrain to hide out

and avoid the law after his
outlaw crew's legendary heists.

This looks like it
just cracked open.

"Human activities have
changed the face of canyonlands."

The roads and seismic lines
you see below were constructed

in the '50s in a search
for uranium and oil.

Full biological recovery
will take many years

"in this arid environment."

So this tells us the
impact of man on it.

But where's the
knowledge of, like,

what the heck is going on here?

What bore out this?

Well, right here you can
see a giant alien handprint

that went down into the ground.

dug their tunnels underneath us

for uranium to build

Wow. It is really peaceful
and pretty up here.

Moab has always been
kind of a hidden gem.

It is these rock formations
out of sandstone.

Iconic red rocks and structures
and hoodoos and things.

Landscape that
looks almost like Mars.

You can't help but
just look around in awe

at what you're seeing, and
it almost doesn't look real.

We're in the homestretch.

It's the final 32-mile ride

to the outskirts of
arches national park

for a motorcycle
bash in the desert.

This is intense.

My god.

Are you kidding me?

These roads!

Look at this turn. My god.

Go to the outside
this turn right here.

Third gear, fourth gear, top, ,

outside, coming in.

Whoa!

Picturing you having sex

and having... having
this kind of dialogue.

"Ooh, look at this right here."

All right. Colorado river.

The Colorado flows south
through Utah and Arizona.

Much of this region
is dry wasteland,

and the river itself

Grand Canyon and then lake mead.

And then it pretty much almost
dries up in yuma, Arizona.

Whoa.

And never makes it to the ocean?

So it used to go all the
way to the sea of Cortez.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

The mighty Colorado...

The lifeline of the
American southwest,

twisting and slicing
through 1,500 miles

of deserts and mesas.

It provides water for
nearly 40 million people,

from Tucson to Los Angeles.

Are you native Utah... utanians?

So we are.

And so we grew up
in salt lake together,

actually went to the same
junior high, same high school.

Moved down to moab
about 20 years ago

to work on the river
'cause it's amazing.

Yeah.

And we were just gonna
do one season here.

And then 20 years
later, here we are

'cause it's awesome!

She's right. This place
is pretty awesome.

But rising temperatures,
drought, and years of overuse

mean immediate action is
needed to keep the water flowing.

And it's my hope
that, in 20 years' time,

Annie and Cassidy will
still be out on Colorado,

soaking tourists and
showing them a good time.

Is this all a giant simulation?
Is this all really happening?

That I can't answer.

But it's already acknowledged
that consciousness,

the human brain,
already has to tell a story

to make this real.

and meet the Norman

don't wait for life to happen.

They get out and live it.

It's a place where
improbable ideas

create new worlds.

And for a state that's
all about ingenuity,

couldn't script a
more perfect ending,

and I'm happy to have
shared it all with Keanu.

Look at what you're helping
people be a part of, you know? Yeah.

Not only an amazing place
in nature that is inspiring,

awe-inspiring, and beautiful,

but, you know, the
people and being together

and playing with their craft,
playing with, you know, food,

with each other, with
humor, with life, sharing spirit,
