Through my work on this little project called "Ride,"

I've had the privilege to travel to places

that I've always wanted to see...

a good excuse to embed myself in the local scene,

meet some innovative people,

and learn a bit along the way.

But the fact is, no matter where you wander,

there's no shortcut for assimilation,

no easy way to unlock local nuance

and the unspoken subtleties of everyday life.

That only comes with time.

Costa Rica is where I own a home and go to escape.

But shuttling in and out of here between projects,

I've always felt like a visitor passing through.

So I'm taking this trip to immerse myself

in the people and culture of a country that I love.

when you think of Costa Rica.

But I promised this guy... Go, go, go!

A quick race before starting out.

Dom Rocket and I met back in the '90s

while throwing back shots in sleazy New York City bars.

With a shared affinity for raising hell,

he and I became fast friends.

Don't quit now, Norman.

I made contact.

Got the team back together.

For the last few years, Costa Rica has been my refuge,

but spending my days here on dirt bikes and sunny beaches,

I'm still just an outsider looking in.

So this visit, I'm seeking out a more authentic way of life.

The Republic of Costa Rica, a working democracy.

Costa Rica is a happy nation

of small farms owned by individual farmers.

Costa Rican landscape is a tropical country.

We have lots of beaches, mountains, volcanoes.

We have 2.5% of the world's biodiversity.

We were the first country in the world to abolish the army.

Our education is free in Costa Rica.

We are known for the friendliness

of the people and pura vida.

Pura vida is like saying in English, "pure life."

It's a term that is based in peace, democracy,

sharing with friends, sharing with neighbors.

That's the heart of pura vida.

Over the next three days, we'll depart

the capital city of San José and venture 150 kilometers

into the forest and coffee fields of Monteverde.

After a quick stop in Pitahaya, we'll take a 70-kilometer ride

down the coast into the beach town of Jaco.

It's my chance to start becoming a part of this place,

and an opportunity to catch up with my long-lost friend.

You want to get some breakfast? Yeah, man, let's do it.

I mean, first time I met you, you had a mohawk.

You know what I mean? We started up a conversation.

I was in a punk band, and I had a mohawk.

And I know for a decade at that time,

me and you probably saw each other almost every day.

All day, every day. Yeah. Every day.

You know, you're like my brother. Yeah, bro.

And we used to fight like brothers. Oh, yeah, I know.

Throw each other through tables and stuff.

Mm-hmm. We did that at Piano's bar.

We did it several places, as well.

And we changed the subject real quick.

Yeah, that's right. I was trying not to lose the ring.

I was terrified. You were.

I know I'm gonna lose it. I'm gonna lose it.

I tell my friends, like, Dom's, like, a real friend of mine.

He's never seen the show. I tried to watch it once,

and I was like, "This is weird seeing Norman like..."

Being all redneck? You were like...

That's not Norman. Who's that dude? Yeah.

You remember whenever we used to be able to hang out together,

and nobody would come up to you?

Yeah, those were the days, yeah.

You remember those days? For sure, yeah.

And I remember when you started "The Walking Dead,"

and it was just, like... Like every year,

it started to get, like, crazier and crazier.

From that moment on, it was like, couldn't go anywhere.

Yeah, man. So, what made you decide on Costa Rica?

I just fell in love with this place.

It had a... I needed a getaway place.

I needed a place where it wasn't so hectic,

and I could escape everything.

I kept falling in love with this place

over and over and over again.

Right, I could do this... This is my escape joint, yeah.

I was told, throughout history, like, economically,

you could live off of less money

in this area more than any other area,

and that's where the pure life came from.

And that's the way everybody should be living, man.

It's pura vida right there. Pura vida, man.

You know what's amazing? The feeling I have right now

is the feeling I had when we were hanging out in New York

driving BMXs around.

So, we're going to a dog sanctuary.

How many dogs do you have here?

About 1,500.

It's been estimated Costa Rica has over a million stray dogs,

and since 2005, the lucky ones end up here,

roaming the tropical mountain land

known as the Territorio de Zaguates.

Translation... "Land of the Strays."

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Yeah, yeah, yeah! Yeah!

Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Oh, my God. Look at all the puppies.

I'm in heaven.

That is wild.

They're all vaccinated, spayed, neutered.

I bet nobody ever robs you.

Nope.

How big is this property?

- 300 acres. - Wow.

Yeah, so, what made you want to do this?

I felt horrible

for all these dogs on the street.

If you look, most strays are just looking for a family.

Yeah. Or at least a friend.

When I started this at my place,

I just took them in and tried to find homes for them.

I thought, "Well, I'm not gonna put them in a shelter.

I'm not gonna put them back on the street,

so they'll have to stay with me until somebody loves them."

Yeah. And I had dogs hang around

for six, seven years before they were adopted.

Oh, wow. But it worked.

We're a very young, really, society.

I mean, we're still farming.

We're still working on farms,

and people on farms don't see animals like family members.

Still, animals are considered protection or production,

and so it's been hard to educate people

about the proper way to care for an animal

or how to value that animal.

Truly, the ones we go after are the very old ones,

the very sick ones, so we try to do something about those.

Some are very, very sick, and they don't make it,

but at least if they die, somebody cared.

So, you basically run off of donations or...

Donations. These guys eat $800 almost a day.

What's your plans with this place?

Like, in a perfect world, what would you hope for?

In a perfect world, we wouldn't exist.

That makes sense. But I won't see the day

when shelters are not necessary.

But I'd like to be able to help as many dogs as I can,

hopefully continue with education,

bringing awareness to kids in school.

But I think they'll get better.

It's a good thing that you're, you know, doing this

'cause it's pretty amazing.

and that is a righteous and noble cause,

We begin day two with San Mateo in our rearview mirror.

It's a 75-kilometer stretch along Costa Rica Highway 1

into the mountain forests of Monteverde.

We're gonna go get some coffee at a coffee farm?

Yeah. Dude, Costa Rican coffee is the best.

Here, coffee is king,

its production and export being Costa Rica's leading industry.

The motto of the Costa Rican farmer

is a few acres and independence.

This is exactly what he has.

Coffee is the reason why Costa Rica is Costa Rica.

Coffee has been a great part of Costa Rican economical growth,

a specialty product that people around the world

knowing Costa Rica for.

What makes Costa Rican coffee so good?

One of the advantage of coffee in Costa Rica,

it comes mostly from small-scale farms.

We are today 41,000 families. Oh, wow.

And so when you buy Costa Rican coffee,

you are supporting communities.

We say that in Costa Rica,

coffee provided the economic democracy.

You guys have such a stable democracy in Costa Rica.

Is it the pura vida way of life?

Why do you think everything has run so smoothly in Costa Rica?

About 60 years ago, we abolished the army.

No more army, so you don't have the army debt.

That money comes to support school.

We have invested a lot of money in education.

Then more of the children can go to school.

Then you have the potential to be a leader

of your community, of your country.

So it's not only the rich people

who can be a congressman or a president.

It's about that.

Costa Ricans, we are very positive.

We were taught, in order to have a good life,

it's not much about how much you have.

It's about who you are

and how you're able to appreciate

and to say thanks to life and to nature.

Having very little, but all what I have,

we got from living in this nice community, people, planet.

It's about that.Yeah. Yeah.

It's a way of life.

we have close to 20 acres

known for its panoramic views of the Pacific and Caribbean.

If you're lucky, from its peak,

you can also catch Arenal Volcano,

until 2010, one of the most active in the world.

Riding in Costa Rica,

nowhere else packs so much biodiversity

into such a small place.

It's why decades of deforestation

and the effects of climate change are being felt hard,

as the delicate balance of nature is disrupted.

Costa Rica culture and nature go hand in hand.

Having nature around have made us more conscious

of where we are from

and how much we have to protect this little spot of land.

And we want to take care of it

as much as nature takes care of us.

We're heading to a spot that's committed

to helping those most in danger.

There's hope yet, my friend. There's hope for humanity.

This place is a very, very special place.

I really adore this place.

to reconnect with mankind.

The convention in Costa Rica has been running for 25 years.

And it's to join all the motorcycle clubs

in all the area from Mexico to Panama.

First time, it was 340 motorcycles,

and now it's 20,000.

There's vendors. There's party. There's concerts.

Nobody pays anything in the convention.

It's totally free.

So, that's a nice event. A rodeo?

along the Gulf of Nicoya into the resort city of Jaco.

For me, with the serenity of its shorelines,

Costa Rica's always been a beacon for relaxation.

And after our last two days,

it's something Dom and I could use a little more of.

So, we're headed to a beach town, right?

But this trip has given me a place to start.

In Costa Rica, happiness stems from co-existence with nature,

finding beauty in the simplest things,

and staying present in your surroundings.

For me, that's reconnecting with an old friend,

one that I'll look back on forever and just smile.
