There are several things pointing to that

If I'm right, the humans lost control over the robots

How exactly that happened is hard to say

It might have happened gradually, or a catastrophe, a war or something

Anyway, they lost control and the robots continued with what the were programmed for

And the robots understood quite correctly

that the biggest hindrance was mans own civilisation

That's why they systematically destroyed cities...

...factories, laboratories, all kinds of tools

They reduced the humans to naked apes

They literally forced man back to nature, to his natural habitat

The robots took the place as natures own guardians

So the foreign ship may have belonged to humans trying to escape
