Spanning eight countries in South America...

..the largest rainforest in the world.

A dense tropical wilderness.

A network of waterways, home to more wildlife

than anywhere on Earth.

And today they have company.

I've seen my son struggle.

I know that what he needs is a greater sense of

purpose, self-worth, confidence.

So something like this, of course we're going to

grab that with both hands.

Looks like we're going over to the city.

Out of the rainforest and over to Belem.

That is where it all begins.

In the far north of Brazil, the port city of Belem.

Once the indigenous region of Mairi,

in 1616, the Portuguese founded a colonial settlement.

Across the centuries, it grew into a strategic trading hub,

exporting rubber and sugar.

Oh, my giddy, giddy gosh, it is hot!

This place is mental. I've never seen anything like this before.

Next to join the race, multi-award winning

Ted Lasso series star Kola Bokinni and his cousin, Mary Ellen.

We wanted an epic adventure. Yeah. I think that is epic.

A journey of 12,500km from the Amazon to the finish line

in the almighty Andes.

To get there, they must pass through five checkpoints.

Only when they reach one will they learn where the next

will be, and they'll have to do it all for

£1,100 per team member - the equivalent cost

of flying there.

Wow, it's going to go pretty quickly.

Brazilian... Reais. And dollars.

A budget of around £36 each per day.

Do you think this is going to last us?

We just have to make do.

I'm kind of worried. Yeah. I thought it'd be a lot more.

With the race about to begin, the teams head to the start line

in downtown Belem.

I was kind of written off as a bimbo, and then I think

as the years went on, they were like,

But that's my resilience.

I might not look like a natural born winner.

When I was a kid, I was, like, the last one to be picked at games,

I was never sporty, but I do have determination.

It's here, near Fortaleza.

Teams will be navigating the fifth largest country in the world,

starting in the north in one of Brazil's least populated regions,

and travelling 1,750km through four states to the first checkpoint.

Canoa Quebrada.

A quintessential Brazilian beach town famed

for its red cliffs and white sands, known locally as

the Pearl of the East Coast.

Have you got the map? Have I got the map?

You've got the map.

That's the one responsibility you've got.

Let's map out where we're going.

To get there, they could hug the spectacular Atlantic coast,

encountering what Brazil is famous for -

wildlife and world-class beaches,

but also budget-busting tourist prices.

Or the cash conscious can head inland, taking fast highways

deep into the interior.

Along their way to the checkpoint through rural back country,

where even less English is spoken, but offering the chance

to explore traditional Brazil.

See, I always would prefer the coast,

but all of our holidays, we usually go to a beach resort.

I think that we try and do something different.

You think any beach town, how much they put their money up.

So if we go inland, not on the main tourist route, it'll be cheaper,

which means we save money. True.

Sam is one of the tightest people I've ever met in my life.

Um, and I say that with love.

I just like to make sure that I'm getting the best

value for everything.

So I'll set the dishwasher and washing machine at midnight

because it's a cheaper rate.

There's no point just splashing all our cash out

on that first leg. That's true.

To make it to the finish line, teams must work to top up

their budgets and have been provided with a directory of local jobs.

Braving the road less travelled,

Scott and Sam are heading 800km south

to work in the town of Carolina.

But first, a short 200km hop to a nature reserve in Braganca.

I'm not going to get us really close to the checkpoint, but it's easing

us into the race really gently. We'll see tomorrow. OK.

SAM:Let's get into the bus station, buy our tickets. Yeah.

What if there's no bus now? There'll be a bus.

With only two intercity train lines serving the entire country,

teams are at the mercy of Brazil's network of long haul buses.

Let's see how far towards Carolina we can go.

We've got three hours until we get onto that bus.

to the border with Tocantins state, one of the most sparsely populated

parts of Brazil.

on the first bus out to the coastal city of Sao Luis.

mangrove conservation belts.

These are the mangroves. Look at all the roots.

Brazil has over a million hectares of this vital ecosystem

teeming with biodiversity.

In return for last night's accommodation, husband and wife

are helping plant new saplings...
