Well, let's just start from the beginning.

The beginning would have been vacation Bible school.

And that would have started about 9:00 in the morning

with a service ceremony sort of thing, where I told one of my parables.

After the ceremony, I left the church

around 9:45, and got to Betty's around 10:00.

What was she doin'?

She'd just put the baby down,

and she was drinking a cup of coffee and

sewing something out of yellow material.

And she was about to watch "Phil Donahue."

So, after you got there?

Yes. We got to chattin' about what to do with the children.

And then, we went and played with the dogs 'cause they just got a new puppy.

And then, I told her about this new business

that I've started with Sherry Cleckler, a wallpapering and painting thing.

And then I showed her one of my cards and she thought that was cute.

And maybe I can leave some for you all.

After you showed her your business card?

I went into the utility room to get Alisa's suit

and Betty went to grab a towel to wrap it in.

And then she handed me some peppermint candies

because Alisa doesn't like to put her head under the water.

And so, she sort of just bribes her with the candies.

What did you have on, clothes-wise?

I was wearing a burgundy blouse and blue jeans.

What about shoes?

We picked up some footprints in the hallway

and we need to screen the prints for people we know

who were in the house.

I was wearing my blue tennis shoes.

- Rubber soles? - Yes.

Do you have those shoes?

Not with me but I could get them for you.

How long do you think you were in there, in total?

About 15 minutes.

And after?

After, I went to Target in Plano to get Father's Day cards

but I noticed my watch stopped.

It still said 10:15.

And so, I asked someone what time it was, and they said it was 11:10,

meaning I was already late for the puppet show.

And so, I drove straight to the church

and got there around 11:30 for the luncheon.

And I didn't know that anything was wrong until about 8:30

when Allan called me to tell me

that he was having a hard time getting ahold of Betty.

I'm not saying cancel it altogether. Just, you know, postpone it some.

Yes, I realize that they wanna go and we will.

It's just under the circumstances,

it's not the best time to go to Six Flags, that's all.

Not just that she was a popular school teacher,

but, bear in mind, this is the first murder

of any kind in Wylie in 25 years.

That it was committed with an axe against an innocent woman

in her own home in a nice neighborhood,

you can understand why this whole community is on edge.

She was a loving mother, a loyal wife, a committed person of faith.

How can a thing like this happen

to a person who is so needed by her family?

A mother so needed by her children.

A daughter so loved by her parents.

Perhaps there will be those who look to God

and say that He has some eternal purpose in all of this.

I cannot accept that.

The notion that God would will something like this upon anyone.

This was not God's will.

His will has been thwarted by the actions and behavior of humanity.

Humanity seems too kind a word.

A monster.

When things like this happen,

God's will and purposes then change to His ultimate will.

This act was unnatural.

It was evil.

I'm sorry, but I feel like we've been over this.

Well, with me, you have, but I want these boys to hear it as well.

But we're trying to be as painstaking as possible.

I appreciate that.

How were things with your marriage?

- They were good. - Yeah? She was secure in it?

There was a time when she wasn't.

You know, we've

we had our issues, specifically over the travel.

She battled postpartum depression, which was a strain,

but things were improving of late.

We'd gone to a church program called Marriage Encounter

and things were improving.

So you can't think of anybody that'd wanna hurt your wife?

No. She didn't have any enemies,

or...

She wasn't too popular at her school with her students.

One time, our house was vandalized, but I can't imagine

that.

You said that on Friday evening, and then again on Saturday,

you had several conversations with Candy Montgomery?

Yes.

Now, I apologize for having to ask this, but can you think of a time

where Betty might have had an affair with another man?

Yes, in 1971.

We were living in Las Cruces.

It was a time when I was traveling.

She had a one-night stand with a college student there

at New Mexico State.

I don't believe she ever had another affair

with any other man since then.
