So let's talk about regions, so Microsoft built a lot of data centers, for example, we saw before

a photo of one of such data center East Data centers.

Location is called Ridgen, and there are roughly 60 Asia regions, which is more than any other cloud

which makes Azure, if you love this public cloud region is now, as we will see later, almost every

5

new resource in the cloud should be allocated to a region.

So when we build a new virtual machine, for example, we tell Asia in which region it should be built.

Now, this map, which is constantly updated and you should take a look at the link at the bottom of

8

the screen to see the updated version of it outlines the current map of regions of Asia.

Now, as you can see, there are quite a few regions and also there are quite a few types of regions.

Take a look at the legend at the left of the slide.

As you can see, there are available regions in northeast regions, availability zones, announced availability

12

zones and announced region with availability zones.

Now, right now, you probably have no idea what an availability zone is.

And we will talk about it in a minute.

But you can see that there are quite a few regions that were announced and are not ready yet.

For example, right at the middle of the screen, you can see Israel Central.

This region was announced about a year ago and it should be up and running by the end of 2021.

Now, if you count the number of regions on this map, you will find out there are roughly 60 of them.

So, as you can see, Asia is spread across all the world and you can find actual regions on all continents.

Now we're discussing regions.

We should also understand what is zone.

So some of the regions have more than one physical data center and this is great for availability in

23

case one data center is true.

This is quite true, but it may happen.

So each physical data center is called zone.

And so when there are more than one data center in a region, the region is said to have availability

zones.

As we will see later, some cloud services benefit from availability zones, and they have the capability

29

of skipping from one zone to another and do it quite transparently.

So if it will take another look at the map, then look again at the legend and see the availability

zones available.

So this symbol designates that this region has more than one zone.

For example, you can see that in West you is to there are more than one zone in Canada, central also

34

West Europe, Japan, East and Australia east.

And of course, these are just examples.

Take a closer look at the map and you will see there are lots more of regions with availability zones.

The next concept you should be aware of is the regions.

Now, what this means is that some regions have designated per region.

This is done for increased availability so that when a full region, including all its zones, fails,

then the other one can feel its place.

This is relevant for some of the cloud services, although to be fair, not many of them know the region.

Pills are set by Azure and cannot be changed.

So we can't decide that for a specific service, the region will be Region X and for another service

it would be region way.

The pearls are set up by Azure and cannot be changed.

So if you will again take a look at the map, we will see the regions.

And of course, this again is only an example and there are more.

But as you can see, central U.S. and east US to our peers, also North Europe and West Europe are pearls

and in addition, Central India and South India uphills.

So that means that, for example, if I have a database which have a general application and we will

talk in length about your application later, then the replicated data will go to the region so that

52

if the region is the primary region fails, then the data is available at a secondary or the region.
