So as a reminder, this was the situation before the cloud, we had to take care of ourselves on all

aspects of the server management and also, of course, and databases, networking and so on.

In addition, we had this problem that we had a lot of wasted money going for an unused compute power.

And here comes the cloud.

And what exactly is the cloud?

Will the unscientifically definition of the cloud is this.

The cloud is compute networking, storage and other services managed by someone else.

That means that they're all around the world, huge data centers filled with servers, networking,

storage and all other things that someone else is responsible for them to work properly.

And that brings us to cloud providers.

What a cloud provider.

Well, these are companies who build those huge data centers.

They fill it with servers, networking, cooling, electricity, etc. and also they design and install

value services.

And then after they do that, they make it publicly accessible.

So basically, we have a huge server farm that someone else is taking care of and we can just come and

use it.

How exactly we will see in a minute.

And here is an example of such a data center.

This specific data center is Microsoft Outlook Data Center in Washington.

And it also must be said that this is one of the smaller data centers.

Most of Azure and other public cloud data centers are much larger.

So this is how it looks from the outside and this is how it looks in the inside.

This specific data center is, again, of Microsoft Azure and it is located in the Netherlands.

Now, in a typical data center similar to this, there are usually hundreds of thousands of physical

servers.

There are some larger ones.

There are some smaller ones.

But this is the ballpark.

Now, these data centers, as we said before, contain not only servers, networking, storage, etc.,

but they also have cloud services.

Now, what exactly are cloud services?

Well, clouds are huge and the competition is fierce, as we will see later in this section.

And that means that the cloud providers offer a lot of additional services in addition to just Billabong's

virtual machines and networking, most of them offill, also AIU, as in artificial intelligence, Iot

as in Internet of Things capabilities, which we will talk about later in this course and lots more.

In fact, a typical cloud provider or fills hundreds of cloud services.

Naturally, we want to go over all of those, but we will discuss the most important ones.

So in the cloud era, if you need a server, you can just created in the cloud within minutes.

Of course, we will see exactly how to do that.

We can use it as we wish.

We pay only for what we use.

We can shut it down.

We're not needed.

And then, of course, we stop paying for it.

And this virtual machine server is automatically maintained, patched, secured and monitored by the

cloud provider.

All of these are tasks that we and our team shouldn't do anymore.
