Hello. My classmates.

We're already in the last chapter of our class, chapter 6.

In this chapter, we're going to make an illustration

with simple frame animation.

First of all, frame animation is

when you design the movement of an object separately

and watch it continuously at high speeds,

it looks like an object is moving.

Each one of these movements is called a frame.

In this chapter,

we'll be using a program called Photoshop.

Photoshop is a subscription-based program

when you only use a single item, and it costs US$20.99 a month.

There are also an occasional or student discount plan

also offers a seven-day trial,

so please look up the details on their website.

so it might be a bit of a burden, but it's a must-use software

to create illustrations and merchandise.

I think it's a good opportunity

for those who are trying it out for the first time.

You don't necessarily need Photoshop

to create the frame animation.

It's a little cumbersome,

but if you need very simple animation,

all you need is the Internet and the SAI tool to build it.

I'll tell you about that at the end of the lesson.

In this lesson, we're going to change

a layer and start with simple animations

to learn how to use Photoshop.

If you're new to Photoshop,

follow along pausing the lesson from time to time.

Let's use the illustration from Chapter 5 as an example.

Let's rotate this flower 360 degrees

and make the neon signs glow.

For the neon sign,

I made the letters separate.

I also made a separate layer for the flower, too.

We will save this file

to be able to connect with Photoshop

by clicking save as and the file format will be psd.

And if you open the file on Photoshop

then all of the layers are maintained as in SAI tool.

And in the top menu,

if you click window and timeline

you will see a timeline menu bar.

If you press the Make a Frame Animation button,

you will see a box with 1 on it.

This box represents the first frame.

Now, drag the flower layer

onto the new layer icon and copy it.

On the left menu bar, press Move tool,

select the automatic selection and transform control,

then click on the flower layer and you'll see a rectangle.

And if you rotate the flower a little bit

while holding the shift

it would exactly rotate 15 degrees.

So I'm going to take this 15-degree flower layer and duplicate it.

In the same way, let's rotate them while holding the shift.

Copy the layers

and rotate them 360 degrees.

Repeat it 24 times because

it will rotate 15 degrees at a time.

But when you complete the 360 degrees at the end,

it will look the same as the first layer.

Since the frame animation continues from the beginning to the end,

if there are two layers then that look the same,

so we'll erase the last layer.

There are 24 layers in total.

The same goes for the frame. It needs to be 24 frames.

Click on this plus icon on the timeline

and create 24 frames.

Go back to the first frame

and turn on only the first layer of the flower.

Select the second frame

and turn on only the second layer.

That way, the appearance of the first frame

and the second frame will be different.

Keep going on it.

If you turn on the eyes of the third layer

on the third frame,

it makes the flower look like it's rotating.

I'm going to turn on the eyes of the rest of the frames.

I will do it carefully because

I don't want to mess up the order.

I'm going to turn on the last layer.

By clicking play on the timeline, I'm going to play it with the preview.

It's working.

Now, "Continue" from the timeline has been selected.

If you select "one time,"

it will play only once

in the first frame until the last frame and then stop.

You can specify how many times you want it to play.

This time,

because we are going to create a loop animation,

we will select "Continue".

It will play until the very end

and come back to the first frame and repeat it.

However, for each frame, it says zero seconds,

which means the duration of the frame is revealed.

If it's set at 0 seconds,

each frame will pass by

almost instantaneously.

If you extend the duration here,

you'll see one frame longer.

If I select all the frames at once and change

the duration of the frame to 0.2 seconds,

the flower will rotate slower than before.

Now, let's add a glow effect

to the neon sign

without touching the flower group

and change the layers of the neon group.

As I arranged from SAI tool,

layers of each letter are separated.

First, set the opacity value

of the layers of all the letters as 30.

If you turn the eyes of the layer off completely,

it will look empty, and it will be too flashy

so lowering the opacity will be enough.

On the second frame, select the S layer

and bring the opacity back to 100.

In the third frame, change the opacity

of the two layers S and E to 100.

In the fourth frame, the S, E, and L will be clearly visible.

In the fifth frame, you'll be able to see the F,

the sixth frame, the I,

and the seventh frame, all the letters will be turned on.

If you replay it once,

it looks like each letter turns on one by one.

Let's make all the letters turned on and last a little while,

and make them blink twice at the same time.

I'm going to keep it on for about frame 12,

then turn it off again at frame 13,

turn it on at frame 14,

turn it off at frame 15.

I'm going to keep it on from frame 16.

When I play it back, it looks like this.

But when I play it back,

I thought it would be nice to start with about frame 11,

so I'm going to turn off from frame 11

and turn on frame 12,

and we're going to keep 13, 14 frames.

and frame 15 should be turned on.

You can change the timing of the movement.

This time, we simply created an animation of the effect

of an object spinning and the effect of a neon sign turning on.

We should save this as a moving image.

The method of saving is slightly different.

Export from File,

click save as web.

You have to make sure that your setting here is GIF

so that they are stored as what we call GIF, moving images.

You can also set how many times you want to repeat the animation

in the looping option at the bottom.

You don't have to worry about this statement.

If you open the saved folder and check,

it's saved as an image file that moves like this.

But sometimes, GIF file format

is not supported such as Instagram.

In that case,

click Export from File and Video Render

nd change the format of the file to H.264

to make it an MP4 video file.

I think you're starting to get the hang of the frame animation.

As long as you understand the basic principles,

it's a bit troublesome,

but you can animate without Photoshop.

This time, we will make a GIF with a neon sign

using only the Internet and the SAI tool.

First, we will start with all the letters turned off.

Just like what we did in Photoshop,

set the layer's opacity to 30.

And I'm going to save it by clicking save as,

the file format for either a PNG or a jpg.

Since this file is going to be the first frame,

the name of the file is going to be 1.

And I'm going to set the opacity of each letter to 100

and save it as a separate image file one by one.

The image with the S is the second frame,

so I saved the file name as 2.

I'm going to adjust the opacity of the rest of the letters

and save by specifying the file name n the order of the frame,

The letter E is the third frame,

L will be the fourth frame,

F for the fifth frame,

I will be the sixth frame,

the last E will be saved as the 7th frame.

If you look in the saved folder,

I saved it as an image file in the order of frames.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to turn these frames into one GIF with continuous playback.

Go to a website called ezgif.com.

I'll upload the link to the class notebook.

By clicking Upload the image from GIF Maker

select all the image files that we created.

Then press the blue button, Upload and Make a GIF!

And then we get this screen.

We've got seven frames that we've created.

And I can set a frame time here, Delay.

So down here at the bottom what 20 means is a 20/100 second,

or 0.2 seconds in Photoshop.

So I'm just going to make this a 0.2 seconds.

From this Loopcount section, you can decide

how many times you want this animation to repeat.

If you don't set the number and leave it blank, it repeats indefinitely.

I'm going to leave it blank

and press the Make A GIF button.

If you scroll down, you can see

that the animation file with the neon sign is created.

By pressing the save button,

you can save a GIF file on your computer.

As long as you know how a frame animation works,

you don't need Photoshop

to make a simple animation.

In this lesson, we made simple animations

by rotating one layer

or specifying one layer's opacity.

In the next lesson, we'll draw one movement for each frame

and make a more difficult animation.
