Hello. My classmates.

In this chapter,
we're going to place the characters and objects

in a three-dimensional space

to create an illustration with a background.

Unlike the two-dimensional composition,
we've seen in previous chapters,

if the characters and objects are

in a three-dimensional space,

there will be specific situations
and the characters will act accordingly.

In other words,
the story will develop within the painting.

As much as it's fun to draw illustrations with your own story,

it's also fun

to come up with

ideas, research,

and design your characters.

There'll be a lot more

to draw based on situations,

storylines, composition, colors, and thinking,

so it'll be a longer process than before.

That's why we need to plan
everything thoroughly before starting.

before drawing illustrations with the background.

First, we need to decide
on the themes and subject.

People often say they're inspired.

Sometimes, something flashes in my head

and I even sketch it.

But there's a lot of times when you don't know what to draw,

and you don't know what to do.

So I usually start with
deciding a specific time and place.

This is an illustration of the setting
of her daytime, warm sunlight

having a refreshing tea time in the dining room.

On the other hand,
this is an illustration of the middle of the night

in her bedroom way through a quiet purple night.

Sometimes you get inspiration
from the wider concept, the seasons.

This illustration has been started with the concept of Summer
and related to the subject of vacation.

And then with the specific set up of 'bathroom'

expressing the situation of enjoying a vacation.

Since I'm preparing for a lecture right now, it's December,

so I thought I'd paint something that feels like the end of the year.

So I've been thinking about the theme and location related to

December, Christmas and the end of the year.

I've been thinking about the living room
with the Christmas tree

and outdoor space
with the glittering Christmas lights.

Or I thought about a room full of presents.

However, it only leads to the typical Christmas image
that I had in mind,

and it didn't lead to the kind of material that I really wanted to paint.

So I decided to rethink

only leaving the Christmas-inspired colors of Red.

I'm going to focus on
my favorite red color and retro mood

from chapter 1.

We can enjoy drawing with the theme that we love

and even it would work efficiently with it.

That's why I chose a retro cake with strawberries

as the main material.

Once we had the material,
we searched for retro cakes

to gather images.

We also collected images

of retro kitchens and cafes.

Before I start drawing,

I usually Google

searches for images,

and if I can't find what I want in Korean,

I try searching for it in English

or in various languages by hand.

Once I've gathered enough material
and gotten the overall image in my head,

I start to make an idea sketch in the corner of your diary.

As you're organizing your thought

it is still okay half-heartedly so that only you can recognize it.

Think about the layout of the location,
the overall composition,

and draw various versions

while imagining the final drawing.

When I didn't have a diary to scribble on,

I also made notes on my phone.

Initially, I envisioned a little girl in a café with her cake

lined up beautifully,
or a little girl in the kitchen making a cake,

and I didn't come up with a sketch that I liked.

I wanted the cake to be big enough on the canvas,

and the character.

So I decided to draw a girl
who is making a huge cake

with a little fantasy

and fairy-tale elements.

I came up with an idea

and started with a rough sketch.

It was quite a long process.

To sum up briefly,

you need to establish a time,

a place, a subject,

and a specific situation.

And I did some research in the middle of the process
from time to time

and made overall image.

Sometimes, it's easy to come up with a theme,

but this time, it took several days to decide.

I turned back to the starting point

several times,

and whenever I had an idea, I'd write it down.

When I've organized my thought and
finally know where I have to go,

it feels like I was walking on a dark road

and the streetlights are shining on me.

Before opening a canvas

in order to draw,

you must organize your thoughts
and plan it.

The feeling of facing a blank canvas

with a plan What you will draw from now on,

and the feeling of facing a blank canvas

without any detailed plan

is very different.

In the next lesson, we'll use this subject
