In this chapter, we're going
to start with the basics of the figure.

Before that, let's remember that the character we'll be drawing

isn't a real person, but the deformed.

Instead of the actual structure and proportion of the human body,

we will reinterpret it somewhat.

That's why everyone draws differently,

and there's no right answer.

When you're drawing a character,

there's
sometimes pressure to draw the right body.

When you're under this kind of pressure,
not only do you lose the joy of drawing,

but you also lose the feeling that you're trying

to express through your drawing.

Instead of trying to draw the body right,

let's focus on expressing the character's personality.

In the first lesson,

Let's start with the face
which is the main part of the character drawing.

In the character drawing, the face determines
the feel of the overall illustration,

and the way you draw the face

becomes an essential standard in your drawing style.

First, we'll look at the most common proportions of the face,

and as we change them bit by bit,
we'll observe how the impression changes.

First, draw an upside-down egg-shaped face.

When you draw the face,

if you keep flipping left and right it,
you could draw it more symmetrically.

Let's divide the horizontal and vertical lines in half and draw the centerlines.

Draw the eyes at the horizontal line.

There's an eyebrow above the eyes.

The nose is about halfway
between the eyebrow and the jaw.

And there's the mouth between slightly upper the nose and jaw.

The position of the ears is as big as the eyebrow and the nose.

Let's draw the neck.

This is the general ratio of the face.

With this ratio, let's draw the half-side and side face

If you extend the lines,

you can easily draw it at the same rate.

Let's draw the upside-down egg-shaped face
in a little bit flat manner on one side.

Again, draw the centerline and mark
the location of the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Let's mark the ear too.

Now, let's draw the sides.

Let's draw one side completely flat

and the back of the head round.

Draw the eyes and nose in the proper position.

The tip of the nose should be about here.

I drew the three angles of the golden proportions,

known as the most common face ratio.

If you look up to this point, you won't be able to get the impression

because it looks like an egg ghost.

To get the impression,
let's polish it up a little.

Flipping it left and right,
draw a rough face shape.

Now, we're going to draw the eyes,
nose, and mouth.

We'll learn more about how to draw the eyes-nose mouth
in the next lesson more in details

but this time, we're going

to draw just a rough sketch to see the impressions.

In the third lesson,

we'll go into more detail on how to draw hair.

A full-face with the golden ratio is completed.

Now, let's draw the half-side face.

The eyebrow bone is stick out,

the eyelid is curved,

the cheekbone is stick out again, and the jaw goes inside.

Let's draw the eyes and nose and the mouth again.

You can also draw the nose bridge.

Let's draw the hair

and finish the side face

If you feel trouble with drawing the side face,

just mark the position

and practice how to draw it.

Draw a rough line around the part
that goes in and out.

you'll get three angles of the golden ratio.

This is the most basic ratio,

so it is suitable with any drawings

and could feel familiar and comfortable

I'm going to lower the nose and mouth to make the jaw shorter.

I'm going to move the nose and eyes along this line.

Now, let's make the eyes a little bigger.

The ears will go down too.

When you move the nose, eyes, and mouth down,

the forehead gets wider and

the middle part of the face gets shorter,

so it becomes a young-looking face,
commonly known as Baby Face.

To see a general impression,

let's draw on this.

The chin will be shorter than last time,

and the neck will look thinner than last time.

Let's draw the eyes and the pupils in big shapes.

When we draw the hair, it would be like this impression.

Compared to the full face we drew with a basic ratio,

it definitely looks younger.

Let's draw the rest of the face

Due to the shorter jaw and midsection,
the face line will be simpler.

Let's skip the nose bridge
along the simplified face line.

I'm done with the rest.

Now, let's draw the side face.

Because the eye is bigger,
the nose bridge below the eyebrow will be longer.

Let's draw the nose bridge and the lip line
more simply and gently.

We also drew the hair.

When we see the overall view of those three angels,
it would be like this

In order to see the difference,

if you compare it to the first proportion,

it will not only look young but also look more casual.

Lastly, let's draw with a much more dramatic ratio

Draw the eyes lower

and the nose and mouth lower, too.

Let's make the eyes bigger dynamically.

To see the impressions,
let's draw the things on this.

It makes the chin look like this.

The neck looks better if it's thinner too.

I'm going to exaggerate the eyes and make them really big and long.

I'm going to make the nose and the mouth simple and small.

If you draw rough hair,

the character will look like this.

It is far from the ratio of the real human,

giving her a cartoonish look.

The half-side face line will be even simpler.

I've drawn the eyes, nose, and mouth

according to the angle and the hair, too.

Lastly, let's draw the side face

I'll draw the nose bridge will be longer
along with the bigger eyes.

We could skip the lips pretty much.

Once you do that with the rest
of the face, it's done.

If you combine the three angles,
it looks like this.

The ratio of the face are completely exaggerated,

and it looks like a cute cartoon character.

Now, let's at thos three different angles separately,

you will see that it becomes a character

as he looks younger and younger.

While the eyes are exaggerated,

the curves of the face and the nose bridge will be more gradual and simple.

Have you completely figured
out the differences in the face ratio?

I usually draw teenage and 20-year-old girls,

and I want to draw realistic and cartoon-like characters,

so I mainly draw the characters with the second ratio.

When you draw for a long time, you get used to one ratio,

but you don't always have to draw in that.

The ratio of the face can be changed

depending on how you want to express them.

It would help if you also tried to draw the ratio

of the faces that match with the mood, you want to draw.
