All language subtitles for [BONUS] Understand Printing and CMYK Color Correction

Hello. My classmates.

This lesson is for those who have experience
making merchandise already

but were not happy with the final product
due to the final printing.

Please keep that in mind I won't teach

the basics of merchandise making.

It's really frustrating

when you work really hard on a piece of artwork
that you love

but the final printing was not

out the way you want it to.

So I'd like to share with you the most useful way

which is CMYK adjustments
that I've used throughout my making merchandise.

When we make merchandise,

we usually print an illustration
on a piece of paper or an object.

So we need to have a good understanding

of the basic principles of printing.

The basic concepts that you need to be aware of

are RGB and CMYK color modes.

RGB stands for the primary colors of the light

which are red, green and blue.

The computer or mobile device
that we're looking at right now

is shown with the light from a dark black screen

that we're seeing.

So the images that are normally seen on the web are

usually created in an RGB mode which is a mixture of light.

On the other hand, there's a state sign that says

that a lot of printing shops require
that it should be converted into CMYK.

CMYK refers to the four colors of printing ink,

CYAN, MAGENTA YELLOW, BLACK.

It would be great to use ink that
matches the color you want

to print, but then a whole bunch of ink is needed.

So by combining these four ink layers,

we'll be able to print the color closest to the color we need.

GREEN can be made by mixing CYAN and YELLOW,

RED can be made by mixing YELLOW and MAGENTA.

If MAGENTA and CYAN mixed, it would be dark blue or purple,

something like that.

And because we're printing ink on white paper,

the bigger this CMYK value gets the darker the color gets

and the more colors it has the closer it gets to black.

So we really need to understand
the characteristics of this color mode

and come up with a printout.

So, what I'm going to do is convert an illustration
made with RGB mode into CMYK mode.

Because the SAI tool only supports RGB mode,

I'm going to work in Photoshop
and convert it over to CMYK.

Click mage from the top menu,

and convert the image mode
by clicking Mode and CMYK.

Then the overall color will turn dull.

If we compare it to before converting,

it became overall dull, including the red color.

Because there is a limited range of colors

that can be used with CMYK

so it will be changed like this.

The biggest changes are

vivid colors, deep blue, and purple.

This is what you can get
by converting it into CMYK.

So it's best not

to use vivid colors or purple colors
for printing.

Instead of using dangerous colors at the beginning,

if you use the proper colors

we can convert the image without changing the saturation.

Comparing it to the previous ones,
it didn't change much.

These drawings are quite satisfying
even when they're printed.

When you're thinking

about making merchandise,

you should make sure to take this into account before you draw.

But when we're drawing, there are times

when we need to use dangerous colors as well.

Even if it's not dangerous colors to be changed

I will let you know the color correction

that we can print with clear and bright colors.

I'm gonna show you an example of
how I adjust an illustration for making a sticker.

It is an illustration using purple and fluorescent colors

which are vulnerable to being changed
when it's converted into CMYK.

Once I convert this into CMYK,

it gets really dull.

Compared to before,
the colors are quite different.

It'll be difficult to do it in the same color format,

but to make sure it's not dull,

we'll use the color replacement function
to change the colors one by one.

select Adjustment and Color Replacement.

The Color Replacement is the function
to convert the color

from a square at the top to
another color at the bottom.

First, let's change the yellow color.

Select the yellow that you want to change

by clicking the color box at the top.

Click okay,

and if you tap the result box at the bottom

and press the yellow again,

you will find the value of each CMYK ink.

The maximum value for each color is 100.

As the numbers get bigger the darker color

and as the more colors and closer to black.

The yellow which has been selected is Yellow 61 and

it's got a few other colors in it.

If you print it out like this, it will be printed mixed

with as much as 5 of CYAN and 6 of MAGENTA.

So it will be dull yellow that much.

Like I said in chapter four,

the yellow color will look dull
even if it's a little less saturated,

so if you want to use a completely yellow color,

I recommend you to use zero
for the other values.

I'm going to give the other values zero,

and it's going to be a much more vibrant color
than the last one.

Click okay.

Even if you compare them,

you can see that the yellow color
has changed to vivid color.

Let's continue to change the colors one by one.

Now, we're going to change the light pink color.

If you select Light pink,

the value is 55 for MAGENTA and 11 for CYAN.

If you change the CYAN to zero,
the pink became more clear than before

but it is still too light due to its low value.

So I'm going raise the value of MAGENTA

so that the color can be

I've tried 70 value

and 80 value, too.

Sometimes, the color of the preview is slightly different

from the color shown in the palette.

When that happens, you can change the color

based on what you see in the preview.

Click okay and convert it and then check the color again.

you will find the CMYAN value that is not

the CMYAN number that we specified earlier.

Depending on the color,

sometimes you can't get the color you want at once.

In this case, we have to do it once again.

If we do it again,
it'll be closer to the color we want.

This time, I'm going to work on dark pink color.

Same as before, select the color and
change the value of CYAN to zero.

and I'm going to raise
the value of MAGENTA to about 90.

But it will also change to the light pink area

that we converted earlier.

In this case, reduce the tolerance here.

If the tolerance decreases,
only the colors that are closer to the dark pink,

we originally selected will change.

This time, it didn't change perfectly
to the color we wanted.

If you keep replacing the colors and it doesn't change,

then click spoiler and enter the CMYK value
by yourself.

And then use the paint tool
to fill in the areas we want

and make it even clearer.

Now, let's change the most important shade of purple.

The yellow and pink that we converted earlier
only used one color of ink.

Purple is the color mixed with

MAGENTA and CYAN.

Usually, there's a CMYK color chart that looks like this
at a printing shop

so it's really easy to see
how much of these two colors need to be mixed together

to get the right tone of purple that you want.

You can also go online
and look at the CMYK color chart.

I'm going to share the link in the classnote.

You can easily go through the pages and see
what the results are

based on the different colors mixed together.

So I'm just going to look for the closest purple that I want.

I like this purple, here.

If you look at the chart

its vlaue is MAGENTA 55 and 35 CYAN.

Remember this value and come back to Photoshop

and click spoiler and enter the value,
CYAN 35 and MAGENTA 55.

Then I used the paint tool to fill in the areas
that I want to change the color.

This is how it looks when it's compare
the final work

to the actual print.

In general, it's very similar
to the final illustration.

Even if we print the same file,
the colors are subtly different in each printing shop.

Sometimes it's a little bit reddish

and sometimes it's a little bit blue.

So my recommendation is to know the characteristics

of each print shop and to one place.

Even if you work in one place,

the results may vary
depending on the printer's condition.

If you need to make important printing products

or mass-produce them,

make a sample beforehand and
adjust it before you print them.

This time, I've shared certain adjustments
that I often use,

for those of you who have made merchandise

But if you haven't made merchandise yet,

I recommend you to try it.

The real pleasure of making merchandise

and using it

is different from drawing.

I started making small merchandise for my own satisfaction,

but then I started making merchandise

and entering the fair regularly

and even making my own brand.
