(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
(DRAMATIC MUSIC RISES)
(IN NATivE LANGUAGE) Ave.
Tell me a story.
Not now, Heron.
Please.
I'm not your mother.
Tell my son a story.
I can tell you about where we're going?
Your father's going to find us food and shelter.
There will be herds of animals
to hunt, warm caves to live in.
ODAL: Heron's a boy.
He needs to hear about conflict. Struggle.
What do you know about struggle?
ODAL: Heron
would you like to hear my story?
It begins with a people that moved with the seasons.
In summer they arrived at their hunting grounds
but the herds did not.
Facing starvation, they decided to return south
but a headstrong young man had other ideas.
He wanted to head west
to a land of his childhood stories.
There would be a test to reach this land.
Ajourney across a great sea.
But the reward would be bounty unknown.
A place teeming with animals to hunt.
With fertile valleys
and immense mountains filled with warm caves.
(SOFT MUSIC PLAYING)
The elders laughed at the idea.
So our hero
his heir
his mate
- (BLOWS AIR) - his younger brother
a brave advisor
and a stray
took to the sea.
They battled waves as high as mountains.
The storm stole their provisions.
Butjust as all hope was gone
the sea calmed
and the promised land appeared.
(SOFT MUSIC CONTINUES)
(YELLS)
ODAL: Our hero had delivered their salvation.
A place where their children would flourish
(BREATHING HEAvlLY)
and the elders could find peace.
Their own paradise.
GEIRR: Beyah!
- (BEYAH EXCLAIMING HAPPILY) - We made it!
(ALL LAUGHING)
HERON: You're squashing me!
(LAUGHING ECHOES)
But it was cursed.
The earth was barren.
(WIND HOWLING)
Exposed to incessant wind...
Careful, Odal.
ODAL: You haven't found us food or shelter, Adem.
And you don't know what's out there.
Whatever's out there, I can handle it.
HERON: What is out there, Odal?
Cold.
Starvation.
Demons more powerful than your father.
Evil, bloodthirsty things.
This isn't the happy place of his childhood stories.
This land is old
and dark.
Then I am the light.
(ODAL CHUCKLES)
The danger in bringing light to a dark place
is that you might find out what lives in the darkness.
(LEAvES RUSTLING)
(SCREAMS)
(LAUGHING)
ADEM: Enough!
There are no demons.
Ifwe'd stayed where we were
you'd all be dead.
But here, you have a chance.
Because of me.
(RUSTLING)
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
GEIRR: Don't eat that.
BEYAH: I'm so hungry.
I know.
Maybe we'll have to eat Odal.
(BOTH LAUGHING)
HERON: Kill it! Kill it!
Kill it!
Kill it!
GEIRR: Don't worry about him.
BEYAH: I'm not. He'll eat first.
Strays eat last.
You're not a stray anymore.
You're with us
and I'll look after you.
(HERON GRUNTING)
Heron!
We're setting out.
You'll see.
(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
Is that where we're going?
GEIRR: Yes, Heron.
The foothills will be full of caves.
ADEM: In three days
we'll be safe and warm in a new home
and all ofthis will belong to us.
I promise you.
Let's go.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
(WHISTLES)
(SNIFFS)
(WATER TRICKLING)
(SLOW SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYING)
(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
GEIRR: Did it fall over the edge?
ADEM: It was forced.
There's nothing left of it.
Don't tell the others.
Why?
It means there's prey.
Because I don't know what did this.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
We need to get back to them.
(STONES CLACKING)
We're too exposed.
Adem, we're too exposed.
- It's a good vantage point. - (ODAL SCOFFS)
For what?
There's fuck all here.
This is why the elders wouldn't take you south.
I took pity on you.
You need me.
Do I?
Ave is as good at foraging as you.
And ifAve dies?
That's why I'm here, isn't it?
You don't do anything out of pity.
This is a good thing for you.
(BREATHING HEAvlLY)
If my baby is a boy, I won't worry.
But if it's a girl
she'll have to earn her place.
(CONTINUES BREATHING HEAvlLY)
You're important to him now.
I'm just trying to let you know
you have a purpose now.
Purpose?
It's a good thing.
It's a good thing.
(SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS)
(TWIG SNAPS)
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
(LAUGHING)
(WIND HOWLING)
(BREATHING HEAvlLY)

(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
(TWIGS SNAPPING)
HERON: Got you!
Are you stupid?
Don't wander off!
Do you understand? Do you understand?
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
(BREATHING HEAvlLY)
GEIRR: Ave.
Geirr.
They can rest, we hunt.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
ADEM: We'll go around.
Are you sure?
I'm not taking them through a forest.
We stay in the open.
But that will add days.
We'll go around.
Won't it be too hard for the others?
They'll be fine once they've eaten. Come on.
- (BIRDS CHIRPING) - (LEAvES RUSTLING)
(AvE CRYING)
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
(AvE CONTINUES CRYING)
ODAL: She must eat, Adem.
(ODAL PRAYING)
Kill it! Kill it!
(SOBBING)
HERON: Kill it! Kill it!
Stop!
ADEM: Keep watch.
(RUSTLING)
- (DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS) - (BEYAH GASPS)
My girl
don't stray too far from the fire.
(FIRE CRACKLING)
It's getting cold.
We've got no food.
ADEM: Ave is so tired.
My baby may not survive this journey.
I can accept that because I have Heron.
And you.
(BEYAH WHIMPERS)
You're for whatever I need.
(LEAvES CRUNCHING)
(CREATURE SCREECHING)
GEIRR: What was that?
What was that?

AvE: Heron!
- What took him? - GEIRR: Come back!
AvE: Can you hear me?
What did you see?
(AvE SHOUTS IN NATivE LANGUAGE)
You can't track him now!
Wait until light.
He's my son.
AvE: No!
GEIRR: Adem, stop!
You watch them.
GEIRR: We can't split up!
(AvE CONTINUES SHOUTING)
I can't do this on my own!
(BOTH GRUNTING)
If something happens to you!
Think about Ave!
(ADEM YELLING)
Your baby will die!
(SCREAMS)
We'll all die.
(ADEM SCREAMS)
It's time.
Beyah.
I'm not going with him.
We have no choice.
(OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING)
(PANTING)
(SNIFFS)
What is it?
I don't know. But it's not blood.
Heron's alive.
(OMINOUS MUSIC CONTINUES)

Adem
we can't.
ADEM: He's in there.
(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
GEIRR: Adem!
Think!
Adem!
Adem!
It's getting dark.
What if he's already dead?
Then it's your fault!
I told you to keep watch.
Keep moving.
I need rest.
Stay with her.
No! She's on heat.
That's what brought it to us.
Then keep up.
He's going to get us all killed.
I'm sorry.

We've got something to eat now.
No.
It's what he'd want.
It's for his child.

It's a demon!
Are you insane?
He's right.
It's a monster.
So we have to offer it something.
GEIRR: No.
We have to hunt it down.
BEYAH: Geirr, you can't hunt this thing.
Adem tried
and now he's gone.
We need shelter.
(FLIES BUzzlNG)
ODAL: Move.
To die somewhere else?
You can't escape a demon.
I want to leave.
I'll lead us to the mountains and we'll find a home.

When did it first appear?
When you started to bleed.
It can smell you.

(SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)
HERON: Beyah, tell me a story.
It began with a stray
looking for a home.
She journeyed into a land of monsters.
Corrupted by fear and rage...
she killed the monsters and took their cave.
Only then did she see how they had lived.
BEYAH: Ave?
HERON: They brought her here to honour her
and her baby.
How they had stolen a boy
because they wanted to save him.
How they had cared for others.
She saw how they had been threatened and afraid.
She saw they were people just like her.
The stray realised she had found a home
and she had destroyed it.
(SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC CONTINUES)
(HERON CRYING)
In time the stray and the boy learned to survive.
The first of a new people.
HERON: What do we do now?
We try again.
