Back on Music Center tonight, visiting with the killer,

Jerry Lee Lewis.

You had all these big rock hits,

and all of a sudden in the late '60s,

you've had these big country music hits.

Do you think your fans expected the natural transition into country music?

I'm country.

Mmm-hmm. - I was born country.

Yeah. - But I was raised on rock and roll.

Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino.

Especially Little Richard. Now, they rate right along there with Elvis.

The first time I ever heard Elvis on radio, me and my daddy was driving along.

I heard him doing a song called Blue Moon of Kentucky.

I said, "I don't know who that is," I said,

"but the door has finally been opened."

And me and my daddy was out in a field.

We were were pulling corn, you know.

And I said, "Dad, I think I'm going to Memphis."

I was 20 years old then.

I said, I read about this boy

called Elvis Presley, who's really something else.

And Sam Phillips got him started.

I think he could get me started.

And we drove down from from Ferriday, Louisiana,

into Memphis here

and pulled up in front of Sun Records here.

I said, "Well, you're going to have to cut a little demo for me,

for Mr. Phillips to listen to."

So he put it down and I said, I'm going to do

"Crazy Arm," kind of a rhythm and blues style, the way I do it.

And I just kicked it off, and here's the way I did it.

That's all. That's it.

You said that when Sam

first heard the tape of, um, "Crazy Arms,"

by the time you got through the intro, he was sold on it.

He was. Sam... Sam Phillips' a genius on that.

He... a remarkable man.

He... he knew... he knew what was happening.

He knew just... just like that when nobody else did.

Jud Phillips, Sam's brother, took me up to New York City.

Auditioned me for Steve Allen, and, uh...

He heard me do the audition for him in his office.

He said, "You've got three minutes."

I said, "That's all I need."

Right now, it's going to be one of the hottest

cotton pickin' numbers in the country in about three weeks

How did you feel about "Great Balls of Fire?"

It was number one on the R&B charts,

the pop charts, the country and western charts.

Well, I thought it was fantastic.

I never thought that much about it at the time.

Now I do. I am the only one in the business that had two records do that.

"Whole Lotta Shakin'" and "Great Balls of Fire."

- Two in a row that... - They were number one on every chart,

from Easy Listening charts

to rock and roll to rhythm and blues

to gut bucket blues to, uh, the country charts,

uh, the pop chart... any charts they had,

the record was number one.

- I thought, "Here we go."

Oh, he just became a father.

He adopted his wife.

They made a big deal out of it, which I could have cared less.

And I didn't get mad at the press.

I got mad at nobody. I mean, I knew what I was doing.

And they said, "Well, you'll never... never be back again.

"You'll never be a big star again."

We had to work every date we could get

just to make ends meet.

Times were hard, but Jerry never faltered.

He wasn't discouraged.

He went from making like $10,000 a night

to $200 a night, and he said,

"Oh, okay! So I'm making $200 a night,"

and he just kept right on working.

No regrets or a whole lot of regrets?

No regrets on my part, baby.

There are times in every entertainer's life

when changes seem to be in order.

Our next presenter was a major star

in the early days of the rock and roll craze.

His flamboyant style carried him to the top of the pop music charts.

Then he made a change in style and presentation,

even in physical appearance, and he has risen to stardom

in the country music field.

The style may have changed but the real talent remains.

And there's still a whole lotta shakin' goin' on for Jerry Lee Lewis!

- nine zillion songs. Yeah.

I've had 14 number one hit records in the last three years,

- uh, in the country western field of music in the States. - Is it?

- And, of course, now I can go back to 1956. - Mmm.

"You Won again," "Breathless," "High School Confidential."

And... there's several records on the back.

Because I really don't think there's anybody qualified.

I've been my own man. I've done my own thing.

Uh, they've called me this. They've called me that.

And they've said this about me.

I knew I have enough confidence in myself

that I really wasn't worried about anybody following me.

What'd your dad do for a living? What kind of a man was he?

He was a... he was a farmer, a great man.

And, uh, my mother was a great lady

and I had the greatest parents in the world.

They bought me a piano when I was eight years old.

They mortgaged the home to buy me a piano.

It was the greatest sounding piano I ever heard in my life.

And I... I would imagine any piano would have sounded

that good to me at the time, and I lived with that piano.

Uh, I sat on a piano stool five, six, seven hours a day.

Day in and day out.

I loved it and my mother walked by and was listening

and she told my dad, she said,

"Elmo, he... he's going to be a natural-born pianist."

And he... And Dad said, "Yeah, he might be a piano player."

And so, unless there is a difference between a pianist

and a piano player, I don't know.

We're still working on that one.

To go back to my childhood,

well, all the families, like my cousin Mickey,

Jimmy, a whole flock of cousins,

we all played piano and sang and...

but I'm the one that had the piano.

Eventually, they all got a piano.

But they... they never did quite get it.

Mickey, Jerry Lee just told on you,

said that you have been stealing his music

since you were three years old.

No, I didn't say that!

We're going to put the cousins together.

Let's relive the old days in Ferriday, Louisiana.

Mickey's mother, uh, told me,

she said, "Mickey wants a piano."

She said, "Will you teach him how to play it if I get him one?"

I was just beginning to play, myself.

Between Jimmy, Mickey and yourself,

there's not a lot of age difference, is it?

It was just like a few months or something?

- About nine to ten, twelve months. - Is that right?

We all would play and Jimmy was playing

- and we were all playing, you know. - Did you guys have lessons?

- or was this just in you? - No, we just taught ourselves to play.

- You taught yourselves... - Well, actually, it was very easy

for me to pick up because he was already playing.

So every time that Jerry would do something I could watch him.

Who was the most attractive to the girls?

Was it Mickey, or you, Jerry Lee? Or was it Jimmy?

- Had to be Jerry.

He... he got... He got all the girls.

Oh, he did? - Really?

- Played the piano. - Well, I got them at first

and Mickey stole them.

Oh, I see.

He was kind of waiting in the wings.

Yeah. Oh, Jimmy didn't have a chance.

Aunt Minnie bursts in that it's not a Christian song.

I said, "No, but it's a good boogie woogie song."

We've always been close with family

and Mickey is my first cousin. Jimmy is my first cousin.

I had to be. You had a lot of competition, to fight.

You know, Elvis Presley up there, jumping all over the place.

Little Richard jumping all over pianos and everything.

So I needed to do something. So I just kicked my piano stool back.

I think I was caught up in music when I was born.

I heard music in church.

I heard music on street corners.

Um, I heard these people

struttin' around Ferriday, Louisiana,

on, uh, street corners, just picking the blues

on little guitars, you know.

Uh, they were colored people

and they were... laying something down I liked.

I don't... I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was good.

And I had to get involved with it. I knew that.

Ain't as big a house. It was a pretty large place.

It was right on Main Street of Ferriday,

going out through color town.

And they always came in on those big buses, you know?

And I could tell when one was coming into town,

and he would have a... a big name,

and he had all the... the great blues singers that come through there,

one more at a time or another, you know, and I... I never missed one of them.

I could sneak in there through a window or something.

Mr. Haney himself was a big colored man.

He was a great big man, bigger as a door.

And he could just pick you up, and throw you like a football if he wanted to, you know,

He caught me in there a few times and put me out.

He said, "Boy, if your uncle Lee Calhoun caught you in here,

your mama or daddy caught you, they'd kill me.

And I'd sneak back in again.

And that's where the rhythm and blues

and the gut bucket blues and the dancing

and the rock and roll came, and that's where it come from.

And I knew that's where it was coming from.

Well, that was my side of the fence,

and it was either Haney's big house or at my house.

Next up from our affiliate WSM TV in Nashville, Tennessee,

Mr. Jerry Lee Lewis, who in June of this year was rushed to a Memphis hospital

with a ruptured stomach, he had two emergency operations,

and doctors gave him a slim chance of survival.

He remained in intensive care for over two months,

- and now he says The Killer is back. ...Almost died.

- He is here tonight... - He was rushed to this hospital

late one night with a perforated stomach.

They still don't know what caused that.

We started getting hit records.

Or not necessarily the hit records,

but once we built up a good circuit, was making good money.

That's when Jerry started drinking again.

For the next several days, it didn't appear Jerry Lee Lewis would live.

Two difficult operations. Two months in intensive care.

Jerry Lee, you look fine, but you appear to have lost

some weight from the last time we met.

Has that been one of the... the results of this whole thing?

Yes, Tom, I would imagine about 40 pounds.

I guess I took enough pills for the whole town.

Drank enough whiskey to lift any ship off the ground.

I used to drink a fifth of tequila to sober up on.

I drank two and three fifths of whiskey a day

and a fifth of tequila to sober up and do my show.

But what'd the doc say to you, Jerry?

I'm assuming that he discussed the surgery with you before the fact.

Did he go through the... What's that in your hand there? A cigar?

and I'd done it pretty close to the exact way he'd done it.
