This is Gump. Do you still remember me?
It's been many days since you last heard from me, I know.
But I've been happy.
With Freddie.
And as long as a dog is happy, he doesn't need anything else.
Just like a person.
We've been through so much lately that if I were to tell you everything,
you wouldn't even enjoy it anymore. We live for each other, and we travel
in that big tin box with squeaking wheels to all sorts of places.
Yeah, this is the land of my childhood. I was born here.
This is where I first kissed a girl.
I'm probably an old fool, aren't I?
I haven't invited any woman to these parts ever since.
And now I'm coming here with you.
Well, this is my home.
I was born in this house. And my mother
used to move me around in a cart like this.
But you had a similar cart as well, didn't you?
When you were a puppy, remember?
I do remember, of course. It was my home back then.
That rusty cart full of Freddie's stuff was my whole world.
And over there on that hill,
that's where I first kissed a girl.
I'm serious.
Come on, let's climb up there, alright?
Come on, let's go.
Well, I haven't been here for fifty years or so,
which is several dog's lives.
When one finds out that you're actually
the best beings one's ever known, you must leave.
And that's not fair.
Gumpy. Gump!
Come here. Come here!
That's so unfair to you.
Do you understand me?
But on the other hand, if you were really long-lived,
well, you would be just too perfect, wouldn't you?
Come on, let's go.
Yeah!
Come here.
Well, I don't know.
All that climbing might have a bit too much for us, huh?
Right, my boy?
But it was worth it. Look how beautiful it is here.
For the sake of the first kiss, come on!
Every time Freddie had problems getting out of bed,
I started thinking about how I could help him.
Could I possibly pull him out using my lead,
just like I did on that hill?
I'll be alright soon, dear boy.
Don't worry.
But I was worried.
Go.
Go.
Good morning.
Hello, Father.
Freddie, I haven't seen you for a long time.
Neither outside nor at church. Are you alright?
- How are you? - Well...
I'm worried about you.
Come on in.
The landlord from the church visited us the other day.
I called him Cross because he was wearing a big one around his neck.
It was not a tight collar but a loose one
from which he could free himself anytime he wished to.
- Are you running a fever? - No.
Have you seen a doctor recently?
- You have to go to hospital. - Don't talk like that in front of the boy.
He's worried sick about me. Come on in.
After you.
You stay here.
Stay.
I'm not going to hospital.
You have to, they'll help you there.
Every time I see a doctor, I just suffer, you see?
I'll get over it, believe me. I trust you, so you trust me.
You should trust doctors. And our Lord, too.
- Goodbye. - Goodbye, Father.
- Bye, Freddie. - Goodbye.
- You know what to do. - Come on, boy, come on in.
There you have it, I have to go to hospital.
I'm like an old car
that needs to be oiled every now and then,
and a few parts need to be replaced, you see?
It'll only be for a little while.
You can count on that.
I promise.
We still have a lot of work to do.
I was looking into Freddie's wet eyes
and believed every single word he said.
I'll wait here for Freddie and all his replaced parts.
I don't even mind waiting forever.
Don't worry about anything, you'll be fine.
I recognized him from a distance,
that hairy face of his with eyes behind small windows.
- It was Nut. - Hey! Hello!
Hello there!
Hello!
So you found me here, at the very end of the world!
Welcome, hello.
- Coffee? - Yeah, thank you.
Alright.
You've got a nice place here. Beautiful.
Right?
People find it strange that I live here alone like this,
but I have a feeling it's actually them who are alone,
back in the city.
There's something to it.
Look, I've brought a few important things.
- This is his food. - Aha.
- And his favourite shoe. - I see.
And this T-shirt.
- That's my old shirt, you see? - But what about it?
- Well, just put it in his bed. - Okay.
So that he feels I'm still here with him.
Alright.
And then I realized that the two of them had made some arrangements beforehand.
They agreed that I'd be staying with Nut while Freddie was being fixed.
I'm leaving you with the most precious thing I have.
I wanted to run after him, but I knew I wasn't allowed to do it.
I could see his little head swaying amongst the trees
until he was completely out of my sight.
So we're back together again, aren't we?
Is this your job? Gump!
Well, I have a lot to look forward to, then.
Alright.
But we'll have more fun here.
I promise.
I'll give you something to eat now.
Here, have something...
from this can.
I promised him you'd be a strong fellow when he got back.
Don't worry, he'll be back.
Of course he will.
Nut was full of jokes, but one could see
he really wanted to make sure I liked it at his place.
Don't be sad.
I can't let you go, you would run away.
I promised to look after you. Just for a while.
Well, I hope so, just for a little while.
I have a surprise for you.
Tomorrow morning we're going for a run and I'll introduce you to someone.
You'll be surprised.
Okay, okay, okay.
When it was dark, Nut wanted me to sleep next to him.
But I needed something special to remind me of Freddie.
- Here. - And you surely know what it was.
- Hop! - Yes, that piece of cloth.
Freddie's old T-shirt that he loved so much.
You should sleep now.
So I stuck my nose in Freddie's T-shirt
and suddenly felt as if he was there with me.
The sense of smell is my smartest partner.
Except for the teeth, a dog's greatest strength is in the muzzle.
Our sense of smell is always with us.
Old dogs usually lose hearing and sight,
but the sense of smell stays with us until our last breath.
Let's go.
Come on!
We don't have all day. Move it!
Keep running!
Oh, come on! Everyone knows that dogs have to poop first thing in the morning.
I couldn't even look for that magical place of mine,
because Nut kept bouncing impatiently like my rubber toy ball.
Well?
Come on, let's go!
Try a little harder, I'm fit already! Come on!
That fool must have really thought he could outrun me.
- Don't overdo it, though! - But I didn't want to discourage him,
so I was just gently trotting along.
It's easy for you when you have four legs!
Let me tell you something, buddy. I'm letting you win, you see?
I don't want to exhaust you on your first day, do I?
You'll soon see what a partner I have!
Julian!
It was a little tassel-headed lunatic
who didn't want to talk to me much at first.
But then he told me his story.
He went with his people on a trip the other day,
and their car ended up in a ravine by the side of the road.
The first one to come out of it was Julian.
- But he could only feel his front legs. - Come on!
All the strength in the back legs had been left behind in the ditch.
He crawled back to the road and saved his people's lives.
Okay.
It took him a while before he learned how to use his cart.
But after that he didn't miss his back legs at all anymore.
But his master kept feeling sorry for him saying:
"Julian, my hero, my poor boy!"
But Julian didn't feel like a poor cripple.
That's what only you people do.
When a dog has a leg or any other part of the body missing,
we're such poor things to you all of a sudden.
Okay.
Come on, turn around.
No watching!
He was probably ashamed to be naked in front of me.
When he came out of the water,
he hid behind a tree so I wouldn't see him.
But the tree didn't cover him completely.
So I did see a piece of his butt.
HOSPITAL
Jesus! I'm coming.
You're rushing me!
Go, go, go...
What's the meaning of this, lady? You can't bring that dog in here!
Are you out of your mind? This is not a shelter! Go!
- Hello. - Hello. Where are you going, Father?
- To see a friend. - Well, okay.
Hello.
Ferdinand, Ferdinand...
Don't say anything, I know everything already.
But can I do anything else for you?
Well, I've seen it all.
But I'd be really happy if I could see my boy just one last time.
I made him a promise, you see?
Okay, courage.
Father,
try to bring my boy here.
What is it again?
Gump!
Gumpy! You rascal, come here!
Good morning!
- The wind's so strong today. - Good morning.
- Good morning. - What brings you here, Father?
Is it that bad?
You know what? Take a seat, I'll get the coffee.
Gump! Come home!
Get in.
I'll be right back.
Here it is.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
Go ahead.
I visit Freddie almost every day.
I see.
And that body of his no longer
has the strength to keep on fighting.
The only thing that's keeping him alive are the thoughts of Gump.
And the last time I was there
I promised him
I'd take Gump to see him.
- Then we'll go together. - Well...
There's a problem. There's a really nasty woman
working at the gatehouse. Not even a mouse would sneak through.
We'll figure something out.
Alright, buddy.
Move your head.
Fine.
Good. What do you think?
And I'll cover you like this.
You have to try a bit harder. Give me a hug or something.
Get in there and hide.
Is that all you can do?
Let me cover you.
We can easily march in there like this.
But you need to hide your head.
I think we'll be fine. What do you think?
Nut kept whistling all along as if everything was totally fine.
But he wasn't a very good actor. I knew that underneath that song
he had the same fear on his tongue like I did.
And now hide your head. I don't want to see you, understand?
Good.
Stop fidgeting about!
- Shall I raise the bar gate? - No, I'm good.
Okay.
Bloody hell!
Where are you going with that dog?
Stop!
He can't go in there!
Come back!
Stop!
Wait!
- Well... - The priest said it was room 22.
Run, boy! Run! Yes!
So you have come,
my darling boy.
Wait!
Fire!
Fire! Call the fire department!
I felt incredibly happy.
We were sitting on his bed in that fake rain
holding each other.
I'm not going to say anything more about it.
It was just between me and Freddie.
We have met here
to say goodbye
to a decent, good fellow,
a musician in body and soul,
but most of all, our dear friend,
Freddie.
Last time I saw him,
his heart was filled with love.
He loved the world, he loved freedom.
He loved nature.
He would often fall asleep under the stars...
But above all, he loved his Gump.
The kind of love he couldn't find in people,
he found in his "boy,"
as he used to call him.
Freddie,
rest in eternal peace.
And may you be well up there.
- Amen. - Amen.
Only one person didn't come to me.
It was her.
The woman who hurt both me and Freddie the most.
The first thing I felt when I met her was fear.
And then, immediately, great anger.
But later, all of a sudden, all the anger within me started to disappear.
When I saw her closer, she wasn't the Dasha I remembered.
This Dasha barely made it to the brown box
and her eyes were as red as a traffic light.
All the fear and anger had completely vanished from my head.
I forgave her.
Freddie would have wanted it that way. Wouldn't he?
Well, in fact,
it was me who wanted it that way.
The stars were very low that night.
I had a feeling that if I jumped up with all my might,
I could probably reach them.
I was looking into that black light
when one of the stars suddenly flashed at me.
And I knew at once what the sky told me that night.
There's a few of Freddie's things left here.
- Aha. - Come and have a look.
Maybe you'll find something you want.
Well, I'll leave you here for a moment.
Thank you.
I started inhaling all those memories.
All those moments that I experienced here with Freddie.
And all those things that reminded me of those moments.
The rickety bed we slept in,
and his armchair that he liked sitting in with me looking at him the whole time.
I wanted to be there,
be there with those memories in the place where I felt so good.
Wait.
What?
Are you speaking?
Wait.
At that moment when he looked me in the eye,
our eyes said something that had never been said before.
Want to tell me about it?
That's insane.
I told him how Freddie saved me from the bin,
about my sister, about the housing estate with cars without wheels
and about the people who lived there.
Hang on.
Alright.
Good.
Wait!
A bit slower.
I can't believe this.
AND THEN ONE DAY...
That was something, yesterday.
Yeah. It felt like I was
experiencing it all with you.
You'll tell me more stories tonight, yeah?
I'm probably the only person
who understands animal speech. Aren't I?
Well, Nut was showing off a bit. But he was just confused.
Animals can be understood by anyone who wants to understand them.
Anyone who opens their heart to them.
That's all for you. Is that okay?
I think so. So carry on. Tell me.
That fool probably thought that the more he rolls his eyes at me,
the better I'll be able to tell my story.
It was so lovely yesterday. I want to know how it turned out.
Gump.
I know. Wait.
You need to breathe in the atmosphere, don't you?
Have a sniff.
Yeah. Just sniff.
Good. Okay. Let's go.
But you can't just get memories out of your head on someone's command.
So I was just sitting there and Nut didn't understand me at all.
Hang on.
It's linked with the place where you lived with Freddie, isn't it?
Fine.
Okay.
So let's leave that for today, and we'll continue tomorrow.
Yeah.
I can't wait!
Come here!
Hello, Father.
- Hello. - Hello.
- Going to work? - Well, God will not wait.
And what are you doing here?
We have come to ask you for something.
The last time we were here with Gump,
we had a great night's sleep here at the vicarage.
So we thought that maybe we could repeat it.
Of course! Here, I'll give you the keys.
Here. Sorry, that one's for the church.
You wouldn't get into the vicarage with that one.
- Here's the key to the vicarage. - Great.
That must have been so beautiful when you counted the stars.
Wait.
You mean the old bag at the funeral? That was Freddie's girlfriend?
And you've had the scarf since then, yeah? I see.
So now we're getting to know each other.
It was difficult with me, wasn't it? And you taught me a lot, too.
And if it wasn't for you, I'd still be in that glass cage to this day. Really.
Well, now I felt a bit important.
And for a moment, instead of those eyes that were writing,
I made the proverbial "dog ones."
You probably know what kind of eyes I mean.
Hello. What's going on in here?
I'm sorry about the mess here.
I suppose I should confess something.
I didn't want to tell you yesterday,
because I was afraid you'd think that I'm crazy, but...
You know, the first time I spent the night with Gump here,
something peculiar happened between us.
He just started telling me
his whole life story.
Since when he was a puppy and how he met Freddie,
and what Freddie meant to him.
And he talked and talked... And all of it on this armchair here.
It didn't work anywhere else. That's why I came back yesterday,
so that I could listen to the whole story and write it down.
And could I read a bit of that story?
- No, no, I'd be embarrassed. - No, it'll stay between us.
Like at confession.
But...
- Don't be angry. - And what's more, it's Gump's story.
And Gump, as I know him,
he'd definitely let me read it.
- Well... - Yes!
- I'll be embarrassed. - No, don't be embarrassed.
- It starts on page one. - I'll have to reorganize it a bit.
Okay, Gump, come on.
I'm so nervous about it.
Actually, I've no idea why I'm so nervous now.
But it doesn't matter.
How long do you think it'll take him?
I could hear his heart from where I was.
- Okay. - It was beating like crazy.
Never mind. I wrote it with my heart, didn't I?
According to what you dictated to me.
I can't wait anymore.
Come on! Let's go.
I can't bear it anymore.
Gump, where are you going?
Come back, don't leave it all up to me!
Well, thank you very much!
I need some moral support, come along.
So?
So?
You shouldn't have done that to me.
I see. I told you shouldn't read it. Give it back to me.
No, no, no. Sit down. Sit down.
- It's so moving. - Seriously?
From page 26 onwards I just cried and cried.
Really?
I think that this story can't just stay on these sheets of paper.
- Aha. - You have to make it into a book.
But...
If you allow me, I've got a friend who publishes books.
I can phone him tomorrow.
Do you think so?
This is an absolute treat.
Have some.
Yeah, and tomorrow I have to go and buy a jacket.
I don't have a single jackets.
They might think I'm some kind of backwoodsman at that publisher's.
Alright.
I'll tell you something, my friend.
After this I've got a really great...
You'll see for yourself.
Okay. Have a sniff.
Delicious, isn't it?
But for a hungry stomach, a load like this, well...
When I got into bed and Nut fell asleep,
my belly spoke to me.
First it only whispered and went out the rear end very quietly too.
But then it started talking much more loudly.
I could barely keep those words inside me.
I knew that things would be bad soon.
And the worst thing was that the door was closed.
I wanted to go to Nut, but every step was dicing with danger.
I couldn't lick his ears in my current state,
so I only whined a bit, but Nut didn't move an inch.
I closed my eyes and let the belly say everything it wanted to.
Gump, you must be joking!
Why didn't you wake me up? You're not a dog, you're a pig!
But you'll clean that up yourself. I'm not going to do that.
Oh, come on, come on!
But with us dogs, it's like when something leaves us,
it's as if it had never belonged to us.
Well, nothing.
He's neither texting nor calling.
I don't know.
Maybe they threw our story back at him.
Never mind, I'm not going to carry that phone about with me all day.
If you carry it in your pocket, it apparently kills sperm, you see?
Really? Huh.
Wait! Wait!
Wait!
Yes?
No.
No, we don't need a new energy tariff.
No, we really don't need one! Thank you, goodbye.
Didn't you hear me?
Oh, it's you, Father. Hello.
Yeah. How are you?
Yeah, we're fine. We're enjoying ourselves here, myself and Gump...
Oh, you're calling because of the book. We'd forgotten all about it. Yeah.
What?
Are you serious?
Oh, Father, you're the best!
You'll go to heaven one day.
No, that's not what I meant, Jesus! Not even "Jesus." Never mind.
Have a nice day and thank you.
Goodbye!
Gump!
Gump,
should I really go?
Paws crossed.
- Gump's a true original? - Gumpy, come on.
We've never done as much for people as we have for this dog.
He's such a character, isn't he?
Naty! Gump's on television!
Did you trim his claws today? No?
- Naty, come here! - What?
- Gump's on TV! - Gump?
During the first 20 minutes he always looks good.
- The first 20 minutes, I see. - He's like a professional actor.
- He keeps it up for the first half hour. - Well, I suppose we could make it.
Alright, everybody, Adam Brabec and Gump!
Hello.
And shall we have one for Gump?
THURSDAY 9/26 FROM 5 P.M. LAUNCH PARTY IN PANKRÁC SHOPPING CENTER
For a few days and weeks afterwards there was a really big fuss around our story.
We went back to that big city quite often
as well as to other places
where there were lots of people waiting for us.
Everyone always came up to me,
and the strange thing was that everyone knew me by name.
Say hello, everybody!
We would simply go everywhere where we'd make people happy.
To schools, hospitals, and to places similar to hospitals,
but from which one wouldn't go back home.
I met a lady who loved dogs there,
and had had a lot of them during her life.
Myself and Nut heard her whole life story.
When she was younger, she healed people. She was a doctor.
And now she was lying in bed without being able to get up on her own.
For a long time, she didn't tell anyone anything.
And for a really long time, nobody, apart from the nurses,
was interested in her life.
When we went back there after a while she wasn't there anymore.
Maybe she needed to tell someone about her life for one last time
before she departed it.
But one of the most important human stories
still awaited me.
- Hello. - Hello.
Alright, here we are. Come on!
- Hello. - Iva.
It's good of you to come, the children are looking forward to seeing you.
- Come on in. - Alright.
- You have to take your shoes off here. - I see.
But what's a dog supposed to take off when he doesn't have shoes?
That's another of our advantages, dog feet are also our shoes.
- My daughter Susie exercises here. - I see.
But she hasn't been doing very well lately.
How come?
She's angry at her legs. Here it is.
Come on in.
- Oh, Gump! - She really likes Gump, too.
We often talk about how brave he is.
It was Susie.
Her legs and feet hadn't listened to her since she was a baby.
She didn't feel any strength in them and couldn't stand on them.
The feet she put a different sock on every time.
She promised me that one day she'd
bring me cup of a coffee for breakfast herself.
That's nice of her.
And what if we, Gump and I, helped you here
with Susie a bit?
What do you think?
- Yeah, okay. - Yeah, okay. Okay.
I've played this role of a worm on a hook with him before.
And like back then, I didn't mind it here either.
We're looking forward to seeing you again.
Thank you very much.
We said goodbye to Susie's mother
and once again I noticed Nut's startled eyes.
It happens when he likes someone but doesn't know it yet.
- Bye! - But everyone around him already does.
And believe me Behind the door there's a wild river
That reflects the whole of heaven Calling you into the distance
And when you burn up in it Like a supernova
Don't forget
That
Life is beautiful Even at the end of the world
The most beautiful sentence In the anthology
You have wings, so fly...
When Nut's in love, he should be banned from driving.
Once, we nearly crashed into the car in front of us.
I was so scared that I nearly peed myself.
Fantastic.
- I've got a surprise for you. - What?
- We're going on a visit. - Superb!
Jesus...
I liked the bone she brought me.
So I started calling her the Bone Lady.
And now maybe you're thinking I really have gone crazy.
Once there was a pig running about in the hospital corridor.
I started wagging my tail so it could see that I was alright.
But its tail just bobbed around at its backside.
Hmm, probably a different language.
But when it looked at me with its eyes, I understood it.
Because all animals speak the same language with their eyes.
His name was Prince and he came here to help people.
But being born as a pig isn't a win in life.
For most people, they're only a walking, oinking lunch for their plate.
Prince should have been black pudding long ago.
They fattened him up in the yard and, when he was fat enough,
they loaded him onto a cart and were taking him to a place
where they'd make lunch out of him.
Schnitzels, schnitzels...
But when the car stopped on a country road,
Prince was somehow able to get out of the cart
and escape to the forest.
He wandered about for a few days
until he was found by someone who gave him love.
So now Prince, because of the one good person,
is giving it back to all the people here.
Oh, come on, Gump!
I was a bit taken aback, because it looked
as if it was my standing by the chain.
Well, look at that! She looks like you, doesn't she?
There's something really odd about that dog.
She's the spitting image of you.
So I'll ring the bell, okay?
- Hello! - What's up?
What do you think's up?! And don't shout at me here!
- What's up, boss? - Hello.
I'm not buying or selling anything, And I'm not a Jehovah's Witness, either.
I wanted to ask about that dog of yours.
Because it's really similar to mine.
So we were wondering if maybe they're siblings.
How would I know? I wasn't there, so I didn't see, you see?
- Okay. So have a nice day. - You too.
Hang on! They're really quite similar, aren't they?
- That's what I was saying. - Božena! Boža!
Come on, Božka!
- Yeah, what's up? - Tell me, where did you...
Where did you find that mutt?
At a marketplace or something... From an old man. I told you.
She told me it was at a marketplace.
Hear that? Could it really be your sister? Like in my book.
Could we borrow her for a moment?
We'll take her for a walk and... Then we'll come back, I promise.
- What's her name? - We don't call her by her name.
But the guys in the pub call her Ciggie.
Like a cigarette. Long, white body and a yellow filter at the top.
- Yeah. Just like you. - Oh, great.
You can borrow her. But give her something to eat, okay?
Fine.
And careful with her teats, they're sensitive.
Come on, Boža, untie her, I'm too dirty. Alright.
It was my sister. We recognized each other.
I hadn't seen such a happy dog for ages as soon as he opened the gate.
She jumped like she was on a trampoline and smiled with her eyes.
This girl had a very strange doggy illness.
It's called "unsniffedness."
And almost every dog that's tied to a chain gets it.
He's already got all the scents around his area mapped out.
And when he gets out, he's like he's lost all his senses.
Luckily, this illness can be treated.
You have to take the dog for walks really often
and fill up his empty snout
with those new scents until he can't take anymore.
I'm going with you! Gump, wait!
Every piece of grass, every little stone and flower
were extremely valuable to her at that moment,
so I started to call her Little Flower.
Hey, don't be annoyed. A promise is a promise.
But I also promise you that we'll drop by for her sometime again. Really.
Don't make faces.
Come on.
Come on. Let's go, Gump.
Come on!
Don't be naughty! We're going!
See how good Ciggie is. Come on!
Fine, so...
Okay, I'll try it.
But I can't guarantee the result. Come on!
- We're here! - Oh, great.
- Come on, you. - We only didn't manage the food.
But it occurred to me that I could leave you a hundred here and you could...
Better. Hope you do well. Bye.
And we also thought...
I'm looking for a companion for Gump here.
- You wouldn't sell her, would you? - No way. She's not for sale.
Me and my wife like her, she's got the whole space for herself.
Out of the question.
- And how much would you pay for her? - How much?
- Two? - Keep it.
Three thousand.
Five?
- Ten. - Ha! I heard fifteen.
- Božka, he did say fifteen! - Fine, but we'll take her right now.
Not until after the weekend. Thank you very much. Bye.
- And the lead. - The lead after the weekend.
- Hello. - Hello.
How was your day?
Well, we'll have to tell you all about it.
- We're looking forward to it. - Hi, Susie.
Hi.
- It's really nice here. - Thank you.
But I fought for his sister like a lion.
And the fella felt so small, didn't he? This small!
And I offered him fifteen thousand straight away.
You're such a hero.
- No, I'm not. - Yes, you are.
Just think of what awaits you tomorrow. All those doggies.
Well, that...
That's for Freddie.
Nut told that story about my sister several times that day.
He probably wants to stay here as long as he can.
That multicoloured bird outside was constantly squawking,
as if somebody wanted to kill it.
It even woke Nut up.
What?
What's...
What's the time?
Bloody hell!
Gump! We've overslept!
Come on! Let's go, fast!
We're sorry.
So, Gump, chop chop. Alright.
Good morning.
Yeah.
I knew the place we'd come to.
It was that big hill where Freddie was born.
And in his memory, Nut invited a few friends
who also have dogs here today.
Hopefully someone'll come.
Suddenly my snout was tickled by a well-known smell.
The smell of wild strawberries!
My Naty!
Naty Strawberry from the dog shelter by the river.
The prettiest girl with tousled hair in the world.
It felt as if my paws weren't touching the ground at all,
it was more like one big jump.
I almost can't remember anything for a few minutes.
Probably only that,
instead of my head, it was my heart controlling everything inside me.
I'd visited my heart so many times before to have look at this girl!
That day, quite a lot of friends arrived.
So many people knew our story. Freddie would have been happy.
RADIO BLANÍK - WE PLAY NICELY AND CZECH
So we took a picture as well. Sir...
Thank you.
- What a coincidence. - We're here too.
- Do you want my autograph? - Of course.
- Well, we wrote this with Gump. - Yeah, I know.
We looked up your dog on the internet,
and I must say that Ciggie comes from a good family.
We're so proud.
- I hope you'll like it. - We like it already.
Sorry. It's like a golden gate. Sorry.
That's the guy who owns Gump's sister.
- What? - Hmm.
Did you see Gump's sister? Yeah?
I only saw my sister for a brief moment.
But I lost her immediately amongstall those people's legs.
And over there... Look. That's his sister over there.
So if you want, go and get a photo with her, too.
- Can I have your autograph? - Sure, you can.
Like this? Yes, like this.
- You're welcome. - Thank you.
But I need some money. Even a dog wouldn't do things for free.
Money.
- Hello. - Your autograph, please.
- Of course. - Isn't it for free?
No. Money here, please. There we go.
Alright. Come on.
Where? Over here?
Cash, please. Great. Thanks. First the dough and then I sign it, okay.
- Thank you very much. - You're welcome.
Look at that, he's selling Gump's sister. He's collecting money.
- He can't be serious. - Yes, he can!
Photo! But give me a hundred.
Good.
Money here.
Ha! Got it!
- Oh, my goodness! - Yeah.
- Wait here. - Yeah.
Whoever's got cash, get in line. Who's got cash?
What are you doing here?
Having pictures taken for money? Did you accept money?
- Yes. - So?
I'll take her today, not tomorrow, as we'd agreed.
- We didn't make any agreement. - Yes, we did!
- Don't shout at me! Give her to me! - Where are you going?
- He's attacking our child, come on. - Hang on!
Don't give her to him!
- Wait, where are you going? - No-one will shout at me here!
Leave my dog alone!
- Watch out! - Excuse me, madam...
Watch out, I have a child, he's got diarrhoea.
Excuse me, madam...
At that moment I stood there like I'd been burned.
That beautiful day full of sun and memories
suddenly looked like a storm closing in.
Hop!
Jump! Hop! Hop!
Hop! Hop! Hop! Hop!
Look, he's training her like some kind of monkey.
Jump! Hop! Hop!
Hop! Hop! Here's a ball. Ball. Hop!
- And the way he's shouting at her. - Hop! Hop!
I don't even want to think about what else he'll do with her.
And now this.
Good.
Off you go, run around a bit.
On you go! It looks nice on you.
It was clear that we'd still have to fight a lot for Little Flower.
Where are they going?
Bloody hell.
I've got a surprise for you, children!
Children, I've got a doggy! A real, live doggy! Have a look!
Come and play. Go to them! Come and play, don't be scared.
It's a girl, tickle her a bit.
- So how much did you say? - Six grand.
With the hat, that's six grand. That's how it is.
Okay.
In the morning that multicoloured bird started squawking again.
But this time it didn't annoy me.
Thanks to him we didn't oversleep last time.
So I wanted to thank him.
But the closer I got, the bigger fuss he made.
His eyes started burning like embers.
What are you doing? I only want to thank you.
I hope I don't have to fight him.
If I bit once, it'd be curtains for him.
So, for maybe the first time in my life,
I put my tail between my legs and ran away.
I'm still quite ashamed about that.
Just don't tell anyone about it, ever.
Over breakfast in the morning, we all held a council of war.
Nut wanted to report the man to the police.
Why not?
My idea was to get over the fence somehow and free Little Flower from the chain.
- And I'll do... - No, that's out of the question. No.
- So... - And how about strangling him?
No, no, no.
- Mommy! - Come on!
So the next day we were at the place with Little Flower again.
I felt like a detective.
Like a police dog investigating a crime.
It was a stake-out like in a film.
Alright, let's go. On you go. Throw!
You missed. But doesn't matter. Again! Oh, you hit me. Be careful.
Try again. Go! Doesn't matter. And one hundred's gone!
Doesn't matter, once more. There's still a chance. No worries.
Don't skimp on that.
- I've got it! - Look what he's doing to your sister!
Throw again! I've got it! Again!
Alright. Doesn't matter. Throw! And again.
See it?
I can't stand this anymore!
Let's go!
- Alright, that's enough! - It's not enough!
- What are you doing? - Out of the way!
- Go away! - Out of the way! Wait!
Doesn't matter, see you next time. Bye!
Wait!
I couldn't leave Nut in the lurch during that fight.
We went back to our metal hut
and the whole of the world around was passing through my nose.
Suddenly, out of all those scents, I noticed something strange.
As if a red bulb had lit up there.
I know that stench!
That's what Little Flower's man smells like.
He must be somewhere nearby.
So I ran after the line of his smell.
I ran like the wind looking for the place where I'd bite him on the backside.
Gump!
Gump!
Where are you?
Gump!
Gump, come on!
Gump, come home!
I ran after him for a long time, through several forests and villages.
- Where have you been, you rascal? - But the coward got away in the end.
Just to be on the safe side, I kept constant watch.
It was a difficult day. And to make matters worse,
Nut lost his phone in the grass when he was looking for me.
So I preferred not to say anything about where I had been.
Oh, dear.
Well, never mind...
So I'll buy a new one.
The one with the buttons this time.
Here...
Oh! I think we have a visitor.
Look who's coming!
I'd completely lost hope. Hello there!
Me too. I couldn't sleep for several days, so I went there after work yesterday.
There was only that lady in the garden. But all she was interested in was money.
I was ready to leave all my savings there.
Our Bone Lady said that it was the best deal of her life.
One doesn't have to save the whole world;
it's enough to rescue one animal.
Because by doing so, the whole world of that animal is saved forever.
Wait for me here, I'll go into town and sort out the phone situation.
And I'll be back in no time, okay?
Alright.
With my snout pressed against the glass, I kept watch for Nut coming back.
But after a moment, the glass was completely steamed up,
and I couldn't see anything.
I wanted to bark, but the rope didn't let any air into my neck.
I started to choke and my eyes stopped telling me what I was seeing.
Only my snout was still working.
My companion until the very last breath.
When I started losing even that, I suddenly felt a wind on it.
And my head got the last piece of information.
The door was open!
I jumped out of the car, but now I needed my legs.
Fast! And all four of them.
I know how to run for my life, so I didn't panic.
I got to the edge of the forest and looked around to see where to go next.
It hit me like a bolt of lightning.
I saw a rainbow in the sky between the trees.
That'll be the rainbow bridge for sure!
That's the end of my journey. I have to go to Freddie.
Everything was supposed to happen just because of this moment.
I started running to the place where the bridge began
without even looking at my paws.
I flew through another forest and another field,
but the bridge was still really far away.
There it is! Outside the village! By the road where the cars go.
And then everything was white for a long time.
But don't worry, I felt no pain.
I kept on running, but there was no mud or road
under my paws, only the rainbow bridge.
And from the rainbow bridge, more dogs suddenly ran up.
But there were people there, too.
Everyone greeted each other in that meadow
as if they hadn't seen each other for ages.
As if they hadn't seen each other for a lifetime.
I ran amongst them and saw their stories in their eyes.
But I needed to find my human, the only one I wanted to see.
It was as if my snout stopped working. I couldn't smell anything.
Nothing at all.
Only my heart was still working,
looking for a path to keep running along.
And then I saw him.
I knew that it was him.
Gump, my boy!
My beloved Freddie. My life!
My boy!
We'll be together again. And this time forever!
Look at you!
Welcome back.
You've run quite a long way, haven't you?
Alright.
After a few days I went back to Nut.
The poor man was really thin and pale, because he'd been so scared for me.
The first time he saw me at the vet's, he started shaking all over.
We were staying with the horses now, but it wasn't me anymore,
I wasn't very happy.
Why couldn't I stay with Freddie for at least a moment?
Maybe, up there, I was supposed to understand something.
Someone had chosen me to make sure I'd tell you all
not to be sad when your dog isn't in your life anymore.
Because he's waiting for you beyond the rainbow bridge.
But everything around me wasn't sad. There was a tiny one amongst the horses.
His eyes were full of life and you could see how happy he was.
It was the horse from the fair.
Nut went back for him when I was in hospital.
He probably wanted the best deal of his life as well.
Very good.
And Susie the Sock managed to bring her first coffee.
Thank you! Come here!
Our metal home wasn't there any more,
it was just a patch of burned grass in the valley.
Little Flower's old master was punished for what he did.
So he won't be able to harm us for some time to come.
Everything started going back to normal. But one thing was different.
Our Bone Lady. Her scent had changed.
Gump?
You can see it, can't you?
Yeah.
Yeah,
we're expecting a baby.
But please...
I've got some news for you.
In a few months' time, there'll be one more of us
on the farm here.
Yeah. Will it be a horse, or a dog?
You'll be a daddy.
So...
A boy or a girl? I haven't got a single book about that!
- And you'll push the pram! - Gump, bring the slivovitz!
Now I'll skip through our time together really quickly.
Bone Lady's belly grew and Nut constantly stroked and hugged her.
Do you know where my coat is?
Children, behave yourselves, okay?
Susie, you're not going to school today,
you're keeping an eye on the doggies instead.
And you keep an eye on her. And don't set the house on fire!
And we'll bring you another companion.
Keys! Do you know where my keys are?
Come on.
Okay?
A few days later, I saw that little person, too.
And I suddenly felt huge responsibility.
As if the love of this family connected in a big circle,
one that I belonged to as well.
I wanted to be there with them. I really wanted it a lot.
And at that moment, I understood.
Now I know what it was that drew me back.
I still have to teach someone
how to live.
THE END
Gump is a five-year-old dog boy.
As a puppy, he was rescued from very bad conditions.
While in the first film three other dogs shared his role,
in this one he managed it all on his own.
What seemed to be a big risk at the beginning,
when in fact Gump is not a professional canine actor,
eventually turned out to be the biggest plus.
Gump acts as freely as he lives his life.
Jenny, named Little Flower in the film,
is a dog girl rescued from a Romany settlement in Rožňava.
Saved by the Dog Life organization, which had the following headline
in the adoption advert:
This piece of information reached Filip and a few days later,
Jenny was making Filip's mother, Hana Rožková, happy.
And she does so to this day.
Rufus, named Julian in the film, lived with his family in Tenerife.
Their car ended up in a ravine after an accident.
With his broken spine, Rufus managed to crawl onto a road and stop the traffic.
That is how the crashed car was discovered
because it could not be seen from the road.
The family was saved, but they did not want to keep injured Rufus anymore.
The Podenco-In-Distress organization saved him,
and that is where he is now waiting for a new home.
Prince is a four-year-old Göttingen pig. His owner could not keep him at home,
so he ended up in a garden shed where his master would visit him
at weekends.
However, one of the neighbors felt so hungry one day,
he decided to steal and eat Prince.
But Prince fought for his life
and he was rescued by dog trainer Radka Formanová, his current owner.
They go to retirement homes together from time to time
where Prince works as a piggy therapist.
This little stallion called Tomorrow was 23 years old at the time of filming.
For a considerable part of his life, he was a circus star
carrying small children on his back after the show.
As a useless, sore animal,
he was later offered for sale, but nobody wanted him.
Only a few hours before the slaughter, he was saved by Mili Malinová
from the organization Ponyterapy, Joy for Everyone
and the Enjoying the World with a Dog organization.
Unfortunately, Tomorrow enjoyed his new home
only for a few months.
Now he gallops in the meadows behind the rainbow bridge.
