She said she's a pro with primitive fire, so I let her take the lead.

And maybe that pressure's just getting to her.

Heather, today was a hard day. We are all beat down.

And I know that your body has taken a hit.

But you are a strong, strong woman.

[Patrick] It's okay to, like, vent and let it out.

But, like, quitting's not an option for any of us.

I think it's best if we just take a minute to, like, chill out.

[Heather] I'm worried.

Because we still can't start a fire.

And I don't know if I can hold on to this hope anymore.

I'm just fed-up.

three teams of three remain stranded on the deserted island.

To the northeast,

under the dense, jungle canopy...

and I'm gonna go take the trap.

he turns salvaged airplane wire into a snare.

Those cables might get us some bacon at the end of the night.

But it's Na'im's innovative shrimp trap...

that provided their latest meal.

Hey, guys! We got shrimp tonight.

-[Kerra whoops] -[Bulent] Beautiful!

I do wanna check the traps and feed we left for the pig.

As long as that's set, it's just a sit and wait game.

Look at the pathway.

There's a fresh mark.

He's around here somewhere.

Which makes it quite dangerous because that's a big-ass pig.

There's dirt right there that has been moved.

So the chance is

that he went through there

or he jumped over here.

He definitely was there in the coconut.

There's no coconut left.

That means I have to funnel this thing down

all the way to this barrier,

give him no chance to go anywhere but through these traps.

[pensive music playing]

[Kerra] What's the verdict, boss?

-Uh, he was there, all right. -[Kerra] Yeah?

I think the first action should be beefing up the tunnel.

It is a big animal.

And the tusks are ridonkulously dangerous.

-[Kerra] Yeah. -Killing him gonna be difficult.

[Kerra] I'm thinking we've got some stuff here.

Yeah? We've got the metal that was covering our wood.

[Na'im] Yeah, we got my bat.

I mean, I'm not a hunter I don't do this stuff.

So, but, in my mind, if we put it there

and lots of foliage,

give the illusion that he can't get through.

[Bulent] You know, everybody thinks

I don't play well with others, I'm not a team player.

I don't think that's the question.

The question is, what are you bringing onto the table?

To be in my team?

Yes, we will, uh, go with whatever we make.

We will adjust if it needs to,

but let's get these panels and stuff up.

but I've done this a couple of more times.

And if you don't do it right, you're gonna spend even more energy.

[Na'im] Getting that pig would mean a lot.

Definitely feed us well for several days.

And I love trap-making.

Because I am a hunter and I do know how to build things.

[Bulent] And it is really rocky, feet are torn.

Yeah, it sucks, but that's part of life.

And then we can evaluate if we need to use that for here or higher.

[Na'im] So the method that we're using

is sort of a snare and funnel.

With the idea being that if you can

flush the pig into the game trail,

um, he would walk into those snares and get hooked.

We're using some of the scraps we found

to make a physical barrier there, like on certain parts of it.

So that it really is a funnel.

So that your only way

of getting to the bait is to go directly into it.

I can't put these things through deep enough

to create actual support

so it won't fall.

Uh, you know, there's two holes right here. Maybe if you suck one...

[Bulent] No, the sticks can't handle it.

in being able to, you know, take down the critters.

But it just feels like we're, like, very much following behind one person.

and this... one good one can hold this entire thing.

it would ensure the rest of our challenge.

amid the thick mangrove swamps...

Honestly, I'm feeling very tired today.

-[Rachel] I know. -I kind of feel depleted.

[Candice] I know I did a lot yesterday with limited food.

-[Rachel] Obviously, we need to eat. -[Justin] Yes.

Because your girl is hungry.

Grab him.

-I'm so sorry, dude. -Oh!

[narrator] It's been five days since Candice secured

her team's only significant protein.

[Candice] I've never processed a pelican before.

[narrator] And a close call with fire

left their only source of sparks

dangerously low.

Fire needs to be going 24/7.

We're starving.

We're so hungry today.

And the past couple of days have been roller-coasters

so my plan is to go out

and harvest more food for us,

find coconuts, do whatever I need to do to get food.

[captivating instrumental music playing]

Hungry, haven't eaten.

But getting water, it's the most important task on the team

because without water, we have no survival at all.

I primarily go out, the girls also go out at times.

And it gives me purpose, too.

I feel, personally, most men in this situation,

with two females, would be like, "Hey, we're gonna do things this way, A, B and C."

And it's not like that for me. We're all teammates.

I grew up with a single mother.

And I was raised by cousins that were females

that were pretty much like my sisters.

So I feel good at communicating with my two partners.

We're all handling tasks. It's a beautiful partnership.

[captivating instrumental music playing]

I walk down the shore a bit because

every time the tide comes in,

it brings us a whole new batch of goodies.

It's like going to a flea market

where the wares change every single day

and you never know what you're gonna find.

Cool, cool, cool, cool.

I find this little metal box

and I'm really excited about it because

with our fire situation,

we don't known if we'll be able to get another fire if ours goes out.

But because we have this metal box,

I think I can make some char-cloth

that will make our odds a lot better.

[narrator] The creation of char-cloth

starts with swatches of organic material,

such as cotton fibers,

tightly packed and sealed with minimum oxygen.

Extended exposure to heat

triggers a process of thermal decomposition

that turns the fibers into highly flammable charcoal.

I'm gonna drill a little hole here on top of this canister

and then put strips of cotton inside.

I don't want it to be too full.

The fire is going to ignite those strips without oxygen.

And so, it's going to, like, charcoal-ize it.

And once that goes out, I'll pull it.

And then we'll have all those bits of char-cloth we can use to start fires.

I would love to just find a coconut.

Oh, my God. Look at that.

I am finding a ton of snails.

Come on, little guy.

I can grab some,

and that way at least I go back with something versus empty-handed.

I tapped on my first challenge in Zambia.

But feel like I'm finally in my groove.

Like, I'm not trying to survive anymore.

Like, I'm surviving out here, and I'm only gonna keep getting better and better.

This is a big win for us.

Hopefully, it tastes good but if not,

we'll force it down 'cause it's what we need to keep going.

[narrator] On the opposite coast...

on the island's largest stretch of beach...

[Patrick] It is hot as balls.

I'm just, like, daydreaming about [imitates chugging water]

the feeling of just chugging a bottle.

Water's our highest agenda right now.

Everyone's feeling really thirsty.

We knocked down three coconuts. That helps a lot.

But we're very far from being fully hydrated.

[narrator] After five days in the jungle without fire...

So I'm done [bleep] around with friction fire.

I'm, like, over wasting my [bleep] time.

[narrator] ...castaways Heather, Patrick and Andrew

headed north without a map,

trekking over three treacherous miles to a vast beach.

But now, they have no fire...

[grunts]

and no fresh water.

Ready to go get water, I think.

[Patrick] Let's grab our bottles and head out.

Where's the big, big one?

[Andrew] I have it.

[Heather] Even with coconut water I'm consuming at the moment,

my lips are still dry and sticking on my teeth.

We've gotta find a fresh water source and we gotta find it now.

[Andrew] At this moment in my life,

I'd rather find fresh water than win the lottery.

-[Heather] Oh. -'Cause that's...

-I'm so thirsty right now. -is what... what I actually need.

[Andrew] Got this kind of water tributary that leads right out to the ocean.

But there's also salt water in this.

And that's enough to make me kind of nervous.

'Cause I'm like, "Ugh!" Drinking salt water can dehydrate you even faster

and eventually lead to death.

So I'm thinking maybe if we continue to follow it upstream,

there'll be a little bit more flow to it.

And hope it's gonna be drinkable at some point soon.

It looks a bit murky.

Seems to be flowing that way.

[Heather] Obviously, everything we're stepping on is damp.

That means the ocean's coming up here at higher tide.

That means this water source is contaminated.

-[Andrew] Yeah. -[Heather] The salt in it,

-[Heather] it's gonna be too high for us to drink. -[Patrick] Yep.

[Heather] Obviously, we've got some movement here.

If we walk around, continue to go, we're gonna find where it comes off from

and find a bigger source, maybe some springs.

[Andrew] Oh, my gosh. Think I see fresh water.

[Andrew] Something's happening over there where we gotta cross.

Wherever he is right now, he's watching us.

Oh, it's right over there, popped its head out,

saw us, went back down.

Wherever he is right now, he's watching us.

[Andrew] Patrick just saw a saltwater crocodile

which is cool! I love big, cool animals.

But also bad. That means there's another barrier

between us and fresh water.

And it's a barrier that can eat you.

[narrator] One of the most aggressive reptiles in the world,

the saltwater crocodile can grow up to 20 feet

and weigh more than 2,000 pounds.

We're gonna have to be able to get through it.

We'd have to go right around.

Part of it is tricky.

But I think that's a risk I'm willing to take.

Let's go get that water. All right.

It's a do-or-die. Without fresh water, we're done.

Our challenge is over.

[Patrick] Stick together.

[Heather] It's us against crocodiles.

If we want anything to drink, it just got worse.

[Patrick] We're at the source of the spring, dude.

-[Andrew] Really? -Yeah.

[Patrick] Comes right out of the ground right there.

There's nothing above this.

Natural spring.

This is a huge win for me.

And I want to cry because I'm barely hanging on.

This challenge, it's the hardest thing

I've ever had to do in my life.

[Patrick] It wasn't easy finding this spot. [chuckles]

[Candice] I went and got us some snails for dinner.

Probably 30, 30 or 40 in my bag.

I've never seen escargot on menus and I would never.

But I'll definitely try it.

Feel better about mollusks than mammals and birds, for some reason.

Protein's really important in situations like this.

And Candice is always willing to step up

and help our team and I'm so, so grateful for her.

So now we're eating snails.

We're cooking them in our toilet that we found.

Love this for us.

Love it, truly.

Um, we're just gonna turn it upside down, kind of roast them on the back.

You're gonna let them cook until they're very, very, very well done.

So I sat down with a mirror to try to get a reflection fire,

using the sun to actually start a fire.

It's... Now, we're partly cloudy.

Should we wait for it to pass?

'Cause we're still getting sunburn.

I know. It looks like we're gonna be cloudy for a while.

[Patrick] We gotta wait for the right conditions.

and sweat and get over-heated

because we continue using rocks that break

or it's, like, Bulent and Na'im are kind of in battle with each other.

What I was saying is, like, just have 'em right next to each other.

Well, for Bulent, this is very little space to be involved.

and I see our boat, which is supposed to be 100 yards that way,

is making its way towards the ocean.

I have a moment of panic

'cause I remember that we left that life-preserver on the boat.

And I'm gonna kick myself for days if we don't get it.

So I grab the life-preserver and...

I think that the water is going to be overhead.

But it actually ends up only being a couple of feet deep.

[breathing heavily]

I feel a jolt of pain

and I am terrified that I may have done some real damage.

I'm glad I didn't dive.

That was the first instinct. Oh!

I look back and I can see that the boat

is almost out to the ocean already.

So I'm glad that I was there when I was

and that I didn't hesitate to go after that life-preserver.

[Candice] Oh, my God! You had to go in for that?

[Rachel chuckling] I did.

And then when I went to jump in,

I hit the bottom hard,

and, like, my leg, like, hyperextended and it hurts so bad.

-Are you okay? -I think so, we'll see.

It's a bit of a concern but I will do

everything in my capacity to carry Rachel forward.

it's just not quite enough.

I'm on low motivation today for whatever reason, yeah.

But if you don't know how to talk to people,

then, like, communication skills are something you need to work on.

and who can't.

Hopefully, that helps alleviate things.

I'm trying to kind of take it easy.

But yes, I'm still in it. I'm not going anywhere.

But it's definitely frustrating.

She's going through almost the same

mental and physical constraints that I went through

when I was in Zambia and I didn't complete that challenge.

Knowing that I can go out

and harvest more food for us,

it makes me feel good that I'm giving us all what we need

to be strong and make it to day 21.

Think we have enough for... for dinner tonight.

Fantastic.

Last 24 hours feel almost like 21 days

with all of the highs and lows in such a short period of time.

That'd be good for cooking fillets.

You guys wanna tend fire, I'm gonna go look for more resources.

[Heather] Yeah.

[Patrick] Trying to see what the tide dragged in.

Start collecting food

so that we can food up.

The tide's pretty low.

This is a great opportunity to get things left behind.

Our little team, our little tribe,

has had such ups and downs.

When I cook it, I'm able to fillet it three times,

[Candice] Night 8, and we are having hermit crab for dinner.

-[Rachel] Mmm! -And we have decided to boil them.

-So... -And that means

that they're being boiled

in the toilet that we found.

How appetizing!

It's actually really gross.

I mean, we're boiling it but...

yeah, I just, I don't even wanna think about it.

I swallowed and felt, like, this sharp pain

immediately on the right side of my face.

And then it just felt like

instantly, my face started swelling up.

it's like throbbing pain behind my ear,

down my neck,

and onto my cheek.

[Justin] Medic, medic, Candice is requesting medical attention.

I don't know if I was bit by something.

I didn't feel anything. It just came outta nowhere.

[Candice] We're waiting to see if the swelling goes down.

And if not, they're gonna take me out of here.

Candice was, like, concerned about a bite

Candice, Rachel and Justin are scraping the beach for food.

[Candice] We do what we gotta do to get to day 21.

[retches]

threaten to send two of them from the challenge.

[Candice] We're waiting to see if the swelling goes down, and if not,

they're gonna take me out of here.

That's just not fair.

Well, it's not helping. I feel like it's still so swollen.

It's just scary 'cause it's around my face and neck

Like, underneath my right ear, and it doesn't go away.

And that's why I'm scared.

It's swollen bit and swell down

so I get really concerned about it.

Her cheek's a little bit swollen.

But I don't see no bite.

It's not red but she's in a lot of pain.

[Lauren] I know it's hard, Candice,

but we just don't have the resources here right now to treat you

in the field safely.

I'm so upset 'cause I came so far

And this just came out of nowhere.

[sniffling] I'm devastated.

I don't wanna leave my team like this.

I think Justin will do great.

I'm worried about Rachel.

I hate leaving her behind.

[Rachel sobbing] I love you so much.

You just gotta get better. It's okay.

And I'm so proud of you for how far you came.

'Cause it wasn't easy.

I am absolutely heart-broken for her

because I know how badly she wanted this.

Looking at this challenge without her right now, it's pretty daunting.

Even though we're jerks...

[Justin] It's unfortunate, losing Candice.

She's so knowledgeable.

Uh, has been hunting and fishing in her entire life.

[Candice] Love you guys.

[Justin] Definitely we're taking a hit collectively as a team.

[sobbing]

I didn't wanna let my family back home down.

And so, the second time failure sucks worse than the first time.

[narrator] Candice was eventually diagnosed with a severe bacterial infection.

She was treated with antibiotics and made a full recovery.

My brain is so all over the place right now.

[Justin] As far as the team, it's myself and Rachel.

She's also injured, so I really hope

she, uh, pushes through as well.

If not, I get stuck out here alone.

You're great and all

-but... [chuckles] it's not the same. -It's all good.

It's honestly, like, so hard to comprehend that she's not here anymore.

And it's wild to me, like, how close she and I have gotten

in just nine days.

Like, honestly, she's a huge part of the reason

why I'm still here in the first place.
