- I received a phone call
when we were out at the water.

You were having such a good
time, I didn't wanna tell you.

(sighs) Your grandfather
passed away early this morning.

(Henry breathes uneasily)

He had a heart attack.

They found him in the barn.

We're moving to the farm.
We're gonna take it over.

(Henry sniffs and cries)

That's what he would want us to do.

Take care of his animals.

And that's what we're gonna do.

(somber music continues)

(Henry exhales)

- Wow. Look at the size of that painting.

- He really did love donkeys.

That's probably why he has so many.

(door bangs)

how this place is so huge.

- It's a mess though.

- The apartment was a lot easier to clean

because it was so small.

- Yeah, but at least
we don't have to share

a bathroom with our dad anymore.

- Yeah. (chuckles)

the shower curtain.

We must have knocked it over somehow.

That's all I ever wanted for you girls

- That's grandpa's journal.

I found it in the old chest over there.

- Grandpa had a diary?

- I guess you could call it a diary.

Mm, he used to log everything in here.

- Yeah, but I was wondering something.

Grandpa was 87 years old.

How did he take care of
all the animals by himself?

- No, he didn't take care of
the animals all by himself.

There's a girl named Abby
that comes by and helps him.

I decided to keep her hired on.

bit more about the animals

- I wonder how they
feel about two strangers

coming down to feed them.

They're probably expecting grandpa.

have emotions like us,

Imagine how we would feel if Dad

just dropped dead in front of us.

What would we do without him?

- I guess Grandpa really
was like a father to them.

He took care of them, he kept them safe.

They were probably even
closer to him than we were.

Let's face it, he was a loner.

We never really got to
spend much time with him.

And if we did then I'd probably
still be bawling my eyes out

like when Mom passed away.

- I don't wanna talk about Mom right now.

I've finally been able
to kind of block it out.

And now I just wanna
focus on making Dad happy.

dad and finish unpacking.

- What'd you two think about the animals?

- I think it's going to be a long summer.

- I did some counting.

We have 14 donkeys, one sheep,
two horses and two ponies.

But I want you two to be careful.

Don't walk behind them,
don't stand behind them.

I don't want you to get kicked.

I was just out with the horses
and I almost got kicked.

So it's gonna take them some time

to get used to us, I think.

- Yeah, we'll be careful.

- I'm gonna get started on
dinner. Y'all get cleaned up.

We're gonna hit the sack early tonight

'cause I don't know about
you two, but I'm exhausted

from moving all those boxes.

- Would it be okay if we
did some reading before bed?

Because we found old books that
we're excited about upstairs

of tough getting adjusted

into a new place, and I
think it would help us feel

so I can repair the paddocks

from all the rain that's been coming.

- Why were you talking to
the plumber about the shower?

- I called the plumber because last night

I woke up and the shower was on.

I didn't wanna tell you girls

'cause I didn't wanna spook you.

And he thought I was crazy.

So I don't know what to tell ya.

- Maybe grandpa was
already having weird things

happening to him.

Maybe that's why he had the books.

Maybe he was doing research.

- Okay, the book I was reading last night

was about ghosts and haunted houses.

- Grandpa had books about
ghosts in the house?

- And it mentioned something
called "poltergeist activity."

And it was talking about
lights turning on and off

and things being moved around.

Maybe the shower or something like that.

- You two are reading
ghost books before bed?

- I'm gonna go grab the books for you

so you can take a look at them.

- I think that'd be a good idea.

know if she's a murderer.

All he was told was that
Grandpa had a heart attack.

- Well, we better get used to her.

- I can't open it!

(both yelp)

(girls gasping)

- What is all the yelling about?

- Someone was shaking her doorknob around

and the doors were slamming
like crazy, and then look!

- What is happening on this property?

There's gotta be a reason for all this.

Look, you two sleep in my room tonight.

We're gonna figure this
out in the morning. (sighs)

(tense music)

(gentle music)

- Good morning, Abby.

- Where is your father?

- Ah, he went to the Seed and
Feed to get some more grain.

Do you always carry that blade?

- There's something
strange about this property

and this makes me feel safe.

Your grandfather chose
donkeys to keep him protected

while I chose something
a little more practical.

- Safe from what?

- Ghost?

- More like the feeling
of always being watched,

goosebumps on your arms,

the hairs on the back of
your neck standing up,

and the cold, crushing
feeling of death all over you.

They want to do more than just haunt you.

They wanna kill you.

Ghosts? I don't think so.

Come on, I'll show you my farm routine.

I'm gonna show you girls
how many scoops of grain

to give them at feeding time.

You need to give these guys a
scoop of grain in the morning

and a scoop of grain at night.
(grain pattering)

Now let's go over to the pony's stall.

- Abby, I was thinking about

what you said at the donkey house.

Who are they and why are they here?

- And why do they wanna kill us?

- Ever since your grandfather
uncovered some things

on this property, things
have gotten strange,

and they just keep getting
worse and more dangerous.

If you ask me, I think
they were responsible

for his heart attack.
- You mentioned

my grandfather chose donkeys
for protection, but why?

- Donkeys are spiritual animals.

They can see into the spiritual realm.

When they would come,
the donkeys would bray.

You know, "heehaw."

Your grandfather believed
they had some sort

of spiritual protection from demons.

- They were in the house last night.

They, they were banging on my
door and she couldn't open it.

It was completely shut, but
it was shaking like crazy.

(breathes uneasily) I didn't
know what was happening.

I was so scared.

- Then we were in the hallway

and they were slamming
doors all around us,

and suddenly they crashed into this wall

and made this giant hole.

- They're not happy.

They want you gone like your grandfather.

(tense music)

(grain pattering)

- So what are we supposed to do?

How do we get them to leave?

- They're getting stronger.

There's no hope.

(eerie music)

I've learned to live with it,

but I only work here during the day.

You live here.

My work's done for the day.

- We have to tell Dad.

This is more than just
a simple ghost story.

- Maybe Dad will know what
to do. (breathes uneasily)

- Maybe...

- Where are the girls?

- I don't know where they are,

but I finally got that rat

that's been getting into the feed.

- Good job, Abby.

(footsteps pattering)

- I think I'll make a stew.

- [Henry] There you girls are.

- Dad, Abby thinks it's a
demon that's been haunting us.

And we've been reading Grandpa's diary.

These things have been
happening for a long time.

Abby said it started when Grandpa found

some things on the property.

And it says right here that
Grandpa found a human skull.

- Let me see that.

(eerie music)

(chair scraping)

"Today was a dark day.

I was finishing the well

and I dug up a human skull.

Had an unusual tool.

I gave the tool to Abby."

- The scythe. The thing
she's always carrying around.

That's the tool.

She says it brings her
protection from the ghost.

- That's why it brings her protection.

That's what killed the ghost.

She carries it around
because it's afraid of it.

- That's the answer. We have
to get that away from Abby.

She doesn't live here, we do.

If we had that here, it
could buy us enough time

to figure out how to
get rid of this thing.

- She'll kill us if we
try to get that from her.

- She will never put it down.

- You're right. That's
all that poor girl has.

(sighs) But we're missing the point here.

The ghost is afraid, so if
it's afraid of one thing,

it's gotta be afraid of something else.

We just have to find out what it is.

- Abby said then it
doesn't just wanna hurt us.

He wants to kill us.

- We cannot be scared.

There's one thing I know that
we never can give into fear.

- We're not scared.

- We just want it to leave.

Maybe there's something in
those books of Grandpa's

that can give us some advice
on how to get rid of it.

- I heard you. You said, "Help me."

But help you with what?

I have to show Dad. This is a clue.

Dad, I was sitting on the bench outside

and then I heard a voice
that said, "Help me."

So I followed it into the
woods and a tree came down

and almost hit me, I
jumped out of the way,

but then underneath another
big tree's roots, I found this.

(eerie music)

- Let me see this.

Mm-hmm.

"Mrs. Edwards vanishes without a trace."

What does this have to do with anything?

- Well, that's not all. Look at the paper.

Not only does it give us a
name, but there's a date.

- Now that I have a name, I
can call the local police.

Maybe there's a cold case file,

but maybe they'll have more
information on Mrs. Edwards.

And hopefully they can
tie it into this property.

But as of right now, we
don't know if Miss Edwards

lived here or not.

- Dad, you were in the military.

Don't you have any
friends, anyone you know

who can help us look up government records

or find something under that
name we found in this address?

- I might have a few
people that can help us.

I've been retired for a few years now

and everyone I knew retired with me.

- You make your calls and
see what you can find out.

We're going to the library
to see what we can dig up

because you can't do this alone.

(eerie music)

- [Chris] Hey stranger,
where have you been hiding?

- As far away from people as possible.

- [Rich] What do you need?

- Apparently the lady
that my father bought

the house from went missing.

- Give me the name.
- All I have

is the name Edwards.
- Ah, do you have a social?

- Look, I wouldn't ask for
help if it wasn't important.

- [Chris] Give me until tonight,

I'll have something for ya.

(eerie music)

(Heather panting)
(creepy breathing)

- Scared, scared of you. (panting)

I'm not scared of you.

(Heather gasping)

- What's wrong?

- I don't, I don't know what.

I don't know how it got there.
It was just looking at me.

It was there with me (breathes uneasily)

and I could just feel it,
and they wanted to hurt me.

Oh my god, they wanted
to kill me. (sniffs)

(Heather breathing heavily)

- Let's go tell Dad.

It always seems to leave when he's around.

- We can't tell Dad.

He's going through a lot right now

and I don't want him to
know that we're scared.

- Maybe you're right. Let's
leave all the lights on tonight.

- That's just it.

It was turning the lights on and off.

The lights can't do anything
to protect us from this.

- Sleep in my room tonight.

Two of us together is
better than being alone.

- I found your phone number
in my father's journal

and your book in his library.

- [Timothy] (inhales) Your
father did reach out to me

about some activity he was having.

I gave him a list of things
that I thought would help him,

but we were both coming up short on ideas.

- It's crashing through walls.

It's turning lights on and off.

It's turning showers on.
- I've never experienced

or heard of this powerful of an entity.

The last time we spoke, I had him get rid

of some potential trigger objects.

I never heard from him again.

- That's because he recently
died of a heart attack.

- [Timothy] We can explore
the trigger object prospect

This could be a book, clothing,
figurines, tools or jewelry.

I don't want to scare you,

but I feel that whatever this
is, it probably was the cause

I heard him scream, so I ran over,

and there in the hole
was a crusty old skull.

- Did you go with him
when he turned it in?

- No, he kept it.

- What did he do with it?

- I have no clue, but he gave me this.

It was buried with it.

I'll think of some ways
I might be able to help.

- I have a name for you.

It's Martha Edwards.

They filed a missing persons report,

but there's not much in the case file.

It's a cold case.

- How is there nothing in the case file?

- [Chris] The town of Grand
Valley referred the case to us.

The file contains the name
and address for Edwards

and their occupation,
selling grain and hay.

It does have another name
of Abby Wells listed.

- Abby?
- Because she's the one

who recorded her missing.

I guess the guys back then were too busy

or too lazy to follow up.

But when you have no
leads, you have to move on

to the next case.

this ghost that we have,

and I'm trying to get all the information

She's been doing strange

The animals were all outside

by the barn window

and it shattered beside me.

things happening in the house.

- He wouldn't say anything about it.

He always blew me off
and changed the subject.

but he was a bit creepy at times.

Just watching me while I worked.

He was always worried
about me living alone,

the ghosts and the animals.

in a weird way.

said I could keep it.

It was an antique.

Then he shooed me off, told
me to get back to work.

- Look, I want us all
to be comfortable here.

And I think we can do that
even with a ghost here.

of this problem for all of us.
