- And the distance between them?

- The same as we used on this side. The same specifications.

Just follow the plans and there'

be no problem.

(machine rumbling)

(footsteps crunching)

And make sure the cement has the same mix we've been using.

I don't want any skimping on that.

- Sir, you're wanted in the service tunnel. Hurry.

- Okay, I'll be right there.

- What about these? - Those things today.

- Moe, this is Rossi, do you read me?

Moe, this is Rossi. I told you to shut down.

You gotta hold up the drilling, you risk a cave-in here.

- What's wrong, Rossi?

- If they don't stop drilling,

this whole thing could come down.

- Nah, take it easy. - You gotta stop them.

- Ah, it's nothing.

- If you don't stop drilling, the whole thing could go.

- You know how much it costs to shut down that hole, do you?

Just short enough for that. I'll send you something.

(machine rumbling)

(birds chirping)

- The total height, including the freeze,

is 15 feet, six and a half inches.

- That's almost twice the width of the main entrance.

- Huh? - Yes, Professor.

- Now...

take a measurement across the width of the arch.

(birds chirping)

- Where's Professor Lasky? - Over there.

- You better have a look, Professor.

- A hole just opened in the wall.

A vault's right behind it.

- When did this happen? - Just now.

- Marcus was inside.

Those vibrations kept getting stronger and I don't know,

the wall caved in.

- They must be working on the subway right under us.

- They encountered some displacement the past few days,

but nothing to speak of.

And all of a sudden this.

No, this way, Professor.

- I'll follow you.

- We haven't touched anything.

Maybe we ought to reinforce it right away,

because the vibrations might cause a cave in

and block the passage again.

It could be dangerous.

Here we are, sir. Be careful.

There it is, Professor.

- This is what we've been searching for.

- Yeah. Thank God for the subway, huh?

(rocks crumbling)

- You spoke too soon.

Those bastards will bring everything down.

- No one has crossed this threshold in 2,000 years.

- Well, baby.

- Oh, the stars are out.

- It's lovely. - Here we are.

- Here we are.

Champagne.

Hey, don't drink at all. Leave some for me.

- Now, close your eyes.

- Why? - I got a surprise for you.

- What is it?

- Surprise is a surprise, you know?

- Oh, yes.

All right.

Can I look?

Hey, hey.

Come on, I don't like this waiting.

Let me look, huh?

Hey. Hey, where are you?

Hey, come on, where are you? What's going on?

Come on, answer me, Joe, where are you?

(bird squawking)

That's enough, now, where are you? What are you doing?

Joe, I'm afraid.

- [Director] Thanks, Alice, you were fine.

- Great. You were just perfect.

Hi, there.

- Hi, Kat.

- Here, put this on. It's cold here.

Oh, Alice, I want you to meet a friend of mine.

Ferdinando Koska, music critic from El Pais.

Did you have a good flight? - Si.

- He just flew into town. He wants an interview.

- Oh, all right. I'll be back in a minute, okay?

- Okay. - Come here.

- I don't work tomorrow, so we can be together.

What's the matter?

- Sorry, honey, I can't. I gotta see Lasky in the morning.

Oh, Alice,

we'll be through by noon.

It's not a tragedy.

- Nothing's a tragedy,

except for the fact that I spend more time

with the guy in the fish suit than with you.

Now, get outta here, will you?

Get out! - Okay.

- SeГ±orita, I will be very happy to know --

- What the hell do you want?

Marcus!

- Ah.

- The ancient Romans attached great importance

to cleanliness and physical culture.

These are the ruins of one of their many baths,

which were frequented not only by the rich,

but by the lower classes as well.

- This is what we've been searching for for over a year.

It's certainly the entrance to Damitiano's tomb,

but this is not an extension

to the catacombs we've been working on.

It's something different.

- But Professor, according to the printout,

it seems to be --

- The computer doesn't know everything.

- What?

- And neither do you.

Two hundred years before the Christians

built the tomb of Damitiano,

there was somebody else living underneath this mausoleum.

Legend speaks of monstrous divinities

to whom human sacrifices were made.

- Well, now, is anybody missing?

No, I guess we're all here.

Alright, let's go. Follow me, everybody.

(group chattering)

- [Boy] Here.

- Come on. - Shit.

- [Tour guide] Try to keep together, please.

- You dropped this.

- [Girl] Thanks.

- This is the mystery.

Damitiano's tomb has never been discovered.

- Maybe somebody hid the passageway on purpose.

- Yes, that's what I think.

Damitiano was sacrificed to a bloodthirsty Pagan God.

A God of evil.

That sacrifice provoked something.

We still don't know what it was.

We do know that everything was sealed forever.

Even the memory of the sacrifice was erased for 2,000 years.

- But that's what the legend says. It's only a supposition.

- We don't know what we're going to find

when we go down there,

but of one thing we can be certain --

that's the writing on the tombstone.

Those words serve as a message,

to transmit a warning.

"Invoked

or not invoked,

evil

will come."

- Good afternoon,

I will be your guide on a very special tour.

A trip in time back through the centuries

and through the arcane pathways of the spirits.

This is only a tiny part of the Roman catacombs.

An immense underground world.

Reaching out beneath the city,

under buildings, streets, squares.

Inextricable labyrinth.

- He's blind. - Blind?

- There's no need of eyes to see your way

in this place where only darkness reigns, my dear girl.

You must understand I've been living here since I was a boy.

Now, let us go.

- All right, come on. Try to keep together, everyone.

- I know from experience that in every group,

there is somebody who wants to go off alone.

But don't do it.

Especially in these catacombs, I wouldn't advise it.

Don't forget, we are now in a place of suffering,

of persecutions and a cemetery.

And if...if you are quiet awhile,

you can even hear the distant voices of those

who are buried here.

The excavations of the catacombs by the early Christians

dates from the first century A.D.

But there are many catacombs,

the oldest ones which were natural caverns,

or that were utilized by other cults.

For instance, that of myth...

- Hey, wait. What a bore this guy is.

Let's cut out, huh? - And go where?

I don't know. Out.

I can't take this guy another minute.

Come on.

(birds chirping) (thunder roaring)

(eerie music)

- The catacomb we are going through now

is still largely unexplored.

You see,

there are hundreds, hundreds of miles of catacombs in Rome

still to be explored.

- Hey, it's spooky here. - Nah.

- How about going back now? This place gives me the creeps.

- What's wrong? You scared?

- Yes, I'm scared.

- You're kidding. I told you not to worry.

- Mike, stop. - Oh, come on.

(eerie music cont.)

(rats squeaking)

(screaming)

- Come on, let's get outta here. Let's get outta here.

Hurry! Come on! (wind blowing)

We gotta go! Come on!

(screaming)

- Help me!

- Quiet. Quiet. (group chattering)

Be still. Silence.

- Help me!

Help me!

- Silence. Don't move.

(screaming)

(wind blowing)

(rats squeaking)

(screaming) (rats squeaking)

- Help me! Help!

- Take my hand.

You're all right now.

You're all right.

- Mike. Mike.

- It's okay.

(screaming) (rocks rumbling)

- Here, cover him. (coughing)

- Easy, now.

I don't think he's got any fractures,

but I want him X-rayed.

It's okay, boy. You're gonna be just fine.

Okay, lift him. (coughing)

All right, lift him up now.

Easy.

- Don't cry, Maria. He'll be all right.

Calm down, it's all over. Get in.

(birds chirping)

(ambulance siren wailing)

- He'll be fine.

- I hope so.

- You mustn't feel responsible.

You did what you could.

They're kids.

Kids are always doing these things.

- I'm sorry. - It's terrible.

- Yes, it's terrible.

- I just can't understand what they saw.

- It's not easy.

- Do you believe it was an hallucination?

- An hallucination?

That place is...

for those without eyes,

for those who can't meet the gaze of a demon

who has the power to confuse us.

Evil is not just a symbol.

Evil has a face and...

and... and...

and light sleep.

(upbeat rock music)

- Now, you see, after 1,800 years,

the stars will bring about an adverse conjunction for us

under the sign of scorpion.

And that's your sign, Alice.

- Oh, yeah? Ooh. - You don't believe me?

- There will be an alignment of the planets.

You'll see Mercury and Venus in Taurus opposite Pluto.

Tell her, Barbara, tell her.

This is no laughing matter.

- Yes, he's right.

The stars say that a catastrophe's on the way.

- Okay, there'

be a catastrophe, all right,

but only if you don't make me a plate of spaghetti.

- Spaghetti. Your whole world's just spaghetti.

I'm giving your horoscope to Barbara.

- Thank you.

- Your friend is late, huh? - Yeah.

- He'll get here when I'm ready for bed.

Even Marcus only wants me to warm his bed. It's true.

But it's not enough.

Oh, I wanna leave this town.

- Ah, come on. I'm starving. - For what?

- Two plates of spaghetti, please.

- Barbara, don't pinch my employees.

They get embarrassed when women do it.

- Okay, but what's the fun for us here?

- Well, girls, there's always me.

- Ah, I'd be careful if I were you.

There's a feline lying and waiting behind your planet.

- A feline? Most probably my cat.

- Hello, everybody. Sorry I'm late.

- I've been plotting the planets for Alice.

It's a time of decision for her.

It's dangerous - For marriage or separation?

- Hello, Marcus. How are you?

Ah, I see you can find the time to have fun.

Good. There are other things in life besides work.

- Work is fun for some of us.

- Hmm, that's nice for you. See you soon then.

- Who was that?

- His name's Gaspare.

He's an archeologist and an antique dealer.

A wheeler dealer.

And he used to teach archeology at the university.

- Then he found his true path. Boys under 20.

- I'm sorry, I told you I can't.

- Why not?

At least for a weekend.

Two whole days. Not just a night.

- Same old problem. - Then why don't we solve it?

- We? It's your problem.

- Oh? You mean you see me at night just to make love?

- Hey, is that so bad? (water trickling)

- Don't you understand that I want to be with you?

Talk with you, laugh with you.

I want to live with you.

- The timing's wrong.

Wrong for everything except my work with Professor Lasky.

And two days is a lot of time.

- What is it about this city that keeps you here?

- I don't know.

I'm studying it.

It never ceases to amaze me.

And this time, we are onto something really big.

- Might be better if I go back to New York.

- She's right. It's time to leave.

To run away from this rotten place.

The centuries and the wickedness of the people who live here

have corroded it to the core.

From its womb have come forth blind monsters.

Go. Go now.

Flee the city, before evil

which is tired of hiding in the bows of the earth

decides to wake.

Leave before the sinister howls of the phantoms

engulf us all. (sinister laughter)

You're probably halfway.

This place is incredible.

Looks like a tomb. Pagan temple.

Skeletons and frescoes.

Steps leading to another room.

(eerie music)

I'm inside another vault now.

Something here that looks like an altar or a sarcophagus.

There's a figure on it.

Oh, and there's an inscription on the base.

(eerie music cont.)

(speaking Latin)

- [Marcus] Hey, there's something else.

- Christ, what's that? - I don't know.

- Looks like a dagger. Some sort of weapon.

(tense music)

(Marcus screams)

- Hi, buddy.

- At last.

- Feel better?

- So far...

so good.

- [Andrea] You probably passed out

from lack of oxygen down there.

When I pulled you out, you were pretty far gone.

- I owe you one.

- Yeah, I'll send you the laundry bill, okay?

- I'm sure you will.

- You did a good job, Marcus.

What you found may solve the mystery.

- And to the victor goes the prize.

- This is not a Christian symbol,

but something quite different.

It's like the mark left by the dagger on the victim

after the sacrificial blow.

So this discovery proves that the legend

is a fact.

- Frankly, I've never seen anything like this.

- What could it be?

A feline?

- I can't tell you right now.

It's gonna take time.

And I need more information,

which I don't have at the moment.

- Are you shitting me?

With just a bone splinter,

you can reconstruct the whole skeleton. Come on.

- Look, I got a lot of work to do.

- I'll be back the day after tomorrow. Okay?

- What makes you think I'll do it?

- Because you're dying of curiosity

just to know what kind of an animal it is too, right?

Now, go to work.

I'll see you.

- I have to admit that as an archeologist,

you're a good investment. (birds chirping)

- You got to the site very quickly, didn't you?

- Well, it wasn't too difficult.

You know, rumors spread quickly.

And even if you have been very lucky,

you still are the most capable and the best of us.

I have to admit, I envy you. I really do.

Archeology is still your only lover.

- It's a heavy lover.

- And an expensive one too.

I've been waiting for you to show what you found.

Shall we go?

Curious.

A sacrificial weapon.

Not very refined.

- They were a bloodthirsty lot.

Something...

something peculiar about them.

- You were always blessed with two things,

morals and luck,

but absolutely no imagination, my dear Professor.

- It's a pity your imagination

only serves to fuel your vice.

- And your digs.

Had we both stayed at the university,

you wouldn't have a penny to finance your excavations

and to possess things

like the one you are holding for the moment.
