We begin a dramatization of Joseph Conrad's epic novel Nostromo.

The setting is a mythical South American country, Costa Guana.

Time, end of the 19th century.

An age when American and European imperialism treated backwater countries like Costa Guana

as prizes ripe for the picking.

Nostromo has a huge cast of characters, but the most important figure,

the one that makes everything happen, is a silver mine.

It's the property of Charles Gould, a man obsessed.

Years before, when his father owned the mine, it was looted and ruined in a military coup.

Now, since geography is vital to the story, you should know that Costa Guana is divided

into two parts by an almost impassable mountain.

The mines on the side of the mountain, it faces down into the ramshackle town of Sulaco.

The silver comes down the mountain into Sulaco, gets put onto boats in the harbor, and shipped

out of the country.

The government, such as it is, is on the far side of the mountain.

Now an end, something like democracy breaks out over there and ends with military thugs

staging another coup.

The boss of Sulaco's Steve adores is John Batista Fidanza.

He's an Italian seaman who jumped ship in Costa Guana, liked it, and stayed.

Fiercely competent at whatever he does, he's now become the man everybody calls on for

help when there's trouble.

Nostromo, people call him.

In Italian it means our man.

Sulaco depends on Nostromo, and Nostromo is proud of his good name.

Maybe too proud, as we'll see tonight.

Our story begins with a flashback to a time when Charles Gould's father ran the mine.

In the year 1890, in the South American country of Costa Guana, its dictator, Guzman

Bento, is cleansing his land of foreigners.

And it's Gould's, my friend, rest in peace.
