[suspense music]
Sean, this is Jessie. Three divers are down at the rocks off Makapoo Point.
The victim was hit by a rogue wave and got smashed up against some rocks.
A couple of guys saw the victim go under
and were in after him as quickly as possible.
They were looking in the wrong place.
We're almost to Makapoo. I'll alert the Coast Guard to stand by.
There has been no sign of the victim, for over ten minutes.
Kekoa's in the water swimming a grid. I'm gonna join her.
Fire department's en route.
Roger that. We're about two minutes away.
[suspenseful music]
If he's been under ten minutes,
this might be a recovery, not a rescue.
Do you see anything yet?
I don't see anything.
Come on, keep looking!
[suspenseful music continues]
Wait! What about here?
Jessie! Kekoa! Dawn's spotted him.
[both panting]
[Dawn] He had the strangest look on his face. Almost a smile.
Yeah. It's weird how drowning victims sometimes do that.
[dramatic music]
No pulse. No breathing. Begin CPR.
One, two, three, four, five.
[Brian] Breathe.
[Newman] One, two, three, four, five.
I hate it when pressure on the chest forces the lungs to clear.
You get this false sense of hope. Makes you think he's alive.
Just because air is coming out doesn't mean he's breathing.
-How long has he been under? -Twenty minutes. Maybe longer.
[Newman] Five, breathe. One, two, three, four.
Okay. I need clear. I need clear.
[beeping]
-[Brian] No pulse. No breathing. -[Newman] Same here.
Everyone clear.
Come on...
[beeping]
-[Brian] No pulse. -[Newman] Same.
Alright, everyone clear!
Come on.
[beeping]
[Brian] No pulse, no breathing.
Alright, let's get him loaded.
[dramatic music]
-Okay, on you, Brian. -Ready, guys, on three. One, two, three.
[engine starting]
Only the doc can make the final call.
We're gonna work all the way to the hospital.
[Brian] I know you will.
[siren]
[dramatic music]
[opening theme song]
Hey, gang.
That drowning victim you pulled out came around. He's alive.
-What? -[Kai] I saw him.
-He's not even on life support. -That's not possible.
Then he wasn't under for 20 minutes.
Oh, yes, he was.
But there's no paralysis, no brain damage.
His blood gas is on the edge, but good enough,
gonna hold him over night, check for secondary drowning,
-and release in the morning. -Release him?
I'm telling you, I saw him. He's ready for beer and pizza right now.
There have been cases where people submerged
for long periods recovered.
Yeah, Newmie, but those are cases of extreme cold,
when trapped under ice,
the victims are young and in top physical condition.
In these waters, no way.
Something doesn't fit. I need to talk to him.
Wait, I'll go with you.
[upbeat music]
[Jessie] You've been pretty quiet.
C'mon, Kekoa, I can hear those wheels turning.
Well, I've just been thinking about how I hesitated
and how I let others take the lead.
Sounds like you've changed that, though.
I heard about the rescue. And you were in the lead.
Sean was about to bust, he was proud.
Well, I know and it was really great,
but I realize I hesitate about a lot of things. Actually, about everything.
You know, sometimes I feel like life is just passing me by.
Really?
Okay, Jessie, I'll be completely honest with you.
I've never had a real relationship like Nick and Allie,
because every time I meet a man, I put a wall up.
And I think to myself, okay, should I see him again?
If he gets to know me, will he like me?
And then when I hesitate, he either loses interest,
thinks I'm stuck up, or he leaves.
Jess, I'm a wreck.
I'm a complete and total misfit.
[laughs]
Yeah, look at you. You're falling apart.
You got no chance at love. No possibilities whatsoever.
You're a hopeless case.
You're like a walking country song. I feel really bad for you.
It's not funny.
It is funny. It's hysterical, because you are so beautiful.
Okay, look, let's treat this like any other training exercise.
Okay? What is it that Dawn always says? "๏ฟฝIt's about choice."๏ฟฝ Right?
So, I'm going to give you a bunch of different choices.
-I don't know about that, Jess. -Oh! No more hesitating.
Come on, it'll be fun.
[Jessie laughs]
-It'll be fun! -I don't know.
Oh, yeah, it will.
[dramatic music]
What do you know about shunting?
It's an involuntary response,
what the brain does when it's deprived of oxygen.
It shuts down what's not necessary to keep the organism alive.
If you didn't need your sense of taste or smell, the brain will shut them off,
stops pumping blood to the extremities.
And in the end, the brain will abandon the heart to preserve itself.
You sound like a doctor.
No. I'm just interested in the area.
So what happened to your patient, Doctor?
It was a fluke.
-No medical explanation? -No.
Would it be alright if we spoke with him?
-It's fine with me. -Thanks.
Steve, hi. This is Dawn Masterton. I'm Sean Monroe.
We're the lifeguards that pulled you out of the water.
We were wondering if we could talk about it.
Not much to say.
Do you realize how long you were under?
They told me 20 minutes.
Were you in an air pocket or find air somewhere?
You have any special training or anything?
-No. -Yoga?
[Sean] Long-distance running?
Steve, is there anything you can think of that would have enabled you to do this?
Guess I'm just lucky.
What do you remember after you went under?
[Steve] I was scared.
I knew I couldn't make it out by myself.
[Dawn] What do you hear?
[Steve] All I could hear was my heart.
Just pounding.
Then I didn't hear that anymore.
[Dawn] What do you see?
[Steve] It's bright.
Everything's so bright.
And sharp.
It's like I could count the scales on the fish.
[Dawn] Then what?
[Steve] Nothing.
I woke up here.
-I'm feeling kind of tired right now. -Sure. Thanks for your time.
Hey, thanks for saving my life.
[upbeat music]
Hey, Allie.
Ah, hi, Jess.
-How are you doing? -I'm fine.
You looked a little lost in thought.
[laughs lightly] I was.
Thinking about Nick?
Yeah. I miss him. I really do.
I need a favor.
What's that?
It's Kekoa. She might need some back up.
Sure, anything.
No. I'm just not up for being that social.
Oh, c'mon. It'll be fun.
We'll go and give Kekoa a little on the job training.
Jess, I love what you're trying to do for Kekoa,
but the last thing I need right now is to spend an evening
with some accountant from Cleveland asking me, '๏ฟฝWhat's your sign, babe?'
[Jessie laughs]
Okay. What about doing part of the training exercise?
What part?
The part that every woman needs when she's in a funk.
Shopping!
-Wanna know why? -Why?
It'll get your heart pumping and your blood flowing.
Besides, Kekoa needs it and you need it.
And I, quite possibly, need it most of all.
Oh, okay. For you and for Kekoa...
I'll shop.
Yes!
[upbeat music]
[Jessie] Here we are, Ladies. The Hilton Hawaiian Village.
So, what are we looking for? I mean, specifically.
Anything. As long as it's sexy.
I promise, it's going to make you guys feel better
-I hope so. -Me too.
And this looks like the perfect place to start.

[shouting and laughing]
[upbeat music]
[Dawn] Your interest in this area surprises me.
Why, you're interested.
Yeah, it's my field.
Dawn, I pull people out of all kinds of water.
I've seen them live and unfortunately I've seen a few die.
But I have never seen anyone underwater near 20 minutes
and live to tell about it.
And this guy comes out of it like it was a joy ride.
Maybe it was.
What do you mean, maybe it was?
It might've been an experience that led to joy.
No, wait a second. I've heard of the joy of cooking, but the joy of dying?
The fundamental fact is he underwent a physical experience
that he'd never felt before.
A great trauma, a shock in its most extreme form,
which, if you have an open mind, is exactly what happens when you're born.
You leave one physical environment,
the only physical environment you've ever known,
and enter into a completely different physical world.
Except, for some unknown reason, this man, Steve Reiser,
he was forced, or he chose to return.
And you think that's why he was smiling?
I think he was put in a physical place
where his brain had no other choice but to accept its new environment,
to redefine all the sensations the body was feeling.
To convert the remaining energy and direct it into one single channel.
Mind over matter.
Consciously or unconsciously, what the mind truly controls.
And Steve Reiser, he, he could be a key to a major breakthrough.
He was under water for 20 minutes.
If we could find out how, think of what that could do for us.
[upbeat music]
[Jessie] Alright! This is our training area.
I don't think this is how to find the man of my dreams.
Ah, the point of this exercise is not to find Mister Right.
It's not?
No. It's to find "Mister Interesting To Spend Some Time With."
Okay. So how do we do that?
Lifeguard training. Remember how we make the rescue on the sand?
Observation, evaluation and anticipation.
Exactly.
Those two, over there.
[Kekoa] The ones who haven't taken their eyes off us?
[Jessie laughs]
The one on the right's sort of cute.
They are absolutely not the men we want to meet.
I don't know, they look sort of interesting.
On the beach, you can tell everything you need to know about a person
by looking at them.
It's the same thing here.
So, using your lifeguard instincts, tell us about the guy you think is cute.
[Kekoa] Oops. He's married, here on a convention,
has two, no, three kids.
-[Allie] Excellent. -He's out. Next.
[Kekoa] The one on the left is a salesman.
Check out the Omega Constellation.
[Jessie laughs]
This is so fun.
What do you suppose they're here for?
MCI Dial 1-800 COLLECT?
[laughing] They're here doing exactly what we're doing.
Trying to make a connection.
We could make a game show out of this.
I want the one second from the left.
Allie! We're supposed to be here for Kekoa.
Oh, I'm sorry, Kekoa. You go first, but I want the one second from the left.
Ah!
Jessie, which one do you want?
Stop hesitating. Just pick one.
Okay, the one next to Allie's.
Mm, good choice. They're together.
That means you guys can share a cab to wherever it is you might be going
when the cruise is over.
So what's the secret to getting their attention?
Exactly what you're doing. Relaxing, being yourself.
That's what attracting them. You.
Me?
Mm... smile!
Not at me. To them. They're looking!
[gasps]
My god, he's coming over. What do I do?
Anything but hesitate.
-Hi. -Hi!
-My name's Robert. -Kekoa.
Oh, this is my friend, Lucien.
-[Lucien] Hi. -[Allie] Hi.
[techno music]
[relaxing music]
A catamaran's over-turned.
Since we're the nearest, we've been asked to respond. Get who you need.
-Captain. -I'm sorry, Miss. This is an emergency.
My two friends and I are lifeguards. We might be able to help.
[people screaming]
[suspenseful music]
[Allie] Okay, ladies, there's not much choice. We've got work to do.
[Allie] Kekoa, are you joining us?
[people screaming]
Kekoa!
-I'll explain later. -Oh! Well, I hope so.
-I'd like a set of those myself. -Yeah, me too!
[suspense music]
Help!
-[Jessie] I got the first one. -[Kekoa] I'll try over there.
[Allie] I'm right behind you.
Ah!
[Girl] Help me, please!
[coughing and screaming]
Calm down. I got you.
Try to relax. Let me do the work, okay?
[Allie] Okay, calm down. I got you.
I'm a lifeguard. Relax. Relax, you're gonna be okay.
[girl coughing]
It's alright. It's okay. How many of you are there?
Ah, ah, six. There are six of us.
-Are you sure only six? -Yeah.
Alright, alright. Relax. Calm down. It's okay.
[Jessie] We're almost there!
[Jessie] Just relax, okay?
Alright, here. Hang onto the boat.
Ah!
[Allie] Jessie! The one over there!
[Jessie] I'm here! I've got her!
Here, hold on and try and relax.
It's okay! I'm a lifeguard, okay? Just relax.
Relax. I'm gonna take you over to the boat, okay?
You're gonna be okay.
[Kekoa] keep calm, I'm almost there.
Help me, please!
Easy. Kekoa!
-[Kekoa] You're okay. -[Jessie] You got her?
[Kekoa] Yeah.
[Jessie] You got her?
Hold on to the boat.
Deep breaths, try and relax.
We're gonna be okay.
[girls panting and coughing]
[Girl] I don't know what happened.
Thank you so much.
There's a bus over there to take all of you.
So, do tell. What is up with the garter belt?
-Confidence. -Really?
Yeah. My mother taught me that.
She said, "wear a garter belt and you'll feel like you own the world."
Huh, really?
-Hi. -Hey.
Sorry the cruise was interrupted.
Are you kidding? That rescue was great. You're sensational.
Thank you!
[Captain] Hey!
Finally get you alone for a moment.
Fill out these accident reports, sign them and I need them back asap.
Ah, sure. I'd be glad to.
That's the most important line, there.
That's your address and phone number.
Oh, well, I guess I should fill these out.
Missing something?
Thank you.
[cheerful music]
[suspense music]
[beeping]
[heart monitor beeping]
[breathes deeply]
[monitor beeping]
[slow music]
Have a good one!
Sean, hold on. You to sign these before I can send them.
Ah, can't it wait until tomorrow?
[Newman] Ah, no.
Jake's gonna take them on his way to the tower. He's leaving by six.
Alright, alright.
[slow music]
-Okay. -[Newman] Thanks.
Yeah.
Whoa, whoa, whoa Sean, hold on a second.
Come on back. Ah, I just got three more. Thanks.
[suspense music]
Okay, anything else?
-No. That's good for now. -Alright.
Dawn! Dawn!
Dawn, Dawn!
-[Dawn] What? -Are you out of your mind?
No.
It's an exercise I learned in India.
It's not dangerous.
Ah... You scared me half to death.
I set it up for you.
It's an emerging technique. Do you want to try it?
And what am I supposed to learn?
I don't know. That's for you to find out.
[Sean laughs]
I feel a little silly.
It will pass.
What I want you to do is take a couple of deep breaths,
lay down in the water and I'm going to hold you down. Okay?
Alright.
[breathes deeply]
[relaxing music]
[relaxing music]
Ah!
You alright?
[gasping] Yeah, I'm fine.
How was it?
I don't know.
I just know I don't ever want to do that again.
Whoo...
[action music]
Got them down, come on!
[woman screaming]
There's two more down!
[crying] Help me!
Hold your breath. We're gonna swim out, okay?
Okay.
One, two...
[suspense music]
Get me out, help!
[Sean] The boat's shifting. Look out, it's rolling.
Dawn's still in there.
[Dawn groans]
She's trapped inside.
Get me an ax!
Dawn, we're gonna get you out, okay?
[Sean] Dawn!
Dawn! Pound on the hull and let me know you're okay.
Where's that ax? I need it now!
[blows in the distance]
[Newman] Hurry, Sean, she's not gonna make it.
[groans with effort]
[Sean] Easy, easy, easy.
Her legs got pinned in the hatch. That's it.
[Sean] Get her up on the beach. Let's go!
No pulse, no breath. Beginning CPR.
I'll go get the O2.
One, two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five.
Come on, Dawn. One, two, three, four, five.
C'mon, you can do it. Come back to us, Dawn. Do it, c'mon.
Three, four, five.
Come on, Dawn, come on! Come on!
Two, three, four, five, come on.
That was you. I know you're still there. Now c'mon, Dawn. C'mon.
Four, five.
[Sean] Come on!
Okay, get the oxygen. Easy breaths, Dawn. Now, c'mon. Nice easy breaths.
[Sean] Good girl. Come on.
[Sean] Slow, easy breaths. Easy breaths, Dawn.
[people chattering]
[Sean] Nice, easy breaths, Dawn.
That's it, girl. That's it, girl.
Welcome back.
[with difficulty] I relaxed, and I gave into it.
I let my body shunt,
because I knew you were on the outside, and I believed it was possible.
Maybe that's all it takes to survive,
is to believe that it's possible.
[sighs]
