We're losing gold. My biggest worry is that gearbox.

Shane's been forced out of retirement.

It's time to fire it up and show us that it works.

But his machinery refuses to come back to life.

but we want to be able to know what we're working in

and the significance of it.

Jacqui Buzetti and Andrew Leahy

have come to witness something that few outsiders have ever seen.

Through their respectful treatment of this land,

Jacqui and Andrew built a relationship

with its traditional owners

who today want to share with them a long-lost Outback treasure.

How did you find this place? My big brothers,

Brad and Johnny.

They found it? They found this.

Oh, wow.

Welcome to Magnificent.

This is our teaching, our ways. That's a barramundi.

Yep. And that's a possum on top.

So they painted this on the wall

to let you know you get barra here and you get possum here.

All the signs around you, everything that you get from the plants,

and the resources, I just love all of that.

We know now what to look for on other parts of the station.

And if we come across anything like that,

we'll let the traditional owners know.

Jacqui and Andrew are pushing into untouched gold hunting ground

in the valleys of Fish Creek.

We're going for gold that no-one's ever been near before.

But exploring this isolated corner of Far North Queensland

has been far more challenging than Jacqui and Andrew expected.

It's there, we just need to get to it.

After building a road to the gold...

..bush fires forced the duo to abandon the area.

It's about time those fires finished.

I'm glad we're gonna get a shot at Fish Creek now.

Where we're headed has been cut off from everyone for so long

it's our best shot. Yeah, hopefully a bit of luck comes our way,

it's what we need.

Well, this is looking good.

This is exactly what we want to see.

When you're in a real gorgy part of the creek like this,

it doesn't take much for the gold to pull up.

The dried-up creek acts like a natural sluice box.

When flood waters wash through,

cracks in the bedrock act like riffles,

trapping the heavy gold.

(HIGH-PITCHED TONE) Hey, there we go.

A signal. Not a real strong one, but there's something there.

Oh, there it is. Excellent.

Nice flat little piece of gold.

That's bedrock gold all over. Really water-worn.

We've got a long way to go to reach 50 ounces,

but every one of those will help.

Hopefully Jacqui's onto a bit as well.

This whole year has just been delay after delay.

We should be halfway through our season target

at this point in the season and we're really, really behind.

So I just got a target.

So, we'll see. (DETECTOR HUMS)

We really need some gold.

I just can't get it out and I picked up

a few little ones just above it so I'm pretty sure it's gold.

I will grab this little crowbar so we can pry it out,

and these guys should make the job a lot easier for us.

We've found about 15 ounces throughout this area here

and that stump is just right smack bang in the middle of it.

So we need it out to find the gold that's underneath it.

It's gotta be a massive nugget holding it in place.

Well, what are we gonna do?

We need the big excavator in there, but it's a helluva hike.

It'd be tramming it for, I don't know, a couple of hours.

Or we try something that's a little bit closer

and we save a few bucks on diesel.

This stump has got to go. It has given me blisters.

It has caused me grief. This stump, it just needs to go.

It's got to go. Well, I'm sick of hearing about it

so just to end it, we'll get the exci. We'll get the big exci out here.

Kitchen. The wall is coming apart.

This is what we've got, dear.

Yup. (SIGHS) It's gonna be tough.

After losing their home,

Brett Brumby and Kat Dubberley

were forced to move into a gold-mining ghost town.

They've been desperate to find enough gold

from their 30-hectare Dead Horse Lease

to get their lives back on track.

What have you done? We've got so much to do with the house

and you've gone and spent money that we don't have.

Well, this didn't actually cost us any money.

The arrival of a 25-tonne excavator

is keeping their hopes of finding a life-changing haul of gold alive.

This is gonna get us the gold that we need to get you your kitchen.

We're not close to our gold target yet.

Er...

It's a bit of a concern.

We've got hardly any money coming in.

But that machine is a real game changer for us.

Kat's still getting used to the bigger excavator,

but, er, she seems to be doing all right.

We've got a fairly gnarly bit of creek coming up here.

This is absolutely terrifying.

You're gonna rock a little bit coming through here

and she might sink or slide a little bit.

Ohh!Come on, dear, we've got faith in you.

Oh, my goodness.

Oh, and I'm back on solid ground.

There's nothing stopping me now from getting that stump.

This is the last-ditch effort to try and get this stump out.

Just take your time, and have a little bit of power on as well.

During periods of heavy rainfall,

this creek fills with fast-moving water,

carrying gold-bearing sediment.

Variations in the creek act like natural riffles.

Brett and Kat think the roots of this tree

have slowed the water enough

to give the heavy gold time to settle in and around its roots.

Let's see what we can find. Yep. There you go.Awesome.

This is the moment of truth to see if we've got the big nugget that I was hoping for.

I just keep on telling Brett there's gotta be something under there.

So the pressure's kind of on me now

if there's no gold and we've just tracked the excavator over,

So we just really need this to pay off.

(HIGH-PITCHED TONE) Well, that's a nice noise.

I mean, we're finding gold in this area,

but we're still getting a lot of stuff that isn't gold.

All right, it's in my hand. (HIGH TONE)

Oh, I can see it right there! Whoa!

That's a massive one!

That's amazing. That's the biggest one yet, I think.

You know what? That's such a relief, cos it means we're on a lucky strike here.

Copy, Amy. How you going?

Yeah, absolutely.

We have a high target. Shane's got a big wet plant

that he's bringing in at the moment. Once he gets that up and running,

then we can put much more dirt through it

and actually get more gold out of the ground.

So we're not just relying on finding nuggets by detecting,

we've actually got a big operation going and getting as much gold as we can.

Last week, Kate Dundas lured

family friend and fifth-generation miner Shane Calegari

out of retirement with the promise of big gold

on Messenger's Patch.

With the help of fellow geologist, Amy Doherty,

Kate proved Messenger's Patch

to be worthy of the big machines.

Just shy of four grand. That's not a bad effort.

Kate convinced me there's gold here.

I have got all the gear.

She helped me out last season. I suppose I owe her.

AMY: (LAUGHS) What the hell is that, Kate?

Oh, my God.

Kate, this is Toddy. Hi, Todd. How are you?

This is Amy. Toddy's my right-hand man at work.

This is the fabulous bit of gear I've got.

I know it's not quite completed. It's in pieces!

Kate, I told you from the beginning,

I am not throwing good money after bad!

There's nothing wrong with it. Yeah, all right.

But if you got it for nothing, you got your money's worth.

That's hurtful, Kate. (TODD CHUCKLES)

Yeah, all right. You've got two days to get that thing working.

But time is money, Shane.

Well, at the yard I've got a thousand-odd litres of water.

I've got a little sluice, and you girls being

the great geologists you are can come and find me the best posi's

where the gold is. All right, well...

Come on, Toddy, let's go. We've been abused enough.

How's it going, Marko? Can you come and give us a lift, please?

Yeah, no worries, Shane. On my way. Okay, thank you, Marko.

A very well-respected prospector's coming here, named Mark Wells.

He's gonna lift this off. It weighs about three tons.

The problem is that the weight of the piece at the back there,

the hopper it's called,

it's a lot heavier than the rest of it.

So what happens is, it can tilt over.

So what he's gonna try and do is get the weight equal.

Chains aren't long enough. We're just gonna have to see...

..how it goes.

Just guide me in so I'm in the middle.

This takes a bit of experience, so it's very important they get this right.

Come around. If they don't get this right,

the thing's gonna pivot and it'll break the sluice. It'll be the end of it.

(CREAKING)

Wait! Wait! Hang on!

No way. Yeah! (LAUGHS)

Oh! Ha-ha-ha! Yes! Oh, Andy, look at that!

That's a chunk. Oh, feel that weight.

That's a half ounce easy, mate.

Hey, watch out, there's a snake there.

A really serious snake. Really fast.

And super deadly.

The Inland Taipan's highly toxic venom

can kill a healthy adult in less than an hour.

Jacqui and Andrew carry a snake bite bandage

which delays the effects of the venom.

But without immediate medical intervention,

the chances of surviving a bite are slim.

Second deadliest snake in the world.

He's a big Taipan too.

We're a long way from any sort of help.

If one of those gets us, it's all over.

He can go that way, I'm going this way.

Oh, yeah, there's some bedrock.

You ripper! That's what I'm looking for.

(HIGH-PITCHED TONE) Hey, that sounds nice.

See how we went.

(HIGH-PITCHED TONE) All right, something in the pile. Scoop it out now, eh.

Look at that, sitting in there!

Excellent little nug.

That's the stuff.

Your ounces of gold build up really quick

when you're getting five or six gram nuggets like this.

That's a $500 nugget right there.

If and when you get onto a run of chunky gold,

it just keep coming. All right, keep finding them.

Okay, I got a target just in this sheet of bedrock here.

But that's the type of spot we've been pulling them out from in this area.

God, this stuff's hard.

It's so hard to get it... Argh!

It's now in. Now we can start assembling it. Then I can get some gold.

KATE: Now we have a wet plant, we need to find an area

that has the high concentration of gold.

Okay, so this is where we are now.

So this is where the nugget was. All our nuggets from last week

are all along here. And so we can see

this drainage channel coming through which is exactly where we thought we would find the gold.

We've got our mini sluice here. We'll just put a little material,

get it through in the same way a big wet plant works.

Our plan is to sample a number of different areas

across the pads that we've cleared.

All right, so we need to pick some spots for samples, then,

for this mini sluice. All right, let's go.

Off we go.

To justify the expense of running Shane's full-size wet plant,

Kate and fellow geologist Amy

need to find pay dirt with a high yield of fine gold.

All right, you carry that. You gonna be all right with that?

It should be all right. Okay.

We've got the water going. It's looking good.

I see you've got me here for the muscles, eh, Kate? (LAUGHS)

The material's gonna come down here and be washed.

It's not getting clogged up anywhere.

It's giving any gold a bit of a chance to settle to the bottom, which is what we want.

It's looking really nice. I've got a lot of material coming through here.

So that's our first sample through.

I can't see anything at the moment.

I was really hoping so see a few more shining nuggets.

It might just mean that this isn't the best sample area.Yep.

Just got to keep trying. Yep.

Now this is an old bicycle rack.

All this stuff I've got here has come from recycling places.

God, this is about as tight as me old man's wallet.

I can see those girls over there. I can feel their eyes on me.

They're making me nervous.

They're geologists and they're expecting

to get a yield back on their expertise.

Trouble is, I hope I know what I'm doing.

It's up to me to get this up and going.

But my biggest worry is that gearbox.

I don't know whether it's gonna turn or not turn.

I've just got to assemble it as quick as I can. That's all I can do.

(HIGH-PITCHED TONE) Oh, there's a signal!

It's, um, kind of sounding everywhere.

That's probably 40 grams.

I think we need to dig this whole area out

We had to shift to the ghost town when Kat lost her job.

It's very important to have someone like Kat in your life

because she's just a joy to be around

and you wouldn't hang around, you wouldn't live out here

unless you had someone that just made your day every time you seen 'em.

The Brumbies' work plant is supplied by ponds

that continually recycle its water.

Kat feeds the trommel with material from around the stump.

As it spins, it washes and breaks down the pay dirt.

The resulting slurry runs down the sluice box

where the heavier gold particles are caught in the riffles.

We're getting through this dirt pretty well. It's so handy

having Chris out here, and it makes my life a lot easier

because I can just focus on feeding it

and not have to worry about everything else.

Kat seems to be doing really well. Friendship's amazing out here.

Try to help each other out as much as possible when we can.

After all the battles to get here, it has absolutely paid off

and it's been worth the heartache.

Stuck right down in that bedrock crack there.

I thought I saw it.

Here he is. Here's another one. Straight out of that grey clay again.

This is gonna save mine and Jacqui's season.

Another step closer to getting that 50 ounces.

Dug that many pieces out of this hard bedrock now,

it's starting to wear us down. But I'm not gonna stop.

(HIGH TONE) Ooh, that sounds pretty big.

Okay. So, the target's just in here, which is a pretty good spot.

And these sort of traps here are great for gold.

Holy crap! Ha-ha!

Look at that. That's the biggest piece I have found this season.

It's probably an ounce. Could be over an ounce.

It's just unreal. This is the type of gold we were looking for at Fish Creek and it's here.

There's no water coming through. No.

Settling pond's just run out of water.

Is the pump on up at the tanks? It should be running.

It all should be running. I'm gonna have to go check it out.

This isn't what we need. We're meant to be ticking along smoothly, especially with Brett not here.

We're definitely not getting enough water to clean these rocks.

Where that dirt is, that's where all the fine gold likes to hang around

and that's what the whole idea of a trommel is,

is to clean the rocks.

They should be coming out crystal and not muddy.

It's not gonna give us a really good read

to actually know what's in this stuff if we're not cleaning it properly.

We're losing gold, basically.

So, um, this is Gwalia.

It was a thriving town at one stage,

but when the Sons of Gwalia mine shut down,

within two weeks it was just dead. Everything was abandoned.

Everyone racked off and went elsewhere.

It's a little bit heartbreaking. It's pulling the community apart in two seconds flat.

Welcome to the ghost house and the kitchen project.

Kat hasn't been allowed in here. It's a bit of a secret project for her.

It's a five-hour round trip to the local hardware store

so everything that I've done is all second-hand materials.

(DRILLING)

It's cool living in an old ghost house.

But in the same respect, it's a nightmare to work on 'em.

I have to be a little sneaky getting the gas man out to hook the gas up.

Yeah, I think this is a win.

So, obviously with got a bit of an issue up at the plant with water.

And this would be the main cause. I'd say the pump's off.

It happens occasionally. It's the generator

just looking after itself. Obviously there was a bit of an issue with the fuel going through,

or air bubble through the pipe and it's just shut itself off.

So, hopefully it's as easy as switching it back on and...

(PUMP STARTS)

And this is right in the middle of that alluvial channel,

which is where we're finding the most gold.

That's a great result. We're gonna take this off,

With half the season already behind them,

the Brumbies need to step up production

if they want to hit their ambitious 50-ounce season target.

So that's four grams a ton. That's pretty good dirt.

That was a massive prospect. When we'd had to wait so long

to get in there, then when we got the chance

it as just go hard or go home. Absolutely.

It's good to make the most of it. I've been stressing about how much gold we've got so far

this whole time. I reckon we need
