We can't get caught in a fire somewhere like this.

The problem is we've pushed a road in to get here,

so we know there's no other tracks out of here.

If we get stuck on the wrong side of fires, we're in big trouble.

where all the debris fuelling the flames has already been burnt.

set by traditional owners who serve as rangers here,

protecting the environment.

In the past we've had a lot of wildfires out here,

so this is the way that we control it now.

So we do a lot of our creek boundaries, road boundaries.

That way when a fire does come in we've got somewhere to stop it.

If you can give it a couple of days, that'd be awesome,

but we have burnt Mount Madden... Oh, really?

For thousands of years

traditional owners used fire to manage the land

in a practice called "cool burning".

Small fires are set and carefully controlled.

Cool burns preserve the trees that give shade

while burning the thick underbrush,

removing the tall grass and debris

that, left unchecked, fuels catastrophic wildfires.

I'm not real impressed about having to head in to Madden.

I want to get the job done that we're here to do, and that's search Fish Creek.

But we did find some good gold in Madden last year,

so we can probably put some good gold away.

Oh, this is sort of the area we want to be in, isn't it?Yeah.

I think we should get our gear out and get started.

Well, Mount Madden's pretty much as good as new ground now.

A log still smouldering.

With all that long grass gone it's going to be way better.

The side of this hill last year was 4ft-high grass,

and I really wanted to detect here but couldn't.

But this year it's gonna be great, be perfect for us.

So, this season Andy and I have put that 50oz target back on.

It's a big target and it's a fair amount of gold,

but we don't get paid wages.

We get paid in gold, so if we don't find it,

then it's a bust for us as well.

Still a lot of heat coming out of that one.

These hollow logs, it doesn't matter if they're lying down or standing up.

Even if they run underground, they can still burn for weeks.

The fire will get in the hollow and actually work like a chimney

and just slowly smoulder its way through these things.

Yeah, they can re-ignite fires.

They can leave hot spots underground for us, too.

We just gotta be a bit mindful that there are plenty of dangers around

after a fire, as well.

You're more guaranteed to find gold in a gully than you are on the side of a hill,

but the reason I'm on the side of a hill today

is because of all the specimen gold we found last year.

Chasing specimen gold on the side of the hills

can pay off in a big way.

It's the sort of place where you can hit a kilo or two in a patch.

This looks good here,

cos you've got two little gullies just coming into this main gully.

It's always worth swinging over where these two connect.

I wouldn't have been able to get in here-

BRAD: I've got the new loader coming in.

This loader is gonna make a massive difference to what we're doing.

The small loader's been bloody great,

but this thing is three times the size.

Essentially it means we can work three times quicker,

so we can lay our pads quicker, we can move a lot more ground.

I think we're going to smash it out this week, I really do.

I haven't actually told anyone about this,

so a bit of a surprise.

Either the wife's going to be impressed

or very angry at me, so we're about to find out.

the McGhies gambled on new equipment.

I've always wanted to crush a lot of this dirt,

and now I've got this massive crusher here

I should be able to get the stockpiles crushed down

and through the dry blower.

Now Brad is doubling down

with the addition of a massive 30-tonne, 350-horsepower loader,

and to run the expanded operation,

Wendy's sons Danny and first-time gold-prospector Rory

are on site to lend a hand.

More family, more hands on deck is better for everyone.

WENDY: So, what's the plans? DANNY: I've got an idea.

Since you've got the new loader, what if we take the old loader and run the dry blower?

And that gives you a chance to go with Mum,

push some pads with the new loader, and detect.

I feel like you need more training, you know?

If you break it, it's gonna cost me a lot of money.

I'm fairly confident in myself that I'll be able to run it,

and I can run Rory through the ropes of running the loader.

There is a new area I'd like to push, but I'll tell you what -

So, my expertise, like, what I've been doing

is blast-hole drilling for the past year-and-a-bit.

Basically what we're doing here, looking for gold, but on a much bigger scale.

This is my first time actually operating a loader.

Pretty nervous, but I reckon I'll get the hang of it.

Forward. Steady.

(INDISTINCT INSTRUCTIONS)

Tiny bit more. Teeny bit more.

Yeah, right there. Perfect.

To retrieve the gold, pay-dirt is loaded into the hopper,

then the material falls onto riffle trays.

Compressed air is blown through from underneath,

shaking the trays and blowing the lighter material away,

leaving the gold trapped in the riffles.

This is looking great. I'm happy with it.

So, everything's running smoothly so far.

You know, we came here a lot of years ago with the small loader.

We couldn't cut through the ground properly, so we gave up.

I've always wanted to get back here, because there could be a lot of gold here.

This loader is absolutely huge compared to the other one.

It just opens up a whole new level for us.

Take it easy. Yeah, stop.

We're chasing this quartz vein, but it's not been easy.

It started off nice and chunky and fat,

and it's skinned down to basically a couple of inches.

It's very difficult to follow.

Paul's back in the picture this week.

Last week he was off chasing his own little side hustles,

but from what he said,

sounds like we're not in the picture for that.

It leaves us in a sticky situation.

Yeah, we're still chasing a 1,000oz target for the season, and we're miles behind...

..so I'm looking at another project.

I'm waiting on some sample assays that I've taken to come in.

If they're in my favour,

then I'm going to have to leave Alex and Mel to it

and just go chasing, you know, a bigger payday,

cos this, at the moment, isn't cutting it.

I need this for my family. We've got bills to pay.

Bills don't stop.

It's been a bit tense finding out that Paul's looking at his own projects

that don't involve us.

It's a bit disappointing that he's kind of gone off and...

The reality of the situation is we've only got a kilo on the table,

so only 30oz, and that's just not good enough.

It's just not paying all our bills.

So what do we need to actually balance the books again?

Mel and Alex struggled to run their operation a man down.

So, it's just the two of us.

to get their season back on track

and to keep the team from going bust.

We can't keep going on like this,

or, you know, we're going to have to decide

and that basically comes down to the fact that we're not producing.

Well, this quartz is snaking all over the place.

metals and minerals exist in a fluid state.

As they move up through the Earth's crust

they cool and solidify.

Because of their complementary molecular composition,

gold and quartz are often found side by side in quartz veins.

Well, we can crush a bit up and put it in the pan, see if it is carrying.

No, we won't pan some up.

Why is that?We don't need to.

I can see visible gold in this.

It's got heaps in it.

That's a good sign. That means it's super rich, but only narrow.

The only thing that'll make this pay is if there's a lot of it.

and I'm way up on the side of the hill,

but any watercourse is a good place to look.

It's starting to get pretty steep and slippery.

Once the grass is gone,

there's nothing holding the dirt or the rocks in place any more,

so it's pretty easy to have a slide now.

Just got to be careful when you get on that steep ground.

This is just getting way too steep to work.
