That's about as beautiful as it gets. There's got to be gold here.

Alan and Salty's journey takes them

deep into the Pilbara region of Western Australia,

searching high and low for undiscovered gold.

Look at the size of that thing! Oh-ho-ho-ho!

This here is what prospectors dream of.

I've found gold nuggets in this area.

Those gold nuggets have come from somewhere.

So there's every chance there's a reef running through.

Down a team member, the Gold Devils search frantically

for a new source of gold...

Nothing. That was the best-looking quartz, not one spec!

..before their wash plant comes to a grinding halt.

It's a bit of a collection that we've made over a few trips at a time.

This is the grinding patch. They would have used them

to grind up seeds. So basically, a mortar and pestle, you know?

This represents everything right here in one circle, you know?

So, here we've got some spearheads here.SALTY: Really?

We could be touching 3,000-year-old artefacts here.

If you think it's something, possible artefact, put it down

and just head in the other direction, basically.

Majority of time they'd have slept here. They'd be camped up around here.

When you got all these trees to slow down the wind.

This whole big place here is just riddled with 150-plus grinding patches.

There's one right here, look. Can you feel it's smooth?

I would not have picked that until you pointed that out. They're everywhere along here, man.

Biggest indication of multiple families out here, you know. So, down here

is the creek. That's where the main water source was for them mob.

So this here, even though it hasn't rained in months,

it's still always going to have fresh water.

Last time we came out here, the water was over this rock. Really?Yeah.

You've always got water underneath, so it's always gonna have a bit of water, no matter what.

We brought you guys out here so you know what to look out for.

We need to be getting three and a half, four ounces a week

to hit that target, mate.

Uh... And I think this is a good place for us to make that happen.

What's washed down here over the years come off those clips.

I want to get down the other side there. It's such a vast area.

Beautiful breakaway country that looks very promising.

I have the fortunate job of jumping in the water this time.

I've got this hookah diver, so it's gonna allow me

to not just rely on my breath hold.

I can stay under for as long as I want, really.

It's like scuba diving, but without the tanks.

Under that water is icy.

Fingers crossed, we find some gold in here.

It's awesome. It's gonna move some dirt, definitely.

BRAD: Yeah, it's a beast, eh?

Yeah, that's great. So how much is this gonna cost us?

With the crusher here for a day, and transport here and back,

it's about ten grand. Ten grand? That's a lot of money.

That's just over there ounces,

about half of what we've found this season already.

We can't run the dry blower without crushing the material. All the gold's trapped in rock,

so we have to crush it to run it through the blower and capture that gold.

Yeah, I hope it works. There's only one way to find out, eh?

Yep. We're gonna have to take a risk.

Yous can get all that going, and me and Bailey are gonna go detecting.

This is pretty exciting.

I've always wanted to crush a lot of this dirt

and now's the perfect opportunity. I've got this massive crusher

so I should be able to get either of these stockpiles crushed down

and through the dry blower.

May as well go big or go home, I reckon.

We can run it through a crusher and just basically break all the gold out of it,

then run it through the dry blower. How small do you want to get it?

Five millimetres or less would be great.

We'll break all that up. Yeah.

What a lot of the prospectors do around here is

they hit this calcrete level and they stop.

I always believed there was gold under the calcrete and in the calcrete itself.

Oh, my God! Yeah, baby!

That's what dreams are made of right there.

With a new source of gold-rich ground,

the McGhies called in Wendy's son, Danny,

and brad's father, Max, to lend a hand.

But they hit a roadblock -

the pay dirt was too coarse for the dry blower.

That stuff's pretty thick and it won't go through the screen, it just sits on top of it.

Unfortunately, to get the gold out of the calcrete

you need some sort of crushing plant.

Throw that first bucket in and we'll kick her off.

Righto, mate. Coming in now.

At the heart of the 1.4 million dollar crushing machine

is a cone that spins off-centre against a fixed bowl,

crushing the material as it falls into a narrowing gap.

The upper frame can be lifted

to vary the size of the end product.

(ALARM WAILS)

Just hold up. It's just choking up straight away.

Oh, really?

That's a problem.

There's a bit too much moisture in it

so it's patty-caking all the fines together.

So that's why we're getting all these slabby bits here. As I tighten up and get it choked,

that's just slamming it together and doing that.Yep.

I can open it up more...

But then it's gonna come out bigger anyway. It's gonna come out bigger,

but you're gonna end up better off. You're still gonna break up some of that bigger stuff.

There's no point closing it up too tight and patty-caking all your fines.Yep.

Just trying to find a sweet spot.

Try to get it as tight as I can without it doing that

and then we'll just have to leave it at that.

We're probably not gonna get it down to the five mil we wanted,

but we'll get it close to it.

Brad's been wanting to crush the dirt under the calcrete

for so long. It's definitely a risk.

Nothing's guaranteed up here.

We're about a third of the way through the season

and we've found just over seven ounces.

So, um, you know, our target is 25 ounces

so we've got a fair bit to find before then.

So essentially, what you're doing is you're shaking it

and all the heavy gold should sit to the bottom and you're washing out all the lighter material.

So this will tell us good enough.

And I've got to say, I've pretty much done it all on my own, cos Paul, he's been a no-show.

Yeah, where is he? He's gone off on a little side quest,

looking for, I think, another project.

We really need to start processing. Yep.

I've been going through all the finances

and, you know, the move was over $105,000.

So we really need to bring in, you know...Yeah.

We're behind. We're well behind. So what do we need to actually get,

well, balance the books again? We need another ten ounces.

So, about 30 grand.

Well, it's doable. I think I'd like to put a few more trenches in with the excavator.

OK. Sample, make sure we've got

a few areas with some rich pockets we can pull in and process.

It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Last time, the Gold Devils

shipped their 20-tonne processing plant, Lloyd,

360 kilometres from the Phoenix Project

to their new base of operations, the Fair Lady lease.

Now they need the gold to get them back in the black.

I don't think we're gonna make it tonight. It's cost a fortune today.

The only way we're gonna dig ourselves out is literally

by digging, finding the gold, get it processed,

get a pay day, get back in the black.

All right, this looks pretty good.

I found gold nuggets in this area.

Those gold nuggets have come from somewhere.

And there's old workings, so there's every chance

there's a reef running through here.

All the gold in this area has pretty much been held up in the quartz.

So there's narrow quartz reefs running all over the place.

Through the bedrock and, er, see if there's anything there.

Alex and Mel are chasing the old-timers' diggings,

looking for gold they've left behind.

During the gold rush, miners used hand tools

to dig shafts into gold-bearing quartz,

extracting millions of dollars of gold.

With the 380-horsepower,

46-tonne excavator,

Mel and Alex hope to capitalise

on what the old-timers missed.

see if there's anything of interest?

Oh, you've been busy. If you wouldn't mind doing some sampling,

and let's just see if we've got some gold. If we have,

I guess this is the character-building part of gold mining.

If you just gave up at the first hurdle,

then you'd have to be very lucky to ever find gold.

I know there are good quartz veins around here,

but the old-timers, they've done a really good job of digging them out.

Came in a hundred years ago, they got the easy stuff,

and now we've got to dig in between where they found it

and try and find something that was either missed or they never found,

which I've got to say is turning out to be quite a mission.

All right. What we're looking for is a nice quartz vein

running through. You can see the quartz there.Mm-hm.

Nice juicy stuff.

It's a lot of digging for nothing!

Oh, it's getting beyond disappointing.

That was the best looking quartz. Not one spec!

You know, Alex has been slaving away,

building the processing plant, and, you know, digging,

and we can't even get a spec of gold.

It's just really disheartening.

ALAN: Wow. Look at this country.

Alan and Salty have been given permission

by the traditional owners to prospect for gold

here in Mardudhunera country,

a land that Mardudhuni people have looked after

for over 50,000 years.

Ooh, what's that?

It's got a bit of an echo to it.

Jeez. Yeah, so I've got a magnet on here

to basically attract rubbish

and hot rocks, and for this all to be

attached to it like so

kind of makes me think that's a hot rock.

So a hot rock is basically just, um, a very high iron content rock

which gives you a signal.

Let's just see. I think it's this big rock here.

(HIGH-PITCHED TONE) Yeah, it is.

If it comes up to the magnet, we know it's a hot rock.

Just like that.

One hot rock.

Not a good start, but anyway, at least I know the detector's working.

This valley better be the one that changes things for us

cos we're very, very far behind on our season target.

It's, er, it's pretty tricky navigating

this water system. As soon as you start moving,

everything behind you clouds up and I was finding it difficult

to kind of get my buoyancy right

so I wasn't dragging on the ground and I wasn't floating up too much.

So I've had to, um, custom make a few rocks...

(CHUCKLES) ..a few rocks in the wetsuit

to get my buoyancy right, so when I'm cruising along

it's just my tippy-toes touching the bottom.

Over millions of years of erosion and flooding,

gold travels from its source to the lowest point in the valley,

making this creek the ideal location to look for gold.

(METAL DETECTOR HUMS)

I was underwater, mate, just... got a big signal,

and then all I saw was like that little spec on the top,

and I was just trying to wave it cos it's so silty. I could see when you walked out.

Wow! Then I turned it over, I was like, "Oh, my God!"

That is beautiful. I was shouting underwater.

ALEX: Well, so far, digging between the old workings is not working.

The old-timers, they were good

and they pretty much dug it all out.

But my plan now is go to either end of the old workings,

where they haven't dug, and basically take the next step

and see if we can get onto the stuff that's never been touched.

Oh, I think I heard a bit of quartz then on the bucket.

Sounds like scraping glass, so a good sign.

Oh, yeah, there it is!

There's that quartz vein.

If this is carrying gold, well, that's a game changer.

I'll picks some of the best rocks and I'll come up

and we'll see if, er, see if we've got the yellow stuff.

There you go. Oh, yeah, I can see it.

A couple of specs on the end right there.

That ticks a few boxes. There's tons and tons of that material down there.

If we can run 50 tons through, that should give us at least five ounces.

Well, if you're happy to stockpile more dirt to put through Lloyd,

I'm gonna go detecting and see if I can find some nuggets to add to the tally.

Working as a team can be tough, especially when

you've got a team member that's not around.

Looks like Paul's found a project and he's decided he wants that all for himself

and not part of the team. Makes it a bit harder for us.

The bills continue to pile up and we don't find any gold

or there's not enough of us here to be able to process,

then we're gonna have to pack everything up

and...and go home.

I always like to come down here after heavy rain

and just have a look. Sometimes it washes

a lot of stuff down here and the side of the wall collapses

and it breaks away gold.

The McGhies' dry blower, Mad Maxine,

slowly feeds the riffle trays with pay dirt and processes it

by forcing air between the riffles,

blowing the lighter material away,

leaving the heavier gold-rich material in the grooves.

Everything's running smooth.

We're just trying to get the belt feed right so we can just pump out some dirt.

Hey, Danny, you got a copy? Yep.

Do you just want to pan a bit of those tailings, mate?

Make sure we're not losing and gold, please.

So I'm looking through this to, um,

find if there's any gold that's gone through the tailings.

This is where we don't want to find any gold.

So I'm just checking it just to make sure that

the dry blower's doing its job properly and we're picking up everything.

Oh, no!

Brad, get down here. There's gold in the tailings.

You're kidding me!

I just did that pan and there's gold getting through.

You're kidding me. How much? It's a decent sized little rock.

We've potentially lost a heap of gold.

All right, let's just start from the beginning, try and work out what to do.

You know, I've just the crusher here

and that's cost me an absolute fortune. So,

the next process is to get it through this

and capture the gold. So if I can't do that,

then that was an absolute waste of time, waste of money.

Oh, look at that.

See there's gaps under here? Yeah, you can see them coming down.

So the gold is going underneath.

All the fine gold's just going underneath the riffles and just coming straight out.Yeah.

What are we going to do to fix that? We need to take all the riffles off

and seal it so it can't come out the bottom.

It's a sticky one side and it's just a bit of foam, so

what we'll do is, we'll squeeze that down

in between this and the screen itself

and hopefully that seals that gap. It's a bit of downtime

that we certainly don't need, but I'd rather have the downtime

and fix it properly than lose gold.

ALEX: The impactor has shut down and I don't quite know why.

(GROANS) There's the problem.

That should all be clear. Hopefully it hasn't burnt the motor out.

Just turned into mud and it's just cemented in there.

How will we know if the motor's burnt out?

Clear it out and see if the motor is responsive. If it isn't,

we know it's burnt out. It's the last thing we need right now.

The plan is to wash the impact crusher out,

but there's not enough water getting through.

What I'm putting together here, just another hose.

Connect on, feed into the top,

hopefully just wash more water in...

..and get that dirt loosened out of there as quick as possible.

Waiting for the material, for the water to wash through

and clear itself. It's just taking a long time.

Starting to move, but very slowly.

That's really nasty clay.

That's just jammed up inside the impact crusher.

How's it going?

It's clear. I'm just pushing more water through it this time.

This dirt's got so much clay in it. I don't want it to happen again.

Okay. The motor's okay? The motor's okay.

Thank God. Reset, started up fine.

Well, this little unit controls the speed of the belt.

Basically, the ball mill isn't doing a good crush...

..and oversized stuff is just passing all the way through.

If we just take it down a bit, that'll slow down

how much food goes through the whole system.

That's taking about a third of the speed off the conveyor,

less food going through the machine.

We'll do less tons per hour, but we'll get the finer grind.

We need to grind it real fine to release the gold.

All righty. Oh, that's much better.

There's no big stuff getting caught up.

A little bit of fine tuning and we're back on the gold.

We've just got to push the dirt through now.

Ideally, 40 or 50 tons through in a day.

And if that's loaded with gold,

even a couple of grams to the ton,

that's 50 to 100 grams of gold every day

we can pull out of this machine, no hassle.

I cannot believe that speccy that Salty's found. Like,

that's put a massive dent in the target,

which is only just down the bottom of this little wash here.

So I'm gonna follow this up and hopefully find the source.

When you're finding specimen stones,

which means the gold's still in the quartz,

and there should be a source here still in the rock

or it's already weathered out down here

and that's what I am now finding.

Well, I've got it.

It feels heavy, but it's just cos of all the iron in it.

Normally you can feel the gold's heavy in this,

but look at all the... Oh, no.

No way!

That's similar... That's the exact same speccy that Salty's found,

just a bit smaller. Oh, wow, that's gonna clean up real nice.

That'd be close to an ounce of gold there, so, at this point in time, it's $3,000

Which... We need this.

Singing again. Jesus. It must be another big one.

Maybe bigger.

Wow. That is double the size of the last one.

I reckon this is probably an ounce and a half,

so, um, what, 4500 dollars? That's, that's a good...

Well, that's a good dent into our target.

had to shoot out and do some sampling at a mill site.

Is that something that's coming into the Gold Devils as a team?

If the samples we've taken prove viable,

then it could be a big operation. But not only that.

The guy that's set it all up, he's got a whole heap of more mills

that he wants sampled as well. So, we could have little pockets

of operations all over the country. Hopes and dreams at this point.

Well, we could have definitely done with you here this week. I can see the work you've done.

It's been an absolute nightmare. But we have got some gold.

But for the work that went in, I was hoping for a bit more.

thousand-ounce target, they face an uphill battle.

We can focus on Lloyd and start processing and getting some gold coming in.
