You get bitten by a snake like that out here, it's pretty much game over.

..before she and Andrew find big gold on virgin ground.

Oh, yeah, that's a fantastic chunk of gold.

Fish creek paying the bills.

But when they call in a favour to build a road to the gold,

they're stopped in their tracks.

He can clear a road, yeah, but he can't build a bridge. This is bad.

Got the crane here, now we are burning six grand an hour.

And the gold Devils pay a high price to move their

one hundred tonne crushing plant.

Really stressing me up.

Any damage, even dropping a couple of feet,

the Gold Devils are out of the game before we have even started.

Ugh!

We're giving Adam, the station manager, a hand

at the moment. Got a few cattle to push around.

So Jacqui and I don't mind helping out.

The station helps us all the time,

organise helicopters for us, give us access.

..finding a potentially rich deposit of gold

left them with a problem.

Fish Creek could change our season. It could set us up for the rest of the year.

Oh, yeah.All we've got to do is find a way in there.

If we are going to hit that fifty ounce target,

we need to have our boots on the ground there every day.

If we don't find an easier way into Fish Creek then it's pretty much off the table.

Yeah. It's there. We just need to get to it.

Well, we are going to catch up with Adam and see what he can come up with.

Hopefully there is some sort of solution.

Now that he knows that we have found gold out there

and it's worth continuing, not to mention all the cattle we saw our there.

I think these guys want to get into Fish Creek as well.

straight through here, then it's all pretty good going and then we just

hit that bit of a rough gully that I think is going to be a bit of trouble.

That's the main bit I was worried about. That crossing...

The wet season, it just does havoc every year to these crossings and that.

That should connect the roads then and make life easier for us.

A track that existed here fifty years ago has long overgrown.

It crossed a creek and connected to a road originally used

by horse carts during the Gold rush of the 1870s.

How good is his dozer?

Absolutely. This is a game changer.

It's going to open our season up just fantastically.

The fact that these roads haven't

been pushed for that many years is exactly why we need to be in there,

Andy, because no one else has been in there with metal detectors. That's right.

Just coming onto that crossing now. It's just up in front of me.

And I'm trying out a new machine and bits and pieces,

going 25 ounces. So I think 25 ounces is a realistic target for this year.

We've had a fair bit of rain. That dry blower's out of action really.

I've always got a backup plan. I want to get onto that calcrete.

I believe there's a lot of gold under it and here's the opportunity for us to do that.

I think what I do is I get Danny to clean out the dry blower.

There's still a bit of dirt in there.

I'll jump on the digger, you jump on the loader.

Lay out some pads and, Darl,

if you want to and pick out some nuggets, that'd be good.

Brad's got me cleaning all this mud out here

and we want to get it nice and clean just in case we find some dry dirt.

So Brad's my stepfather. I've known him pretty much my whole life.

Erm, we've always been close. Myself, I'm a tyre fitter by trade.

Erm, I have a large mechanical background, so Brad's always been there to obviously help me

and guide me through everything like that.

I'm happy to help Brad out. That's what family's for. We're all help to help each other.

I just want to help them have a good season.

Most miners, as soon as they hit the calcrete, which they class as a hard bottom,

they don't believe that any gold gets under that, penetrates under it.

So, with all the information that I've gathered from other prospectors in the area,

a lot of people are saying they're actually starting to go under the calcrete now.

Calcrete is a solid layer of calcium carbonate

mixed with sand and silt from dried out lakes.

Brad is hoping that there was gold here before it hardened millions of years ago.

It's pretty rough and it's going to be hard going gettin' under it.

It's going to be bloody hard work.

It's pretty much nature's concrete.

Big chunk of calcrete there.

That's exactly what I am hoping will happen.

Just take up a whole layer.

So I've got to pick up this dirt here

and lay it out on another pad so we can get it detected.

I know that Brad is struggling a bit because he's a bit upset

about losing the use of the dry blower,

but we can't do anything about that.

A lot of stress on him.

Mish, you're in my way. Thank you.

Yeah, well, it's good that Brad can think on his feet

and change plans when problems occur. Hopefully, I can find some nuggets.

And eventually, we will get some dry dirt to run through the dry blower.

It's so good having Danny up here helping.

Right, so I've gotten under the calcrete.

This is all the stuff that I want to detect, so I can't wait any longer.

I'm going to have a quick swing over it before we lay it out.

Hopefully there's a heap more gold in there. This is exciting. Good stuff.

ALEX: Well, this is D-Day for Fair Lady.

We've set a massive 1000 ounce target.

The only way we're going to get there

is by producing good, consistent gold.

And to do that, we are going to need Lloyd.

That's a huge crushing plant.

It can crush a lot of dirt and it needs to be down here

and up and running as soon as possible.

It's a big move, and to do that we have got to get this area

ready for trucks, cranes and a pad

nice and clean and level for the plant to actually go on to.

The quicker they do that, the more cash we save.

With any big move, I'm always apprehensive.

Lloyd's costs a lot of money to build, a lot of money to maintain.

If anything stuffs up, this could cost us our season

before we've even got going.

Well, Paul's up at the Phoenix Project getting everything ready for the crane.

Alex is getting the pad ready and my job is to get this all level,

so that when the cranes come, they can set the crusher down, and it's good to go.

So this is a laser level.

And that way, when we put the crusher down, it's going to be completely flat.

OK, well, this is a receiver, and when we line it up with a laser,

it'll give us a perfect height.

You know, we can't find a huge amount of gold

until we crush a huge amount of dirt

and that's exactly what Lloyd's going to do.

This Fair Lady lease has got a huge amount of history.

All the big ones, picked up long ago.

But what I am hoping, if I take the surface off,

there might be a few nuggets slightly deeper down

that the modern detectors haven't quite been able to hear.

PAUL: This is the final farewell for the Phoenix Project.

Got the cranes coming in tomorrow.

We've just got to clear the dirt from around these containers.

The more prep work you do, the less time the crane is here and the more money we save.

So you are not just paying for the crane hire,

you're paying for all the people, the riggers they've got coming with them,

and it can be costly. For us, at the moment,

we're looking at around 60 and 70,000.

It's all well, and good when you're making gold

and you're bringing in the money but, at the moment,

we're not producing anything, so, it's a bit frustrating, it's a bit scary,

but, you know, hopefully we can get this plant set up

and get back on track and bring in the gold.

We've just followed the dozer through the bush here and got a bit of a road in.

Fish Creek's over there,

but we've got to pass this.

If this all goes to plan, we're going to be able

to get our car across to the other side.

But if this goes bad, we might have a 30 tonne dozer

stuck in the middle of a massive Palmer River wash out.

And in the middle of nowhere, that is not good.

In the tropical far North of Queensland,

between December and April, the wet season dumps an average of 1,600 mm of rain.

Hundreds of rivers and creeks swell, making crossings impassable.

This creek will eventually dry out

until the next wet season when the cycle continues.

Careful, mate. It's getting real soft down on this left hand side. Yeah, copy that.

We don't want the machine to tip over or drop into the creek, so I'm just spottin' him,

making sure the edges are solid and everything is safe and good to go.

We've got a big target this year

so two and a half ounces last week didn't knock much off it.

It was a solid start but we need to get better numbers than that.

So when we're prospecting, we always search the gullies.

The veins carrying gold, they've all come out, eroded off the surface,

and then they have been moved mostly by water

and the changes in the landscape around us.

Think of it this way. Gold's heavy. So, the gold is going to find

its way down to the lowest possible point it can

and that's why we search for gold in these spots.

Snake! Snake!

That looked like a brown snake.

We get 'em out here and they are seriously deadly.

Oh, man. That's

a the closest I've probably come to stepping on snake.

That's just really dangerous stuff.

I mean, you look at a snake bite out here,

you've got a six hour drive back to the nearest hospital.

The only way, the only hope of getting out of here is radio sat-phone helicopter

immediately wrapped, immobilised,

and even then you're still playing with fire. Your chances are real slim.

You get bitten by a snake like that out here, it's pretty much game over.

Hey, mate, just letting you know, I'm moving onto the next gully,

and keep your eyes peeled cos I'm pretty sure

I just nearly stood on a brown snake.

BRAD: So I've got piles of product that I've pulled out

from under the calcrete and starting to look at it now.

This stuff is pretty dry.

so I'm starting to think that we might be able to run this through the dry blower.

Having exhausted the gold at the Phoenix Project, the Gold Devils are

moving their half a million dollar crushing operation to their Fair Lady lease

for a better chance at reaching their 1,000 ounce season target.

ALEX: This is the biggest container. Forty tonnes

and it's got some really valuable crushing equipment.

This part of Lloyd costs over 100 grand. Any damage,

even dropping a couple of feet, well, the Gold Devils are out

of the game before we've even started.

When I built this thing to be solid, and I filled it up with concrete,

and it's not designed to move. I can't even look.

It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Oh, it's creaking. I don't like that.

That's not good.

It's holding together, that's the most important thing.

It's mid afternoon

and the convoy still faces a four and a half hour road trip to Fair Lady.

Probably took an extra three hours than what it should have taken.

Best case scenario, we do make it there tonight before nightfall.

Now these trucks can't drive after dark due to the size and dimensions

of the loads that are carrying. So yeah, fingers crossed

we can make it but if we don't, we'll have to pull up

at the nearest town and yeah, fork out for everyone's accommodation.

It's going to be a very costly exercise if we don't make good time.

Hopefully we can get there and nothing goes wrong.

Yeah, a big woof of smoke and then the old shrapnel goes flying out.

It looks like we've done a couple of tyres on the back of the back

of the dolly, so I don't think we'll make it tonight.

We're not going to get to Fair Lady at all.

We're gonna have to camp up here on the side of the road.

When this creek's in flood and even though it's only a really

small gully, during the wet season, this would be powering.

It'd probably be over my head

and it'd come powering down through there and hit that bank

and when it does a bit of a turn through here,

the water would get a big eddy, like a big slow section right here

and that's where your gold will drop in these areas on what we call inside bends.

It's all about water hydraulics.

And when that water gets slack, the gold will drop out and

yeah, hopefully this is a bit that's dropped out for me right here.

Time to find out.
