it's on the way anyway, so we'll drop the meds off,

then on the way back we'll land, do a little bit of prospecting.

Try and cover the cost for this little trip.

yeah, the poor old bloke. He's getting a bit frail these days.

Hopefully, after that, we can, uh, find some good gold.

The Gascoyne is a subtropical region in Western Australia,

stretching from its 600 km coastline

to its arid interior.

The size of England, the Gascoyne has less than 10,000 residents

and no major mining operations in this extremely remote gold field.

I heard some prospectors had some luck in this area.

It looks great. I can't wait.

It's not what we usually detect, but uh, yeah, I don't know.

I think there could be gold along this bit of a line through here.

We've been now... We still haven't found anything.

We can always go somewhere else.

Yeah, that's right. We got all day.

So, now a prospector mate told me

that there's a quartz reef under this ground

and it's not exposed so we can't see it,

but we know it's here.

And that's where this gold's actually shedding from.

We're looking for ten ounces of gold this season.

We need that gold just to finalise the payment

for Chloe's helicopter licence.

Ten o won't be too much of a problem.

Um, hopefully we blitz it.

And, uh, if we don't, well... (CHUCKLES)

..there's always next year.

So when Chloe gets her chopper license, that'll mean

she'll be able to take a bit of that load off me,

a bit of flying away from me and, uh,

it'll free us both up to go out and

share a bit more gold between us.

I know Chloe would like to see me doing a bit less mustering,

sooner, if we find enough gold to make a good living.

Who knows? Maybe we can hang up the flying boots for good.

I can see that piece sitting there straight away.

Look at it. That's a sunbaker.

That's sitting right on top.

Perfect conditions for chasing gold.

ETHAN: With these heads here, mate,

we chuck them straight over the edge.

They go straight in. They can suck mud,

they can suck the sludge... Yeah...and it doesn't matter.

You do not have to prime them, they can run dry.

And I think it's going to make our job a whole lot easier even for the next day

because this groundwater issue is just getting worse right now.

While Brent waits to hear his fate,

it's down to right hand man,

32-year-old, Ethan West,

and his father, Paul, to find the gold.

Now, I've set a 1,000 oz target,

but the main reason I feel we can get to 1,000 oz this year

is the amount of ground we can move. And we're getting through a lot,

but it's all these little time restraints

that I'm coming across ground water, trying to keep on top of that.

Brent's still out of action now.

He's got no idea I've got these pumps,

but he's gonna get a nice little surprise.

He's spending money he doesn't even know he spent.

And you go, bud.

As long as I hit water, mate. That's what I care about.

I've been throwing in the deep end,

and as daunting as it is I'm also loving It.

There's things I could be doing better, and that will come with time.

I can't say, yes, I'm on top of everything,

but I'm giving it my best shot, and without me here doing this,

we would be doing nothing.

It's always a pain being delayed,

but hopefully these pumps will start speeding up in the morning for us.

Get them up and running, get this ground water out of the holes

and we should be able to start digging a lot sooner in the mornings.

Hopefully, get a whole extra whole other day, so...

It'll all add up.

The more time to dig, the more money we can make.

I've had a very big mindset change this year.

If I'm going to make anything of this,

I have to believe in this operation completely.

I know it's a long shot getting 1,000 oz together and...

I just have to be positive about this.

I have to back my own ability.

I have to make the calls on this ground

and work out what ground I'm taking. Is it worth it,

or have I just cost us thousands of dollars by throwing out gold?

And that's the whole plan of this mission.

We've got a season target to hit

and this is a slight detour,

but it could very well find us

hitting our season target early.

The pair are investigating the story of a prospector

who took the location of his biggest gold find

with him to the grave.

Well, there is a story that I came across

not that long ago, some Smithy's came.

The story was that he came into the pub and...

whacked a big ten or 20 oz nugget on the bar

and then got some supplies and took off again

and was never seen again. Yeah, he ran out there somewhere.

Yeah, well, I'm not gonna ask where. (LAUGHTER)

No-one's ever found this... No...this camp?

Not to my knowledge, no.

And no one knows if he passed away or?

He died in Carnarvon hospital. Yeah, right.

So all his mates went and tried to befriend him and,

he told them it was six km from Cobra.

And so, ultimately, he took it to the grave.

That's right. Hm.All right.

Well...So the secret still remains.

I don't like your chances of finding his camp.

People have tried, but no one's come back with the goodies.

extending their search perimeter to over 60 km,

almost double the original area.

This track doesn't look like it's taken us very far.

and I don't see any other

ways across all around.

The Poseidon crew's prospecting technique

involves spreading out the pay dirt of ancient river gravel on the surface

in ten to 15 cm thick peds

to make it easier to sweep with metal detectors.

running left to right, and this is in between the claims.

It's a pretty thick band on the bottom.

It's, um, yeah, like a virgin pillar.

and we're in for a chance, so... You just never know.

so there's definitely a chance stuff could wash down here.

We're out here looking for rubbish which is odd,

we're normally out here looking for gold.

If we find Smithy's camp then,

surely, there should be gold close by.

The good thing about seeing all these animal tracks and scat

is that it's a sign there's water around,

and not too far either.

Smithy, if he was on the gold and he needed to find water,

all he had to do was follow animal tracks

and that led him to the water source.

It's a big gamble chasing stories but, yeah, early in the season,

but also we could do one swing,

and smash the toe with one swing if we find this camp.
