Things do go wrong quite often. You know, we've all lost...

Lost some good mates to helicopter crashes.

But, er, it just affords me access to all these remote locations, you know.

So after work, we can get out here and find a bit of gold.

Yeah, the dream is to really continue prospecting,

eventually get a mining lease and, er...

make a good living off chasing gold.

I'm sure you all have heard it. I'm French.

Justin joke with me that if I was to be lost in the outback,

I wouldn't make it a day, which I fully agree. (LAUGHS)

I picked Australia because it was

on the other side of the world.

At that time it was 2007.

No one in France was really going to Australia.

And I just thought that would be, like,

the experience of a lifetime, you know?

Initially my mom, she said, "No.

"Not Australia. It's way too far."

And little did she know I was not coming back, so...

So Justin and I can do a lot more gold prospecting.

But to do your travel licence, it's really expensive.

I still need about 30 grand.

We just keep looking until we find it.

For me, it's just about the hunt. It's about knowing there's gold in the ground,

and I wanna be the one to bring it out.

I like the fact that it's a challenge to actually go and get it.

and that's a huge dent to the start of our season.

Yeah. So we're in a mad rush to get everything packed down

before the cranes and trucks get here

or else that's more money we're spending on them just sitting around, so...

Lloyd's held together with absolutely thousands

and thousands of bolts. Don't need to do them all

but the vital ones to take each section.

Crane's due in three days,

so we're under a bit of a time crunch.

After the successful test leach,

er, we're running Lloyd nonstop to get this 5,000-tonne dirt

ready to go for the biggest heap leach in our careers.

The concentrators in the sluice will collect roughly around 70% of the gold.

Now it's up to the bulk leach to collect the rest.

What I'm trying to do at the moment, is build the walls with this dirt.

I've also then gotta focus on getting the the floor on a slight,

gradual dip, down into one corner.

Er, that's where I'll be drawing the fluid from.

Get all that gold turn into a liquid form

and pump that through the carbon columns.

It's basically the final chapter now of the Phoenix Project.

Erm, it's been great to have been out here for a while now,

but all good things come to an end

and we really need all hands on deck out at the Fair Lady Project

to get that project up and running.

Gotta be really careful. This is an expensive piece of machinery.

in their 5,000 tonnes of tailings.

Normally, building something of this size

you have a couple of blokes on different machines.

You have all hands on deck,

but at the moment it's only three of us here

and basically left up to me to get the leach operational.

I gotta get these walls as high as I can.

Er, riding this little bobcat's gonna take me days.

It's like trying to move a tonne of dirt with a teaspoon.

I have to call in a favour.

Got a mate down the road who's got a big loader.

I don't think he's using it at the moment.

If we get that out here, I'll be able to smash through the tonnes

get a hell of a lot quicker.

Fingers crossed, he can help me out.

Ideally you'd wanna lift this off. But with nothing here to lift it,

we're gonna have to cut it and yank it over

and hopefully we don't bend it.

It's not easy, cutting up something that you've built.

But we've gotta do this to have any chance of moving it.

The thing's a big bit of kit,

where it takes a crane and two trucks to move.

Well, that's all chopped off now.

So my plan, is to attach a chain and we just pull it.

If the crane gets here and lifts every single piece,

Today, we're doing a one-tonne test sample.

We're gonna run through Dirty Gertie, our little trommel.

If it's over a gram to the tonne,

then it's worth trucking in with the little trucking processor.

If it's not, then that spot gets crossed off the list.

Brett and Kat's wash plant, dubbed Dirty Gertie,

is capable of processing up to 4 tonnes of dirt an hour.

A trommel washes away clay and separates larger material,

with the remaining gold being captured in its riffles.

Runoff water settles in the ponds to be reused.

It's daunting, to be honest with you, like...

who knows what's gonna be in there, so...

Yeah, I've had some luck. So a mate of mine contacted yesterday,

allowed me the use of his loader.

Well, here she is. Good looking machine.

We can actually move all this dirt a hell of a lot quicker now. You beauty.

The 50-tonne, 600hp loader,

can move eight tonnes of dirt in every bucket.

11 times the volume of the mini loader.

Yeah. It's not gonna take much time to get this thing built at all.

It's all about having the right tool for the job and this is definitely the right one.

The size of the leach I'm trying to build at the moment...

Yeah, a lot of things can go wrong.

It is a chemical process, you're gonna have one or two elements

in the dirt that doesn't like the reaction going on

and it'll just block your carbon up straight away, so...

It's definitely worth it. You're talking about $500,000 reward

for a $100,000 expense.

Big risk, big reward. It's just the way it is.

The leaching process works by pumping cyanide solution

through gold bearing dirt.

The cyanide binds to gold particles,

before it's pumped through columns of black carbon

that catch the gold.

The cycle is repeated until all the gold is trapped in the carbon.

By chaining together existing leach ponds,

Paul has created a massive leaching circuit

capable of processing 5,000 tonnes of tailings.

It all comes down to this.

Final chapter at the Phoenix project.

Flip the switch, open the valve, circulate cyanide solution,

through carbon column and capture all that goodness.

Show me the money.

I've been looking on maps and I can see

that there's some good ground here, about 5km in.

So I've got all my supplies, I've got plenty of water

cos it's pretty hot today. And I'm ready to venture in

and deep into some scrubland.

Gold follows gravity and bedrock acts

like an actual sluice that traps the gold in it.

Sometimes to get the gold, you've gotta do things others aren't prepared to do.

And you know, I'm prepared to go deep into the outback to find it.
