So coming to Fish Creek by helicopter

was pretty much the only way we could do it.

It was a massive way away from any of the roads

that exist here now.

We've got seven days to do this mission.

We lose two days each way with the travel,

you know, and we can't miss that pick up with Matt

so it gives us five days to prospect this ground

so we're really on the clock with this one.

We're pushing uncharted territory this season.

We're going for gold that no one's ever been near before.

NARRATOR: Deep in the tropical forests of Queensland,

a hundred and seventy kilometres from the nearest town,

Jacqui and Andrew start their gold hunting season

with a ten-kilometre trek to Fish Creek

in search of virgin ground.

(DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING)

Jacqui!

Fairly good size croc just went down over, over there.

I seen him go under.Oh.

I think it's just a big freshy

but it's a good couple of metres long.

I'm just concerned that after the wet season

a few salties might still be hanging around.

One of those could be laying in this water right in front of us and you would never know.

They are the best ambush predator on the planet

so we've just got to be really careful around these sorts of water holes.

Righto, let's keep motoring.Yeah.

Worst bit is we've got to get to the other side of this water body

and it's obviously full of crocs

so I think we're just gonna have to find a shallow spot to cross.

This grass is getting long down here.

I'm getting real snaky vibes now.

Yeah, so out here snakes are seriously a real concern.

We've got, in Australia, at least

twenty out of the world's 25 most deadly snakes.

We get those Taipans.

You got like 30 minutes, an hour to get yourself some medical attention.

Well that's not gonna happen here.

There's no way we can get a chopper in here to get picked up.

If one of us gets bitten by one of those venomous snakes that...

We'll die. We won't get out of here.

Jacqui and Andrew have spent the past two years exploring

the treacherous Palmer River goldfields...

I think somebody might have died here. This all their remains.

..battling the elements...

We are not getting through that, mate.

..to find gold on untouched ground.

BRAD: I'm heading back to where we finished up last year.

I was absolutely sick to my stomach

that we had to finish up and we had to leave.

You know probably the best choice was to sell up but I don't know,

there's just something in me that I just couldn't do it.

During the off-season, I've gone back to work.

I've worked my arse off to get back here.

I've bought Devil's Cut.

I own a 100 percent and I'm going to make it work this season.

If I'm wrong and this backfires, I potentially lose everything

but if it goes right, it will change our life forever.

So here we go. It all starts here.

It's got to work this season but I can't do it alone.

In the Western Australian goldfields,

Brad McGhie has rallied his family.

Wife Wendy, daughter Trista,

son Bailey and Brad's parents Liz and Max

to help revive their Devil's Cut lease.

That's our secret weapon. That's gonna find us all the gold.

How much does that cost? It doesn't matter.Yes, it matters.

I'll be honest. I've done a deal.

All the guy wants is 20 percent of whatever we find.

Whatever goes through that dry blower, he wants 20 percent.

All right.We still got other operations going. We're gonna push and detect stuff.

But this will be the bulk of it. If we can get tonnes through this,

we are going to find some good gold. But with more machinery, we need more hands

and that's why you guys are here, Mum and Dad.

There's just too much machinery for Wendy and I to run.

Yeah. We'll give you a hand. We don't want to see you fail.

The size of 500 football fields,

the Devil's Cut has stockpiles of unprocessed pay-dirt

from previous workings, providing the perfect material

to run through the McGhies' unproven dry blower.

Hopefully, everything goes right this season.

I'm not relying on just one method.

I'm gonna give everything a go and just see what works.

I've got to try and make something happen.

Wendy and the kids are relying on me.

The rest of the family is relying on us, so,

the old man's retired so for him to pick up the tools again

and get stuck into it and try and help us out is bloody, you know, out of the world.

We need to find gold because

just running this gear costs you a fortune.

Diesel, maintenance, everything like that all adds up.

I've been a qualified diesel mechanic for about 50 years.

I've spent a great deal of my life

sort of working around mining environments

and that's why I didn't mind coming up and just give him a hand,

see if we can get things moving.

This is what Brad wants to do. I mean he loves doing this.

He doesn't wanna be working away from us

but we have got children to feed and bills to pay.

It's always stressful because you never know what's gonna happen

but you know I support Brad in what he's doing

so hopefully we can make it work.

Brad's mum, Liz, detects a pad

where ten centimetres of topsoil has been removed

to allow the detectors coil to reach gold deeper below the surface.

I was a bit worried about Bradley saying he wanted to come out here again for another year.

I mean I hope it works out for him. He had a bad year last year

so, as much as we can do to help him, we'll do it.

For Gold Retrievers, Brad and Chris Smith,

last season began with a disaster

when storms side-lined their $75,000 crushing plant.

We haven't even started yet, man

and we're frigging 20 grand in the hold already.

Then mechanical breakdowns...

What happened?CHRIS: I don't know. It just stopped.

..and meagre gold returns...

..brought an end to the partnership.

BRAD: I think this is the end of the Gold Retrievers. I think so, mate.

WENDY: Whatever we decide to do, just know that I'm gonna be right there with you.

Here we go. So this is the first time

I've run this thing so we don't know what it's going to do

until we put product through it

but at the moment everything seems to be doing what it's supposed to do.

Yeah, look this is the moment of truth.

That should do it. Just slowly.

So what the dry blower is gonna do is we can feed product

into the hopper and then that will go through into the ripples

and then it's got a big bellow system,

which will blow air through it and separate the heavies from the light material

and hopefully catch gold in the ripples.

Just hang on a sec.

Something's not right with it. I think it's too course this stuff.

So you can see we've got the finer stuff underneath

and it is blowing it but unfortunately all that bigger stuff

is sitting on top of that finer stuff and holding it down and compacting it.

So, I'll shut it down.

So it's blocked up straight away. So this stuff's too coarse.

Gonna have to clean it out and start again.

ETHAN: All I know is Brent was rushed off to hospital last night

and he's got some pretty bad neck injuries.

And apart from that I haven't been able to find out too much more.

We're just about to basically kick off our official season

and we're already in the unknown

of what's going on, what's happening.

The main thing is I just got to check on Brent.

Puttin' one of the bash plates up on the excavator and slipped

and it came down and it whacked me in the head.

It half knocked me out to be honest.

It's not looking good. They reckon there's

maybe another disc blown out but they need the MRI to confirm.

You look like you're in a lot of pain.

All I want you to do, mate,

is maybe go out there and make a start on it.

You gotta trust me and that's it. I call the shouts out there?

is we've got to motor through this ground. It's about getting

as much ground up and out as we can.

What's our goal? What's our target?

I can't give you a figure. I'm holding that pretty close to me

because I'm going to see what we can achieve as a team. I think we get moving.

Brent's not out here and mate, that's a worry to the family

but in saying that, this is an opportunity for Ethan

to show what he's made of and the pressure will be building up inside him.

I know that kid and I love him dearly

but yeah, inside he will be churning.

He'll want to do everything spot on.

So now this is basically officially the start of the season.

I'm the one calling the shots

and it's a little bit daunting, it really is,

but it's also the opportunity I need as a person to probably grow.

The ground I'm right now bringing out is the bottom material

and that's the ground we are chasing.

Ethan excavates four metres down to the bedrock of an ancient river

where gold has been trapped in the gravel and clay.

These gravels are dug up and spread out in a pad for the detectors to scan.

ALL: Hey!BRENT: That is gold!

Brent Shannon and Ethan are the Poseidon Crew.

They've pulled some of the biggest nuggets

from Victoria's golden triangle.

Two years ago, they gained mining access to the legendary Catto's Paddock.

Some of the biggest nuggets that have been found in the world

have been found right here in this paddock.

These nuggets are huge around here.

Absolutely huge and I'm not gonna give up until I find one.

I've noticed a big crack opening up a good metre away from the edge.

That's trouble. Are you there, Eth?

Yeah, Nev.

Just to the left of ya,

the ground is starting to open up

probably a good three to four inches.

Yeah, I see that now, mate.

She's crumbling. You gotta be careful.

We can see. There she goes now.

You wouldn't want it to come down on top of ya.

I've just come across a bit of different ground.

Because the old boys have been here, they have dug holes, it's been backfilled,

there could be a hundred ounce piece sitting up ten foot above the bottom

because the old boys threw it out and it's been pushed back down into the ground.

So I'm gonna get Nev to detect it. I don't want to miss anything.

If it ends up being there, you'll be the hero.

It is so nice to finally relax.

Now we've had a good feed

and it feels really good to sit down.

It just makes you feel like you're alive, ay?It does.

It's this part of the world. We're in love with it

and just wouldn't be anywhere else.

As night falls in the remote tropics of Far North Queensland,

the jungle comes alive.

The region is one of Australia's most diverse,

playing home to some unique nocturnal animals.

Like the Papual Frogmouth,

the tiger Quoll...

..and the carnivorous Julia Creek Dunnart.

We thought we'd push further up the system

and just start working all the little side gullies

that are coming into the main creek.

Millions of years ago,

seismic activity pushed gold laden rock

from beneath the earth's crust to the surface, forming ridges.

Over time, water erosion washed

the heavier gold down from ridgelines

where it settled in low-lying gullies.

We start in the gullies and if we find a really rich gully full of gold

then we start pushing the hills around as well

because we know that gold has come into the gully somewhere

and it's up to us to find out where that spot is.

We set ourselves a 50 ounce target this year,

which is pretty ambitious for two detector operators

but we are gonna go, you know, deeper into the bush and harder

than we have ever before to try and run it down.

(DETECTOR BEEPING)

That's a big signal.

(CHUCKLES) It's a big signal cause it's a big nug.

(SIGHS) Instant energy. Instant happiness right there.

Probably got maybe three, four grams out of this one.

Three hundred and fifty bucks or so. It's a pretty decent chunk.

Day one, digging a target out of bedrock,

ah yeah, this is what prospecting is all about.

I'm already excited and I haven't even seen what's in here yet.

Fish Creek gold. I love it.

Four or five grams there.

Four or five hundred dollars straight up.

That's a fantastic start to a prospect.

We know it's here now. This is exciting.

We put a bucket of dirt in but I think the dirt is too coarse

and actually blocked up straight away so we need to unblock all of this now.

We need to get all of this out and start fresh with some different material.

So this is not the ideal start that we wanted.

Certainly not.

But I think we probably just walk around

and have a look at a few different piles.

I've got plenty of stockpiles here.

We're getting behind the eight ball here.

That's another day gone. Yeah, I know.

So we've gotta get moving I suppose. Get something done.Yep. Yep.

Brad promised his family

that he'd produce three ounces of gold by the end of the week

but he's struggling to keep his newly-built dry blower running.

We found a pile of dirt that

has better consistency for the dry blower.

Wendy is on my back about finding three ounces.

I certainly was confident at the beginning of the week

but I am starting to lose a bit of confidence now.

You know if it doesn't work through the dry blower I don't know what we're going to do.

(DETECTOR BEEPS) Ooh, Bailey.

Sounds like we might have something here.

going through a lot better than it is. It shouldn't be blocking up like that.

Yeah, look so what's happening is this is your bellows

so this is where all your air pressure comes from

and there's a big gap along here. You're losing all your air pressure.

I don't think Wendy is going to like this.

You've got about four days left to get three ounces of gold.

I'm running out of time and I'm running out of options so...

I'll have to come up with something. I've gotta prove to Wendy that we can find some gold.

I think Brad's really feeling the pressure now.

Basically two days and we haven't really achieved anything.

I had a gut feeling that I was coming across a change in the ground

and I was seeing a lot more gravels up high so I went with me gut feeling.

With team leader Brent laid up with neck injuries

it's up to foreman Ethan to step up and run the operation.

Gold could be anywhere amongst this mix,

whether it's a foot off the top of the surface or a foot off the bottom.

Instead of concentrating on the usual gravel layer just above bedrock.

Ethan is gambling that there's good gold in a gravel layer

he's uncovered just below the surface.

Yeah, mate you can take that and dump it over towards the dam, mate.

No worries buddy.All right, I've got that ground out now.

Dad's dropped it off over there so I'm just going to jump on this dozer and start pushing it out.

Get 'em all spread out. Get Nev over there working,

get Dad working and hopefully find some gold.

We finally got the big dozer back now.

It was completely rebuilt at the end of last season.

It just makes my job a lot, lot easier.

Ethan's got the system going

while he's pushing out the dirt with the dozer,

Paulie's grabbed his machine and he's into it too.

Everything's running like clockwork.

Ethan, he's doing a great job and we'll just keep following.

You get enough of these, it will pay the costs for the day

while we are waiting on that big gold.

I'm not sure exactly what's happening right now.

All I know is I turn the key off and she ain't shutting off.

This is a pain in the arse when this stuff happens.

We've just had this fully rebuilt.

Normally you have the problem you can't start them. Right now, I can't shut it down.

If you've disconnected the power to the solenoid that should shut down.

He doesn't need that right now. I just don't know what we're gonna to do...

So what we've done is we've siliconed it all.

It's not pretty but hopefully it works.

So there was air leaking between this gap here, along these plates,

so we have siliconed the whole way around

and hopefully sealed it so the air pressure doesn't escape.

We'll give it a go.

Mechanical issues have set the McGhies back two days,

threatening this week's goal of three ounces

and their dream of making The Devil's Cut a viable business for their family.

Working good. Actually working really good.

Yeah it's working a lot better and we're starting to get the idea of it now, how to feed it.

The feed's very touchy

but it's starting to look like a dry blower now.

WENDY: Yeah we are under the pressure here.

The boys are trying to get the dry blower up and going

so me and the family have got to try and make up time and find some gold.

It's so important to him to prove himself to Brent

and the very last thing he wants to do is ring Brent

and say, "I can't switch the dozer off. It keeps running."

Well, it's not a thousand ounces

but probably an ounce and a half, two ounces, mate.

So we only need a thousand more of them, mate, and we are set.

Mate, I'm keen on the big stuff too

but these still make me pretty happy.

ANDY: The exploration approach we're going for this year

of pushing really deep into untouched ground

is the best way for us to track down some really good gold

and hit that 50 ounce target.

You feel like you're the one, you're the one that's going to walk onto that massive nugget.

You're the one that's going to find that patch no one else has ever had

the chance to come across before.

There's a heap of river rocks in this creek

so an ancient river flowed through this area at some stage

and they can carry some fantastic gold.

Yeah here we go. This is what I'm talking about.

When we talk about ancient river rocks,

this is exactly what we're looking for.

These big water worn rocks that you're seeing here,

only a big river's going to move rocks this big

and if it can move rocks this big, it can move big gold as well.

This is one of the best signs you can see on the Palmer.

JACQUI: Today is our last day detecting and tomorrow is evacuation day.

We've been out here for a few days now and to be honest,

I am feeling pretty weary and exhausted.

It's a bit of a mental thing for me.

I'm trying to stay as focused as possible.

Who knows, one target could change everything.

For six days Jacqui and Andrew

have endured the energy sapping humidity

of tropical Far North Queensland.

It's been a massive week and I'm really quite cooked

but we just gotta keep pushing for another day and then it's all over.

(DETECTOR BEEPING)

Also need to find as much gold as we can in that time so.

Oh no, that's gold!

So this gold's got a heap of ironstone on it.

It would have come in an ironstone and quartz reef, this piece of gold.

I'm pretty happy because that's probably three grams of gold there

so that's an extra $300 in our pocket.

Plus, I might be worn out

but I'm not going to stop digging these out of the ground, I know that.

Everything we've gone through this week

has just been pretty brutal, if I'm honest,

and it's been super challenging and hard but this is how I go home smiling after all this.

After a shaky start,

the McGhies put 30 tonnes of pay dirt

through their new dry blower

to produce 20 kgs of concentrated heavy minerals.

We had a few problems with the dry blower. MAX: We learned a bit this week

about dry blowers. Yeah. And we've still got a fair bit to learn.

because you're not gonna get those nuggets in the dry blower.

So we got nuggety gold and we got the fine gold and the smaller stuff.
