It's been a while since I've come out

because of the health problems I've had.

It's been a bit over a year where I was diagnosed

terminal with cancer.

I've got the triple whammy unfortunately.

I've got lung, lymphomic and bone, so

you know, like, the outlook is not good,

but, you know, they give me maybe another another 12 months.

But I'm aiming for more.

I'm at a point now where I've got to start making a decision,

like I put my whole life into researching this property,

more than 35 odd years prospecting, sampling,

because this is my family's future.

We've got a lot of old history,

of nuggets that came out of these holes in the ground.

We have in our palm right now,

the means to create new history.

This site could be one of the richest sites

found in Victoria for a long, long time.

This is make or break for me,

right here, right now.

as everybody knows we are good mates we've known each other for a long time,

um, so I've given him a call to come over and talk to me.

After investing his life savings, Neville Perry's dream of finding

gold at German Gully paid off.

But his life's work

was shut down overnight when Heritage Victoria

accused him of mining in a protected area.

When you've got a 25, 30 year dream,

you're going to fight tooth and nail to keep it alive.

Nearly bankrupt, facing a year in jail,

and a $100,000 fine, Neville chose to defend himself in court,

winning the legal battle.

This wasn't just a fight for me,

and it's not just a fight for prospectors rights,

it's a fight for landowners and the rights

the landowners should have to go to work on their own lands.

into his German gully dream.

With a stockpile of the paydirt

that produced his $200,000 monster nugget.

The paydirt hasn't been through a wash plant.

And if Neville's hunch is right, this sample will prove

German Gully holds millions in fine gold.

I reckon there is easily a thousand tonne here, maybe even more,

so what I reckon is that, I know

I sold the big licence and the wash plant, okay?Yeah.

But when I sold it, I done a deal with them so I can get through

two and a half thousand ton a year

to do tests wherever it is. I reckon we truck it over

get it washed, get whatever gold is in it,

and if we can see at least ten ounces on the scale,

I will happily shake your hand and say, "Let's make it happen."

Over the week ahead Alan, we've got some pretty tough terrain to get across.

situated right here in outback W.A.

JUSTIN: There's a lot of old stories about old timers bringing back scores of gold so,

yeah, there is gold up there to be found.

Can't believe we actually made it out here, mate.

Now we just need to start making some spots.

You've got a spot up here you reckon might be worthy?

ALAN: Wow man, look at that river. That looks epic.

That's the Lyons River down there. There's plenty of drainage channels here.

That could be full of gold.

I don't know, we might struggle to get a car in there, mate.

Whatever it takes for us to get into this area,

we should definitely come here, mate.

bush living and underwater detecting.

They specialise in exploring the

most remote corners of the Australian outback.

Willing to probe the depths in their efforts

to find gold on untouched ground.

Last season their hunt for gold led them to a undiscovered shipwreck...

ALAN: How good is that?

And big nuggets.

That's the biggest nugget I've found.

Uh, up in the Gascoyne gold fields today,

I've always wanted to get up here.

It's known as the forgotten gold fields.

So the reason Alan I wanted to come out here is just

purely because the isolation how remote it really is.

There's really good history here, real old time history,

but it's not very well known because

a lot of the old timers passed away out here.

There's lonely graves in the middle of the bush,

prospectors find them all the time.

A bit of a little echo there.

(SIGHS)

I reckon this probably weighs about a gram and a half.

That's about 130 bucks. That's a good little starter.

I've kicked off the start of this season,

working up here on me own at the Phoenix Project.

Mel and Alex are on their way here now to,

you know, chat about what the plan is for the full season.

I'm going great guns here and producing gold.

I'm on a winning streak

so, we've got to hit this hard until we get

all the gold out of the ground.

ALEX: Well, we're heading back to Phoenix.

We've got to get our wash plant Lloyd down to Fair Lady

otherwise I don't think this season has got much hope.

Last season, the major, major issue was

we were split in too many places,

trying to juggle two sites with a small team.It's too much.

I mean, they are 600K apart. I mean that's not

just a trip down the road.

Each day is just going between the sites.

MEL: Right, so we both agree,

we need to shut Phoenix Project down.

Yep.Move Lloyd up to Fair Lady,

whether Paul agrees with us or not.

Well if Paul doesn't agree with us

that could be the end of the Gold Devils.

That sounds really good. That's what we want.

With their combined ten leases

and millions of dollars in equipment,

the Gold Devils, Paul, Mel and Alex

set themselves the biggest gold target in Aussie Gold history.

I want to chase a 1000 ounces.I'm up for it.

A miracle gold pour from Fair Lady saved their season.

But with the Gold Devil's operation

now stretched across the two leases, the team is at a crossroads.

That processing plant, we need it at Fair Lady.

My feeling on this site is it's coming to its end

before it does, let's jump ship and

go to a site that has got a lot of potential.

Paul, I just think it's time to pull the pin on Phoenix Project.

My thought was sell it and move while we still can.

Well, at the moment I'm not ready to sell this lease.

I've done more assays, and the

lab work says there is gold there still.

Think about this for a second.

We run it through the door into the impactor, into the ball mill

and that's going to smash down all the gold particles to a

microscopic level, yeah?Yeah.

Then I can whack in a five hundred ton test leach then it should leach

pretty much instantaneously because of its size.

Probably the quickest leach we have ever done.

Well, you're starting to talk a lot of sense to me right now.

Um, if this is a quick thing and we can get amounts is out of it and prove them.

How many ounces do you think that you'll be able to get out of it?

If I don't have 10 ounces in my hand to show you at the end of it,

then we'll pack up and move.

Mel welds a chute to connect their existing

crusher circuit to a ball mill.

All right, we are all done.

I reckon it's ready to fire up.

This new configuration of machinery will allow them to complete the

heap leach in record time by crushing the paydirt

to a microscopic level.

The paydirt passes

through the impact crusher and is then washed into

the newly added ball mill where heavy steel balls

pulverise it into a fine slurry.

that will then pour into the heap leach.

My job is to basically just make sure

that there's no big rocks that will get caught down here and if they do,

I usually put them down with this.

(BLEEP)

Alex, Alex, there is water coming out of the old mill.

Life here has carried on almost completely undisturbed

for billions of years.

Now with just three people for every 1000 square kms of red dirt,

the upper Gascoyne region is one of the most

remote gold fields in the world.

ALAN: What do you reckon, Salty?

Didn't exactly have a great day yesterday.

How much money have we spent getting here?

Two grams just isn't going to cut it.Yeah.

Ah look, I've come up with a new plan. It's not going to be easy

but that sport we marked on the East Lyons river with the chopper,

we need to get there somehow.

Well, last night I was doing a lot of reading.

A lot of history on the East Lyons river

and all the old timers out there were pulling about

fifteen ounces a week out of there, which is huge.

Well mate, that seals the deal.

Let's um, let's pack up and get out there.

SALTY: There's no roads leading where we're going.

We are in the middle of absolute nowhere.

Definitely some of the most remote country in Australia.

No tracks but our own, mate.

I don't really feel like doing a tyre.

Don't want to get stuck out here. No phone, no people.

We're getting close to the Lyons river, mate.

I can see the tree line.

Thankfully, Justin flew us all over these parts.

We can see where the best spots are.

ALAN: Yeah this is bloody beautiful.

There's no movement in this water,

which means it's a perfect place for kind of waterborne diseases.

Meningitis, tuberculosis, E Coli.

They've all been found in these water holes.

With meningitis being the most dangerous

because once that settles on your brain,

it's generally deadly.

I don't know if this is a very smart decision coming in here.

I can't see anything. Can't see where I'm stepping.

but the problem is it's just getting so cloudy.

So now I'm just...

Just trying to feel around in the dark.

want to be walking around through here.

What happened?

Well, there's a problem.

Big rocks making their way down,

like this, and that's not going to go through the ball mill.

But at least it's a quick fix.

There's a few big rocks that just jammed up the feed chute. That's all it is.

All right, let's fire it back up.

PAUL: Pressure's on now. Mel and Alex.

I wasn't actually expecting what they said when they got here

but I know we've got a lot of gold left here

and to walk away and leave it behind is just stupid.

At the end of the day, if the ten ounces minimum isn't in there,

it's going to be a horrible start to the season for the Gold Devils.

Well, this is the stuff coming out of the ball mill.

I mean it's basically turning solid rocks

into slurry. There's no lumps.

I mean this is the size we were crushing and leaching.

This is going to be the new size.

That's a game changer.

Now the chemicals, they're going to eat that gold

straight out of that stuff.

This dirt should go all right. It's super fine

and hopefully, it's released all those ultrafine

gold particles that we're chasing.

Leaching dates back to the founder of geology, Georgius Agricola

who shared this process with the world,

in his 1556 book titled

"On The Nature Of Metals". Modern day heap leaching works

by pumping cyanide solution through gold-bearing dirt.

The cyanide drains down through the heap and binds to gold particles

before it's pumped through columns of black carbon that traps the gold.

The cycle is repeated until all the gold is trapped in the carbon.

All right. MEL: Hey, Paul.

The leach is pretty much ready now.

Just gotta keep transferring dirt

from the plant here and put it in as we're milling it.

Um, so I'll take over here if you like, if you wanted to go detecting?

Yeah, well, you don't have to ask me twice.

Paul's giving me some intel on a reef that's about 5k away.

Apparently, they gouged out like three kilos of gold before,

you know, could be promising.

Okay there's a lot of quartz here.

So I'm going to put my detecting gear on and see what I can find.

At the moment we need to find a lot of gold.

I think Paul is wrong, and I just don't think,

we're going to find a lot of gold here at Phoenix Project.

I really believe that we should be back at Fair Lady.

Hmm. There's a lot of bedrock here.

Bedrock can act as a natural sluice and trap gold coming down the hill.

(GASPS) Oh, my God.

I have just found a sun baker.

I have never found a sun baker before.

Look at that. It's just sitting there. You know sun bakers are

when they're just sitting there like that in the sun.

every prospector dreams of finding one of these.

I'm just like, I'm shaking. I'm in shock.

And to find like a half an ouncer.

This isn't a little nugget just sitting here.

I mean this is, what, 1500 dollars' worth?

I might have been wrong about this place.

Well, that's it for the test leach.

You reckon it's going to be ten ounces in there?

The dam's been flooded with cyanide,

that should have eaten all the gold literally at a molecular level.

Now that gold has been pumped through this carbon column

and that's pulled every bit of that gold

onto the carbon. We're almost at the final step.

PAUL: We've got the carbon out of the pod.

It's in an old bulk bag.

Time to get the tarp down and get it to the strip plant.

Let's get it on the road.

Pretty much everything hangs in the balance

on what kind of gold is held in the carbon.

So I think it's trust it's enough for us to keep staying

and keep mining at the Phoenix project.

I really want Brent to come in on this project,

and if the results are bad,

then I don't know where my family's future lies.

It's all hinging on this one bulk sample right now.

Right, so this is the start. We've got four trucks,

so we are moving about 120 tonne over to Brent's in every round trip.

Neville's gamble to find fine gold at German Gully comes at a price.

Trucking, fuel and running the big licence to process the paydirt

will cost Neville over 20000 dollars.

BRENT: Look at that, boys.

All these trucks rolling in. I know.

Neville's son Nick has joined has joined the Poseidon Crew

to help with the test.

So at the moment I do refrigeration and air conditioning in the city.

This is definitely a bit of a change in scenery.

Hopefully we get this dirt out and uh I can be

seeing a lot more of this scenery in the future to come.

If I do this deal with Nev, not just a deal for my family,

it's a deal for Nev's family as well.

Right now, any gold is good gold, but for the matter of the deal,

I'll need to see at least ten ounces

come out of all this stuff. You've got to be

pretty confident you're going to invest,

you know, it might be well, ever million dollars to make this happen.

I would almost have to say that this is the most important

or crucial part of the job.

Yeah. We can't afford to have this thing walk up

and no productivity. The size of the pole,

allows me to get down to the bottom of the hopper,

and ensure that we've always got movement.

It's a simple thing, but it's really effective.

BRENT: The dirt's pretty tacky and when you load it in the back

of the trucks it sort of sticks to the metal bodies.

If it keeps getting hung up in the back like that,

it's gonna slow it down.

Every little setback is costly.

Everything's going pretty well at the moment.

Running smoothly. NICK: Yeah Brent, you got a copy there, mate?

Yeah, I got this pogo stick that I use to get the dirt

down under the barrel and it's broken, mate.

A broken 10 dollar bloody pole has stopped the whole operation.

We need something to poke it down and break it so it can fall down.

This looks like the most simplest of things, which it is,

but without it, it's going to cause us all sorts of dramas today.

That's the reason I don't really want to be walking around

I know this looks the most simplest

basic thing, Nick, but we can't have something to help feed it through

and we ain't got no other pipe here. We got a problem.

I know it's only something little but you know,

something like Brent said, it could

cause a fair bit of drama later on.

Like if we don't get it going now or fix it now,

that hopper is going to stuff up,

you know block up, cause the material's a little bit wet.

Like it could set us back two hours or three hours.

It could be anything.

All right, well what I'll do, Take that end and then I'll squeeze

this end and it'll straighten her up a bit.

We can splint it up like a broken leg.

Bush fix it, and that will get us through the day.

It's good to know these kind of things because

I might be doing this,

you know, could be full time.

Your Dad asked me the other day, mate. It was one of the toughest

conversations I've had in my life.

Because mate, the amount of money

and time and effort we've got to put in

to make it viable, it's going to be probably, you know,

probably close to two million bucks.

Your Dad, all the stuff he's been through, mate.

I don't want to break his heart.

comes back a real good, positive outcome.

There was a lot of doubt in the middle though.

I was pretty worried that we'd made the wrong decision.

I even dreamed about the rubbish that we were finding.

The gold price is at a record high of 3000 dollars per ounce.

Alan and Salty's 1.27 ounces of gold

comes to a total of $3,810.

That's um, wow! I'm happy with that.

Considering we don't know this land, this is ah, I'm happy.Yeah.

It's not cheap getting up here but that covers

all our expenses well and truly,

And some profit.And profit.

I am really proud of what we've been able to accomplish.

We need to take what we've learned here

and apply it to the next leg of our journey.

Don't worry, mate. We're going to smash it.

So I've just picked up the quick 500-ton leach.

That's what it comes down to. Just one bag of black sludge.

Good timing. We're pretty much good to -Go.

That's the carbon that's stripped.

Oh, yeah.Ready to put in the pot and melt up.

The stripped carbon is put into a crucible

in a furnace and heated to 1064 degrees Celsius,

the melting point of gold.

The molten metal is then put into a mould

where the gold sinks to the bottom

and any impurities known as slag, rise to the top.

There's no knowing the proportion of gold to slag until the bar is cooled

and the gold and slag can be separated.

PAUL: Hopefully it's not all slag.
