If the plan was working,

the enemy wouldn't know
we were there

till they heard our engines.
And by then,

it'd be too late
to stop us.

[bombs shells whizzing]

as we flew in,

and I knew the fuel was

and get it back up
to the airstrip

before the enemy got us.

The plan was for Don
to wait there
until we refueled

so we could give him
an escort home.

Without protection
in broad daylight,

that duck he was flying
would be a target

for every Japanese
fighter-pilot,

and the antiaircraft gunner
between here
and Vella La Cava.

the news of our mission
had reached the rear area.

As for Col. Laird,
