this is going to be a long term review
for the ryzen 5700
g
currently the most powerful gpu
coupled with any cpu on the windows
platform
at least
on the desktop

the cpu came out
nearly eight nine months ago along with
the ryzen 5 5600g and it's about time
that we do this long term review just
look at it and see how it works in in
real life
[Laughter]

oh
now what we'll do is to start off with
the
probably the toughest challenge that
i've placed this this hardware to and
that is the
adobe dimension we're going to be
looking at a lot of adobe software so
dimension premiere pro photoshop
all of that will even be looking at a
couple of games towards the end
so
this one is probably the toughest one
let's see what we can do now i created
this a little bit a little bit of
time ago and
it was designed as a thumbnail youtube
thumbnail doesn't take long to do as
long as you've got very good uh hardware
obviously editing it now just with the
onboard graphics is a different kind of
situation
what we
can do with the onboard graphics is to
basically
do whatever we need to do in terms of
moving items around as long as the
design says a 1080p design maybe a very
simple design which doesn't have too
many elements happening
we can do a very brief kind of a preview
like this without any ray tracing
however if we want to turn on ray
tracing things do change we can do that
by clicking on this button
and as you can see i've chosen full
resolution
and we can say also
reduce noise in preview
and when we turn this on you'll be able
to see the ray tracing
now remember this is going to happen on
the onboard graphics with the onboard
graphics
and the cpu working together
so you can see it does do a job it's
pretty quick and it gives you an idea of
what the
what the full render is going to look
like now i have performed a full render
on this design
and the
high quality render took 11 minutes and
51 seconds
whilst the
low quality render took
just one minute and one second
that low quality render will be good
enough for for for youtube however
trying to work
with the
gpu and the cpu almost running at 100
is pretty difficult we can add more
items and we can
we can do basic editing with this one
but the more items we add
the more
features that we the the more textures
we can add more textures and it won't
delay anything let's just add a texture
to this guy here
now this
this can be rendered but i tell you what
it it does
not feel the it doesn't feel as though
the system is highly responsive and you
might notice actually i do
yeah i do stop talking when the render
is beginning
and that's because the system is
basically not able to respond let's
change the texture and let's see what
that looks like
so you can see you can get stuff done as
long as you've got a design that you're
working on it's 1080p it's not too
complicated you can render stuff inside
of adobe dimension i wouldn't recommend
it i would recommend getting a much more
powerful gpu
a discrete graphics card i would
recommend maybe even getting a more
powerful cpu because uh dimension does
like
a lot of
it lacks a lot of power it likes to have
a lot of computing power but as you can
see we can do basic stuff inside of
dimension
let us move on from here but before that

and moving on to photoshop photoshop is
probably the most popular package
inside the adobe creative suite i'll be
surprised if there's anything more
popular what what i've done is to set up
my computer so that if we go to
preferences performance we've actually
got hardware acceleration turned on so
you can see it here the amd graphics
are acting as hardware acceleration and
photoshop really does
like to have a lot
of computing power on the cpu and it
likes to have a little bit of computing
power on the gpu too now just to clarify
my system is running with 16 gigabytes
of dedicated vram
going to the graphics and that means
we've got all the hardware acceleration
turned on for all the adobe creative
suite
let's
cancel and
try a couple of things inside of
photoshop first thing we're going to do
on this photograph i think we're going
to make this woman a little bit more
beautiful
so we're going to go to the liquify
mode or the liquify filter and this one
does like to use the gpu
and it is very responsive
when using this particular
when using this particular
graphics card or the the onboard
graphics
so we can make our eyes a bit larger
let's see if we can get the on-screen
controls
okay there we are
make our face a little bit wider and
more beautiful
and the mouth as well
and she wants to smile a little bit as
well let's do that
uh that is looking beautiful that is
looking really beautiful so you can see
it's very responsive and there is no
difficulty whatsoever getting things
done okay we've maximized the beauty
let's hit ok there we are
so the onboard graphics can power all
the features inside of photoshop that
require hardware acceleration and it
does a brilliant job
another thing that we could do is to
look maybe at the
another filter that really does like to
have
powerful graphics and that's the
adaptive wide angle
and i'm not sure what i'm going to do
here maybe i'm just going to draw
a line like that and another one
like that this is crazy
you can see it's highly responsive
without the gpu
we would be getting very poor
performance right now if you're
wondering what numbers you're seeing
here they are the numbers just for the
onboard graphics and the cpu
we've also got the system ram as well
but um
yeah it's highly responsive and i have
no delays in doing anything whatsoever
let's see what happens when we go to the
neural filters
and the neural filters sometimes do like
to have a lot
of
power they do like to have the graphics
let's see if we can move this
yeah i can see the graphics uh really
kind of powering up
let's do style transfer
there we are and that one does use the
cpu it does also use the gpu quite a lot
like you can work with photoshop without
hardware acceleration
but it is painful
i find it painful i don't know how
people do it
now i think if i had a more powerful
graphics card
some of these effects might be applied a
little bit more quickly
but as it is it's pretty quick it's
pretty responsive
beautiful now what we can also do let me
just uh get rid of the selection
we can also go ahead and test what it's
like to run a very simple
adjustment so we'll take take the color
balance and
this guy here allows us just to change
the colors a little bit
maybe add a bit of magenta
a bit of blue
and what it's doing it's separating the
image into highlights and shadows
and that's actually kind of a tough
thing for for the for the for the
hardware to do for the software to do
it's gonna identify the highlights and
shadows and it's gonna then identify the
colors and change the colors
accordingly and you can see it's it's a
smooth process with this with this
hardware
it's highly responsive and this is a
fairly large image
i don't know if i should try to
to zoom in but essentially it's about a
third of the resolution
that you're seeing here so i'm working
on a 4k monitor
and
actually using two 4k monitors and the
hardware doesn't seem to have any
problems whatsoever with this it
handles two 4k monitors 60hz refresh
rates no problems 10 bits per channel
no problems whatsoever
another good test
inside of photoshop is to use the brush
tool so we're going to paint over
the mask
and you can see it's nice and smooth
highly responsive
maybe a little bit of lag but
it's still responsive enough that you
don't really notice any problems with
the with the speed and performance now
there are some other filters that we
find inside of camera raw and some of
these do rely quite a lot on the
graphics card uh and also just the
general work and performance of camera
raw like for instance if i want to zoom
in i can do that very smoothly and
that's beautiful
now if i was using
a more powerful graphics card maybe it
might be just a little bit smoother
who knows
but if i did not have a graphics card i
would literally be just zooming in just
a little bit at a time it's it's painful
to work without without a graphics card
the graphics on board graphics are very
stable they
very rarely crash
and there are quite a lot of other
features inside of camera raw that use
the the the graphics maybe we can take a
look at those when we take a look at
lightroom because lightroom and camera
raw have very similar features
so all in all photoshop does work very
well i would say that the 10 bit output
probably i'm not certain that we are
getting 10-bit output from photoshop
using the radion adrenaline drivers
let's move on to the next software we're
going to move to and is a very
good test for the
cpu does not use hardware
acceleration
now that might change
since let's go to focus blur
now we know that nvidia's is coming up
with some open source
open source drivers for for linux and
that might mean some of the open source
software that currently doesn't use
hardware acceleration might change i
don't know i don't have any information
on that but uh
any improvements to the open source
drivers will be a good thing so we can
see with focus blur which is one of the
most demanding filters inside of
that you might want to use on a daily
basis
it's it's not quite as responsive as the
ones we saw inside of photoshop but it
is responsive it
does use up quite a lot of the cpu the
gpu not so much we don't really touch
the gpu inside of
and i don't know if we're benefiting
from the a 10 bit output
that
that the
adrenaline software is capable of but
i'm getting a very responsive edit with
that's what i like now there are
certain other features inside of
that don't work quite as well let's make
a selection
and let me demonstrate one of these
so let's go to filter
artistic and let's use water pixels
let's hope things don't crash
now water pixels just creates this
beautiful kind of watercolor effect it
is a crushingly
uh expensive to render effect inside of
it can take a lot of time you can
crash my my
it didn't do that this time and it's one
of those that works on a single core so
it doesn't do the multi-core is
capable of multi-threaded performance
with quite a lot of its filters but some
of these filters will just go ahead and
work on a single core
water pixels does seem to want to be one
of those single core
single core
filters
there right try to apply apply it
to the entire image it looks nice but
will it take forever
okay
it's completed and the system didn't
crash so that looks good it's a very
fascinating filter and
there isn't a
i don't think there's a faster version
of it inside of but um you can see
it does the job just
does take a bit of time
so this is the 10-bit color depth that
were
that is available inside of
adrenaline 10 bit per channel color and
it is rgb 444 format so that's full rgb
and um
that's
probably very useful in gaming i don't
know if it's useful for software like
but let's now quit
i think is a pretty tough test and
i think it more or less passed the cpu
past
the the test
this one is very very demanding on the
cpu
so this guy here
almost anything that i do inside of
illustrator always seems to happen a
little bit slower than i would like it
to
let's go ahead and change the color of
this bad boy here
okay let's try to apply a pretty tough
filter for
for this guy
so one of the things that we can now do
inside of
inside of illustrator is to do 3d so
we've got fairly sophisticated 3d
features
and these features are reminiscent of
the stuff that we had inside of
photoshop a few years ago when those
features worked really well
there is also an option to render the 3d
filter to render the 3d effect
and we can use ray tracing to to render
it
and we can go for high quality if we
want
so in many ways in many respects this is
very similar to what we have in
dimension
and it it does seem to work well i'm
just going to click away
and we've got a nice 3d effect there i
would say that that having a decent on
having decent on-board graphics is
enough for working with many of the
features inside of and really the 3d
features here are probably the most
demanding features for 3d you do need
three
gigabytes of uh dedicated graphics you
can easily arrange that
and it works reasonably well i would say
the next software is going to be adobe
after effects
and this is a this is a little design
that i worked on a little bit before let
me see if we can
let's see what's happening here
okay so this is a small 4k animation let
me see if i can um
i've cleared all the cache so there's
nothing stored in cache
and you'll be able to see how well this
runs inside of after effects
on the onboard graphics
very easy
it's the kind of thing which this is a
little graphic that i did for the uh for
the overclocking video which is going to
be useful if you want to do overclocking
uh with this hardware
as you can see there it is not difficult
to to do very simple 4k animations
and this one is not that simple it's
actually kind of complicated but
basically when you're doing this kind of
animation it i can show you what what it
looks like maybe
core animation lots and lots of players
going on there
so
yeah it's very it's powerful i can't
really express enough just how powerful
this this is
it gets the job done
when it comes to rendering the graphics
it's i mean you can tell it's not going
to take a lot of time
it literally takes about as much time
to render the final render as it does to
to do the preview inside of well maybe
about twice as long but it is
really really capable and maybe i don't
test it enough i think if you're working
with very complex projects inside of
after effects very complex templates
doing all kinds of crazy stuff all kinds
of filters and effects
uh cinema 4d and all that kind of stuff
you would find it probably a lot a lot
more difficult to use this kind of entry
level
hardware but for
you know basic 4k editing and animation
it is it's all you need um i can't get
across enough just how competent it is
inside of after effects now maybe part
of that is because the the cpu is pretty
powerful in the graphics
maybe they're not that useful inside of
after effects the the gpu acceleration
but
it gets the job done i can't
really say anything more than that in
terms of ram management it is better
than using discrete graphics i don't
know why that is but the ram management
if i was using discrete graphics we will
be up to about 26 gigabytes of
of of ram
usage i don't know why it's better at
handling memory
when you're using the onboard graphics
uh the graphics i use are rtx 3070 for a
discrete
graphics card and that is about eight
gigs of ram maybe that's what makes the
difference maybe giving the on-board
graphics 16 gigs of vram just makes it
more efficient i don't know so
uh a huge thumbs up for his performance
inside of after effects but if you're
doing very complex projects yeah it's
it's it's gonna get tough if you're
using things like cinema 4d
i don't know how much how much love
you're going to get with that
so we're now inside of premiere pro this
is probably
one of the most
demanding pieces of software
uh to to work with
let me see if i can get
the
audio going
it's literally just increasing this
value by about 50
applying it and seeing it seeing if
there are any effects that are negative
in terms of stability
uh you might want to increase the
voltage to see if that will support the
new freq
you don't want to increase the the
voltage too much because that increases
the temperature but
so that's playback of a very complex
project with lots and lots of sequences
uh all kind of this is like i think
sequence number seven which is nested
it's got
i think six nested sequences inside
outside of it it's playing back i don't
think we're getting any drop flame
frames when we were overclocking this is
called under vaulting and if you like
the idea of running a system very quiet
okay maybe we're getting a few few uh
drop
drop frames but um
yeah it's generally speaking fine um
i've not had a huge amount of problems
with the with the onboard graphics once
you've been editing for about an hour
you'll find that you start running out
of uh
it's not running out of ram
um sometimes the projects are
this one is about 45 minutes long
i didn't have many problems editing this
one but in the past with some projects
that have run into an hour
maybe longer than that maybe very large
4k projects it has become slow if you're
the kind of person who works with very
complex projects
4k 8k projects this kind of setup is
going to get
very very tiring very quickly because
you're going to find that the software
is dragging
and coming to a hold
sometimes
it's difficult to use this even with
1080p
if there are a lot of things a lot of
effects that i'm trying to apply so i
would want a more powerful cpu
maybe some of the effects maybe some of
the sound effects would work a little
bit better if i had a more powerful cpu
i'll be more willing to use them maybe
some of the
graphic effects some of the video
effects i'll be definitely more willing
to use those if i had a graphics card
that was more powerful
so yeah definitely if i can get more
powerful graphics for this guy here i
definitely would
i think i would as well
for
dimension dimension is the other one
that really wants a more powerful
all-around uh 4k editing rig so as your
project is simple uh five 10 minute
youtube videos you're not doing this
kind of 45 minute long
edit that i did here
um this will be fine but once you have a
complex project you want to apply
transitions you want to apply things
that blurs and
this is gonna suffer this is not gonna
really be your friend um
i i gotta say i've been impressed with
what it can do
but i would recommend something more
powerful for premiere pro

let's finish off by talking a little bit
about gaming performance so i have used
this with
premiere pro with the adobe creative
cloud i've also used it with audio
processing software
audacity adobe audition it works fine
with those there really is no difficulty
with audio processing um the cpu is very
powerful when it comes to gaming that's
where the system gets really tested so
with fortnite i was able to get 55
frames per second at 4k
that was using performance mode with
full 3d 100 3d
that was playable and that was enjoyable
with overclocking and i'm using it
overclocked right now with overclocking
i was able to get to 59 frames per
second
inside a fortnight that's 4k
uh i was able to get 149 frames per
second at 1080p
i also tested it with world war z
now world war z suffers with the onboard
graphics but i was able to get
nearly 50 frames per second at 1080p
using medium texture
medium quality and that was using also
fidelity
super resolution
so that's not bad one thing i did find
was that the
frames per second did increase
as you increase the memory speed so
there have been quite a number of tests
done
online which demonstrated that there is
a strong relationship between a gaming
performance and memory speed
and i found exactly the same i found
that you were able to get faster frames
per second as you increase the memory
speed
now would i recommend this for gaming
yes and no for 1080p gaming yes
definitely you can get a lot done at
1080p
there are a lot of games now that use
fidelity super resolution that is
something you could uh predominantly fx
super resolution that's something you
could look into and a lot of games
natively will run at 1080p without any
problems whatsoever using the onboard
graphics
a handful will run at 4k without
not necessarily a handful
not very demanding graphics will work at
4k 60fps uh once you get to the aaa
titles they're going to really struggle
both at uh at 1080p
and at 4k
uh one surprising problem i did also
have was quite a lot of
games that work at 1080p
uh when you're trying to run them at 4k
um some of them just don't want to play
at 4k so that was a that was a bit of a
discovery but basically this is very
good hardware and it's the kind of
hardware that you could
purchase now for about 250 dollars 250
pounds
thereabouts
and it will give you a very decent pc
build if you're doing very good
basic
1080p editing
inside of premiere pro inside of after
effects once you move to 4k that's when
shoe begins to pinch i would say you
want probably to get more powerful
hardware for premiere pro and also for
adobe dimension for gaming it
it it suffices when it suffices um
even a
an entry level discrete graphics card
would give much better gaming experience
um if you're able to overclock it and
get a decent overclock you could
increase gaming performance by about ten
percent but yeah i mean i think
at 250 to 300 dollars very good value uh
if i had to say anything about the 5600g
is that the performance is for the most
part very similar there are situations
for instance if you're using premiere
pro or if you're using dimension where
you will notice the difference between
the performance particularly when it
comes to the cpu but for most tasks the
5600 and the 5700g actually give a very
very similar real-life performance
