- Catalina island is
the largest island

In the chain
of channel islands.

- It is visible from our local
beaches here in la county.

♪ ♪

- Just take a little boat
over there,

And you're in
a whole different world.

- The people that live there,
they live the beach style.

Rarely do you have
a violent crime

Occurring at catalina island.

[dramatic music]

- But then a pleasure boat
operator notices

A body floating in the water.

- That's pretty shocking.

Was it premeditated?

We're all left with a lot
of unanswered questions.

- It was almost $2 million
he had inherited.

I'm thinking that
it might be the motive

For someone to kill him.

- They have enough evidence
to bring a case against him.

Problem is,
they can't find him.

- So now the manhunt is on.

- My instinct's saying,
something's not right.

The hair were standing up
on the back of my neck.

- I was more concerned about
triggering this guy to flee.

It's just a hop, skip,
and a jump

To go across
the canadian border.

- I can't even express
the anger I felt.

♪ ♪

I wanted that guy caught.

[metallic clank]

- Just a 22-mile ferry ride
west of los angeles,

Catalina island sits
in the vast pacific ocean.

In its heyday,

It was a playground
for the hollywood elite.

Now it's a resort island
playing host to tourists,

Cruise ships, and
recreational boaters alike.

But even in this beautiful
beach community,

Grisly secrets can wash up.

[ominous music]

♪ ♪

- Thursday, may 18, 2006,

A pleasure boat operator was

Heading towards
catalina island.

He notices a flock of seagulls

Who are shrieking
and feeding on something.

[seagulls squalling]

He sees something floating
in the water.

It turns out to be a body.

♪ ♪

So he calls that in right away

To the coast guard
to alert them.

- 1-6, go ahead.
What's your position?

- Coast guard immediately
notifies the sheriff's unit

That's there on catalina
to retrieve the body.

[siren wailing]

- Our divers
and our rescue went out

And ultimately recovered
the body out of the water.

It was just floating there,
6 miles off the isthmus

Of santa catalina island,

And that's a long ways.

That is wide-open territory,
nothing around.

We can identify it as a male.

Clothing was on the body.

He had gloves on, shoes on,

But the body was
totally unrecognizable.

- The body is pulled
from the pacific ocean

Near international
shipping lanes.

These lanes are used
by any vessels carrying

Goods and services
to the la harbor

And are some of the busiest
in the united states.

- I'm thinking this guy
might have come off

Of one of these large
shipping containers

Or cruise ships from
somewhere around the world.

Maybe they fell off a boat
and they drowned.

At this point, the body was
sent to the coroner's office

As a drowning victim.

[tense music]

♪ ♪

I go to the coroner's office
and observe the body.

This body was
in such bad condition

That all I can say,
it was a human being.

♪ ♪

But the medical examiner
realized that

There was a bullet hole
in the head.

So the medical examiner
has to open the skull.

And there was a bullet.

So immediately,
it's starting to look like

This death occurred
by foul play.

I confer with
the deputy medical examiner,

And they're agreeing
he was shot in the head

By the hands of another,
and that's what killed him.

This is not self-inflicted.

So now this is
a homicide investigation.

♪ ♪

The most important part was
identifying this person.

The body had gloves on.

When the medical examiner
removed the gloves

On his left hand,
it looked like

Three fingers had been
surgically removed.

They were completely gone
in half pretty much.

So that's the starting point.

I have something I can go on.

So I started looking
to see if there were

Any missing persons reports

For someone missing part
of three of his fingers.

I found none
with the city of los angeles.

I found none with long beach

And definitely none
at catalina island.

Absolutely nothing.

♪ ♪

At this point,
I'm standing there.

I'm looking at the body
and the clothing

He was wearing,
like the shoes.

They weren't boots like
a deckhand working on a ship.

It was high-end stuff,

Like he was someone
that owned a ship.

And I see barnacles
on his shoes.

And I knew that
it would be important

For me to have those studied.

So I immediately confiscate
the shoes as evidence.

- There are
more than 1,400 species

Of barnacles found
in the world's waterways.

If experts can identify
the particular species

Of barnacle
on the victim's shoe,

What its growth cycle is,
where it happens to grow,

And in which parts
of the water,

It could help pinpoint where
the body entered the water,

As well as where and when
the homicide took place.

- An expert from
the natural history museum

Examined the barnacles,

And they had turned out
to be gooseneck barnacles.

- The barnacles are
a special type of barnacles

That are only found on the back
side of catalina island.

So the body most likely went
in the water

In that region of the water.

- After looking at the various
sizes of the barnacles,

He opined that the body was
floating in the water

For a period of about 15 days.

- 15 days is a long time
for the body to have remained

In the same area rather
than floating out to sea.

This can be explained
by a phenomenon

Known as coastal eddies,

Which are currents of water
like whirlpools

That pull objects in

And move them around
in a circular fashion.

- We believe,
once the body resurfaced

From the back side
of the island,

It got caught
in one of these currents,

And instead of going out
to open sea

Where we would have never
seen it again,

It was brought back around
to the front of the island

Between the mainland

And the most populated part
of the island.

♪ ♪

[seabirds squalling]

- By this time, this case is
in the news media,

And everybody knew
about the body

Down in southern california.

And then someone called
my voicemail

And said they were looking
for their friend

Who lived in san pedro.

He was missing,
and they heard about

A body being found
in the water.

And they were afraid that
it might be their friend.

So I called them back,
and I said,

Tell me something about
this person that you know.

And they said, well, oh,
when he was in middle school,

He cut three of his fingers off
on a wood shop accident.

I'm thinking,
oh, my goodness,

I'm going to be able
to identify who this person is.

[suspenseful music]

I needed to prove that
these two men were together

Out there on that yacht.

- They said they had no idea
where he was.

The case was in limbo.

- We were all worried
he'd get away with it.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- Six days after
a badly decomposed body

Was pulled from the ocean
near catalina island,

Investigators received
a detailed tip

About a missing man
who had three fingers cut off

During an accident.

♪ ♪

- That was crucial

Because that matched
what I knew about the victim

That was at
the county coroner's office.

So I ask him, what's his name?

He gave me his name,
his birth date,

And his relative's name.

I contacted the family,

And they came down
to the coroner's office.

And that's how I was able
to identify him

As steven bailey williams.

Next, I talked to several
people that knew steven

To get more information
on his background,

Something that can
help me figure out,

How did he end up
where he ended up?

[somber music]

- It was very much a shock.

I mean, how did steven
all of a sudden end up dead,

Floating in
the catalina channel?

♪ ♪

You always look back
and think,

Well, gee, I could have
done a better job

Being a friend
or being a cousin.

♪ ♪

Our mothers were sisters,

So our parents would try
and connect.

We'd go visit,
or they'd come and visit us.

Steven was good-looking,

And he had
a very bubbly personality.

He would go into a room
and be able to charm

And move around people.

One of his traits is he had
a terrific on-the-air voice,

Very deep, very resonant,
very attractive.

That's how he got on
a morning radio show in denver.

- Steven b and the hawk,
Tuesday morning.

- Can't wait for that
broadcast with tina turner.

Mm-mm-mm.
- You have to.

- When steven b and the hawk
came to denver,

I was a sales secretary.

And my office was right across
from the control room.

So I could always watch
the antics going on in there.

- I got some steroid coolers
that I just mixed up.

- Sure, I'll have mine
straight up.

- They were funny; they did
all kinds of little bits.

And they were the number one
morning show for years.

Steven was probably
one of the nicest people

I've ever met,

Very kind, very trusting,
very open.

And I never felt like
he was judgmental.

He always gave people
a chance.

Then radio was going
in a different direction.

Steven was told,
they didn't need

That big, booming voice
in radio anymore.

I mean, this was something
he loved to do.

And then you're told, we don't
need what you do anymore.

That would have been
a really tough pill to swallow.

- I learned that when
steven left the radio station,

Steven had gone
to culinary school,

And that he would cook his food
to match the wine,

And he had it spot-on.

- And then in about 2001,
his father became ill.

So steven ended up moving
to care for his ailing father

Down in corona del mar
in orange county.

♪ ♪

- Steven saw an opportunity

To really connect
with his father

And to offer a service
by taking care of him,

You know,
on a day-to-day basis.

He did that
for about two years.

And then his father passed away

And left an inheritance.

- I learned it was almost
$2 million he had inherited.

And the thought I'm thinking
is that it might be

The motive for someone
trying to kill him.

[tense music]

- Some of steven's friends
happened to mention

To investigators that he was
feeling pretty overwhelmed

By this huge task
of being the executor

Of this trust and assets
close to $2 million.

Investigators had to take
a look at that and say,

Could someone have been
after that money?

♪ ♪

- All of his friends
that I talked with said that

Steven was very creative,

But he was not very good
when it came

To checks and balance
on the financial side.

And as a matter of fact,
one of his friends said

That for eight years,
steven went by

Without paying taxes.

- Also, investigators
discovered that in 2005,

Steven's friend,
who has a history in finance,

He ends up loaning money
to steven.

And they kind of thought
that was strange,

That even though steven was
left close to $1.5 million,

It always seemed
steven had no money.

♪ ♪

- That friend actually
got steven

Out of an income tax issue

When steven failed
to pay his taxes.

- Now investigators are
looking at this friend.

Was he upset
about this whole money thing,

And did he confront steven?

What role is he playing
in all of this?

- So I started focusing
on steven's friend

Who had given him money.

I want to figure out
what happened to steven.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

♪ ♪

- After learning that
steven williams inherited

Almost $2 million
after his father's death,

Investigators wonder if his
murder was motivated by money

And if he may have been
the victim of betrayal

At the hands of a friend.

♪ ♪

- We talked to steven's friend

Who had given him
financial advice

And given steven money.

And steven's friend's
background was impeccable.

He worked for the state
as a defense contractor.

So he already has
a security clearance

That tells me
I don't have to worry

About what he's gonna say
because he's aboveboard.

And he was
a genuine, good person.

He had steven's
best interest at heart.

And it was pretty obvious
real quick

That, no, he didn't have
anything to do

With steven coming up missing
or steven's death.

There was never any doubt
in my mind.

So now at that point,
we had to look

At all of steven's friends
to make sure

That they didn't have anything
to do with steven's death.

- The investigators start
asking the rest

Of steven's friends,
is there anybody else

That's been showing up
in steven's life?

And all of steven's
friends mention, yeah,

There was this new guy that
showed up in steven's life,

Big-time stockbroker
on wall street

Who made a killing
as a financial advisor.

His name was harvey morrow.

- The detectives learn that
while steven was struggling

With trying to make sense
out of the estate,

Out of the bills
that needed to be paid,

In September of 2003,

He was visited
by an old friend,

And he brought harvey morrow
with him.

Harvey noticed that the house
was in quite disarray.

He saw a lot of unopened mail
on the table.

He saw a lot of bills.

And during his conversation
with steven that day,

He learned that steven was
in over his head.

Harvey offered his services.

He said, hey, listen, steven,
I'm an investment banker.

I can help you pull
this estate together.

And steven just thought
it was a gift from god,

That harvey was an angel
who just walked into his life.

And it was
through that introduction

And that early conversation
that harvey got access

To steven's most important
personal information,

Including control
of his father's estate.

- So as this friendship

Between harvey and steven
continues to grow,

Harvey introduces steven
to his current interest,

Which is a beautiful sailboat
that he recently purchased

And that he's refurbishing.

- Harvey's boat,
the "iolair mara,"

Is a 75-foot motor sailer
built in california in 1967--

A rare find,
as its tri-hull design,

6-foot draft,
and 3,000 nautical mile range

Means it can operate
with wind power in the sails,

But also holds a lot of fuel

And can take expeditions
all around the globe.

- One of the things
that happened

After harvey took control of
steven's father's estate is,

The boat that harvey owned
and was docked in san pedro

Started to undergo
rapid repairs,

And not just any repairs.

I mean, it was being
completely refurbished--

New teak decks,
flat-screen television,

New sails,
brand-new navigation system,

Stainless steel railing--

Just immaculate touches
to this boat.

- Steven's friends said
that harvey was

Planning to take this boat
and sail around the world.

And steven is piqued by that.

Like, wow, what a great
adventure that's gonna be.

Harvey even invites steven.

Hey, why don't you be part
of our crew

When we sail around the world?

You can be
the gourmet chef onboard.

Steven is like,
oh, that sounds fantastic.

He would fit right in.

This is a great new adventure.

He's all in.

And so steven moves onboard
the yacht in November of 2003.

- Steven told me he was
excited about this project.

He was taking courses
to become a chef on the boat.

And when the boat was restored
in two, three years,

They were going to stock it up

And start sailing
around the world.

♪ ♪

- I asked steven's friends,

Was there anything strange
about how he handled his money?

And they said, yes.

They said he didn't have
any money.

And I go, what do you mean,
he didn't have any money?

[indistinct chatter]

The friend told me
that they would meet

At a restaurant,
and they would exchange--

This time I'm gonna pay,
next time you're gonna pay.

And one time in 2005,
they went,

And steven didn't have
any money.

And she inquired,
why don't you have any money?

You have $2 million,
and you don't have

Two cents you can rub
between your fingers.

And steven's reply was,
harvey has my money.

Harvey put it
in an offshore account.

And we're gonna go and get it

When we go on this trip
around the world.

So the red flags were up
that something was wrong.

♪ ♪

- The last person to see
steven was one of his friends,

And that occurred
the first week of may 2006.

And in the course
of talking with his friend,

His friend says,
steven, what are you gonna do

About this situation?
And that's when steven says,

Okay, yep, I am going
to confront harvey.

[dramatic music]

I'm gonna ask him
what's going on with the boat,

With our trip around the world?

Where is my money?
How can I get access to it?

I'm gonna get some answers
to all of this.

- It became pretty obvious
that there was only one person

That I needed to talk with,

And he was the owner
of the boat

That steven was last seen on,

Harvey morrow.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

- After learning
that harvey morrow had control

Of steven's finances and that
steven planned to confront him

In the days leading up
to his death,

Detectives need
to question morrow

And search the sailboat
where the two men lived

For evidence connected
to steven williams' murder.

♪ ♪

- Harvey may have had something
to do with steven's death.

So I got a search warrant,

And we get to san pedro
where the yacht is kept.

We found the yacht,
but the yacht was empty.

There's no one there.

♪ ♪

The first thing we did was
examine where steven lived

On the boat and where harvey's
living space was on the yacht.

The one thing that struck me
right away was,

The boat was immaculate.

It was clean.

It didn't look like
anyone had ever lived there.

Yet I knew steven had been
on that boat.

- Investigators are looking
for evidence

That can place steven
on the yacht.

They're looking
for blood evidence.

They're looking
for personal belongings.

None of his belongings
are there.

They don't find
any blood evidence.

They're coming up with nothing.

♪ ♪

- Then I started looking
at the electronic equipment.

And one of the things
we found was

A manual
to a handheld garmin gps.

I put that
inside the evidence bag.

- But they don't find
the actual unit,

Just the operating manual.

- Gps is a common way
for sailors to navigate,

And they can record and store

All movement made
by the vessel.

Detectives hope
to recover the unit,

As it can determine
whether the "iolair mara"

Was ever near the area where
steven's body was dumped.

- I remember thinking,
if you find a handheld gps,

That will be your ticket.

Then I found a ledger
that showed how much money

Harvey had spent in that yacht,

And it was
more than $2 million,

Which is relatively

The same amount of money
steven inherited.

Now I'm thinking, was harvey
using steven's money

To refurbish and redo his boat?

♪ ♪

I wanted to find
harvey morrow.

And a lady walked up
to me and said,

"are you guys searching
that boat?"

And I said, "absolutely."

I go, "I'm trying
to find harvey morrow."

And she goes,
"he was just standing there

Watching you guys."

He saw me looking,
and he got in his truck,

And he drove away.

Right then I knew,
if he's running from me,

I'm on the right track.

Now the manhunt is on.

[suspenseful music]

♪ ♪

Back at the office,

We contacted
his cell phone company.

- Harvey's phone records show
that he left los angeles.

He drove to las vegas

And then destroyed the phone
because the records stopped.

- He must have realized that,
uh-oh, they're looking at me.

I'm getting rid of it.

So now I needed the cell phone
company engineers

To help me prove that the day
when steven was killed,

These two men were together
out there on that yacht.

- We found out,
steven called harvey's phone

At about 1:00 in the afternoon
on may 4, 2006.

Steven's phone used a tower
on the mainland.

And then later in the afternoon
at about 4:00,

Both steven and harvey's phone
got communications,

And both used a tower
on catalina island.

- So I asked the engineers,
can you tell me

Where that boat would have been
if they pinged off the tower?

And the engineer said,
absolutely.

Gave me a diagram,
and they put it

On the back side
of catalina island.

Both of those
cell phones pinged

Off the same cell tower,

And then steven's phone
stopped transmitting.

♪ ♪

- The next morning,
there was only communication

On harvey's phone.

But then
the detective sees something

That is very unusual.

Harvey morrow calls steven
31 times

In the weeks leading up
to his death.

Never called him again
the day after, not one time.

- So now I have
the cell towers,

And I have all the other data
and information

That says,
these two men were together.

I have a witness that said,
hey, steven told me that he was

Going to do a trip around
the world with harvey morrow.

And I have the crustaceans
found on steven's body that

Are only found on the back
side of catalina island.

So at this point, there's
enough to arrest harvey morrow

For the murder
of steven williams.

♪ ♪

The next morning,
I went to the print media,

And I said, harvey morrow is
a extreme person of interest.

- They get the word out,
get harvey's picture out.

We want to talk to this guy,
harvey morrow.

He could be anywhere,

And they need
the public's help.

♪ ♪

- They said that
they had evidence,

Harvey was the one
who shot steven.

But this was his friend,
or supposed friend.

I had no idea why.

You know, did they just
go out drinking

And have a fight,
and this happened?

You're left with a lot
of unanswered questions.

♪ ♪

- I--I can't even express
the anger I felt.

Wanted that guy caught

Because he took
a very dear friend.

- Everyone I talked to said,
harvey's the type of guy

That's gonna go
in the caribbean.

If you're gonna look for him,
you're gonna find him

Down in the british
virgin islands somewhere

On a big yacht.

All I can do is continue
contacting everyone,

Getting information
everywhere.

I actually contacted
the state department,

But I couldn't find him.

Months later,
I'm looking for harvey morrow,

And every day
I walk to my desk.

The first thing I look to see
if I have any messages.

If the red light is on,
I have a message.

And this particular day,
I walk in,

And the red light's on.

And I listen to the voicemail,

And I distinctly remember
it saying,

"I'm from the cascade county
sheriff's department

"in great falls, montana.

"if you're looking
for harvey morrow,

You need to call me.
I know where he is."

♪ ♪

[dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- Almost four months
into steven b. Williams'

Murder investigation,
sergeant clark received

A voicemail
from montana authorities

Who have a potential lead
on harvey morrow's whereabouts.

- This changed everything.

I called back
the cascade county sheriff.

He said, you're looking
for harvey morrow?

I said, yes.

He goes,
he's in cascade county.

Everyone said he would go
where the water is warm,

Where there would be
a lot of rich people.

Who would think for a minute
that he would go to montana?

It's totally opposite,
which my mind told me,

Yeah, this guy is really
being smart.

♪ ♪

- Before they called
our detectives,

The sheriff in montana
got a call

From a guy named joe parsetich.

Joe's a former police officer,

So he has a mind for things
that don't make sense.

Joe said harvey was
in great falls, montana,

Working at
a used car dealership.

♪ ♪

- I told them,
on September 8, 2006,

Had a gentleman show up on our
dealership that just got hired.

He said his name was
harvey morrow.

He told me he came
from a stockbroker background,

That he has
a very beautiful home

Over on the gulf of mexico.

I was curious why
he would come to montana,

Leaving the gulf of mexico,

And secure a job
as a used car salesman.

And he said, well,
he had to get as far away

From large bodies of water
as possible.

He said,
"my wife took our yacht

"out onto the gulf of mexico
with some friends of hers,

"and a storm ensued,
yacht capsized,

And, you know, she
and her friends all perished."

Well, I know enough
about the gulf

That it didn't make
a lot of sense.

I guess you could say,
once a cop, always a cop,

Because my instinct's saying
something's not right.

When I got off work,
I went on to google,

Put in "harvey morrow,"
wanting to find out

More about this story
or how he lost his wife.

To my surprise,
I found only one posting

With his name on there,
and it was by channel 4 news

Out of denver, that he was
a person of interest

Regarding a murder
of steven b. Williams

That took place in california.

[suspenseful music]

The hair was standing up
on the back of my neck.

And my gut was telling me,

I think I really have
something here.

I immediately called our
local sheriff and asked him

To contact los angeles county
sheriff's department.

♪ ♪

- Now the clock is ticking

Because it's just a hop, skip,
and a jump

To go across
the canadian border.

At any minute, I'm thinking,
if harvey even suspects

That I'm looking for him,
he's gonna leave.

My concern was, it's gonna
take me at least two weeks

To get this extradition
in order.

So at this point,
I have to rely on joe

To basically string harvey on.

I was already in communications
with cascade county

And the u.S. Marshals office

To make sure that
they work together

To make sure
harvey stayed where he was.

♪ ♪

- The detectives flew out
to montana

And made contact with joe.

- When the homicide detectives
arrived,

I said, I'll let you know
when it's safe to come in

And effectuate the arrest.

So I coordinated the sting
by simply calling in

All of the salespeople
off the car lot.

When harvey got back
from lunch, I said,

Harvey, one of the customers

That you showed a car to
is coming back.

Go out there, open up the hood,
get it ready,

So when she shows up, you'll be
prepared to do a walk-around.

At that point, I was
sitting calmly at my desk.

I called
the sheriff's department,

Gave them a description.

Here's the coat
harvey's wearing.

He's gonna be
in the front row.

All of the other employees
were off the lot.

♪ ♪

- The u.S. Marshal and
the cascade county sheriff,

All they had to do was
walk up and say,

Harvey, there's some guys
from california

That want to talk to you.

Put your hands
behind your back.

You're under arrest.

- After they placed him
under arrest,

They took him
to the local station,

And that's where they began
interrogating harvey.

- Harvey was so arrogant.

Once he realized
I was focusing in on him,

He pretty much leaned back
and says,

I think I better get a lawyer.

- At this point,
harvey morrow is extradited

Back to los angeles,

Where he will stand trial
for murder.

- I was thrilled when I heard
that they had arrested harvey.

And I just said, I hope
they throw the book at him.

- This was a complete
circumstantial evidence case.

There were no eyewitnesses
or earwitnesses to the killing.

In fact, there was
no crime scene.

So we knew that we were gonna
have some challenges

Convincing 12 people
beyond a reasonable doubt

That harvey was involved.

♪ ♪

- This case is still going on.
Harvey's in custody.

And by this time,
this case is in the news media,

And everybody's talking
about it.

[phone rings]

And I got a call
from the commodore

Of the los angeles yacht club,
and he said,

"I found a handheld gps
in one of my cabinets

Inside the yacht club."

[camera shutter clicking]

So I said, what kind
of gps did you find?

He said, a garmin c60.

Well, wouldn't you know it?

When I initially searched
harvey's boat, when he fled,

There was a manual
for a garmin c60.

This handheld gps can show
exactly when the boat left,

Where the boat went,
and when it went back to shore.

♪ ♪

It could be the evidence
I was looking for

To prosecute harvey morrow

For a capital punishment
homicide.

♪ ♪

[tense music]

- While harvey morrow is
in custody awaiting trial,

Investigators locate
the portable gps

That was missing from his boat.

They believe this is the key

To connecting all
of the circumstantial evidence

And securing his conviction
for steven's murder.

♪ ♪

- Once the data was downloaded
from the gps, it showed,

On may 4th,
the day steven was killed,

The "iolair mara"
leaving slip 6 from san pedro,

Which is where harvey's boat
was docked.

It went out to catalina island.

It went around to the back
side of the island.

It meanders there for a while,

And then it comes racing back
to its slip.

That trip and the timing

From when it left san pedro
to catalina and back

Corresponds with
the cell phone evidence.

My theory of the case,
based on the evidence,

Is that
when steven and harvey got

To the back side
of catalina island,

And they had a confrontation
about steven's money,

At some point while there,

Harvey walked up
behind steven,

Shot him in the back
of the head...

[gunshot]

And his body immediately
went overboard.

♪ ♪

And it sunk.

I believe that at that point,

Harvey started to look
for the body.

And the reason I theorized that
that happened

Is because if you look
at the gps mapping,

You can see
the boat meandering.

It almost looks like
it's searching for something.

And it does that
before, finally,

It turns and races back
to san pedro.

- I looked at that and went,
oh, my goodness.

Absolutely, positively, we can
prove beyond a reasonable doubt

That harvey morrow killed
steven williams

And then fled.

But it took a lot of work

And a lot of time
to prepare the documents

And continue forward
with the trial.

- Los angeles county, with
over 10 million residents,

Is the largest jurisdiction
in the country,

So it sometimes takes years
before a case goes to trial.

- The trial gets underway

And bombshell was
in opening statements.

- The surprise came
in the form

Of the defense telling the jury
that they had a promissory note

Between steven's father
and harvey morrow's father.

And this promissory note was
for an amount of money

That would explain how it was

That harvey possessed steven's
money and why he was able

To spend that money
without it being a crime.

- The defense says,
he didn't steal money.

This was a loan.
He was owed this money.

- I'm looking at my partner,
and he's looking at me,

And I'm thinking,
wait a minute.

The document had
to be forged and fake.

- The da actually wanted
a mistrial to be declared

So that they could
investigate the signature.

So a mistrial was declared.

- A mistrial is essentially
the court stopping the trial

And starting from scratch.

- I was really concerned.
That was on the lowest points,

Because a lot of people put
a lot of effort

In this case
to prove this case up.

- That mistrial really
threw me for a loop,

And it made me angry.

We were all worried
he'd get away with it.

- Despite a mistrial
being declared,

Prosecutors still had
another opportunity

To retry harvey morrow
on these murder charges.

- I was able to look
at every document,

Every driver's license
that steven's father,

Bailey williams, had
for 10, 15, 20 years.

We compared it
with that document,

And it was no match.

Obviously, it was a forgery.

- This was evidence that

Harvey morrow was not owed
this money.

- After probably
about six weeks of trial,

The jury walked in, handed
the verdicts over to the judge.

When I heard the word "guilty"
on first-degree murder,

I had a sigh of relief,

Because at that point,
I knew at least,

He was being held responsible

For the murder
of steven b. Williams.

- Harvey morrow was sentenced
to life in prison

Without the possibility
of parole.

- Harvey was somebody who liked

The open spaces
and the freedom.

So to me,
spending the rest of your life

In a jail cell
is real justice.

I much prefer that
to the death penalty.

[buzzer blares]

- I am thrilled
he's not getting out.

He'll die in prison.

Justice has been served.

- After being shot
in cold blood

And falling into the ocean,

Coastal eddies moved steven
to a location

Where his body
could be discovered.

With the overconfidence
of a true con man,

Harvey morrow never dreamed

The handheld gps
would be found.

But once recovered, it revealed
morrow's homicidal moves,

Led investigators to the truth,

And landed the killer
behind bars.

- This is a tragic end

To somebody who had
more life to live

And more life to give.

Steven was a person
who went through life

Caring about other people.

And I think he would like
to be remembered

As that type of person.

- My heart still aches

When I think about
what happened to steven.

I miss the fact that he's not
on this earth anymore.

And I miss my friend.

He deserved better.
