in the garden with a workman.

- We're making some changes.

I was hoping for something less drastic,
but I hope the guests will like it.

It takes a while to get used new things
as I know from being in America.

- But you are from around here?
- Yes. From Sindal.

I'm sure you've heard the story
of how it came to be a hotel.

Mr. Madsen told me a little.

It was the home of a receiver of wreck
if ships ran aground.

The figurehead is in memory
of a large ship that sank -

- just off the coast
in the worst storm ever.

Those who helped risked their lives.

Miraculously, everyone was saved
and stayed at the farm for the winter.

That's when my husband's grandfather
got the idea -

- that if people were staying here
anyway, why not make it a hotel?

- So he built this?
- No, he wasn't that talented.

But among the passengers was
a Norwegian architect.

He offered to design the hotel.
He designed everything.

The wallpaper and mouldings.

All the decor and the dining room.
Even the sea buckthorn behind the piano.

They wanted to pay him,
but he refused.

He said it was a gift
because they had saved his life.

I don't know about you, but
the first time I came here, I felt -

- that this was a very special house.

I couldn't explain it until I heard
about the Norwegian architect.

Then I understood that
this is a house that is passed on.

To us.
