for the kind stranger

who persuaded him not to jump off
a bridge exactly six years ago.

Jonny Benjamin joins us to talk
about his mission to find Mike.

He was determined
not to let me jump.

So he was just an ordinary bloke
walking across Waterloo Bridge?

I just am so grateful to him
for stopping and talking

and, um...giving me
a different outlook that day,

cos it really was the moment
that my recovery started.

Is it just a case of
just wanting to thank him?

What we know about this man
is he was on Waterloo Bridge

in London on the 14th of January.

He just happened to be walking past.

We don't know if that was the
regular thing that he does

or whether he just happened
to be in London

at that precise moment in time.

Not only was the hashtag Find Mike
trending,

but it touched the
hearts of thousands of people.

I just can't believe the response.

I've had messages
from all over the world.

It is just phenomenal.

So I've just been on breakfast TV
for the second day in a row.

They actually asked me back because
it got such a massive response

after my first appearance.

It's 8:53 and our guest this morning
has a remarkable tale to tell

and he wants your help.

Jonny Benjamin is looking for
the complete stranger

who talked him out of

throwing himself off
Waterloo Bridge in London.

My memory from that day is so hazy.

Hearing from someone who was saying,
you know, "It does get better,"

was the turning point - no-one
had ever said that to me before.

What a story - just extraordinary.

Was he an older guy, younger guy,
same sort of age?

No, he was a young guy.
You know, I was 20 at the time.

He was around my age,
just a few years older than me.

He just reminded me of myself,
really, and what I could be.

The search for the stranger who
saved the life of this man...

He hopes his appeal will help jog
someone's memory.

I'm just overwhelmed
by...the response.

I mean, I can't really...
I can't really fathom it.

I don't really know
where this campaign is going.

But it's...it's going.

Within a few hours, someone comes
forward saying that they are Mike.

They remember talking Jonny down
off Waterloo Bridge.

Then a few hours later,
another person comes forward

saying THEY are Mike.

And then another.

And another.

Within a few days,
Jonny has 38 possible Mikes.

I expected maybe the one person
to come forward

and say, "This was me,"

but I actually had quite a number
of people come forward.

You have to be really careful
with Jonny meeting those people

and have quite a high suspicion
that they are Mike.

So we'd hope that you'd have lots of
Mikes who had helped someone

through a similar situation,

but it might be you've got people
that have their own agenda

or are just sort of rolling along
with the sort of media interest.

While some of the people
claiming to be Mike

turn out to not be
quite as they seem,

the majority are ordinary people

who have helped someone else
in distress.

After some investigation,

Jonny asks five of the most likely
candidates to send in their photo.

I can't believe how
nerve-wracking this is.

It's just, you know...

It's just the man that
you thought about for so long

and the man who's like sort of...

had such a profound impact on you

and you could suddenly be about to
recognise that person is...

..scary.

I'm going back to a place that...

It was the worst point of my life

and I've got to go back there

and...it's not easy.

I can see myself on the train.

I can see myself on the train,

You know, on the way up to do it,
and I can see myself on the train,

and I'm already going back
to that state of mind

where I was out of control.

Not out of control, cos... No.

I just need
to get it over and done with.

So...that's definitely not Mike.

OK, c'mon, c'mon.

My God, it's not him.

I don't know. I thought I'd know
as soon as I saw that picture.

I thought...

I know this one's definitely not
him, cos he is too old and I know,

I know he wasn't that old.

God it makes you sort of go,
like, you know,

cos sometimes in some interviews
this week, people have said,

"Is it all in your head?"

And no, he wasn't. I know it wasn't.

It's silly to think that I'm just
gonna immediately recognise Mike,

maybe, because...
because I was in that...

..that, that, that...
place of despair

that I've completely blocked
everything for six years.

You know, maybe it's going to
take a lot more

to remember him
than just the photos.

Before I started this campaign,
I never anticipated that

so many people would come forward
and say,

"I've actually stopped
someone from taking their life."

I just thought that Mike
would come along and would say,

"Here I am." But no.
I've got so many leads

and it's quite remarkable,

because it goes to show
that there's many Mikes out there.

Jonny is not sure
if any of the Mikes he's heard from

are the man he's looking for

and turns to the police for help
with the identification.

Oh, hi there. I'm trying to
track down the police report

that might have been made after an
incident that I was involved in.

The thing is, I don't know the
officers that were involved in it.

This was an incident six years ago.

I just wanted to find out
if it was any way possible

to get the details
from the police report.

So the report might not
even exist at all?

Yeah, but you've definitely got
their name,

haven't you, in the report?

Just the number,
not the actual name?

I didn't realise you didn't have
his name, just his number,

and that doesn't even work, so...

But there'd be no way I could see
that log because of data protection?

If we think about everything
that's going on for Jonny,

it's really not surprising
that his emotional memory,

his procedural memory,

also isn't really recording things
for him accurately.

So I really don't think
it's surprising

that he doesn't recall the events and
it's probably a protective mechanism.

Out of all the messages
Jonny receives,

there's one that really stands out.

"Hi, Jonny. I might be wrong,
but a guy at medical school

"around that time talked someone down
off Waterloo Bridge.

"His name was Michael Samy -
Mike Sammington.

"It may not be your guy,
but either way, I'm glad you're OK

"and I hope you find
your guardian angel."

So what do you actually remember
your colleague

saying to you about that day?

Um...so our medical school
had a mixed hockey club.

Now, on the particular day in 2008,

we were talking about
one of our colleagues, Mike.

The week before, he'd actually talked
someone down off Waterloo Bridge.

And this led to him being
nicknamed "Good Sam"

or "The Good Samaritan",

which is a name that went
on the back of his shirt

and kind of stuck with him
through medical school.

How old was he at the time?

I'm not sure exactly, but he will
have been kind of early 20s.

A tall, thin, sort of fairly fit
and athletic chap,

had kind of curly, wavy hair.
Dark hair, dark eyes.

Oh, right, OK. Cos I've got such
a poor recollection of...

I've got no recollection.

I imagine it was the last thing
on your mind at the time. Yeah.

Ruth's story matches up
to what Jonny can remember,

and he asks to see the photos
of Dr Mike.

So that's the chap.

I don't know whether
this is ringing any bells.

It's probably difficult for you
to know. Yeah, I just don't...

I mean, it would be interesting
to speak to Mike

and see whether he recognises you,
as that's probably more likely...

Yeah, that's true.
..that he'd recognise you.

A bit more digging reveals that
Dr Mike lives in Wolverhampton.

Jonny sends him a message
and he agrees to meet him in person.

This guy could be my Mike.

His name is actually Mike

and there's a few details
in our stories that match up.

Um...

He was on Waterloo Bridge
beginning of January 2008

and he was on his way
to medical school

and stopped someone from taking
their life on Waterloo Bridge.

It could be me.

So, yep, I'd like to find out.

It's strange trying to think back

and I was looking through...
Quite frantically reading through

your Twitter page and looking at the
various news articles and things.

And it kind of struck me quite...
as very, very familiar, really.

I remember I actually froze still
for a moment

with quite a bit of fear surrounding
what I was about to see happen

in front of me.

And I thought, OK, wait a minute.
We're all just staring.

Are we just going to watch this
person kill himself in front of us

and take his own life?

I think I said something like,
"Sir, you don't want to do this."

In response to that,
he didn't say anything.

He looked me in the eyes

with an extremely...upset,
kind of solemn face

and just looked at me for a moment,
held a gaze.

And I remember really feeling upset
by what I actually saw,

and him letting go with one hand

and swinging round
so he was facing the water.

And at that moment,
realising he's going to do this -

he's going to jump off.

I remember feeling,
I have to stop this.

I jumped in and grabbed him.

He lost his grip
and then I dragged him over

and he was trembling on the ground
when I actually pulled him over.

I just remember him
being extremely shocked

and just distraught on the floor,
really.

Now, I don't know how much of that
is something you can relate to or...?

Can I say it's such
an amazing thing you did -

to do that and to have the courage
to do that is incredible.

I think there's some details
that are different

between yours and mine.

Yeah, and reading up on you,
on some of the deeper things...

I did juggle...
Could it be me he's looking for?

I did see quite a few discrepancies
between the details you gave.

I just wondered how much of that
was recalled by us,

and how much of that was...
what actually happened.

I just think that even if
I don't get a chance to find

the person that I'm looking for
and thank him personally,

at least I've thanked you.

I'm overjoyed at the response
this whole campaign has got

in terms of people coming together
and, um...supporting,

supporting this. It's just...

I can't get my head around it.

His words actually
prompted my recovery.

Now I need your help to find him.

He could have just kept on
walking by, but his actions,

they changed my life.

Find Mike tops the trends
in 25 different countries

and the hashtag becomes more
popular than Beyonce and Obama.

But despite the interest in his
story, the trail has gone cold.

I think it could be very difficult
for Jonny

if he's not able to find Mike,

because I think he's pinned a lot
on finding Mike.

You can imagine that it might
leave him vulnerable,

it might leave him feeling
like he can't move forward.

I was so sure
when I launched the campaign

just that one person would come
forward and say,

"Yeah, it was me."

I get delusions and...

You know...

I think I can...

I think I can change the world,
in my head.

Something tells me, you know...

"You're some kind of superhuman."

And of course, in reality, I'm not.

Mike, he could have, as I say,
could have walked by.

Hundreds of people
probably did walk by,

but he stopped
and took that moment

and because of the decision that
he made at that time on that day,

that location,
life for Jonny, for us,

for all the people that are affected
by what Jonny does

and, you know, his family,
his friends, his colleagues,

his followers,
and all of that sort of thing

were affected by that one decision.

While the leads have dried up,
the messages continue to pile in

from people coming forward
for other reasons.

"Hi, Jonny. Just wanted to wish you
luck in finding Mike.

"You have obviously come a long way
in the past six years

"and I admire what you are doing

"to educate the world
about mental health.

"Our son Richard took his own life
on the 14th of February 2008

"at the age of 21.

"If only someone had found
the right words."

"Since seeing your Facebook message,

"you have been on my mind
all day.

"My husband took his own life
the 24th January 2012.

"He had lost hope
and could not see any other way.

"I had no idea that I was going
to walk into that

"on a Tuesday night,
to find my husband.

"I believe to this day
that I am still in shock.

"He left behind myself and an
18-month-old daughter, Olivia,

"and our worlds came crashing down.

"It was too late to save my husband,

"but thank God
that man helped you that day.

"I hope that life has been kind
to you since that day

"and you have reflected on life
and the impact that way out

"would have had on others. I hope
you find the man you're looking for

"and I just wanted to also send you
a huge hug through an email."

There's one particular message
that Jonny can't ignore.

"Hi, Jonny. Just a little note to say
I've seen your quest to find the man

"who saved your life and it really
struck a chord in me.

"Back in 2008, my twin brother Steven
jumped off Tower Bridge

"on our 27th birthday in April.

"I've often wondered if anyone could
have saved him or talked him down,

"but after years of research, I know
that trying to find that answer

"is an impossible task."

It just feels...

Yeah, it feels more than just about
finding this stranger for me.

It's...

..it's about...connecting
with other people.

Compelled by her story,
Jonny decides to visit her.

I carry a lot of guilt as someone
who was left behind from suicide.

You carry a lot of guilt from that.

It hurts, because there's a lot of
people left with questions, you see.

But I guess that at the time
you were standing there,

you weren't thinking about that,
were you?

No, no, no, no.
Your head's just in...

such a confusing place.

The pain is so kind of intense

that nothing else can come into that
kind of wall that's surrounding you.

You can't see anything...

No matter who it is, you just can't
see over that wall.

Do you feel like you couldn't have
gone to anyone

leading up to you standing there?

The thing was, I didn't want to
disappoint people.

That's the thing.
It sounds strange, doesn't it?

I didn't want to disappoint
the people around me

and say how I was really feeling.

And I thought...

Um... Oh, yeah.

I didn't want to see their faces
and see their reactions to that,

knowing that I didn't
want to be here any more.

It sounds like absolutely
what Steven would say,

because he was so far out of
my reach, I couldn't get to him.

He just closed up.

And now...
I mean, everyone is different,

but through talking to you, you both
went through the same things.

It's just so sad that, you know,
people can just isolate themselves

and turn their back on people
that want to help,

not through any kind of spite,

but because you're embarrassed
or you're afraid.

I get angry, because I wish
he'd given me the chance, you know?

Sure. And I wish he'd just
said something,

instead of going into his shell.

I know that he did it around
our birthday, which hurts me.

Because for ever,
for ever and ever and ever,

my birthday will be
tainted by the death of a twin

and it's like losing an arm.

Can I say something? Yeah.

Hope you don't mind. No, do.

It's...

It's just the one thing I remember
in going to the bridge

is that I kept saying to myself
more than anything else...

..more than anything else, I
don't want my family to feel guilty.

That was the one thing that...

..I was so desperately
clinging on to.

I just don't want them to feel
at all responsible or guilty.

That was the thing...

The whole way,
that journey was like...

I hope this is all right
to say this?

I think it's making me feel
a lot better.

I always wondered why
he didn't leave me a note.

You know? And so many people said he
wasn't in that headspace right then

to even leave a note.

Did you plan...?

Today I'm gonna die -
is that what you thought?

I did, yeah.

I did the night before.

Yeah. I did the night before.

I planned it all out.

I just got to the stage where...

I saw the only way that I
could achieve peace was...

Because you're so desperate
to find peace, you know.

How can you hide that?

This is what... I'm amazed.
How can you hide that?

How can you just hide that
from anyone?

I just... I was scared,
so I didn't tell them,

and, yeah, there were so many
opportunities that evening

and that next morning
to tell people,

but as I was saying,
I had that in my head.

I saw that
as the only way out of it.

I just couldn't see past
that moment on the bridge.

It was...

I was sort of drawn towards it.

No-one's ever spoken to me
like this.

You're giving me an insight
that I haven't seen.

As long as it's all right?

Yeah, of course. I just don't want
you to get upset. No, no, not at all.

It's good for me
to talk about it as well.

Are you ever scared
that it will come back,

or is that something that's...?

Do you know what, I've been suicidal
again since that day,

but now I say...

Sorry. I say,
"This is how I'm feeling."

Because I know that I've
done it before and can do it again.

But you know to ask for help now?

I know that...

I can say the words, "I'm feeling
suicidal at the moment" and...

and that's the difference.
That's what I couldn't say before.

Having all but given up hope
of finding Mike,

Jonny checks a message in his inbox.

Although his name's not Mike,
everything else finally fits.

For six years, Jonny has been
dreaming of the moment

when he might meet the man
who helped turn his life around.

Since launching his search,

his story has been followed by
319 million people around the world.

It has produced leads
from far and wide

that he's pursued
and ultimately discarded.

Now he's about to meet the man
he thinks could be his Mike.

This guy is probably
the strongest lead

and is potentially the man
that I'm looking for,

so there's a lot riding on today.

It's just a very surreal
sort of feeling

and, um...

I'm petrified, to be honest.

I can't imagine how it must feel,
you know, to be reliving it,

it was such a hazy memory,

and I can see you there
on the side of the bridge.

I completely had a blank
of what you look like.

It was really cold that day, mate.
I don't know if you remember.

Do you remember
how cold it was? Yeah, I remember.

I saw you sitting there
on the bridge and, you know,

I knew straight away.
Like, it came into my vision,

and I knew
what was happening straight away.

And I didn't think I'd get to you

because there was
quite a distance between us.

And I kept walking and walking
and walking

and there were people
walking past you all the time.

And then I got up to you and...

I don't know if you want me
to tell you what happened.

Yeah, no, no...

I sort of have a memory of me going
to, like, the middle of the bridge

and stepping over the barrier
and standing on the edge

and my hands were behind.

I don't know if that's...

Like this. Like, I mean...

I walked up to you and I said,
"Why are you sitting on the bridge?"

You know? And you told me straight
away you were going to jump.

And I just thought,

"There's no way I'm gonna
let this guy jump off today.

"There's no way,
not if I'm standing here."

You know... And then you started to
tell me about yourself.

Did I? What did I say?

Yeah, cos I asked you.
You told me you'd run away.

Did I say where I'd run away from?

You said you'd run away
from a hospital.

I'd just been diagnosed
with schizophrenia a month before

I ran away to the bridge,

and...I was put into hospital and...

It was such a scary time.

I didn't know that I was ill.
I had no idea that I was ill.

I was hearing a voice in my head.

I was having delusions
and I thought I was...

Do you know The Truman Show? Yeah.

I thought I was in own version
of The Truman Show.

This had been going on for 10 years.

It got to the point where I couldn't
cope and couldn't look after myself.

I didn't realise I was so ill.
And, um...

Basically, I had a psychosis

and thought I was being possessed
by the devil.

And I...didn't tell family
and friends.

I just thought that the voice
I was hearing was real.

So did you think,
"This is not right,"

or were you like, "This is fine,
because this is the way it is?"

You didn't know any better?
I didn't know any better.

I thought that everyone heard
a voice in their heads,

so when the psychiatrist said to me,

"It's all in your head.
It's not real,"

it was such a massive shock.

I was like, "Yeah,
but we all hear a voice, don't we?"

It's just that I'd been
maybe granted a...

I thought I was hearing the devil,

so I just thought
I'd been granted a bad voice.

But he was like,
"No, it's all in your head."

I couldn't take it in.

I felt like my life had been a lie
and I didn't know who I was.

It was just such a difficult time.
I was petrified.

But...yeah...

..it was you saying to me,
"You can get through it."

Suddenly, like, my whole
perspective changed

and I was like...

This stranger that I'd never met and
who doesn't know anything about me

is telling me I'll be OK
and I can get through it

and just stopping,
just talking to me,

just giving me that time of day
and saying to me,

"There's another way,
and it can get better."

Honestly, from that day...

It restored my faith in humanity
and I wouldn't be here

if you didn't stop.

I think that's
the most incredible thing,

which I'm trying to
get my head around.

You know...

It's nice to know that somehow
I've made a difference.

You have. You've made
an incredible difference.

It must have been awful
for you, mate. You know?

You know, it's testament.

You know? Yeah.

It's so strange, cos
it feels kind of like we're friends

I've met you.

It feels like that chapter
is almost closed now.

Those six years ago.
Everything that I went through.

It's a complete contrast
to the feelings

that I had that day
when I first met Neil.

Complete contrast.

I was completely at rock bottom.

And now, I'm so happy.

I feel like I've gone full circle.

It's just amazing to be able
to say that, I think.

When you've gone through something
that's such a bad period

and you can look back and realise...

I realise how sort of...how far
I've come, I guess.

Every day, more than
a quarter of a million people

pass through Waterloo.

Sometimes when we are
part of a crowd

and we see someone in trouble,
it's easier to walk on by.

But we actually all have a choice.

The truth is,
any of us could be a Mike.

Though there are times
I still struggle,

I know that I can
overcome any adversity in life.

This is all thanks to one man who
showed me that life does get better.

Now I want to offer that same
message to others who need it.

That in spite of the hard times,
life really is worth living.
