here with the [bleep] rhinos.

I am extremely nervous today.

My first impression
of the Kalahari desert

is it's very chilly.

So that worries me a little bit.

[Michael] Kalahari literally
means "Land of the Thirst,"

and I believe it 100 percent.
Everything out here seems bone dry.

[narrator] The mighty
Kalahari desert,

The largest stretch of uninterrupted
sand anywhere on Earth.

Late fall sees
virtually no rainfall,

with temperatures
peaking at 100 degrees

and plummeting into the fifties.

But Jaclin and Michael
are entering the challenge

as a sudden cold front has caused
the mercury to drop into the forties.

This time of year also
brings violent wind storms,

reaching speeds of
up to 30 miles an hour,

making it even
harder to survive.

[Jaclin] I'm extremely
nervous about the lions,

There's lots of bones, it's
a feeding ground out here.

[narrator] This section of the
Kalahari has only one pan of water

for 30 miles around,

which attracts aggressive
3000 pound black rhinos,

- jackals, hyenas, and desert lions...
- [hyena squeals]

- ...that have adapted to this unique environment.
- [roaring]

Prey here is scarce, so the
Kalahari lions are smaller,

and because they carry
less weight, they are faster

and more aggressive.

[growls]

This is it. Now or never.

In my partner, I'm really looking for
somebody who's gonna be mentally strong.

Everything out
here is dangerous.

I don't really wanna
be out here by myself,

you know, I do need
somebody to watch my back.

I just love the outdoors,
I'm super excited.

[Jaclin] I am a Criminal
Defense Paralegal.

People generally
think that I'm a girly girl.

But deep down,
below all this makeup

and the nail polish, and the
professional edge, I'm a badass

that loves to be outdoors.

Me and my kids, we do shelters
all the time and make little forts.

I have fire building skills,

but I've never killed
anything in my entire life,

or trapped anything
successfully.

And I'm an animal lover, so I have a lot of
things that I'm going to have to overcome

during this challenge.

I have a little girl
that looks up to me,

and I don't think that she
views me as a strong protector

like she does her father.

I'm a warrior, and my
daughter needs to know that.

I hope that you make it through.

I want to show her that I could
be a badass just like daddy,

and that if you put your mind
to something, you can do it.

[narrator] Jaclin is
tough and resilient,

but she's never had to
kill her own food to survive.

She starts with a primitive
survival rating, or PSR, of 6.3.

- So how about you?
- Trapping and shelter building.

- I work on the water, so, um...
- Okay.

...I'm not used to this at all.

But I love being
outdoors. I love adventure.

[Jaclin] Awesome.

[Michael] I work in the
maritime industry as a captain

as well as an engineer.

The reason why I'm out
here doing this challenge.

is I've had some
adversity in my life.

I have always been
determined to come out

bigger, better,
faster, stronger,

and not let the things that have
happened to me in my past affect me now.

I'm going to be tested here.

And that's pretty much
why I want to do this.

As a young adult, I
broke both my hands

and all my fingers severed off,

and I begged them to reattach
them and put them back

so that I could have
use of my hands.

It took about a year
to rebound from that.

It made me mentally stronger.

That determination is what I'm
going to bring here to this challenge.

[narrator] Michael has
overcome adversity before,

but as a deckhand
on a fishing boat,

he has no
experience in a desert.

He begins with a PSR of 6.5.

Well, looks like we're
in this together, it's...

I have a machete for us to use.

in handy, uh, paracord.

[narrator] Michael and Jaclin
have also been given a pot

to boil water,
and a fire starter

to help ward off predators that
will be sharing their water hole.

So... I don't see much water.

Absolutely. So it looks like we're going
to need to go north to find the water...

- Oh, yeah.
- ...and maybe set up camp over there.

Yeah, it looks like we got puff
adders, black rhinos, snakes, lions and...

- Those are the dangers.
- [laughs]

- Are you ready for this?

[Michael] What do you think your
confidence level is on completing this?

[Jaclin] My confidence
and my clothes are gone.

The cold is awful.

to believe myself

these are rhino tracks.

It's like two of my feet.

[narrator] The desert black rhinos
range can span over 80 square miles.

Twice the distance
of other rhinos.

Their dung is as
unique as a fingerprint.

how fast you start to feel dehydrated.

We need to start boiling water, and
we need to start building our boma.

tree we can use for our boma.

I don't set it up too

This is where everything's
going to come to drink.

We have some entryways here.

[Jaclin] Looks like it's going
to give us a bit of space.

We could even have our fire
kind of right here at the entryway.

We could also put an
exterior wall out here, maybe.

I want to get a lot of
thorn trees and bushes,

so that we can use it for
protection on our boma.

- Then I'mma start to stack it around the perimeter.

use it to start my fire.

be able to do this and contribute.

Man, I can see my partner right now,
and I see that smoke flowing from the fire.

She's got it. She's got skills.

It's not the prettiest, but we
have fire, and that's important.

I got us a fire. I'm
going to go get water.

- Yes. We'll get it boiling right away.

We're definitely nowhere
near close to being done.

- So we'll suck it up tonight with what we got.

We've gone through so much firewood
because we gotta keep our fire big.

It's the only thing that helps.

- It's freezing.

Again, we went through
all of our firewood last night.

We've cannibalized our boma
on the inside as much as we could.

laying here shaking.

The ground is cold.

I wanna make a wall to
keep the warmth inside.

Um, the side of the shelter that's over
there is where the wind comes through.

So we need to figure a way out to
conquer this so that we don't go home.

Because this will send us home.

[Michael shivers]

Collecting some tall grass

so I can create like a
wind block on the inside.

Wind has not
stopped at all today.

Probably means tonight
is going to be just as bad.

So my lovely partner went and chopped
all of this grass to dig into the ground

and embed into the ground so that we
can have a barrier from the cold tonight.

[Michael] The cold
nights absolutely stuck.

You're shivering
the whole night.

Shivering makes you lose your body
temperature faster and also, you know,

uses up your energy.

Get the sand in there for a base and it
can kind of start just shaping together.

Kinda get that wall there going
and just kind of keep kicking up sand

and it kind of holds it in
place at the base and, uh,

helps keep that heat inside
and also it keeps the wind out.

It acts as a barrier.

A lotta work but
it'll be worth it.

[Jaclin] Oh, the
wind is picking up.

- [Michael] Yeah.
- Holy [bleep].

Um, it's day two, I'm still
feeling pretty optimistic.

the tasks that we need to do

So we're going to look
for places to set traps.

try a deadfall trap?

and she's been doing so well.

to worsen, the medic is called in.

but she doesn't have
anything in her stomach.

But she's hyperventilating
and she's not stopping.

- She's dry heaving like crazy.

bad with the things out here.

I felt awful.

I burned all my calories
throwing up because I'm panicking.

My morale is definitely down but

I think that's because we
haven't really had a solid win.

I think my partner's optimism
is kind of going down a little bit.

She struggled a lot yesterday.
Kind of concerned me.

Schedule today is food.

[Jaclin] Hopefully
we can secure some.

of good wins to really bring it back up.

It's been cold a
majority of the time here,

so we haven't really been
able to explore the area.

pissed off, but I like to solve problems.

So we're going to go work on a
trap so maybe we can get a bird.

for the birds for when we go to trap 'em.

There's seeds inside there

and these black seeds
inside are what the birds like.

I don't know what we're gonna do

if a lion tries to visit us.

Been stepping it up a lot,

I've been getting the wood
especially at night, running for the water

but I can't do everything,
I'm not Superman.

Here I'm just kind of disguising the
color of the paracord I'm gonna use,

it was black before.

Just trying to get it to blend
in so it doesn't look so obvious.

Just built the spring
trap for the first time, um,

You know, you have
your spring right here.

You have your trigger down here that's
connected to the other part of the trigger,

when something lands
on this, it's gonna pop it,

make it shoot up, it's
gonna tighten up the loop

and whatever's in there is
gonna get caught up on it

when it's trying to
eat this food here.

This could get something
medium-sized or small.

So, whatever lands in there will be
dinner, but let's hope that it works.

Stay positive. That's
what I'm trying to do.

[Michael] Gonna be
something in those traps today.

At some point, Africa's gonna provide
something other than extreme weather.

I think there's a bird
on our spring trap.

A lion's roar is
deep and grumbling.

and makes all the hairs

and really brings you back into the reality
of what these animals can do to you.

We're starving to death,

and without food, mornings
are really, really hard.

I'm gonna attempt to make a deadfall
trap while my partner is sleeping.

Michael's been
doing a lot of work

and it makes me feel good
to contribute to our situation.

Maybe I'll catch something
to wake him up to.

So he doesn't feel like I have
to depend on him for everything.

And it acts like a heating pad in the
sand to keep our body warm tonight.

is the bone marrow in the legs
that are hanging outside of the boma.

hide off so I can move.

fighting for my 21 days.

These are something that
Michael found and left behind.

He put 'em in a tree so that
the predators didn't mess with us.

I need the marrow out of these.

is encased inside bones

it retains low bacteria counts
compared to fresh meat.

When boiled, it can
remain edible for weeks.

positive about this marrow.

Hopefully, with just a
little bit of bone marrow

and some water it will help

And I'm gonna try
to wrap it to my foot

so it'll hold it tightly
when I'm walking.

And then the other two paws,

I'm gonna cut and
make a top out of.

Surely did not get any
more pricks or pokes.

I know that I can do this.

I'm fighting. I'm fighting for my
21 days harder than anything.

It's day 21. It's
time for extraction.

And then, I need to finish

Then, I'm gonna use the
string to tie it in the back.

I'm very excited that I've
made it to where I've made it.

Throughout this journey
I've suffered a panic attack,

cramping muscles, headache,

too many cold nights,
black rhinos and lions.

I had to fight
through all of that.

And I still can't believe
that I'm here today,

and I'm super proud of myself.

All my hard work paid
off. I'm almost there.

I'm gonna take my hide with me.

It's kept me warm all 21 days.

I think leaving the
boma is bitter sweet.

Lots of memories
have been made here.

I think I'm ready to go.

I even got my nice
handy-dandy walking stick.

It's day 21 and I'm
ready for extraction.

So the water
source is right here,

I need to go all
the way over here.

So, extraction,

looks like it's gonna be that
way over to that big, big mountain,

which is quite far.

Little dehydrated
today. I'm very tired.

But must make it to extraction.

[narrator] In her weakened
state, Jaclin will walk six miles

across lion and rhino territory,

staying on the lookout
for deadly puff adders

that are responsible for the
most snake bite deaths in Africa.

She'll then have to ascend
300 feet up and over a rocky hill

and continue across
the scorching savannah,

until she reaches a dirt road.

[Jaclin panting]

Think it's the hottest
day since I've been here.

Rough time for this hike.

Wow, yeah, that's
definitely a zebra.

This is a kill zone.

I'm thinking this was
attacked by a lion, probably.

It's a vicious world out here.

I need to keep moving,

before these lions get me.

[panting]

Definitely need some
water. [breathing heavily]

Dehydration set in really fast.

This hike is taking
everything out of me right now.

And there's the mountain
I'm looking for. It's so far away.

So tired.

[lion growls]

[Jaclin] Dizzy.

It's like I've been
hiking forever.

My legs feel like Jell-O.

I'm [bleep] dying.

[breathes uneasily]

Scorpion.

Gotta be careful.

Definitely don't wanna
step on a scorpion.

I'm getting closer
to the mountain.

Which means
closer to extraction.

These rocks are so hard.

I can't wait to hold
my babies again.

I would say to all
the girls in the world,

that are similar to me,

you feel weak or minimize you,

But you can demand
the respect you deserve.

You just gotta go out
there and put your mind to it.

21 days in the Kalahari,

seven of them by herself,
Jaclin lost 17 pounds.

Her PSR rises from 6.3 to 7.4.

No one can ever say
that I'm not a badass.

I hope my daughter never forgets

just because her dad is a male
doesn't mean that females are any less.

And that I'm just
as strong as him.

Just as brave as him.

And I can prove that
I could do anything.
