WILLIAM SHATNER:
An area in the North Atlantic

where ships vanish
into thin air.

A mountain range
in the Nevada desert

in which planes enter
but never return.

And a notorious region
of the Alaskan wilderness

that may contain a portal
to another world.

We've all heard of
the infamous Bermuda Triangle.

But the truth is that
there are numerous places

all over the world
where ships, planes,

and people enter,
and then...

...just disappear.

But why?

Do these locations
defy the laws of physics?

Do they possess evil energy?

Or is it possible that
there are some places on Earth

that we are simply
not meant to go?

Well, that is what
we'll try and find out.

♪ ♪

SHATNER: In the western part
of the North Atlantic Ocean

lies a region where numerous
ships and airplanes

have inexplicably disappeared.

Although this notorious area
cannot be found

on any official map,

it has come to be known
all over the world

as the Bermuda Triangle.

The Bermuda Triangle's
approximately

500,000 square miles of water

between Bermuda, Miami,
and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In the area,
planes will crash,

ships will go missing.

It's just absolute bedlam.

The Bermuda Triangle is seen
as a mysterious place

just because it's so big
and vast,

and lots of interesting things
happen there.

It is very strange that you
have many ships lost there,

and airplanes just went missing
with no explanation for it.

Is that a coincidence,
or is there something

nefarious at work?

SHATNER: One of the noteworthy
incidents that took place

in the Bermuda Triangle
is the disappearance

of the USS Cyclops.

In March of 1917,
the massive cargo vessel,

which had a crew
of 306 seamen,

was navigating
through the Triangle

when it mysteriously
went missing.

No wreckage or bodies
were ever found,

and over the years,
there have been hundreds

of other seemingly
bizarre vanishings

in this area
that have baffled experts.

The Bermuda Triangle is one
of the great mysteries

in modern history.

Now, of course,
hundreds of theories

have been proposed.

The first logical theory
is the weather.

Maybe there was
a sudden hurricane

that came out of nowhere.

Perhaps these jets
and these ships

lost their way,
and perhaps that's the reason

why all hands were lost.

That's a possibility.

-(thunder crashing)
-But when there are things

that are difficult to solve,

at that point people say, "Aha!

"There must be something there
beyond science

that's making this happen."

SHATNER:
Is it possible that science

cannot explain
some of the disappearances

that haven taken place
within the Bermuda Triangle?

There are those who believe
that the answer is yes.

And as evidence,
they point to perhaps

the most infamous
mass disappearance

that has taken place there
to date.

Five Navy torpedo bombers,

collectively known
as Flight 19,

take off for what is supposed
to be a routine training mission

over the Atlantic Ocean.

RICKSECKER: They took off
due east from Fort Lauderdale

into the Bermuda Triangle.

After they reached
their first stop on the run,

they turned north.

And that's when things
started to get crazy.

Their compasses
started acting strange,

and the crew started getting
really confused

about what was going on.

One of the pilots
actually thought

that they may have been over
the Florida Keys,

which was nowhere near
where they were supposed to be.

SHATNER: For over four hours,
ground control

stayed in close radio contact
with the pilots

as they tried
to find their bearings.

BENJAMIN RADFORD: Flight 19 was
led by Commander Charles Taylor,

and the problem was that Taylor
didn't know where he was.

And not only was his compass
malfunctioning,

it was getting dark.

And so you can sort of look
at Flight 19

as sort of the perfect storm
of bad things happening.

SHATNER:
At about 6:30 p.m., the planes

ominously dropped off radar.

The Navy immediately launched
a search and rescue operation,

but curiously,
no wreckage was ever found.

All five planes vanished
without a trace.

RICKSECKER: The pilots
were never heard from again.

Nothing has ever been found
that'd been lost.

Almost equally bizarre

was that one
of the search and rescue planes

went missing as well.

About two hours after takeoff,
a Mariner floating plane

lost contact with the base.

Another one of
the search and rescue planes

came to take a look
at the area

and found nothing.

This search and rescue plane
was completely missing.

SHATNER: All told,
27 airmen disappeared

in the Flight 19 incident.

But how is it possible
that so many Navy pilots

experienced malfunctions
with their compasses

that caused them
to become lost

and ultimately crash?

Perhaps the answer can be found
by examining reports

of not only bizarre vanishings

but also other kinds
of strange occurrences

that have taken place
in the Bermuda Triangle

for centuries.

Our first reports
of strange phenomena

in the Bermuda Triangle
actually came

from Christopher Columbus
in 1492.

One night when they were
journeying through the area,

he noticed these unusual
dancing lights across the water

that he described
as small wax candles

that would rise and lower
across the night sky.

Columbus kept copious
diary notes,

and these state
that he couldn't understand

the strange lights
going up and down.

But beyond that,
he reported that his compass

started spinning wildly.

This was something
extremely unusual.

SHATNER:
Curiously, Christopher Columbus

is not the only famous navigator

to witness inexplicable activity
in the Bermuda Triangle.

In 1928, pioneering aviator
Charles Lindbergh

had a similarly
baffling experience.

Charles Lindbergh
was on a nonstop flight

between Havana in Cuba

and St. Louis in Missouri.

And over the Florida Straits,

he suddenly encountered
this very strange haze

that surrounded the aircraft.

And he thought, "Well, okay,
if I climb higher,

I should be able to lose it."

But it seemed to follow him.

He couldn't see anything
around him at all.

At the same time, his compass
started spinning wildly.

And this continued for hours

until finally the haze
started to disappear

and he could see beneath him
the Bahamas.

And he knew at this point

that he was now around 300 miles
off course.

So, obviously,
he recorrected himself

and finished his journey.

But it would definitely seem
as if Charles Lindbergh

did experience
the same type of phenomena

which could well have been
behind the disappearance

of a number of planes
in the Bermuda Triangle.

SHATNER:
Do the anomalies witnessed

by both Christopher Columbus
and Charles Lindbergh

suggest that unusual phenomena
may be responsible

for causing airplanes
and ships to disappear

in the Bermuda Triangle?

And is it possible that science
does not have all the answers

when it comes to what happens
in this area, as some believe?

The fact that there
have been scores

of rather mysterious
disappearances...

...with all hands on board
just disappearing

off the face of the Earth,

it means that it's possible

that perhaps
none of these disappearances

will ever be adequately
explained.

And so there is a chance
that 100 years from now,

we'll still be debating
what happens

in the Bermuda Triangle.

Are the strange incidents
that happen

in the Bermuda Triangle
just freak accidents?

Or could there be
stranger forces at play,

as many people believe?

Perhaps the answer can be found

by examining several
mysterious disappearances

that have occurred in the heart
of the United States.

SHATNER:
On a bright, clear morning
in this small desert town,

billionaire adventurer
and pilot Steve Fossett

takes off for a scenic flight...

...and is never
heard from again.

PAULIDES:
Fossett should have been back

within about two hours.

He didn't come back.

The airport called
search and rescue,

and what encompassed
was the biggest search

for an aircraft in Nevada
of all time.

It went on for days.

MAN:
We've got 200 people looking.

We haven't just hit
these areas once,

we have flown over 'em
two, three, four times

with different type of aircraft
at different altitudes.

And then, on top of that,

it wasn't just the people
in the air,

it wasn't just
the ground-pounders,

but there was also people
at home that were looking.

There were thousands
of people online

that were looking
at Google Earth,

trying to see if they could find
some remnants or a crash site.

In essence, they threw
every imaginable resource

into finding Steve Fossett.

SHATNER: Federal investigators
leading the search

for Steve Fossett were baffled
by his disappearance

because he was
a highly experienced pilot.

Steve Fossett had set
some 91 aviation records,

including being the first person
to circumnavigate the globe

in an airplane solo
without refueling.

So that's why
when he went off on that day

in an airplane and disappeared,
people were shocked,

because this is
not something you expect

from somebody
like Steve Fossett.

PAULIDES: During the search
for Mr. Fossett,

the searchers
came across a multitude

of other planes
that had crashed.

Some they knew about,
a few they didn't.

But what it tells you is
the quality of the search

they made for him.

It was intensive,
and they weren't finding him.

SHATNER: After a month
of investigation,

authorities stopped
the search for Steve Fossett.

And then, in February of 2008,

Fossett was declared
legally dead,

even though
both he and his plane

were still missing.

But what could have caused
such a highly skilled pilot

to seemingly disappear
off the face of the Earth?

There are those who believe
the answer is tied to the fact

that Fossett was flying
in what is known

as the Nevada Triangle.

MORENO: The Nevada Triangle,
it goes from Reno

down to Las Vegas,

and then over to Fresno,
and it's on the edge

of the Sierra Nevada
mountain range.

And the reason that it's known
as the Nevada Triangle

is that some 2,000
mostly small aircraft

have crashed within that zone
in the last 60 years.

It's seen as this kind
of Bermuda Triangle

of the Sierra Nevada.

SHATNER:
While the Bermuda Triangle

may be better known,
the Nevada Triangle

is actually far more deadly.

On average,
nearly three planes go missing

in this mysterious area
every month.

MORENO: One of the earliest
planes that disappeared

in the Nevada Triangle
was from a flight

taken by a man
named by Charles Ogle.

And Ogle, like Fossett,
was a successful businessman

and a veteran pilot.

And so, for him to disappear
on a routine flight

was out of the ordinary.

But he did, and his plane
is still out there somewhere.

So, that's still a mystery
of the Nevada Triangle

that hasn't been resolved.

Another famous story
of an airplane

that crashed in the triangle
was a B-24 Liberator.

It was 1943,
and this B-24

took off from Fresno,
reported in a few times,

and then just kind of
suddenly disappeared.

And so the U.S. military

immediately sent out
nine more B-24s

to do searches.

And then another one
disappeared.

And so it became part
of the legend

of the Nevada Triangle,
is you have two B-24s,

these big lumbering planes
that are, you know,

supposed to drop bombs
on places, et cetera,

and they both go down
in the mountains

somewhere between
the Nevada-California border.

SHATNER: What is going on
in the Nevada Triangle

that is causing
so many planes to disappear?

Perhaps the answer can be found
by taking a closer look

at the Steve Fossett case,

because two years
after Fossett's plane vanished,

it then seemed
to inexplicably reappear.

In October of 2008,
there's a hiker

out in
the Mammoth Mountains area

walking with his dog,
and he finds

$1,000 in $100 bills

and thinks that's kind of
interesting and unusual.

But also he found
the pilot's license.

He started to look
at the license,

and he realized,
"Wait, this is that guy

that was missing."

So he took it
to the local authorities,

and then they mount
a new search of that area

and they start finding
other things.

They find the engine
of the plane,

and they find a tail section
with the number on it

which clearly identifies it
as the airplane.

Also, they find
a pair of sneakers

and a couple of bones.

So, they take the bones,
they do DNA on 'em,

and it turns out that it is
the remains of Steve Fossett.

PAULIDES:
The intriguing part about this

is that several articles
at the time

stated that aircraft
had flown over the location

where he was found 19 times.

And somehow
the wreckage was missed.

Also, people on the ground,
when they recovered his remains

and the aircraft, stated that
there was even a small fire

on the ground in close proximity
to where all of this happened.

Discoloration
of the associated foliage

would have been unusual
and something to look at

by the people in the air.

And so I don't have
a rational explanation

how Steve Fossett's plane

was missed 19 times
from the air.

COLLINS: How is it possible
that all of these searches

missed this wreckage?

I mean, there is
no obvious answer.

But we have to raise
the question

of whether the wreckage
was not there

during the intervening period,

and that Steve Fossett

encountered one of these
mysterious anomalies

that we know to be associated

with the Bermuda
and Nevada Triangle regions.

Steve Fossett's plane
could have actually gone

into another dimension
for a year

and then be ejected out of it
back into our own reality.

PAULIDES: When you look
at the Steve Fossett case

and you understand that normal
search and rescue

is gonna find this pilot
and the plane,

and somehow or another,

it didn't happen
for over a year,

you have to ask yourself,

was it there or was it not?

SHATNER: Do mysterious anomalies
within the Nevada Triangle

cause planes to disappear?

Perhaps.
But many researchers believe

there is a much more
powerful triangle

located in the American Midwest.

It's an area of Lake Michigan
where thousands of ships

have gone missing
and have never been found.

Steven Kubacki,
a 23-year-old student

at nearby Hope College,

sets out for a day
of cross-country skiing

along the shore
of Lake Michigan.

But by nightfall
it becomes clear

that Steven isn't going
to return.

Steven Kubacki told his friends
where he was going

and that he'd be back
later that night.

When he didn't return,
his friends called for help.

Search and rescue responded,
and Michigan State Police

found his skis and a backpack
on the beach of Lake Michigan.

And what happened is,
is that the search and rescue

individuals found tracks going
from the beach and the backpack

out onto the ice and ending.

It was a one-way track.

They searched
for over a week.

They found no other evidence.

Everybody thinks
Kubacki's dead.

Essentially, the case is closed.

SHATNER: The authorities
concluded that Steven Kubacki

had fallen in the lake
and drowned.

That is, until he mysteriously
reappeared over a year later,

more than 600 miles away
from where he was last seen.

PAULIDES: 14 months later,
Steven wakes up

in Massachusetts approximately
20 miles from his dad's house.

He makes his way there,

and his parents
are just floored.

They thought Steven was dead.

He has no idea how he got there,

and the last memory
he said he had

was being on a very cold
Lake Michigan.

So the million-dollar question
is: what happened

from the time he was on
Lake Michigan on a frozen lake

to the time he arrives
in Massachusetts?

It's a scenario
that's played out

hundreds and hundreds of times

on Lake Michigan
on the shores.

People disappear.

They lose their memory,

and suddenly they appear
someplace else.

They don't have
any idea where they're at.

SHATNER: Steven Kubacki
is just one of many people,

planes, and ships
to have gone missing

in what is known
as the Michigan Triangle.

TUTTLE: The Michigan Triangle
is bordered

by Manitowoc, Wisconsin
and Ludington, Michigan,

on the north side,
and the southeast point

is the bottom
of the state of Michigan.

In the Bermuda Triangle,
things just go missing.

In the Michigan Triangle,
strange things happen.

One ship went down
in the Michigan Triangle

and it turned turtle,
flipped upside down.

It was found upside down
with none of the 11 crew on it.

PAULIDES:
One of the most famous stories

from the Michigan Triangle
is Flight 2501,

a Northwest Orient flight
from New York to Seattle

back in 1950.

It flew over the lake,
vanished,

and as advanced as technology
is today with side-scan sonar,

they've gone up and down
that lake

as recently as a year ago,

and they still
cannot find that flight.

SHATNER: What could be causing
the strange occurrences

within the Michigan Triangle?

Well, some researchers claim
they are the result

of a geological phenomenon known
as magnetotelluric current.

TRAVIS TAYLOR:
The idea of telluric current

is the concept that planets
will generate

certain locations that have

more electromagnetic anomalies
than others.

And in these places,
just below the surface

is actually a mixture
of minerals and salts

and things in the ground
that are conductive.

So there's an energy field

that travels certain paths
around the Earth.

HUGH NEWMAN: Some people
have suggested that inside

the Lake Michigan Triangle,

where people have had
very strange disappearances,

strange anomalies,
and many other things,

it could be some kind of geology
mixed with Earth energies

and telluric currents
that cause this.

And so we have to consider
there could be something

much more profound
going on there

than we currently realize.

SHATNER:
Is the Michigan Triangle

affected by the energy
of the Earth itself?

There are those who believe
the answer is yes,

and as evidence they point
to a curious discovery

that was made
at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

COLLINS: In 2007,
underwater archaeologist

Mark Holley
of the Northwestern University

was diving in Lake Michigan.

He was looking for shipwrecks,

but he actually came across
something quite different.

In 12 feet of water,
he found a series

of standing stones

that seemed to form
a circular pattern.

What was interesting
is that amongst the stones

was what appeared to be
this carving of an animal

known as a mastodon
that actually disappeared

towards the end
of the last ice age.

And so this stone structure
must have been down there

for at least 10,000 years

before the lake
took its final form

at the end of the last ice age.

SHATNER: The formation was
dubbed the Michigan Stonehenge

due to its similarity

to the world-famous
ancient monument

located in Wiltshire, England.

While we don't know specifically

what the Michigan Stonehenge
was used for,

there are a lot of ideas
about how other stone circles

around the globe,
like Stonehenge,

the Rollright Stones,
and Drombeg Circle,

were tapping
into the telluric current

in the ground and harnessing
that Earth energy

and these nodes of power.

COLLINS: Stone circles
are found all over the world.

Often, the stone circles
are placed very close

to where this strange phenomena
can be seen.

And this is very likely the case

with what we have
at Lake Michigan.

So we have to ask ourselves,
what was this stone circle,

and how did it relate
to the fact

that in the area around
Lake Michigan, to this day,

there are a large number
of disappearances

of planes and humans,

and is it possible
that the two are linked?

The idea that electrical
currents in the Earth

cause strange disappearances
inside the Michigan Triangle

is certainly
a provocative theory.

But something even more bizarre
may be happening

in a region of
the Alaskan wilderness,

where it is believed that people

cross over
into another dimension.

SHATNER: Alaska--
here among the rugged mountains,

dense forests,
and towering glaciers

lies a mysterious stretch
of wilderness

where more than 16,000 people

have gone missing
since 1988.

Locals refer to this area
as the Alaska Triangle.

RICKSECKER: The Alaska Triangle
stretches from Juneau

in the south
to Anchorage in the middle,

all the way up to Utqiagvik

at the most northern point
in Alaska.

Like other triangle areas
of the world,

planes will crash,
people will go missing.

But the Alaska Triangle
seems to be more volatile

than other areas of the world.

PAULIDES: You have to remember
that Alaska

has some of the most
notoriously difficult terrain,

weather...

...and it has the highest number
of private planes

anywhere in the United States.

So, in one sense
it's not surprising

they have a number of people
that go missing there.

In another sense
it's quite fantastic

when you look at the stories
behind the missing.

In January 1950,
a Douglas C-54D Skymaster

taking off from
Elmendorf Air Force Base

was headed toward Montana.

It was a beautiful day,
only a few clouds in the sky,

yet just as it passed
over into Yukon Territory,

the Air Force lost complete
radio contact with it.

Both United States and Canadian
military forces teamed up,

about 7,000 personnel
scanning 350,000 square miles

of territory for this
missing airplane,

and couldn't find a thing.

But what's even stranger
is, just two weeks later,

a smaller plane went down
in the same area.

They were able
to find that immediately.

Yet the larger airplane,
the Skymaster,

they've never been able
to find a thing.

It completely disappeared.

PAULIDES: When you look
at the Alaska Triangle,

one of the few times
a search and rescue person

has ever disappeared
was an individual

named Gerald DeBerry.

And he was on a search
outside of Fairbanks,

and he was on an ATV,

and he never showed back up
after the search.

The Alaska State Troopers
bring K-9s in,

the K-9s can't find a scent.

They bring
professional trackers in,

they can't find tracks.

And strangely,
they couldn't find the ATV.

It was a year later,
a hiker finds the ATV,

engine's turned off,

and the Alaska State Troopers
went in

and did another massive search.

He's never been found.

SHATNER: The number of people
that are reported missing

in Alaska every year
is twice as high

as the national average.

But can all
of these disappearances

be explained by Alaska's
unforgiving wilderness?

It's possible, but there are
those who believe

that something
more extraordinary

may be taking place.

And as evidence,
they point to stories

in local folklore
that describe strange creatures

suddenly appearing
out of thin air.

Alaska's an area where
there are many unknowns,

many mysteries.

And there are very
common stories

of what you might call
monsters in the lake.

One of the very
compelling examples

actually comes from
the Kenia Peninsula,

on the southern part of it.

There's an abandoned town
called Portlock.

It was a cannery town,
a very successful one early on.

But it started
getting terrorized

by a monster.

So, this monster
would attack people,

kill people, to the point
where, by 1950,

the entire town was abandoned.

This creature was identified
as the Nantinaq.

Nantinaq can be thought of
very much

in the sort of wider tradition
of bigfoot or Sasquatch,

somewhere on the slippery slope
between man and creature.

NEWMAN:
Some people have suggested

that these are entities
that live between worlds,

that they come through portals,

and they return back
through portals.

What this world is that
they come from, we don't know,

but they're rarely seen.

They often disappear
into thin air.

So there is a good chance
that it's not just that people

get lost in the wilderness.

But actually
they're being transported

with these beings
to other realms.

SHATNER: Could strange creatures
really be traveling

to the Alaska Triangle
from other realms?

While such an idea may sound
like a far-fetched fantasy,

many researchers claim
that it's entirely possible.

Because scientists
have discovered

that there are numerous
geological anomalies

found throughout
this mysterious area.

The land in Alaska
is extremely volatile.

The U.S. Department
of the Interior

did a geological survey
in the area

and discovered
negative magnetic anomalies

that are prevalent in the area.

They can wreak havoc
with guidance systems,

compasses, all kinds
of electronic equipment

that can cause planes
and other vessels

to go missing or crash.

And there are theories
that these anomalies

can spawn portals,

these doorways
into other dimensions.

SHATNER: While geological
activity in Alaska

is known to cause
magnetic anomalies,

could it also be creating
portals in this area,

as some believe?

At the moment,
we can't say for sure.

But one thing is certain--

hundreds, if not thousands,
of people

continue to mysteriously
disappear in the Alaska Triangle

every year.

As strange as it seems,
there are those

who are convinced
that energy portals

are actually responsible
for many disappearances

in the Alaska Triangle,
and some researchers claim

that there could be
an entire network

of these interdimensional
hotspots all over the world.

SHATNER:
A Japanese research vessel
named Kaiyo Maru No. 5

leaves harbor to conduct
scientific tests

of the ocean floor.

But shortly into the voyage,

the Japanese Navy
orders the ship to help

investigate reports
of numerous fishing boats

going missing in the ocean
just south of mainland Japan.

The Japanese government
sent out nine scientists

and 22 other crew members
on Kaiyo Maru No. 5

to discover what was happening
to these missing vessels.

But within a couple hours,

all contact with the ship
was lost,

and all they ever found
of their investigative vessel

were some remnants of the ship
floating in the water.

No bodies were ever found.

COLLINS:
When the Kaiyo Maru No. 5

went missing without a trace
in the very same area,

this convinced
the Japanese government

that this region
was so dangerous to ship in

that it should be avoided
at all costs.

SHATNER: Technically,
the area of the Pacific Ocean

located directly south of Japan

is referred to
as the Philippine Sea.

But for centuries
it has been known

by another,
more infamous nickname--

the Dragon's Triangle.

The Dragon's Triangle,
also known as the Devil's Sea,

is an area between
Japan in the north,

the Philippines in the south,

and the island of Guam
in the east,

and it's somewhere
that for many hundreds of years

has been considered one
of the most dangerous places

on Earth.

KAKU: There's mythology
about the Dragon's Triangle

going back to the year 1275,

when the Mongol hordes
invaded Japan.

At that point,
it looks as if Japan

was gonna be overwhelmed
by the Mongols.

But then a tremendous wind
destroyed the fleet

of the Mongols,
and the Japanese

called it God's Wind...

...because it destroyed
the Mongol fleet

about to invade Japan.

Perhaps it was nothing more
than typhoons

that suddenly erupted,
drowning ships.

But some people
think that perhaps

all the disappearing
of the ships

is due to some mysterious
spirit of some sort.

And so this is
a matter of legend

that goes back
thousands of years.

SHATNER:
Is the Dragon's Triangle

merely the site
of powerful typhoons

that cause ships to sink?

Or could there be something
far more incredible going on?

Perhaps the answer can be found
by examining a theory

which suggests
that the Dragon's Triangle

is directly connected

to other mysterious
triangular regions

around the globe.

NEWMAN:
In 1972, Ivan T. Sanderson,

who was a biologist and author,
produced a paper called

"The 12 Devil's Graveyards
Around the World."

And this caused a sensation
because he noted

that places
like the Bermuda Triangle

and the Dragon's Triangle,
or the Devil's Sea,

were part of this global system
marking ten points

on the surface of the Earth

where strange occurrences
kept happening.

COLLINS: Sanderson predicted
that the Earth

was covered by a series
of what he referred to

as "vile vortices."

Five of these were located
in a latitude

known as the Tropic of Cancer
on the north of the Equator,

and five of them were to
the south of the Equator

on the Tropic of Capricorn.

And the remaining two

were at the North Pole
and the South Pole.

And these were locations
around the world

where there were
disappearances of vessels

and other strange occurrences
on a regular basis.

SHATNER: Many researchers
find Ivan T. Sanderson's theory

to be compelling,

even if not every
mysterious triangular area

reported to exist
on the planet

is located in a vile vortice.

And they claim that
the pattern he discovered

suggests that the disappearances
within these areas

may be due to vast
global forces.

When we're looking
at these locations

of these triangles
that are placed

at specific points
around the planet,

we are looking at things
like gravitational anomalies,

instrument malfunctions,

magnetic anomalies,

and many other
strange occurrences,

all within these
specific triangles.

So we have to question,
is there a deeper mystery here

that we don't yet
fully understand?

If pockets of unstable energy

are causing bizarre vanishings
around the globe,

then it naturally
begs the question,

what could be powering them?

Well, according to one
extraordinary theory,

the source may be
an enormous crystal

embedded within the Earth.

SHATNER:
Bermuda, Michigan,

Nevada, Alaska, Japan--

countless ships,
planes, and lives

have been lost in these areas.

So many, in fact,
that some people

refer to them collectively
as the Devil's Triangles.

Is it possible
that all of these areas

are somehow connected,
as many researchers believe?

Perhaps a clue can be found
with a theory

which proposes that the nature
of the Earth itself

may be far different
from what we commonly think.

DAVID STEVENSON:
There is a theory that the Earth

early in its history had a core

that was completely liquid
but was cooling.

And as it cools,
there would come a point

where the center of the Earth
would crystallize.

And if you keep
growing that crystal,

it's very likely to become
polycrystalline,

meaning that
there's lots of crystals.

And so, over a period
of billions of years,

you end up with something
that is a solid

in a region of the Earth
consisting of many crystals.

looking at the center

of the Earth being a crystal,

crystals have facets
on their surface.

And, really,
crystals are also known

for storing energy,

and their different
facets and points

will have different
levels of energy.

This is certainly part
of why we have anomalies

on the Earth's surface,
and why they vary

around the surface of the Earth.

Is the center of the Earth

really a giant crystal
filled with energy?

According to some scientists,
it's a distinct possibility.

And there are those who believe
that if the Earth

really has a crystal core,

it might explain why
some areas of the planet

are home to mysterious
disappearances

and strange phenomena.

NEWMAN: In the early 1970s,
three Russian scientists

produced a paper called
"Is the Earth a Large Crystal?"

They believed that
this angular crystal

could have actually been
at the center of the Earth,

and they believed that
the energetic signatures

of the points of this crystal
could be witnessed energetically

and noted
on the Earth's surface.

SHATNER:
Incredibly, the study revealed

that the points
of the hypothetical crystal

aligned with many of
the so-called Devil's Triangles

around the globe.

It would seem that
electromagnetic phenomena

is present that seems
to mark out this grid,

and that it is
at such locations

where these disappearances
and vanishes occur,

and therefore they are seen
as dangerous locations,

places where human beings,
where human life can be lost.

We need to get to grips
with these ideas

if ever we want
to start understanding

the disappearances and crashes
and similar incidents

taking place in such places.

So, what do you think?

Are there strange forces
on our planet

that cause people to simply

It's a hard concept to prove,

can provide us

with more answers,
