This live class, as stated in the announcement, is covering the reading section question type of true

false that given.

Also, yes.

No, not given.

And that is what will be specifically covered today.

As you know, we have one live group class per month.

And in that in that live class, I normally cover a specific topic or subject that students might be

struggling with.

And I can say with certainty that the true false not given question is one of those question types that

students really have a problem with.

So my hope today is to go through this in a way that makes it very plain for you in terms of how to

manage this question in a very easy way so that your your answer accuracy rate goes up tremendously.

So let's go ahead and get into the true false negative and question.

So first question I have, why do students have difficulty with the yes, no, not given question?

You can put a response in the chat box to this, if you're if you're a student that's having trouble

with the yes, no, not giving question.

Or if you just have some idea of why students in general have difficulty with a yes, no, not given

In the chat box with whatever your difficulty is, whatever your challenge is, because today is the

Let's have a look at what some people are saying.

Because of the ambiguity and the questions.

There's no real ambiguity in the question.

I'll have to try and think about that in terms of what you mean by it traps in the passage.

There's trap language or wrong language in the question.

But there's no trap in the passage.

Vincent says overthinking or confusing the answer choices overthinking is a big problem.

I agree, Vincent, over thinking is a big problem.

A lot of students tried to be too smart and they think that they have to come up with an answer.

Some statements can be implicitly inferred, making it ambiguous.

That's a problem when you all start inferring or thinking that you need to make an inference, you know,

to try to fill in missing blanks.

That's why you're messing up, right?

That's the problem.

The passage contradicts everything in the question.

All right, so a lot of you were able to identify some of the difficulty in terms of the yes or no giving

question.

So these are some of the reasons why students have difficulty.

And some of you were able to identify this searching for missing information not given a lot of students

struggle with the option of not given because for most of you and your educational life, you've come

across true and false or yes and no.

You all know that, but very few have come across having to deal with not given.

You're not familiar with what not given me.

And sometimes you are confused.

You know, is something not given in the past or something, not given the question and that you simply

have to understand that is a one way situation you're looking for.

It was not given in the question, not was not given in the, you know, was not given in the past.

It just is not, you know, you're not looking at it both ways.

Another big mistake or making assumptions, making an inference.

Connections that don't exist, trying to apply common sense.

Believe it or not, that's a big problem.

Trying to apply common sense, people thinking that, oh, and this is what we deal with overthinking

sometimes.

Sometimes students try to look at the whole passage sentence and the whole question language, all the

language, and they completely that that's that's there has that is not the strategy, the strategy

that is taught in this course.

And that's where it gets into overthinking.

And that really is because you lack strategy or lack the ability to apply strategy properly.

Thinking that you need to come up with an answer is not about you.

It's about comparing the language right is not about what you think a big problem also deals with.

If you have a lack of English skill and when you have a lack of English skill, a lot of times that

that's what ends up happening with.

That's what ends up causing overeating or overthinking is a lack of English steel because you can't

understand the context.

Now, in terms of dealing with false and not given, you can look at this question and passage here,

and this is a good example of how students will confuse false and gibbon.

So right here, says the question right is break up with the arrow here.

The question is says South America is the only country where the red much variety is located.

Then the passage says Mozza has been located in West Africa and even in more abundance in South Asia.

So is this answer false or is this answer not give it?

Right, with this ad to be false, they're not giving.

And I could tell you right now is what studios are going to give.

Not giving false.

When you look at the question, right, Red Monitor is the only country or South America is the only

When you look at the question here, when you look at this question here, what is the language?

And this is what helps.

What is the language that will determine if something is true or false or not given in the question?

I'm not talking about the key words, the key words will be South America and Red Market.

Those will be the key words to scan for the right, the right sentence.

What is the language in the question?

The language in the question that determines if something is going to be true or false or not given

is the only country, the only country.

When you look at the passage centres.

The passage doesn't contradict that.

It doesn't confirm it.

It is missing that part is missing.

So, right, a lot of students mess up, and I'm not sure why somebody would choose false.

So that's that's something that you all need to be clear to stop overthinking it and just apply the

strategy has given.

So something I want to mention very quickly in terms of just not given versus true or false, not given.

These are slightly different.

In terms of meaning, there is no difference in strategy, right?

There is no difference in strategy at all.

You have if something is just not given, you're dealing with the opinion, view or belief of the writer.

You were trying to verify if the writers believe statement or opinion is something that is, is, you

know, is yes, yes, you can agree with it.

No, no, the pastor doesn't agree with it or the pastor doesn't give any information about.

So yes, no, not given dealing with opinions.

If you're dealing with true false not given here, you deal with factual information about the top and

you really are asking yourself, are is this fact true, false or not given in the passage?

Now, this might be helpful when you're thinking about it.

This might be helpful when you're thinking about it in terms of scanning.

There is something of a question is yes, no, not given your standing for the author's opinions, views

or beliefs.

If an answer is true or false or not given, then you're standing for statements that are factual in

nature and understanding that difference can, can, can help.

Maybe in that respect, but in terms of strategy, there is no difference in strategy.

There is no difference in application of the strategy.

And that's why very often you'll see me treated the same in terms of saying yes or not given.

And Nabila.

Your response wouldn't still be ambiguous as much as a superset of Rib Monster, that's what's called

overthinking the Billa.

That's that's a day you are giving a perfect example of overthinking.

I don't need you to be this smart.

Just this is the language comparison, beer is the language comparison.

So that's a difference when yes, no, not given true false, not given a slight difference and only

meaningful if we're talking about something in terms of scanning.

Some helpful points to remember for, yes, no doubt given question.

The question is go in order.

After number one, you'll find number two, after number two, you'll find number three, after number

three, you'll find number four.

So forth and so on.

Were they not given question?

Sometimes you'll have you'll find a sentence that has that has relevant information to the question.

Sometimes they'll be just a complete absence of any information on the on on the not giving question.

There's going to be one of each type in the set, there's going to be at least one true, at least one

false, at least one not given.

So if you have five questions, there's going to be at least one of each.

We talked about this already, don't overread.

And when I'm talking about overread here, I'm not really talking about overthinking.

I'm talking about students who decide, well, I'm just going to read the whole paragraph.

And I'm just going to read the whole paragraph and digest all this information, they come up with what

I think is the answer, and that is why you end up getting those answers wrong.

Most of the time is overeating, taking into information too much information instead of doing a language

comparison meaning dangerous beer.

Be aware of language that changes meaning such as, you know, every all, some most always, often

a few occasionally.

Being aware of the twist language in the question, this is probably the most important thing that I'm

going to end up discussing today or helping you to be able to identify today is the what I call the

twist language.

And what I mean by this there is there's always language in the question.

There's always language in the question that a test designer is going to use to twist it towards true

twist it towards false or twisted towards that given.

If you're able to identify what that language is, it makes the answering process to be so much easier.

And then the final thing I'll talk about in terms of a helpful point to remember is question and answer

creation.

Understand that a question can come out of two sentences.

And what I mean by that is that sometimes and this is something they're doing a lot more now than they

used to do in the past, where they may take one or two words from one sentence and then they might

take, you know, two or three words from the next sentence.

And then they use that information to combine into one question.

And so, you know, when you're trying to find an answer, you might find the question language in one

sentence and then find the answer language in the next sentence.

So you want to be aware of that as a as a possibility.
