where mom and my
sister Carol had landed.

hadn't worked out so well.

Now she was looking after mom.

The cab fare came to 95 cents.

following day

on the first paper I applied to.

I had no difficulty about it.

Not since I was
a child, a very small child,

have I had any
difficulty in getting work.

It would be strange if I did.

as immodest as it seems.

When I choose to,

I can be
exceedingly ingratiating.

And to top it off,

there was my childhood
training by earnest teachers.

when the penalty for

very good or very big.

these average people
looked like submoronic dolts.

Whenever I cared to,

and when I had
an amusing objective in mind,

I've always advanced in my work.

But I set
an all-time record on the paper.

I was assistant city editor
at the end of the first week.

Two weeks later,
I made city editor.

Carol, on the other hand,

had a different
experience of employment.

Being sorely undernourished
and frequently raped,

energy, time, or appetite
