-I've been feeling guilty
for the last 20 years.

But I had to protect my family.

This is why I never came forward.

That night it was dark,

driving up the mountain road.

But I had full beam on

and it lit up the whole lane.

And when I come 'round that corner,

he was in the middle of the road.

I slammed on the brakes.

The person I saw was by here.

He ran cross here like this

and he looked directly at me

and I had perfect view of that person.

Perfect view.

And I know for a fact it was that person.

The man in question.

I've lived with this for so many years.

I just want justice for that family.

This was and still is

the biggest murder inquiry
ever seen in South Wales.

After months often frustrating work,

police have now arrested a 38 year old man

on suspicion of murder.

-For four days and they released the bastard!

There's been no let-up

in the intense police activity at the house

in Trethwyn Road, a few miles
up the valley from Clydach.

Neighbors were awoken
just after seven o'clock

and saw David Morris
being led away by the police.

-There's a lot of police here, I know.

I woke up this morning,
just all I could see is

police everywhere and sergeants
and you know what I mean,

it was, uh...

It was loads everywhere like.

This new arrest is the latest development

in the biggest murder inquiry ever mounted

by South Wales Police.

It's nearly two years
since the battered bodies

of three generations of the same family

were found in their burned-out
home in Kelvin Road.

Teams of officers also
search land adjoining a stream

near the suspect's house

as word of the arrest reached Clydach.

-People have been coming in and

that's all they're talking about is that, er,

the new developments and the fact that

the police are looking to resolve the case.

David Morris is now being held

at an unnamed police station,

where he's being questioned
by senior detectives.

This interview is being tape recorded

and video recorded.

When the light is eliminated,

the interview is being monitored.

Okay, David, you understand that?

Yeah.

The reason for this interview is because

you've been arrested on
suspicion of being involved

in the murders of Doris
Violet Dawson, 80 years,

Amanda Jane Power, 34 years,

Katie Jane Power, 10 years,
and Emily Jane Power, 8 years.

This is my opportunity to question you

regarding this murder.

It is also your opportunity
to explain your involvement...

After an 11 week trial,

this was the moment the family of the victims

had waited for for so long.

Justice at last for their loved ones.

-It has been three long and difficult years

sinc Mum, Mandy, Katie, and Emily were

so cruelly taken from us.

And today we know that
evil person responsible for this

will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

David Morris's family, though,

are looking to lawyers to launch an appeal.

-We are devastated by the verdict.

We're all with you, darlings!

Thank you.

-But we are unable to understand the evidence

that was presented to the court.

We are told by David's lawyers

that there are good grounds
for an appeal, which will be...

commenced straight away.

We are confident that justice will prevail.

If I thought for one minute my brother was

the Clydach murderer, he would be dead to me.

How can you be so sure?

-That's a question I've been asked before and

that's the other thing that people have said,

"Are you sticking by
him through blind faith?"

and "You're ignoring things."

I'm not ignoring anything.

I know my brother.

I know my brother a hundred
percent like he knows me.

Inside out.

He had so much patience with his children.

He always did.

Yes, he used to get into trouble.

We've never tried to paint a
perfect picture of my brother.

But he's not the monster
that they made him out to be.

You went to Mandy's that night.

Something happened in that house

and you committed the murders.

-You know it wasn't me.

Are you sure?

-I'm positive.

I've got no,

I had no reason to hurt
Mandy or her children.

I got no possible reason whatsoever.

You know, why the bloody hell would I do it?

Okay.

Before we, I mean saying what you did there,

did you go there, David?

-No.
-We knew he didn't do it.

So we honestly thought, no,
he's not gonna get charged.

They're gonna question him, he'll be home.

And then I thought, well,

knowing South Wales Police
reputation, then we were scared.

Then we were really scared because we knew

pretty much what they're capable of.

-Innocent!

-Fucking innocent, man.

Fucking set up!

One police force in Britain

has a disturbing record of
locking up the wrong people

in murder cases.

-This is what they do!

-This is what they do to us!

-What they tried to do to us!

Wayne and Paul Darvell,

free men after seven long years in custody

for a murder they didn't commit.

-Have you got anything to say about

the police officers who
actually stitched you up?

-No comment, no.

No comment.

-I'm delighted to be freed
by the Court of Appeal.

I'm delighted to have been cleared.

It's taken an awful long time.

-I want to be with my kids and my husband.

With my family.

They got too much previous

for getting things wrong,

But not just getting things wrong,

getting things deliberately wrong, you know?

How confident are you

that Dave Morris is the Clydach murderer?

-Hundred percent.

I have no doubt at all

that David Morris is the killer.

No doubt at all.

A forensic review is to be carried out

on the evidence which helped convict

a Swansea Valley man for the murders

of three generations of the same family.

In October, "BBC Wales
Investigates" raised new questions

about the guilt of David Morris,

who was jailed in 2006.

We can't deny that there is a huge movement

in support of Dai Morris.

There's politicians coming forward

saying this case needs to be looked at.

Why do you think that he has this support?

-This case has been looked at

and looked at and looked at and explored.

I'm puzzled as to why people can't see Morris

for what he is.

We're putting to you, David,

what witness statements are saying.

David, it's not as though
it's going out from here.

-No, I...

Those statements have come back...

-I understand that, but I
can't understand why you,

I can't understand,

I honestly can't understand
why this is happening.

-Can you imagine anybody ever saying,

"I'm the monster that's done this?"

That's never gonna happen.

What does this say about them as a person,

if they make these admissions?

There's lots of rumors and innuendos.

Everybody wants to be an armchair detective,

but they don't know the facts.

It's something which is almost beyond belief,

the actual true story of this case.

Wales have opened

the New Millennium Stadium in Cardiff

with an historic win over the
world champion, South Africa.

Their 29-19 victory overshadowed
problems at the turnstiles,

which caused an 18 minute delay to the start.

Sensing that rugby history was being made,

the bulldozer tackling and...

I was up late that night, sewing.

It was a very close night, very, very warm.

Shall I put your tea away, then, Rosemary?

When you look across the road, Rosemary,

when you see the awful site of that house.

-Doesn't worry me.

It does not worry me at all.

What worries me is what
happened inside the house.

Do you think you'll all be able to...

-No.

No.

Get on about...

-You can say your
prayers as much as you like,

but it isn't, er, it just won't go away.

It's not going to go away.

So, what happened next, then?

-I went to bed at quarter to one.

And I noticed across the
road, there was no light

in Mandy's house and very, very dark.

Very, very dark.

I woke when I heard a
vehicle coming across the road

and it sounded like diesel.

And it stopped outside and I thought,

"Who on earth is that?"

And I thought, "Oh,
somebody's going into Mandy's."

And with that, the door opened.

I know it was pitch dark,
but I could slightly hear it.

And with that, the light came on.

At that point, I thought it was Mandy.

But knowing now it wasn't,

because she got home at
ten to 12 with the children.

Who do you think that person was?

-I really don't know.

But whoever came back that time,

must have come back

to set the house on fire.

Hello?

Oh, hello.

We've got a call now to a house fire

at Kelvin Road, Clydach.

What have we got?

It's a possible persons reported.

I don't know how many
casualties are involved,

but it sounds a serious situation.

As we pulled into the street,

neighbors confirmed
there was a family in there.

We entered the ground floor.

We had a substantial fire in the kitchen.

-They went in to sort the fire out.

That's when I went upstairs to do a search.

We were hoping there'd
have been a rescue, but, er,

things didn't work out

as they were supposed to.

About halfway up the stairs,

the visibility was hardly anything.

Just black.

You could not see nothing.

It's just all by feel.

My knees were on the top last step

before going onto the landing.

My face was down low.

I'd done a sweep with my hands.

I found one of the children.

Done another sweep again.

Found the other child.

I put my knees just onto the landing.

I done another sweep.

And that's where I found Mandy.

-We tried our best to bring anyone back,

but they were all gone before we got there.

I believe it was the youngest child, Emily,

that was handed to me.

The back of her head was badly damaged.

Erm, yeah, so...

There was no doubt in my mind that erm,

she'd not died in that fire

and been the victim of something.

-By this time now the
smoke is starting to clear.

And then we found Doris in bed,

laying there with

a big cut down her face.

Something very evil happened in there.

The injuries they'd done to those two kids,

Mandy, and Doris,

I wouldn't call him a person myself.

An animal.

It's ridiculous.

Absolutely ridiculous.

A crowd had gathered outside the property.

A lot of neighbors were out on the street.

We're now turning in to Kelvin Road.

There's very few police there.

In back of Kelvin Road.

And at the time did that strike you as odd?

-Yeah, certainly, I mean,

you know, I'd expect to see, you know,

we have a car fire, we normally have

three police cars turn up

so I was surprised it wasn't more.

There was one senior officer there.

My commanding officer
went up to that police officer

and made the statement that this was not

a normal, standard house fire.

And there was a likelihood of foul play.

-The message that I got,
it was a fatal house fire

involving four people

and they thought it might
have been an electrical fault.

When I got to the scene,

three of the bodies had
been taken out of the house

and it was quite clear when looking at them,

they'd all suffered a dreadful death.

This clearly wasn't a fatal house fire.

It was a homicide where
four people been murdered

and the killer had tried
to cover their tracks

by setting fire to the house.

-The house, which was once

the center of a happy family life

is now the scene of one of the biggest

murder investigations ever launched in Wales.

80 year old Doris Dawson had been living here

for the past 18 months

with her 34 year old divorced
daughter, Mandy Power,

who is said to be a devoted
mother to her two daughters,

Katie, who was 10 and 8 year old Emily.

As detectives continue
their painstaking search

of the crime scene,

prayers are being said for
the children, their mother,

and grandmother within the community

of which they were so much a part.

-Beyond belief, isn't it?

I attend church every Sunday and

it certainly knocks your
faith, really, doesn't it,

when something like this happens.

-They were wonderful.

Mandy, she was such a dedicated mum.

And the girls...

They were beautiful.

And they were really starting to grow up.

It's an awful thing to happen.

The person had come to the house,

wasn't prepared to kill the family.

This is the front entrance door

on number 9, Kelvin Road, Clydach.

There was no sign of
forced entry to the house.

We're now entering the
hallway of the premises.

The killer didn't bring a murder weapon

to the scene.

We are now viewing the stairs of premises,

which is to the right of the entrance door.

-But lying on top of the landing

was a fiberglass pole,

which was about a meter and a half in length,

2.2 kilos in weight.

It had been left in the
house by the former occupier

and the children used to play with it.

The killer had used a sock
on their hands as a glove.

Then the killer used this
fiberglass pole to attack Mandy.

Now as a result of killing Mandy,

all four had to be murdered.

We are now viewing into the front bedroom,

which is a children's bedroom.

-They'd been hit multiple times.

A defenseless eight year
old girl, a 10 year old girl,

a 34 year old mother
and an 80 year old woman,

who was dying.

Doris only had months to
live, she was extremely ill.

So who could commit this
dreadful crime to these people?

We're now moving into the mother's bedroom.

-Emily would've screamed that house down.

That's why I can't
understand how nobody heard.

Mandy, all the kids.

It had to be someone they knew.

interview with Louise Pugh.

Louise, can you just identify for the tape?

Louise Anne Pugh, date of birth 03/05/83.

And her mother is also with us.

I'm Christina Pugh.

-My mother rented the
house next door to Mandy's

on Kelvin Road.

I thought of them as family, not just,

"Well, they're my next
door neighbors," you know?

I always used to run to her house

whenever my mother shouted at me.

This was after my dad left.

Erm...

I used to go upstairs, go in my drawers,

get my knickers and vests,
put them under my arm,

and I'd walk down the
road to Mandy's and Doris's.

They just were a lovely
little family, you know?

When the police showed up to speak to me,

they wanted me to go into detail about Mandy.

How would you describe Mandy

to someone who's never known her before?

Off her head.

Very impulsive, as well, but, no,

she's a lovely person, you know.

She always had time for people.

She'd be the life and
soul of the party, like.

She was, she was just...

She was up to this mood, she was.

She was very family orientated.

And she loved her kids.

When Mandy's marriage broke down,

there was a time where she was low.

After she sort of came
out of her down period then,

she seemed to want

more enjoyment out of life.

She did attract a lot of attention.

-I felt that the main victim was Mandy.

That the answer lay somewhere with Mandy.

After the murders, the
killer strips her naked,

then puts a vibrator inside her.

And, lying on the carpet was a gold chain,

soaked in blood where she'd been murdered.

There were no financial worries.

She was not involved in drugs.

She was not involved in any criminality.

In in fact, she was a very happy, friendly,

likable individual.

Why would somebody want to kill Mandy?

-Mandy didn't use men.

She just wanted to feel that love back.

But she was

looking for love in the wrong places.

I think Mandy played around

with two different lives.

And then one caught up with her.

-The Swansea Valley community,

where three generations of the same family

were brutally murdered at the weekend

is trying to come to
terms with the full horror

of their deaths.

Two children, their mother,
and disabled grandmother

were attacked at their home in Clydach,

before the killer started
fires to conceal the crime.

Here's our chief reporter, Penny Roberts.

-Jamie, well, the investigation
has been intensified,

as you might expect.

Very little to report on the
details of that investigation.

I'll certainly know more
in half an hour's time.

I'll be attending a news conference at

Cockett police station,

which has been called by
the man leading the hunt.

What I can tell you is that
the forensic effort here...

I think on the Sunday,

when we discovered that
there'd been a fire in Kelvin Road,

I think I felt it was very tragic,

but a routine job, if I
can describe it as that.

By the Monday morning,

I realized that I was dealing with something

very, very different.

And as time went on, er, you know, it was,

it was clear that it was a story that

I have never dealt with the like of before

and hopefully would never
have to deal with again.

That first press conference
was extraordinary.

I remember Martyn Lloyd-Evans walking in and

he looked as if he had
the weight of the world

on his shoulders.

I mean, he had to find the killer.

And I think the pressure was on.

-It's quite clear from the
injuries sustained by Mandy,

that she's been subject
to a very physical assault.

There's also signs that
she's been sexually assaulted.

-And it became clear during
that press conference that

Mandy's life wasn't
particularly straightforward.

-We know Mandy, that was
a, was a devoted mother,

had two children, committed to her family,

was a lively, bubbly
individual, and so full of life.

Since separating from her husband,

we know that she has had both
male and female relationships.

-Later on that day,

there was quite a crowd outside the house.

And the gossip at this point
was about Mandy's private life.

I remember one woman, who I later found out

was in a gay relationship.

Her partner was with her
and they were talking to me.

-The last few months in her life, she said

she's never been so happy.

So I can't understand
what has happened to her.

I know she'd had a
friend and as I said, it's...

-They were local taxi drivers

and they said, erm,

"Ask the police about Alison Lewis."

I found out that Mandy
had been having an affair.

A sexual relationship with Alison Lewis.

-Come on, girls.

Let's have a run, let's have a go!

She was very strong

and she was good at
sports, very good at sports.

Well played!

Go for it, Al!

Well done, Alison!

Go for it!

-Just take that last ball.

Sheryl's probably the best passer here.

Crash ball number one.

She was a capped rugby player.

She played for Wales.

Good fall, fullback!

-And then we found out that

Alison used to be a police officer.

I realized then that

nothing was going to be very
straightforward in Clydach.

Just taking you back to the morning after.

Do you remember seeing Alison that morning?

Did you notice her on Kelvin Road?

-I remember making tea for the fire brigade.

I took it out on a tray.

Then I went over to see to another neighbor,

living two doors away.

And we were always very,
very friendly with Mandy.

And with this, Alison Lewis came from

the left-hand side of the road,
which means the garden side.

And she had wet hair,
rosy cheeks, and she had,

if I'm right, she had green
shorts and a green top on.

And so when you saw Alison...

-Yes.

She was freshly showered.

Very briefly, someone somewhere must know

something about this.

-I'm quite sure that
someone knows about this.

There's no doubt that the attacker is,

was heavily blood stained,

has fled this scene sometime

in the early hours of the morning.

And I'm appealing for people, please,

if you do know something, come forward.

Right, you were at the house this morning

and I know David was
talking to you about, erm,

the pole, you know?

Yeah.

That, erm,

has been mentioned as
being the murder weapon.

Okay?

Yeah.

At the house.

Okay?

You gave a statement.

-The police asked me,
obviously, about the pole.

I think it was just an off-cut of something.

'Cause it wasn't, you know,
used for anything in the house.

But Emily liked to, you know, twirl it

and spin it on the floor and you know, just

being a kid, really.

You tell me what you
remember about the pole and

the day that you described when

it was being swung around the house.

It was all right outside.

It wasn't raining, it
wasn't sunny, it was just...

You know, blue skies sort of thing.

And, erm...

I think it was a couple of weeks before

and she was spinning it on the floor

and it knocked Katie's ankle.

And then she obviously had to say sorry,

but Mandy got flustered and she said, just,

she said, "Louise, just do me a favor."

"Get it out of the bloody house."

I went out the back, walked up the steps,

turned to the shed,

and there was a gap
between the shed and the wall.

So I slid the pole down the side of the shed.

Was there anyone who saw you

put the pole in that place?

I put it down the side of the shed.

But I put it down there 'cause
they didn't like long grass.

When I turned 'round,

Alison was standing in the door.

And was anybody else watching you

at that point?

-No.

That was the last time I saw her.

In the town of Clydach today,

there's considerable anger about revelations

in the tabloid press about
Mandy Power's private life

and relationships.

-I just think that all this
is absolutely awful, really.

I don't think there's any need of it at all.

-Well, that's what the
tabloids do, don't they?

They destroy people.

If they can't do it when they're alive,

they can do it when they're dead.

There's no one to protect them.

34 Year old Mandy Power
was sexually assaulted

then bludgeoned to death...

-There was a bit of a feeding frenzy

as far as the tabloid press was concerned.

We're talking about more than 20 years ago.

And I think more than 20 years ago, erm,

there was a different atmosphere as far as

gay relationships went.

It was still very noteworthy

that a young, attractive divorcee

who had two children was having an affair,

a lesbian affair with a former policewoman.

And, erm...

A lot of people, including the journalists

that were covering the case,
were focused on Alison Lewis.

She was hounded out.

Everybody was pointing the finger at her.

She was labeled a murderer.

And I think she wanted
to stand up for herself.

How difficult is it to have people

whispering behind your back all the time?

-Terrible.

Dreadful.

It's almost unbearable at times.

'Cause we're not talking
about any crimes here.

We're talking about horrendous violent crimes

against four defenseless people.

And anybody looking at this case

who didn't know the people who died,

you know, would be shocked

by what they went through.

And how can anybody say
that they can live with the fact

that somebody may look at you

and think, "Well, did she do it?"

"Did she?"

"Was she capable of doing that?"

It's, on times it's almost unbearable.

But the one thing that keeps me going

is that I know I didn't do it.

I know that I would've done anything

to have protected them that night.

-I found her credible.

She was crying.

Erm...

I thought she was either

an Oscar winning actress

or she was telling the truth.

-There is no evidence to say

that I am responsible for this.

I would never have hurt any of them.

My only guilt is that I didn't know

they were fighting for
their lives in Kelvin Road

and I was at home in bed in Pontardawe.

And that's my guilt.

And that's what I live with.

Can you remember when you first learned

about Mandy's relationship with Alison?

-Well, Mandy started going to watch the rugby

down at Vardre Rugby Club.

She'd come back and
they'd been on a night out

and she's going, "Right",

"I'm a lesbian."

Say what?

She said, "I'm a lesbian."

I went, "No, you're not."

So Katie went upstairs,

this was before Mandy'd
gone up there to tell Doris.

And then all you could hear
was Doris shouting down.

"Do you wanna come up here"

"and tell me what you've gotta say?"

Katie'd been up and told her already.

That was funny, though.

Doris said to her then,
"As long as you're happy,"

"that's all I want you is to be happy."

Which was true.

That's all she wanted
for any of 'em, you know?

Things took a change, then.

The sort of rugby crowd
would start coming to the house

then and whatever.

Alison would come down.

She'd bring her children.

Mandy was very much bubbly, outgoing.

But even though Alison was, you know,

a solid woman then, and she was well trained,

she was much more reserved than Mandy.

There was, like, obviously
trust and jealousy issues,

because obviously Mandy was very flirty.

And, er...

You know, especially if they'd go out

in the Clydach village.

Quite often, Mandy and
Alison would come back and

they'd argue.

There was once, and there was an ornament

and it got thrown and it, it hit the wall

just by Mandy's head, so.

I think she did care about Mandy, but

she was just fragile.

She had too much going on.

I think it would've been
okay if Alison wasn't married.

Who was she married to?

Stephen Lewis.

He was a police officer.

Did Stephen know about Alison's relationship

with Mandy?
