This programme contains some strong language, scenes of a sexual nature

and scenes which some viewers may find upsetting from the start

- It happened at the steelworks.

His name was Lewis Jeffries...

..the lad that died.

We went to the same school, I think.

He was working away...

..as you do, when he slips...

..straight into a vat of molten slag.

His dad was on the same shift, apparently.

Saw it all.

Alwyn...

..I think his name is.

Just had to stand there and watch it happen.

Imagine that.

It's weird though, cos...

..I know it's bad, like, what happened, but...

..I don't really feel anything about it.

I don't feel much about anything these days.

It's like I can see where I am...

..and I can see where I've been...

..but I can't see where I'm going.

I can't even, like...

..imagine it.

There's too much going on in my head.

Too many clouds.

I just want something to happen.

I want something to come here...

..to this place,

and burn all the clouds away.

Blow them all up.

- ECHOING: - Change everything.

And, quite frankly, it can't come soon enough.

- What the bloody hell is that?

- I bollocksed up the order, didn't I? They're meant to be bunnies

and badgers, but everyone's just going to have to decide

to be fine with it, OK? Oh, shit, I forgot tinfoil! - Got it.

- Ta, Mam. Mwah.

- Right, I'll go and get the cake. I'll be back now. - See you in a bit.

Will "he" be making an appearance?

- Any chills? Stomach cramps?

Any diarrhoea?

- No.

- You're not 12, Owen.

- No, doctor, I'm not shitting myself.

- OK.

Your next cycle of benzodiazepine...

..two pills a day.

Small goals every day, still?

Such as?

- Walk places, listen to shit...

..the odd wank.

- Good for you.

- My mad mam, she leaves me these talking CDs from her charity shop.

It's utter bollocks but for some reason they, like, calm me down.

I don't hear the words, I just like the sound of someone talking to me.

Stops my own brain going, you know?

- That's what the medication should be doing for you.

- I can't remember the last time I...

..felt anything.

Is that normal?

I don't know... It doesn't matter.

- Mam! Mam, can you get that, please?!

- Hello, love.

- Woo, woo, woo! - Look at him going now.

- Hip-hip, hooray, three cheers for Rhys!

- ALL: - Hooray!

Yay!

- I quite fancy this one. Is it Clint Eastwood, yeah?

- Daft bugger, that's Joe Bidden, mun. - Biden!

- Oh, look at this one.

- Thea, really? In this house?

- Don't assume that everybody around you has your politics, Dee Driscoll.

I wouldn't have bought my own house if it wasn't for her.

- Well, we don't need her scaring the other kids.

The enemy without.

- So, the elephant in the room?

Or should I say, isn't in the room? - Your brother's not at home.

I don't know where he is, but he's not there.

- God, he knows how to hold a grudge.

Ham!

Hi.

- Hiya.

- It's not my birthday, is it? It's Rhys'. Give it to him.

Ooh, what's this?

Ah! Say thank you to Auntie Heledd, Rhys.

- Diolch. - O, cariad, dere a cwtch mawr i fi. Ooh!

- And he's started his numbers, too, haven't you? Un, dau, tri...

- Pedwar, pump...

- PHONE RINGS

- Oh, look, it's Dada, all the way from Germany. Wave hello.

- Hello, little man. Hiya.

I wanted to watch you open your pressies. Haven't you done well, eh?

- Right, I'm just going to give you to my mam for a second, OK,

because we've got a big present... - Hiya, love. - ..to open now.

Look at this one! Whoa! Who got you this, I wonder?

- That's from me, that is.

Go on, then.

- Go on, then, get it open. - Look at that!

See, you build it and you push marbles down it all the way.

I used to have one like this when I was a kid.

- It's ages eight and up, Dad. - Eh? - He's four.

- Oh...

- Right, Mammy has to get ready for work. Wave bye to Dada.

- Do you not know how old he is?

- Of course I know how old he is.

I didn't know how old THAT was.

It's something you can build with your hands.

Real things - you can touch.

- You've still got a load of crap in the shed, still.

Don't you think it's time you cleared all that out?

- I don't know.

Is it?

Unbelievable, isn't it, what Alwyn did?

I can't get it out of my head.

- Yeah.

I mean, is it any wonder, though?

I don't know, there's a lot of desperate people out there,

feeling angry and alone.

Just...

..stuck.

- I've got this feeling I can't shake. I don't know...

I'll be back for brekkie tomorrow. - OK, bach.

And what you might not know is that metal production on this site

goes all the way back to the 1100s,

when Margam Abbey was founded here and iron smelting began.

Steel produced here built the modern world.

It's Port Talbot steel on the roof of the White House in America.

And this...

..is one of the first examples of smelting on this site.

A sword which we unearthed and now stands here for our protection.

Because there are those who say that if the pilot light above us,

the one you can see all over town,

if that was ever to go out, then the town will fall.

Ah, don't worry, it's only a myth.

- What's a myth? - It's a stupid story.

- It's not stupid.

And we need stories to remind us of who we are.

Like this replica of a monk's habit from the old Abbey.

And, you know, the last monk to leave here, centuries ago,

decreed that a part of the Abbey must always remain standing

or a curse will fall on Port Talbot.

And that's why we've still got a bit of it

propped up with girders outside.

And some people even claim to have seen the ghost of that red monk

wandering the site.

Oh, my God, there he is!

- It doesn't matter if it happened "outside the steelworks"!

A man set himself on fire after losing his son INSIDE these works!

I mean, it's all one - it's connected.

Jesus! What must be going on inside a fella

for that to be less painful than the grief, eh?!

So, with Alwyn and Lewis Jeffries in mind,

on behalf of the wider union, I have a list of grievances here,

and it's "a spade is a spade" time.

Are you committed to long-term investment in this plant or not?

- I think what Glynn is... It's helpful to remind the board

that these works are the heart of the community.

- I know that for the past... well, few decades,

all British industry has been losing out to emerging markets,

which is why Head Office is moving forward

with a multimillion-pound investment to reline Furnace Five.

- Well, I think our workforce will be very encouraged...

- Might the shop steward and I speak privately, please, Mr Kwan?

We just can't be palmed off by these people!

OK, look, Geoff, we know you're very grateful for the little "museum"

you got given here to run, but you're meant to be fighting

on behalf of your workers, not be a yes-man.

Don't let them fob you off with a minor fucking paint job!

What would your father say?

- My father didn't work here, Glynn. He was a miner, not a steelworker.

- But he... - He would have done whatever he thought

was in the best interest of this town.

So, shall we get the managers back in here

and accept their multimillion-pound investment, hmm?

Your fella works abroad, doesn't he, Sarge?

- He works for a security and surveillance firm in Germany, yes.

- Wow. Germany?

What's in Germany?

- More money is in Germany.

- The darkness drops again!

20 centuries of stony sleep...

- All right, Simon?

You up to your old tricks again?

- Things fall apart.

The centre cannot...cannot hold!

Mere, mere anarchy loosed upon the world!

- Yeah, nice. It's very foreboding.

How's about you come with us for a night, eh?

Get tidied up and something warm inside you?

- That would be nice, actually.

- PC Ryan, can you...?

- Come on, mate. Let's get you dressed.

- What is it that rises up...

..the same moment it falls?

Do you know?

Do you? - Nope.

- You will.

You will. - Let's go.

Once upon a time, in a kingdom...

..far, far away...

- Erm, hi.

Anna, right?

- ..hidden by mountains and covered by clouds...

..lay an old and very wet land...

..where queens cast spells that last forever...

..and children were forever getting lost in the woods.

Kings slept for 100 years...

..and there were always secret riddles and enchanted rings...

..and magic beans.

..and they all lived happily ever after.

- It's legit.

Doctor-prescribed.

Like a nicotine patch.

A small amount just to get you through.

- That's too many to have been GP-prescribed. Are you dealing?

I don't care. Not my business.

Do you ever swim in that?

- No!

Freeze your tits off.

- You know...

..that was the first sea I ever saw.

To leave home and travel across the world without seeing the water once.

Bus from Leczyca to Lodz,

train from Lodz to Paris...

..under the sea from Paris to London, a coach to Swansea,

and there she was.

- My grandad's in there, actually.

His ashes.

Before I was born.

That's what he wanted, apparently.

Get it over quickly.

Quietly.

Shit! What the...?!

- SIREN

ALARM SOUNDS

SIREN

- Thea, what the fuck is going on?!

- It's the steelworks, Mam.

Something's going on at the steelworks.

- Oh, my God!

- Fuckin' hell!

- An emergency siren?! What was the emergency?!

- Listen. It was an accidental repercussion

of shutting down that phase for renovations.

We don't know why it triggered the siren, nor why it cut out the light,

but it'll be re-lit as soon as possible.

- And how are we to trust you?! - OK... - What if this is the real plan, eh?!

To close us down, phase by phase?

You're just swooping in to asset strip us and then swoop out again.

- Swoop? What is that supposed...? - I think it would help

to have better communication, that's all, Mr Kwan.

- We are not here to close you down!

- You get that light re-lit, do you hear me?!

And we're talking hours, right, not days, right?! Or else!

- I could have warned you, if you'd asked.

To tread carefully.

These things are sensitive. - Exactly. Everyone is too sensitive.

- Because they've been led to be over the years.

A lack of trust. - I thought we had an understanding, Geoff. Just fix this.

- I've been thinking about him a lot lately.

Don't know about you.

Since Alwyn.

The bloke with the fire.

It got to me.

I've just turned his age.

My dad.

I'm just that little bit older now.

I've gone a little bit beyond his age.

Beyond the age of my father.

You were a good friend to him, Rhodri.

Look, Rhys, it's Uncle Owen.

You missed your nephew's birthday. He turned four years old.

That basically means you've missed one quarter of his entire birthdays.

I'll get you a tea. Sit. - I don't want a tea.

- Anything else? - Yeah. A cup of builder's tea for him.

- I don't want a cup of tea! You got a sec?

- I'm working. I'll get your tea. - I don't want a fucking...!

- Are you dealing again?

I'm asking as a sister, not a copper. - There's no difference.

There's no difference, is there?

As was made very clear when you arrested me.

- Mam says you're always out. Why?

- The thing about St Dee Driscoll, sis, is that all she wants to do

is mother people. Only, I don't need that no more. - And what about Dad?

- Have I got a dad?

- People are getting rattled about the plant, the pilot light

and just everything. Everyone seems on edge all the time,

so just you make sure you look after... - What happens will happen.

Happy birthday, Rhys.

Well, we got interrupted the other night.

- I don't do repeat viewings. I like to keep things simple.

And a drug dealer who is in recovery, dealing drugs?

That's not simple.

- You just need to compartmentalise, that's all.

I compartmentalise everything.

Best way to live.

- I'm Port Talbot's representative in the Welsh Parliament,

but do I have any say on Welsh industrial policy? No.

Jack does - the Westminster MP.

Globalisation has buggered us up.

Well, the nation state is back. People want borders again.

Perhaps even borders within kingdoms.

And in a crisis, and we have sleepwalked into a crisis,

economic, political, social, it's a time to question everything,

including the Union itself.

- Well, I'll always believe that it's better

to make compromises as a unit, together.

But the one thing that I agree with Mr Griffiths on

is what the steelworks represent,

which is the very last of an old world, about to die.

I'm doing all that I can to find consensus,

rather than those trying to stoke divisions

and divide us into left, right, young, old, leave, remain.

Somewhere and someplace, I fear a fuse will be lit...

- Yeah, well, I think a fuse should be lit.

- Someone will be in touch, OK? - OK, thank you.

- I just sometimes feel, erm...

..like maybe I need...

..like, without these little hits...

..you know, little highs that... - What do you want, Owen?

Look, you're very sweet and pretty handsome

and fairly good in bed... - Thank you.

- ..but you're not going to find it in this, with me.

I'm sorry.

I want to pass my course, do well, and then probably leave.

But I honestly hope that you do find it, Owen.

I really do.

- They say we'll get millions!

Yeah, they're investing, in order to cut bloody jobs!

- Why is it only here where investment actually fucks us over?!

- Yeah, investment that cuts bloody jobs!

- You don't know what you're bloody talking about!

- They promised us, didn't they? - ALL: - Yes!

- They promised us that light would go back on. - ALL: - Yes!

- Is that light back on?! - ALL: - No!

- Why?! They're up to something! Wake up!

- Exactly. - We all owe it to Alwyn and Lewis Jeffries!

I don't know why you didn't all walk out then.

- Yeah, but it's not just about the steelworks, is it?

I mean, I look around, and what about our young people?

Lord Almighty! I mean, isn't the deal meant to be

that we're hit with just one crisis per generation?

Like, I don't know, like a war, or a crash, or even a pandemic?

My daughter, she's had one of each.

How do we give them some goddamn bloody hope?!

- Well said! Well said!

- Other sectors have shown courage.

Nurses. - Yeah.

- Rail workers. - ALL: - Yes!

The thing is, right... - Yes, Dee, come on.

- We always just lurch, don't we?

People like us, places like this.

The fate of the steelworks is forever in the balance.

This week, next week...

- MURMURS OF AGREEMENT

- You know, we're constantly on edge.

Grateful for any tiny reprieve.

But the next threat always comes.

And it's exhausting! - Yes, it is.

- It means there's never any peace and there's never any power here.

Aren't you just sick of feeling like we have no power? - ALL: - Yes.

- And what DID happen to Lewis Jeffries?

And the lack of care and help for Alwyn after.

These are not just accidents, hiccups.

These are symptomatic. - ALL: - Yes!

- They just don't care.

This lot, that lot, any of them.

- OK, well, I say it's all-or-nothing time! - ALL: - Yes!

- Either they guarantee the steelworks' life

for another full decade or we take the bull by the horns!

A pre-emptive strike, by going on strike now! - ALL: - Yes!

- Like the fights of old!

The General Strike! the Miners' Strike!

- ALL: - Yes!

- But that wasn't a fight, was it?

It was an ambush.

They wanted my father and the union to strike.

To beat them.

To break him. - No!

Denny Driscoll was a hero!

- VOICES IN AGREEMENT

- He never gave up.

- That's right. Those of you too young...

..Denny Driscoll and 102 other striking miners

climbed those cranes on the dockside

to stop foreign coal from getting in,

hanging more than 200 feet in the air for days, in the wind and rain.

They saw that they needed to fight and your father fought!

- For God's sake. He killed himself!

We all know it, and-and we go on pretending.

Yes, he fought.

He led everyone over the top with him

and then he couldn't live with himself, having lost.

I saw that light leave him.

Like exactly as I saw in Alwyn that day. - No, Geoff.

I'm sorry, but...

..no-one knows why Alwyn did what he did,

but he probably felt like it was the only control he had left.

Some last act of defiance.

- Right, OK, yeah...

..you go on romanticising that pain as much as you like.

Go and tell his grieving daughters about their dad's act of defiance.

- Maybe they're not like you.

Jesus!

When I first met you, you were practically an anarchist.

Full of the fight.

Well, some of us still believe even a lost cause is worth fighting.

these very rooms together, eh?

I've been coming here most nights for years, and I sit here alone!

- He's right.

Erm, it's Geoff, is it?

- Mm. Yeah.

- Those historic struggles, they were launched

from a place of structures that have all vanished.

And they still bloody failed.

Now, we need to think smart and carefully, OK?

Did it ever occur to any of you that the management,

they aren't trying to screw you over?
