I came to Mount Athos 40 years ago.

I lived in a large monastery
for the first 17 years.

After that I visited Egypt,
where I stayed for six months

at Saint Catherine's monastery
on Mount Sinai.

In 1990 I came to Athos, to Mylopotamos,

and had to rebuild everything here.

For Christians, Mount Athos is unique.

The monastic tradition was established
here more than 1,000 years ago.

The Holy Mountain is for me…

to use the words of Christ,
the "salt of the earth".

It's the core of the Christian faith.

I've been up there ten times.

Every ascent was hard,
from the first to the last.

I had no experience with animals,

because I'm from the city.

I had no idea what to do
and was even scared of them.

I didn't know how to ride,

but I learned.

Humans have always felt…

the urge to climb
to the tops of mountains.

It shows that…

When you reach the top…

it's like achieving a higher goal.

What we human beings achieve in our lives

is like the conquest of a mountain.

In the New Testament
we read that Jesus Christ climbed

a high mountain with his disciples
to reveal to them his divinity.

Thus, the Chapel of the Transfiguration
of Christ is on the summit of Athos.

The human soul cleanses itself

through the effort of climbing up.

The summit of Mount Athos
holds a strong spiritual power

from the many ascetics and saints

who have made their experiences here,

and who have transferred them to Athos
over the course of more than 1,000 years.

The Lord directs me

And nothing will be lacking to me

To the water of refreshment

On the paths of justice

For the sake of his name

The Holy Mountain is also called…

the Garden of the Holy Virgin Mary.

The monks…

are compared to blossoms.

It's here that they are planted,
grow and develop their scent.

Mary is our Mother.

There is no woman on the Holy Mountain
but the Holy Mother.

As the old Fathers used to say:

Prayer, attention and work

are safe ways to tame
your thoughts and your passions

in order to follow God's will.

What a lovely church!

This is the biggest church on Athos,
it's about 100 years old.

It's the newest and largest.

Very impressive,
but not exactly in the tradition of Athos.

I'm bringing you to a special place now.

We call it the "philosophic school".

What you can see here is very unusual
for someone from the outside world.

When a monk passes away on Athos,

We don't say "die",
because we believe in resurrection.

after some time,
we remove him from his tomb.

Then we put him on these shelves.

Some skulls belong to simple monks,
others to abbots,

but the same thing awaits all of us.

Every day, during the service,
we light a candle.

-Are those arm and leg bones?

According to an old story,
a monk once came in here and shouted:

"Christ is risen from the dead!"

The bones moved and replied:
"Truly, he is risen!"

So you see, life goes on.

I've been here for about five-six years,

exactly as long as I was on Mount Sinai.

No matter where you are,
God is everywhere.

The Holy Mountain is a monastic state,

an entire state dedicated to prayer.

We have experienced Fathers here,
who can help you along spiritually.

That's why I came to Athos.

When I arrived here from Sinai
I was given this hermitage.

It was in a bad state of repair.

But you could live in here.

At least the roof held up.

After one year

I knew that I liked it here. So, I stayed.

You have to carry on a craft
in order to make a living.

Some monks produce incense,
some paint icons…

some work with wood.

I learned this little handicraft

and I live from it.

It's also a way of passing the time.

You can't pray or read all day.

You have to do something.

On the Holy Mountain
there are three kinds of monks.

Some live in a community
and do everything together:

the meals, the liturgy.

Many monks live like that.

Then there are smaller communities,
with five or only two Fathers.

And then there are those who live alone.

Father, bless us.

The feeling

The aim is the same for all monks:
You try to purify your soul.

You try to free yourself from passions
and weakness, above all from egoism.

Egoism is fought through obedience
to the Superior in the monastery

or through mutual obedience
among the monks.

The monk has to constantly control
his mind

and reassess his thoughts.

When someone lives alone,

they can easily become depressed.

You have to oppose that.

A monk can then pass on
this experience to others.

When we heal our own soul,
we are able to help others, too.

It has to be filled.

We've always dreamed of having
our own house on the Holy Mountain.

We wanted to live here,
because it's a blessed place.

Abbot Gabriel offered us the house.

Our community decided

that two of us should go ahead

and renovate the hermitage.

Other brothers from our monastery
will follow later.

We're in close contact with them.

whether on Athos or on Sinai,

You just need patience.

It's about the manner

in which you conduct your fight.

I believe
that you will only find peace in death

unless you experience the grace of God
in great measure.

Only if you've reached
such a high spiritual level,

will you find peace. And by peace
I mean spiritual, inner peace.

Because grief and worries
are going to follow us, until we die.

there are people who have the desire

to escape from the world and be alone.

There is only a little door

that leads in here from the outside world.

It protects us monks
from too big of a rush.

If all doors were open
and everything was more relaxed

this wouldn't be a place
of peace and prayer anymore.

It wouldn't be a centre of spirituality,

it would be a curiosity,
a museum or a resort.

For the Lord is a great God…

Monks think and act differently

from the people outside in the world.

For this reason, the monks are the light

for the rest of the people
in the secular world.

They lead the way…

for those who wish to reach Christ.

It's a part of the nature
and mission of Athos

to help people collect themselves
and find inner peace.

When a mother suckles her newborn child

the baby gets used to crying for milk.

But eventually, the mother
has to wean it off her milk.

In the same way, every monk
has to be "weaned" off the world.

The monk flees
from the meaninglessness of the world…

and finds a new family in the monastery.

Not everyone finds this easy,

as some of us have
a close relationship with our mother.

Others not so much.

But as a monk, you have
to sever the bond once and for all.

Otherwise you'll have
bigger and bigger problems.

Over the years,
you understand this even better.

You become distant from your parents
and they from you.

You forget each other,
lose sight of each other.

That's difficult and arduous.

It's a part of our struggle
to get along with as little as possible.

Not to be bound to too many things.

That wouldn't help you
develop spiritually.

Nothing much happens outside the routine.

As a monk you maybe go
to a celebration now and then.

There, you meet other Fathers
and discuss with each other.

You chat a little.
Chat in a good sense, of course.

It gives you a break from everyday life
and you get to see other faces.
