(Episode 50)

Your Majesty, that's utterly unreasonable

Please take your words back

Your Majesty...

This concerns only myself!

I trust this person, with great skill

and talents, I'm making this person my personal physician...

so why would you argue about this?!

Your Majesty!

Minister, listen I'm appointing Jang-Geum...

as my personal physician so go ahead and do that

(Letter of resignation)

What are you saying?

The King wants Jang-Geum as his personal physician?

That's nonsense You must've heard wrong

That's what he commanded

No way! How could a physician lady be the King's personal physician?!

I thought you weren't coming

Why would I not come? Let's go

Sir Min didn't come in yet?

He did. He told me to give this to you

Where is he right now?!

He left

Find him quickly! Right now!

Huh?

How could he resign when the court is in shambles over the King's order...

to have Jang-Geum as his personal physician?!

Huh?

Bring him by any means!

If you don't, things could get much worse!

What does it say?

What does it say?

What does it say?!

Jang-Geum... Jang-Geum...

Jang-Geum's leaving, right?

How did you know?

Leaving with Sir Min, right?

How did you know that?!

She'll write when she settles down, right?

How did you...?

I've done business with the scholar-official class...

for over 40 years now

I know exactly what they're thinking

I know that... I can't stay here like this

I should go and get Jang-Geum!

No way. It's a good thing

Good thing?

Or else how could she be with Sir Min?

That's too bad... I have to be able to see her!

Where are you going?!

Get my foot

Are you afraid? My heart flutters

Is your heart fluttering?

Are you afraid?

I'm happy... My heart's overflowing with emotions

And I feel comfortable

I'm afraid

I'm afraid that this might be a dream

So you're asking if a pretty lady and a handsome man...

got on a boat?

Yes. Did they or not?

Pay up first

You're just like my wife!

Forget it, then

OK... here... come here

Did they get on the boat or not? They did

To where? Yee-Po

Yee-Po? Yeah

That boat is headed for Je-Mul-Po!

What? Je-Mul-Po?

One going to Yee-Po will be here tomorrow!

To where? Je-Mul-Po!

I'm not going to Je-Mul-Po! I must go to Yee-Po!

I'll write you a letter Deliver it to the prime minister

Prepare horses, we must track them on horses

Let me get off!

How could this make any sense?!

No matter what, she's a physician lady!

But it's the King's command so we can't help...

Do you think you're making any sense?!

I'm just saying... That's utterly unreasonable!

The head physician already takes care of his health!

A physician lady as the King's personal physician?

He's basically saying he'll disregard...

all the physicians, myself and the whole government!

We must stop this!

Jang-Geum as his personal physician?!

He probably just said it since Jang-Geum's achievement was great

Jang-Geum only has to refuse courteously

Even if he didn't mean it...

such a command ruins the hierarchy...

of the pharmacy and what becomes of us and the physicians?

Jang-Geum has been buttering them up for sure

She's not that kind of girl

Then how could such a thing happen?

Jang-Geum, the King's personal physician?!

That's nonsense!

Since she saved his life, the King probably...

No, it's unreasonable

A physician lady should only follow orders

She was so impertinent

She's so bad...

Have you ever heard of such a thing before?

Or seen it before?

But... what is a physician?

It's a person who earns the trust of...

the patient and attends to the person's health

Then it's only natural that the King trusts Jang-Geum...

but it's "unreasonable"? What's going on here?

Just what is going on?

He wants a physician lady as his personal physician?

Just what have you been doing?

I'm sorry, Your Majesty. But...

shouldn't you have tried to...

block him by all means?

It's not even worth any further discussion

I'm going to tell him directly...

and you must turn down his decision

Yes, Your Majesty

How could a physician lady be his personal physician?

Isn't she the one who received...

secret orders from the Queen?

How could she possibly hold...

the position of his personal physician?!

It's probably Sir Min's scheme to...

plant one of his people near the King

Plant a person?

Isn't that physician lady and Sir Min your people, prime minister?

Jang-Geum saved his life, and He has...

made that decision by himself

Then are you suggesting that...

we should uphold the King's command?

No past king has ever...

had a physician lady as his personal physician

And Sir Min, the head isn't even here at a time like this!

Just how did the court come to this point?

The officials try to be careful with the King...

and the high officials are taking secret orders of the ladies...

so how could the court be secure when such things are happening?

Isn't that right, sir? Gosh...

Didn't Sir Min and the physician lady...

got on the boat together? Yes, sir!

I don't think his resignation is the problem here

If people find out Min Jung-Ho and that physician lady left together...

Just for that, both of them wouldn't be able to survive...

and we'd be put in a crisis as well as the King

Everything we've accomplished...

so far would be ruined Then...

both of them must come back...

and Jang-Geum has to decline and Sir Min must...

settle this issue or else we'd all be gone by one swing of their sword

Is that true?!

Yes. So my husband went to look for her

What have you been listening to so far?

It's a good thing if you think about it

What destiny can a woman have?

She only has to marry a good man...

and have children to be happy

That's the happiest thing for a woman, isn't it?

Ma'am... ma'am... Jang-Geum...

What? The rumor has spread already?

What? What are you saying?

No... it's nothing

Actually, the King has ordered Jang-Geum to be his personal physician

What?!

The King has ordered Jang-Geum to be his personal physician?!

Yes, he made that order, but...

Oh, my...!

Are you OK?

The King has ordered my Jang-Geum to be his personal physician?

Yes

Oh no, oh no, oh no...

What's wrong? And where is Jang-Geum?

You have to give up everything for me. Is that OK?

You have to live as a peasant because of me, OK?

You have to touch dirt with hands that used to hold a brush. Is that OK?

We may barely manage to survive only on plants. Is that OK?

How many more promises should I make...

in order for you to leave with me?

It's alright. I'm OK with all of that

Even though it's all because of me?

That's why I'm OK...

Be careful

There's no choice. Get on my back

Come on... get on my back. Come on

Why are you laughing?

I'm remembering my parents

Why?

My father had secretly put stepping stones...

in the stream before my mother's path...

and my mother secretly saw him doing it...

and that's when she fell in love

Really? You should've told me before

Get down and start walking from over there again

I'll put down stepping stones You don't know about it

What is that? Get down

No... Please get down!

We can get on the boat over there

Let's go

How could...?

You must go back

Move! No! You must go back!

I have given up on all of my duties. Move away

You must go back I said, move!

I can't. Take them away

Stop!

I give you my last command

Move away from my path

Move away!

I'm sorry. Take them away!

Move away! Move away!

Sir!

Please move away

I'm sorry

I'm no longer an official or your superior

What are you doing?!

What are you doing with the physician lady who has to...

become the King's personal physician?!

Sir...

Follow us!

Is this how I taught you?!

I've watched you from your childhood

So I've been worrying for you

It's good that your will is deep and upright...

but I worried that it may snap in the wind

It's good that you're affectionate but I worried that it may...

dull your keen mind

You can't do this

Although I do acknowledge that love between a man and a woman...

can overcome everything, this is wrong

You know the effect of the King's command better than I do

It isn't too late

Change your mind and go back immediately

Sir

Do you really want to ruin your life and put all of us in trouble?

Many scholars have entered...

the government office from remote areas trusting us

Are you going to abandon them for a woman now?

Go back immediately

That's the only way for you and I and the rest of us to live

Go back immediately

Sir... please give me some time

Why you...

It won't take long. It won't

Please follow me

Can we send them away like this?

They will be back

Go back. I only thought of myself

This place seems like a good place for a pharmacy

That area looks good for a school

I can't be a stumbling block to you of all people

The mountain looks good...

behind the house and there is a stream in front of it

There are a lot of trees so it'll be good to find herbs...

and it's a quiet neighborhood so it'll be good to teach the kids

You were whipped by your mother...

for secretly going to school, right?

And you were whipped again for playing with boys...

and you caught rabbits even though she told you not to

Yes

And your father would always take your side

Yes

If it weren't for your father, your calves wouldn't have been saved

You wanted to learn even being whipped like that?

Yes. I don't know why but I was curious...

how sky could look that way...

and where the sun would rise...

and where the moon would set...

and why the rabbits weren't able to walk...

I was filled with questions

So the rabbits I caught always suffered a lot

If not now... if not now, we wouldn't be...

able to even dream of such things together

Come on... Come on...

I can't go

I can't go

I can't go

I'll return to the palace first...

You and the lady must go to the palace now

Jang-Geum should refuse to accept the command of the King...

and you must lead in refusal

Do you understand?

You must not refuse

There is a certain type of person Whether she intended it or not...

the person attaches significance to her work

That's your situation...

and you are that type of person

You'd become the only lady...

who has ever held such a position...

in the history of Chosun if you become the King's personal physician

I don't need such fame

I'm not asking you to take fame

I'm asking you to go back to yourself, to the person you wanted to find

You said you went to school asking why a peasant can't learn, huh?

You said you caught rabbits asking why a girl can't do such a thing, huh?

That is your true self And that is why you came this far

You do the things that seem impossible and you do it well

I'm not going back for your safety...

or mine or the prime minister's

Though such things seem great now, they have been...

occurring throughout Chosun history and it will fade away again

But you becoming the King's personal physician is something...

uncommon in the history of Chosun

It is only proper that you should be the one

Putting a person in her rightful position is a more just thing to do...

than making the prime minister's authority greater

That is what a scholar should do

That is why I'm returning

Please become the King's personal physician

So you're saying you went to Je-Mul-Po...

when Jang-Geum went to Yee-Po?

What else could I've done?

I couldn't dive into the water...

Then what should we do now?

If they find out that she left without receiving the King's order...

Jang-Geum!

Jang-Geum, the King has made you his personal physician

What's wrong with her?

She should be happy

Become his personal physician...

even if only for one day

I became a physician lady to take revenge...

but I wasn't distracted at all while practicing medicine

I tried very hard to treat illnesses

But no matter how hard I tried, I was a woman

I often had to practice medicine without the full trust...

of patients and even if I succeeded the scholar-officials thought...

they were giving me a reward by sleeping with me for one night

So I became rougher and more eccentric

People even called me a female saint

What I wanted wasn't some big reward or fame

I just wanted to be acknowledged as myself...

for what I do like men

You must show that physician ladies work hard

And that they are able to give prescriptions

You must show them that a woman can be good at her job, too

You have that ability and character

Do it even if it means only one day

Even if your life comes to an end

I'm asking you to go back to yourself, to the person you wanted to find

You went to the school to secretly learn again?

I told you so many times not to go there!

Eun-Sung and Yoon-Kyun can learn...

so how come I can't learn characters?

You said you went to school asking why a peasant can't learn, huh?

You said you caught rabbits asking why a girl can't do such a thing, huh?

That is your true self

But no matter how hard I tried, I was a woman

What I wanted wasn't some big reward or fame

I just wanted to be acknowledged as myself...

for what I do like men

Do it even if only for one day

Even if your life comes to an end

Jang-Geum, let's go

Jang-Geum, you know what's going on now, right?

You must refuse it

Why get yourself tangled up in this?

Just refuse and live in silence

Do you understand?

Yes. They say, you can't break a rock with eggs

Yes! Hitting a rock with eggs

You know things are really serious...

when she says difficult expressions

Madam!

Am I not right?

Anyway, madam, when will I become a court lady?

When there is a ceremony of course!

Are you going to do it by yourself?!

Jang-Geum, this will cause a big commotion in the court

I don't want you tangled up in...

what Lady Jung and Lady Han had warned us of

I don't want you to have to endure this commotion

You understand, huh?

A physician lady becoming the King's personal physician?

Putting aside the Royal Physicians and the judges...

This is nonsense!

It should never happen!

But her skills are so good...

If you turn down the command...

I'll take care of the rest, so do that

Sir, don't worry

Jang-Geum has enough sense to know what to do

Yes. She probably knows what she must do

It's something we can never accept

I haven't taken back my command to you

Become my attendant lady and assist me

The King wouldn't be able to do much if you tell him that

I trust you

Your Majesty! Please take back your command!

Your Majesty! Please take back your command!

Your Majesty! Please take back your command!

Your Majesty! Please take back your command!

Your Majesty! Please take back your command!

Your Majesty, all of the officials and scholars are opposing it

What are you going to do?

Please understand

Your Majesty, please take back your command

Chosun stands on the ranks of...

the nobles and commons, men and women

So how can a woman take care of your health?

It shakes the foundation of this court and our nation

Even the greatest, late King Sejong gave a 4th class position to...

lady Jang Young-Sil who was born a peasant for what she had done

Of course, the servants opposed saying it...

shook the foundation of the nation

But it was the most stable during his reign!

But that's...

But what?!

The reason why I gave such an order was not to shake the foundation...

nor was it to turn Chosun upside down

Jang-Geum treated...

the King's Mother and the Queen...

and I also heard that she saved people from the last plague

And as you well know she saved my life

It's not like a govt official job

I'm only telling the physician lady...

who saved my life to take care of my health

Just what am I turning upside down?!

And I've seen one aspect of her character which you haven't seen

I trust that she won't incline...

towards the Left Prime Minister's power or the Right Prime Minister's power

Your Majesty, but you're saying...

Why? Why are you saying I can't do this?!

I'm going to trust you with my health...

so become my personal physician!

Your Majesty...

I will accept your command

What happened here?

Go and dissuade Jang-Geum immediately

I can't do that

What?

I have no reason whatsoever to oppose the King's command

The arrow will return to us for sure

They'll say it's all our scheme

She accepts the King's command?

This is outrageous

She took care of the King...

and because of it, Sir Jung's name...

was cleared as well as many other people

Even so, no way

No way!

Why? Is it because a woman did something we should've done?

That doesn't matter

We can't accept this even if we have to rusticate again

Turn things around in a few days

Or else we will all turn our backs on you

What will happen now, sir?

It may be a good thing after all

Huh?

Everyone is opposed to this

Even the officials who obeyed...

the Right Prime Minister and scholars who obeyed Min Jung-Ho are against it

They'll destroy themselves and...

this physician lady problem will solve itself, too

King, what oddity am I hearing about?

Mother...

This can't happen according to the Chosun rules

No, it shouldn't happen

I do acknowledge her medical skills

And I'm ever grateful to her for saving your life

So you can just have her as a regular physician lady

A personal physician?!

Please take back your command

I don't think he is going to bend

Her accepting his command is the problem

How outrageous of her!

Your Majesty...

I'm sorry to say this, but...

What is it?

Actually, Lady Suk-Won...

You mean Lee Suk-Won?

What is it? Tell us quickly

She's close to Jang-Geum since they were in the kitchen together...

Really?

I've heard that the King and Jang-Geum...

met privately at Suk-Won's place twice already

What?!

Is this true? Yes, Your Majesty

How detestable...

What is this?

It's a letter of resignation

A letter of resignation?!

I have no other words to say

If it's about this physician lady, then take it back right now

I understand you, but this isn't something to be solved this way

So take it back immediately

Look what you've done with your own eyes

How does it feel to step above your teacher?

Sir, please forgive me

Teacher...

A physician that the patient doesn't trust is not a physician

It doesn't matter whether the person is a lady or not

So that's why I gave him a letter of resignation

And that's why you accepted the King's command, eh?

I know your character and your skills

But don't expect to receive any help from me

Though you didn't intend it at all...

I'm ruined because of you

Teacher...

If that is your will then you should go ahead

But... don't try to get our support

In other words, don't expect to have both of them with praises from us

Shouldn't we be resigning when...

the head physician has resigned now?

I know. We should let the King know...

by gathering our strength together

Hurry...

I'm done writing

Me, too

I won't write it

What?

What's wrong with the King's command?

What?!

People treat us like dancers

Even if the King gave clear orders...

if officials give us orders, we must go to such places

It's worse in civilian offices

So? So what about it?!

I became a physician to treat sick people...

not to be a dancing girl

What does that have to do with this?

This tells others that physician ladies practice medicine...

just like the physicians

This tells others that we too...

can give prescriptions just like the men

Now I see that you're bad girls

You've been taking the work of massaging the Royal Families...

making medicine and helping the physicians very lightly!

No, that's not it. Jang-Geum was more diligent in such work

You know better about that than any one of us here

I don't. This is an act of holding the physicians, myself...

and the physician ladies in contempt!

Here

Sir... aren't you going to write one?

What?

Everyone in the pharmacy is writing resignation letters!

A physician shouldn't take part in...

anything that isn't medicine...

You're afraid they might accept it without any hesitancy, right?

That's right! I lack medical skills...

and I'm afraid they might kick me out!

Do you even know my suffering?!

I know... I know...

Father, why did you give birth to me?

You rat! You enjoy my suffering?!

No, sir... Let go

Are you that great?

Are you that great that you have to betray...

your teacher Sir Shin and Sir Jung?

What are you trying to prove...

while making it hard for everyone?

That a lady can do well in medicine, too?

A woman can do something great, too?

Sure, I know you're talented

I know you read all the difficult books that even...

physicians don't read...

when we were reading our little books

And I know you select good bowls for medicine when we are chatting

But can't you do it quietly in the background?

Can't you live quietly...

fitting into the background?

What background? Where we put on make-up for...

His Highness or the Prince?

Or where we have to be careful of the superior ladies...

when we want to read a book?

Is it true that you had the King and...

Jang-Geum meet privately at your place?

Is it true?

That is true, but...

What?

Why did you do such a thing?

You must have ulterior motives now that you've conceived

Oh, no, Your Majesty, how could I...

And you did this not once but twice?

That's...

First, you got rid of Sir Oh and now you want to make...

Jang-Geum the King's personal physician?

Do you think you can become the queen by moving the King like this?

Your Majesty, that's nonsense

I have never thought about such things!

Never?

Then why did you do it? Tell us quickly! Right now!

Your Majesty...

Please calm down, Your Majesty!

She's pregnant

Are you OK?

Madam! Lady Suk-Won

The water broke!

Madam...

Jang-Geum! It's big trouble!

Lady Suk-Won's water broke!

Hurry!

Madam! Madam...

Jang-Geum, do something I'm so scared

It's a premature birth

What?

The delivery room isn't even ready

Shin-bi, ask them to prepare the delivery room...

and prepare everything else

OK

What happened? Why would this happen so suddenly?

The King's Mother and the Queen called her...

and harshly asked her why she had you and the King meet privately

She's delivering in her 8th month

She has high blood pressure, it's very dangerous

She could faint, or bleed a lot...

If things go wrong she could even die...

So she's finally put her closest friend in this situation

Madam, one more time. Give it a push

You must not relax now

Madam, open your eyes

Gather up your strength

Madam

Give it all you've got

Give it one more good push

Her legs are swelling severely

Madam...

What's wrong?

Madam...

don't go unconscious, understand?

Be strong

Your Majesty...

Your Majesty, it is reported that Lady Suk-Won is in labor

What?! Then it's a premature birth

How is she?

Not good, because of her high blood pressure

They said both the mother and baby are in danger

Really? How could this happen so suddenly?

I'm sorry to report this...

but the King's Mother found out...

that you and Jang-Geum met...

privately at Lady Suk-Won's place and she was asking her...

What?

Madam... Madam...

Madam...

What?

Then she's in labor right now?

Yes, Your Majesty She said it started...

right after they went out of here

So how is she doing right now?

Not good. It's a premature birth and high blood pressure...

is making it very dangerous

A little bit more!

One more time!

The baby's coming out!

Madam, one more time!

Once more...

Madam, it's what you wanted, a princess!

Madam

The blood isn't stopping...

Shin-Bi, go prepare the medications!

Madam! Madam!

Madam!

Madam!

Madam!

Madam! Madam!

What's going on?

Why are you silent?

What happened to her?

Madam

Jang-Geum, what's going on?!

I can't feel her pulse

No! No!

Madam

You can't die

You can't die because of me

I won't do it while killing you like this

I won't do it while killing you like this

I'm sorry. So please open your eyes, Yeun-Seng. Please

Yeun-Seng, please open your eyes!

I'm sorry... open your eyes!

Jang-Geum, she's back! I feel her pulse!

Yeun-Seng, Yeun-Seng

I'm going to decline

No way

I want to be a physician who saves lives...

not someone who takes away lives

Is my wish that great?

What? She gave birth to a princess?

Yes, Your Majesty. Congratulations

So is Suk-Won doing fine?

Her breathing stopped once, but Jang-Geum...

was there to help her through it

That's a relief...

So everyone is doing fine?

Yes, they passed the crisis

Jang-Geum's help was great this time as well

Yeah?

Madam...

Jang-Geum...

I'm sorry... I'm sorry...

Look... it's a princess

Don't be sorry

I'd be dead if it weren't for you

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, please take back your command

I cannot become your personal physician

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, there is big trouble!

Prince Kyung-Won...

Prince Kyung-Won is in critical condition!

What? Prince Kyung-Won?

What happened to my son?
