There's somebody I want you to meet.
This is Dawn Masterton.
Hello, everyone.
Dawn's going to be joining our team.
She comes from the University of Florida
where she's a specialist in the human body.
[Sean] Physiology, kinesiology.
She's gonna make us stronger, faster and better.
We're going to do some hypoxic training.
Some of you are probably familiar with the concept.
Basically, with repetition, hypoxic training
teaches the body to function effectively, using less and less oxygen.
Underwater, especially in big wave conditions,
there are obvious advantages
when your body can better utilize the limited oxygen supply in your lungs.
[Dawn] It gives you more time underwater.
And lives can depend on those additional seconds.
A perfect example is, when I'm at rest underwater,
I can hold my breath for 3 minutes and 22 seconds.
[Dawn] Now, if I swim as fast as I can,
that same supply of oxygen wouldn't last me 30 seconds.
So, the critical choice I must make, is how fast do I swim?
How long do I choose to make my oxygen supply last
in order to save the drowning victim,
or stay under the wave and get to the victim?
Choice.
It's all about choice.
So we're gonna do a drill called '๏ฟฝhold downs.'
Thirty seconds is the amount of time you have for each lap.
Choice. You can swim a length as fast as you can, for ten seconds,
come up and catch your breath for 20 seconds and start the next lap,
or swim for 15, breathe for 15, or swim for 20 and breathe for 10.
The more laps you do, fatigue becomes a factor and choice more critical.
Alright. Let's go.
You too, Dawn.
Me?
You're on the team,
-you participate in the drill. -Yeah, but I--
Or thanks for the speech
and the next Hawaiian Air Flight leaves in 20 minutes.
Okay, underwater till the end.
Then come up, I'll count for about as long as it would take
for the next wave to hit. We'll do it again.
-How many laps? -Ten.
Ten? That's more than the test requires.
White Zone is for immediate loading and unloading--
Okay, okay, okay.
Alright. Why don't you start over here.
Let's go.
[suspense music]
-[Dawn breathes hard] -3 - 2 - 1, go!
[suspense music continues]
[Dawn breathes hard]
[suspense music intensifies]
She blacked out!
[gasps]
Okay, she's breathing and she's got her pulse.
Give her some room.
Hey, you blacked out.
Whoa, take a minute.
[sighs] I'm fine. Do we go again?
No, we're through with this.
[opening theme song]
[rock music]
[flight attendant] Aloha. On behalf of all at Hawaiian Airlines,
we wanted to thank you for choosing to fly with us today.
Welcome to Hawaii. Mahalo.
You know, I'm meeting my Dad out here.
-You are? -Yeah.
Ah, we're gonna go camping, surfing, fishing, horseback riding...
-Oh, my gosh! -...and everything.
-Wow! -Yeah.
We're gonna have the biggest, best adventure ever.
My dad's a lifeguard. Hey, there he is!
Dad! Dad!
[laughs] Hey you.
[laughs] What did you do to your hair?
Ah, I woke up one morning and it was this way.
Aw... I missed you. Come here, aw!
Aloha, buddy. And welcome to Hawaii.
Cool, thanks.
Dad, this is Karla.
-[Mitch] Hey. -Hi.
He wasn't too much trouble for you.
No, he was great. Made the flight go faster for everyone.
-And I love your hair. -Thank you.
Hey, looks like you made a pretty friend, huh?
Yeah, I'm trying to talk her into having dinner with you, Dad.
-You did? -[Tanner] Yeah.
-[Tanner] She gave me her phone number. -She did?
[Tanner] I told her you'd be too busy with me.
-Aww... -Now, come on, the taxi's this way.
No, no. That's not the kind of cab we're taking.
-Huh? -That's the kinda cab we're taking.
Awesome! Come on.
-[Mitch] Hey. -Hey!
Allie Reese. I'd like you to meet Tanner Sloan.
-Hello, Tanner. -Thanks for this.
Oh, it's my pleasure.
Allie, aren't you a lifeguard?
Yes, I am. But in Australia, lifeguards are all volunteers,
so if I want to stay here, I have to have a job, too.
-Flying this? -Part-time.
-Too cool. -[Allie laughs]
I'm writing this one off as a training flight.
-[Mitch] Awesome. Let's do it. -[Allie] Okay.
[Mitch] You take the window seat, kid. Here's your back-pack. Let's go.
Okay.
Wow!
[Mitch] Yeah!
[Mitch] Waikiki Beach.
[Mitch] Check out over there. It's Diamond Head.
[Tanner] Wow! Cool!
Whoa, over there!
[Mitch] See that Lighthouse? It's pretty famous.
That's the place where the Trans-pacific Yacht race from California ends.
[Tanner] Oh, wow, this is fantastic. I didn't know this place was so beautiful.
[Mitch] Head toward the North Shore, huh?
[Allie] Okay, hang on. Here we go.
[Mitch] There's a place up here, just past those surfers,
where the dolphins come in every morning to eat right out of your hand.
Cool!
Hey, ah, you see that?
-I see it. -Alright, get me down there.
[Allie] You got it.
[woman] Over here! Hurry. Thank God. Help me! Please, come down here and help!
Come on!
[suspense music]
[woman] Oh, thank God you saw me. Please hurry.
You gotta help. I'm afraid she'll drown!
-What happened? -The boat overturned.
Carrie's still down there. She's gonna drown.
Calm down. You stay with here, huh?
Don't worry. My Dad's a lifeguard. The best of the best.
-[gasps] -[suspense music]
I'm a junior lifeguard, too, but he's a professional.
Has been all his life.
[suspense music continues]
Sit down.
Sit down. Sit down. It's okay.
[suspense music continues]
[breathes hard]
-She's not breathing. -[woman] Oh, my God!
Get back. Keep back.
No pulse. Begin CPR.
-One, two, three, four, five, breathe! -[puffs]
-One, two, three, four, five, breathe! -[puffs]
-[slight choking sound] -That's it. Easy.
[Mitch] Easy. Take it easy.
-Alright, that's it. That's it. -Thank God, Carrie.
-Thank God, Carrie. Thank God -Alright, alright.
[woman] Oh thank God, Carrie. Carrie, I'm so glad you're okay.
I told that girl you'd save her friend.
[soft music]
[waves sounds]
[Dawn] Thanks for meeting me.
I couldn't believe it when you stepped out of the pool.
What are you doing here, anyway? And how did you arrange this?
Through one of the international organizations.
I'm sort of on loan.
Dawn, this is not your type of gig.
This is a very structured, motivated, disciplined team.
This guy Sean, he's tough.
I've missed you, JD.
Let's get out of here and get a room.
Dawn, I'm involved with someone.
You still haven't been able to separate emotions
from what's otherwise...
...purely physical.
Probably just as well.
JD, no one on Team Baywatch can know about us.
Yeah. I got that message at the pool.
Anytime you need to talk, about anything,
you know I'm right here for you.
[soft music continues]
-[knock on the door] -Come in.
When the others arrived they were given an orientation?
-Right? -That's right.
You told them what was expected. Set up some ground rules.
-[Sean] I did. -I didn't get the benefit of that.
One thing I don't have time for is excuses.
Oh, I went from the airport to the swimming pool,
after a 14-hour flight from Sri Lanka,
before which I had taken serious quantities
of a native antihistamine
after being bitten by a green Lameeka spider.
I was sandbagged.
Now, I assume tomorrow you were going to tell me
I was no longer a part of the team.
You are a bona fide hardass.
[Dawn] That's great.
But what I wanna know is, are you also fair?
No. But if you want another chance, we can go back in the pool in the morning.
Done.
You and me.
-I lose, I go home. -And Dawn,
next time, if there is a next time,
you come to my office, not my bedroom.
Don't worry,
I will never be in this room again, unless I'm invited.
I came here because I think this training center
can make a difference. I want to be part of that difference.
Part of something good and valuable. Positive.
Something that helps people.
I'm here to be useful, in any way I can.
You know, in addition to a degree in Kinesiology,
I've studied in India
and learned amazing things about how to achieve the potential...
...of the human body.
Amazing... things.
I bet you have.
[light clearing of throat]
Okay. We need to familiarize ourselves with the local beaches.
JD has the assignments.
You can work a regular shift with the local lifeguard.
I kinda have a situation.
What kinda situation?
I ran into a friend of mine from UCLA, Cal Thomas.
He's here with the Americus Cup Boat, Abracadabra.
Anyway, one of the crew dropped out and Cal's got me a tryout.
-When? -[JD] Today.
They'll probably fill it with someone from the Mainland, but...
...it's Americus Cup, man.
-Make us proud. -[very light laugh]
-[rock music] -[waves sound]
This place is fantastic.
The water's so beautiful. All the different colors. Un - real.
-Hey, Rock. -[Rock] Hey.
Rock, I'd like you to meet my son, Tanner.
Tanner, this is Leon Keaweamokai. We call him Rock.
-Hey. -What's up, Tanner?
-Nothing. -Check the surf? There's a little swell.
-Looks good. -Yeah.
-You wanna go out? -Yeah, but I don't have my board.
Well, I got one you could use.
-Would that be alright? -Absolutely.
Cool.
-I'll be right back. -Mahalo.
Alright. I gotta go fill out an incident report.
You can go wild, but stay in close.
The surf has rips out there.
-It's not like the surf in LA, okay? -Okay.
-Ding. -Dong.
-[knock on the window] -Knock, knock.
Hey, I brought you your equipment bag. It has like your fins and your goggles.
And Nextel. This is really, really cool.
This is both a cell phone and a two-way radio.
It's Jessie, right?
-That's right. Jessie. -Owens.
Jessie Owens, like the runner?
Exactly, like the runner. Anyway, these phones tie us all together.
All you have to do is highlight who it is that you want to talk to
and then hit this button, right here on the side.
-[bip from the cell phone] -I love that sound.
-It's just like Star Trek. -[Jason] Hey, Dawn, what's up?
Okay. He knows it's you because it has caller ID.
and your name appears in the window.
Hey, Jason. It's Jessie. Where're you at?
Oh, Jess. Um, just watching the water at Waikiki,
right in front of the Hilton, with, ah, Allie and Brian.
-[both] Hey, Jess! -[Jessie] Hey you guys.
- Sounding good. I'll catch you later. -Alright, over.
You can also get the Coast Guard.
The, ah, Fire and Rescue, The Honolulu Police.
-Or, ah, use it like a regular cell phone. -Oh.
-Alright. -You guys are a pretty tight group.
Are we?
For someone just coming in.
Umm... Actually, we're still all a bunch of strangers.
Ah, well, except for you and JD.
Yeah. Except for me and JD.
Don't worry. He's not my type.
Huh.
Wow, lucky for me.
I didn't mean it the way it came out.
Good.
[very light laugh]
-[bip from the cell phone] -Go '๏ฟฝhead, Dawn, what do you need?
I just wanted to see if this thing worked.
It's working fine.
Thanks.
Well, I wanted a board, but this is a boat.
Awesome.
[Tanner] Oh, that girl's great.
[gasps]
[Tanner] That was great. You get so low on the board.
That was sensational.
Sorry, if I wasn't supposed to say that.
Say whatever you want.
I didn't mean to jinx you or anything. I don't know the local customs.
Local customs? Where do you think you are? Mars?
Forget I said anything. I just thought it was a great ride.
Are you going out?
-Is it safe? -What're you afraid of?
Creatures with blond hair and sharp tongues.
Sorry.
Come on, I'll get you in the lineup.
Awesome.
Are you coming?
-Mitch. -[Mitch] Hey, Sean.
Hey.
Looks like you've got everything covered.
I'm gonna go spend some time with Tanner, my foster son.
Listen, I, I want to talk to you about Dawn Masterton.
Problem?
Well, she's not to the level of the others
and I think it could hurt the team, waiting '๏ฟฝtill she catches up.
I'm meetin' her at the pool later on to give her a little test
and when she fails...
...I'd like to send her home.
No, no, no. You give her some time. She's got skills.
Skills we need.
Figure out how to keep it.
Alright.
Isn't that Rock's board?
Ah, yeah, he's a friend of my dad's.
Eh, my dad's a lifeguard in LA,
but he came out here to do the... International Training Center.
Have you heard about it?
Ah!
[coughs]
I can't get over how warm the water is.
If you can duck dive,
the channels this way.
-[suspense music] -[waves sound]
Ah!
Help!
[screams]
[gasps]
[screams for help]
Help! Help me!
[woman] Help me! I can't get out!
[Jason] I'm coming. Hang on.
[suspense music continues]
[woman] Help me!
[woman] Help me! Somebody help me!
[screaming] Ah! Help me!
-[dramatic music] -[waves sound]
[Jason] Hang on. Take the tube.
Relax, you are with me.
Oh, no!
-Hey, we're going the wrong way. -We gotta go out before we can get in.
-Through the waves? -The waves are gonna help us.
Oh, my God! Oh, dear God!
It's okay. I'm gonna tell you everything I do before I do it, okay?
[woman] Okay.
I'm gonna swim you in after the next wave.
After?
Right. Swim right in the back of the wave, alone.
And if we wait until the next wave, it's gonna hit us.
-[woman] Oh, no. I can't. -[Jason] Yes, you can.
We'll only be under for eight to ten seconds.
That's all you have to hold your breath for
and during that I'm going to hold you up, but not out of the water.
We'll still be under,
but I'm going to hold you up so you won't feel the power of the wave.
-[Jason] You got that? -[woman] Are you sure?
I've done it 100 times. Alright.
[both] One, two, three.
[suspense music intensifies]
-[woman gasps] -You alright?
[beach girl] Look! He's got her.
[beach girl] Wow! Look at that!
[breathing hard] You saved my life. Thank you very much.
[beach girl] Way to go!
[cheers]
Sit down.
-[woman breaths hard] -[Jason] You okay?
You're gonna be fine. Just relax and catch your breath.
-[woman] Okay. -[beach girl] Sure you're okay?
[woman] I'm sure.
[Jessie] Newmie, you know about this stuff.
Does JD really have a chance at making the team?
Well, a couple of thousand guys start off racing sailboats.
They train. They work-out.
If they're good enough, they make it to the next level.
Which is...?
The very top of the heap are the international guys,
and above them, the very elite.
Those are the guys that crew the Americus Boat, though.
Wow, do you think we could take the Scarab and go out?
-And watch? -Sure. Let's go.
Great.
d Here's how it's doned
d We chase the sun While winds are blowingd
d We tow the line This team definedd

[rock music]
-Are you ever gonna take a wave? -I'm waiting for the right one.
It's okay to be afraid the first time.
I just don't want to eat it in front of everyone.
[Tammy] Okay. Tell you what.
We'll go together. You buy. I'll plant it right with you.
Okay, Okay. Here comes, here comes a little one.
Okay.
[Tanner screams]
[both] Oh! [light laugh]
-Ah! -Are you okay?
Yeah, but that wasn't a little one. [laughs]
-But the fear is gone, right? -Right.
Well, if you don't get a big head, I think you're ready to surf Hawaii.
Alright! Hawaii, here I come! Ah!
-Looks like Tanner's found a friend. -Yeah, well he needs lots of them.
[Mitch] He's had a rough life for a long time, now.
He's due for a little diversion. [laughs]
Whoo! Yeah, Brah!
[Jessie] Is that why you brought him here to Hawaii?
[Mitch] That and a couple other reasons.
Yee haw! Alright, Tanner.
He got on that one pretty good.
-So, have you gotten legal custody, yet? -Almost.
Everything takes forever.
Being single causes a lot of delays.
He's still at the foster home, waiting for the courts to sign him off.
[Jessie] There he goes again.
-[Jessie laughs] -Look at him! He is the most resilient kid
I have ever seen.
All he needs is a chance.
I just want to get him out of the system before it eats him up.
-Mmm, I wish I could do something to help. -Me too.
[Mitch] But this is one I have to work out myself.
-[Jessie] Let me know, okay? -[Mitch] I will. Thanks, Jessie.
I'm going out to the reef break... alone.
-What'd I say? -Nothing.
-Then I'm coming with you. -No!
Tell me, what'd I do wrong?
It's not you. It's just me!
Tammy, come on. You could at least tell me why.
Tammy, I thought you were my friend.
Uh. Come on, why? Come back. Uh!
Tammy, I'm not letting you go alone. I'm coming after you.
-Thanks for picking me up. -No problem. How'd it go?
Oh,
I am whipped. Physically and emotionally whipped.
Those guys are incredible. They go so hard.
And that was just practice.
I can only imagine what it's like in a race.
Well, I admire your guts.
Taking a shot, trying out for something like this.
The most amazing thing? The sound.
Sails snapping. Lines creaking. All that noise.
At least you did what most of us can only dream about.
You crewed an Americus Cup boat, right?
I did more than that.
I made the team.
You what?
I made the team.
[light laugh] Well, that, that's great, JD.
My God. Congratulations. That's amazing.
To think I came down here to cheer you up. Now...
...now I gotta throw you a going away party.
Turned them down.
-You turned them down? -Yep.
Made a commitment here, first.
To Mitch, to the team... to you.
Alright. Well, I, I won't try and talk you out of it.
You couldn't.
Like it or not, I'm on this team until we finish what we started.
Let's get outta here.
Hey, you.
Hey, Mitch, you should've been out there today.
I did two jet ski pick-ups.
I have muscles aching that I never even knew I had.
By chance have you seen Tanner in the last hour or so?
Yeah, he's... he's over there, surfing with a pretty little girl.
Or was. Do you want me to help you look for him?
No, no, no. It's nothing. It's just that, you know, he's on vacation
and I'm workin' and I am...
An over-protective father. It's so sweet.
I'm sure he's okay.
Probably right. Anyway, thanks. If you see him, let me know, huh?
-Okay. -Thanks.
See you.
Dad, dad!
Hey, where you been? I was worried about you.
You gotta come quick. She says she wants to die.
Calm down. Calm down. Tell me what happened.
Dad, she finally told me.
She going to a hospital in Houston, tomorrow for treatments.
Dad, she's scared. I would be too.
-Does she have any family? -No mother or father.
Where is she?
Ah... out past the reef break.
Alright. Calm down.
Go back to Headquarters and tell them I may need back up.
-I'll go talk to her, okay? -Okay.
[Mitch] Go on. It'll be okay. I'll go talk to her.
[Mitch] Nice night, huh?
-[Tammy] I suppose you're Tanner's father. -Yeah, I am.
[Tammy] Oh, he sent you out.
He told you everything.
[Mitch] He told me a little.
Did he tell you that I'm already taking treatment
and how sick it makes me?
-No. -I hate being sick.
I know.
So, you are going to kill yourself instead of hanging around to die, right?
-What? -Well, that's what Tanner said.
He said you're so afraid of dying,
he thinks you're gonna try and kill yourself.
I'm tired of being afraid. Tired of not knowing.
I just want it to stop. I don't even want to think about it.
Just, I want it to be over.
Well...?
Well, what?
Oh, if you're looking for an answer, I don't have it.
You're an adult. Adults are supposed to have answers.
"Be strong. Be brave.
Everything's going to be alright. Don't worry."
Those aren't answers, Tammy.
Those are just stupid things adults say when they don't know
what else to say.
I don't want to go to Houston.
-You gotta go. -Why?
Well, because people like us, we're just not...
...allowed to quit.
That's why I know.
That you're gonna go to Houston
and you're gonna get the treatment.
You know what else I know?
You're gonna get better.
Remember what you told Tanner.
Face your fear, Tammy.
You gotta face your fear.
Ride the wave.
Ride the wave.
Thank you.
It's a big wave,
but I know you can ride it.
I'm gonna try.
And to you. I have to thank you most of all, with something special.
Dad?
-Yeah? -[Tanner] Do you mind?
That it's kind of private.
Oh. Yeah, ah, I see a friend. Have a safe flight.
It's not just special. I wanna give you something very special.
You mean a kiss?
That, too.
Now, what I really meant...
Awesome. Wow!
-Take good care of it. -Oh, oh, I will, I will,
but just until you get back.
[light laugh] Just don't ding it.
Bye.
Bye.
Wow, look at that. Awesome, huh?
Hi.
Aloha.
[flight attendant] Aloha and welcome to Hawaiian Airlines,
Flight number one to Los Angeles.
Okay, we're gonna sit on the bottom with weights around our waists.
You're gonna work one end of the rope, I'm gonna work the other.
-If you go up for air first-- -I go home.
That's right.
-You want to prepare your excuses now? -While you prepare your apology?
Oh!
[suspense music]
[light laugh] What's the time?
Ah, two minutes and one, two, three seconds.
[suspense music continues]
Help me, quickly! He blacked out!
Ah!
You scared the daylights out of me.
-Oh! -That was a reminder.
The lethal hazard that the lifeguard can encounter is the victim.
Always proceed with caution.
-So you didn't black out? -No.
-Then I guess I lost. -No.
You did what you were supposed to do. You acted like a lifeguard.
So, I stay?
For now.
