Sherry Papini reported missing. She has

blonde cancer, blue eyes, young blonde,

beautiful mom. This mystery.

What happened to Sherry?Friends saying

she was known as a super mom. She's just

gone. You got to wonder who did this. And

where was her husband at the time she

went missing?Something really nefarious

Yeah, so I just got home from work

and my wife wasn't there, which is

unusual, and my kids should have been

there by now for like daycare.

So I was like, oh, maybe she went on a

walk.

I couldn't find her, so I called the

daycare to see what time she picked up

the kids. The kids were never picked up,

so I got freaked out, so I hit like the

find my iPhone app thing, and it said

that herIt showed her phone like at our

end of our street. But she just drove

down there and I saw her phone with her

headphones 'cause she started running

again. And I found her phone and it's got

like hair ripped out of it, like in the

headphones. So I'm like totally freaking

out thinking like somebody like grabbed

her.

I took a picture of her phone on the

ground before I picked it up. When's the

last time you heard from her?47,

asking if I was coming home from lunch

from work, and I said, Sorry, long day.

What's your wife's name?I'm gonna like

you knock on every door. Siri. SHERRI.

She wipes female?Yes. You're

telling me that something happened to

her. Oh my God.

While I was en route, I was just mentally

preparing for what this case is going to

be. You don't know where it's going to

lead. You don't know how big it's going

to be.

Keith called me andHe

called in a panic, and

I fell down to the ground and

started sobbing. And

he had to get off the phone because he

had to show the sheriff's office around.

OK, what time do you-- did you get home

from work?I got here

probably right around 5:00, because she

would have normally been here. So Brian

wants me to confirm the location of the

cell phone when he found it. So it's the

south corner. So it was right there.

Sherry's cell phone was found about a

mile from Sherry in Keith's house.

Initially reviewing her cell phone, there

was text messages that were unanswered.

Helped some of the timeline with Keith.

By the time he found this, no text

message had been answered after 1:00.

I was pregnant and hysterical. My husband

wouldn't let me drive myself, so I got in

the car with Suzanne.

Keith's sister, Suzanne, and I were

driving through Keith and Sherry's

neighborhood, screaming her name.

Has she ever taken off for a weekend

without saying anything or anything like

that or gone hanging out with friends or

which mailbox?Look, do you have your

mailbox, Keith?Which one is it?And it's

three. That was Keith's mailbox that we

had them open just so we could see if she

was down there and collected the mail

before she was taken or not. But the mail

was still there, so we couldn't add any

time frame to it. This is

34 year old Sherry Papini. She's 5 foot

3, around 100 lbs.

Apparently she doesn't have a nice like

wallet. One of

the significance things that we found was

in her purse. She had cash, which I

believe was over $100 worth. If

somebody's going to leave and not use

a credit card, one of the theories is

you'd bring as much cash as possible.

What's upstairs?He does strapbooks and

makes cards. This is her portion of the

house. Not to be a dick or whatever, but

I mean, like, I think she's very

attractive, hot blonde. She fits like

like a kidnapping. Let's find her ring.

The big one?

Her wedding ring was off. The belief was

she took it off while running. So now

we're looking for the gray running suit

or the pink running suit. It will come to

my mind is a gray sweater with a pink

Under Armour. Do you want me to send a

still working. We're not going to stop

working. There's people going to be out

all night. The big search is going to be

in the morning. I'm just like super

freaking out.

I'm here on Oregon Trail in Sunrise. This

is where Sherry Papini was last seen

yesterday around 2:00 PM going for a jog.

She was later reported missing by her

husband, who came home from work and

couldn't find her or her children. The

children are now safe, but the search

continues for Sherry Papini.

I'm obviously, you know, losing my mind.

So if anything, I ask you, you've

probably already done everything, but...

Yeah, no problem. Never mind.

Ms. Papini was last seen wearing a pink

running jacket top. She's

described as 34 years old. She's a white

female adult, about 5 foot 4 inches

tall, 100 lbs. She has blonde

hair. and blue eyes. The family has

not heard from her, and she is

considered missing and at risk.

How large of an area are you guys

searching?At least a quarter- to

half-mile radius around where the phone

was found. Do

you guys believe that she was kidnapped?

Our investigation is ongoing and

continuing.

We don't have information or evidence to

leave that she was kidnapped or abducted

at this time. But that's a known fact

that that area in Redding has been known

for abduction. Everybody's just

wondering. Look at the statistics in that

area, the nearby Emerald Triangle.

The hotbed for drug cartels and sex

trafficking.

There are many, many missing women

that have not been recovered.

Of what about any suspects of person of

interest?For those of you who don't know

me, my name is Keith, and that's my

beautiful wife right there, Sherry.

Sheriff's office.

Well, she is still missing. I talked to

her. She's as sweet as she'd be. You've

heard screaming and yelling. Oh, yeah,

passing. Not paying, like not like he's

killing her or nothing, just screaming at

each other. When was the last time that

was?Pretty regular.

Been hearing some noise about, like,

arguments in the neighborhood. I can say

that I've never heard any arguments from

from Sherry and Keith. All right, thank

you so much. It wasn't

even a week ago that I heard him yelling

at her, you know, that he was going to

freaking kill her. And that was my first

thought, was that he's done something to

her. And I don't know that he has, and I

don't know that he hasn't.

Awesome. He puts on a really good show,

but she's an apple. You just

feel weird around him.

Nice. You know, never done anything

wrong. It just gives you that creepy

feeling.

think it's ridiculous. But then I stop

and go, no, there's fucking crazy people

out there and ends up being the husband.

you know, Sherry watches these like shows

I'm from the Chesapeake Sheriff's Office.

Yeah. Did she talk to you about like the

ins and outs of her life and relationship

with Keith?We had dinner maybe a

month ago. She said, you know,

he has told me if I ever try and leave

him, you know, he will-- he'll kill me.

I mean, she even like went down to he

will chop me up into little pieces and

bury me in the backyard.

That is verbatim out of her mouth.

Have you ever seen that sight of Keith,

just that, like, flash?No.

Mm-mm.

But I will tell you, she does tend to be

a little dramatic, a little

exaggerative.

She said that her and Keith had gotten

into a fight and that he hit her, and the

whole side of her face was all bruised.

Because we were at Halloween at our

friend's house, and we were playing this

ninja fruit slice with the Wii, and I

went to slice a thing, and I hit her like

right in the eye. And she had like a

black eye, and she'd be like, oh, what

happened?And I'd be like, she didn't put

the dishes away, like I'm making jokes

like that. And I can't even tell you the

people of the house I was at. Please. Oh,

because I heard a story and then

I talked to Keith today and he said you

were you were there and know what

happens. So a

couple years ago it's

reported that.

Sherry received a black eye.

And it's there's some speculation that

Keith may have hit her. Do you know what

happened with that or the story behind

that?It happened at my house

there in Redding. And we were

playing with the Wii. It was like his

elbow or something that did hit her in

the eye. So you were there, you saw it?

Yes. You know, we were sort of laughing

about the situation and how terrible it

looked. With this

investigation, it felt like the more

people you talked to, the more you found

that you were just back to square one.

I read Sherry's journals. I really just

try to let the information tell me what

it is. In all evidence, that's what

you're really trying to find is the truth

within it.

After they got married,

this is what she told me.

Basically, what he wants is a

1950s housewife that

cooks, cleans, does everything around the

house, but he wants me to work as well.

That is how she portrayed him, is just

Basically, a controlling person that

wouldn't let her have any free will.

I understand that Keith is a simple man.

Simple things make him happy.

Bring him a sandwich naked.

Simple. Keeps him happy.

And I was obviously totally taken

aback by this because that wouldn't stand

in her own past relationships.

Sheri creates different realities for

different people. There's, like,

so many sides to her.

With victimology, you try to have an

understanding of who somebody is,

but I just didn't have it. I didn't have

an understanding of who she was.

Days later, family, friends, the

community and law enforcement are still

looking for Sherry.

I was asked early on, even by my own

husband, like it could be anybody. It

could even be Keith.

My job in the East, I'm. I'm neutral. The

big scheme of things. I'm the voice for

Sherry, the big voice for Sherry, the

final voice for her. if it

was you. Like I appreciate these

conversations, but at the end of the day,

I'd hit you over the head of a baseball

bat if I need to.

At a certain point, though, do you go,

okay, it's not, or it never gets that

until we find Sherry and find the guy. Or

at a certain point, do you go, okay,

you're fucking cool, I gotta

go over this round. Yes, but at no point

will I ever tell you that.

No, I got it, I got it.

So there are people who say that they've

heard arguments coming from the house,

not saying on a regular basis, just that

they've heard, they've heard actual

arguments in this moment. I don't want to

talk bad about her, but you're kind of,

I'm not saying you're forcing me, but I I

want to tell you everything because I

don't want. We're not talking about about

her. Yeah. What we're doing is trying to

figure out who she is so I can figure

stuff out. She is physical. She will.

So it's not-- Yeah. It's not out of the

realm. It's not-- It wouldn't be out of

the realm. No. When she gets to that

level or mad, she she gets loud. Leave

me-- Stop! Recently, things have been

fine. Definitely.

We had, in the very beginning, we had a

little bullet. It was, like, a text

message. I met this cute guy.

I came across it. What the fuck is this?

We got in a big fight. I was extremely

hurt. I was like, I don't want to get

divorced. You know, she didn't do

anything with the guy, but I was like,

listen, how the fuck are you doing this?

You know?Because unfortunately we live in

a day and age where 70% of people get

divorced. Seems like the guy just gets

destroyed in all his 401k.

So I was like, we're going to get up

post nuptial.

So I went out and I got off. She's like,

I'll sign whatever, like, I didn't mean

to do this, but-- So let's--This is new

information and helpful. When was that?

After marriage, but before kids.

And then from then on, we legally

had to also keep our money separate. So

how does she get her money?Exactly. So

she was doing really well with AT&T, but

she was like, Go. When was that?

Last December. So

she goes, I'm gonna be a

stay-at-home home. I got severance

package. So she pays like the

electric bill and the daycare. So I said,

I'm not paying for daycare, you're home

every day. Makes no sense to me.

And then she got a boob job. And I was

like, no, keep them the way they are. I

think it's a stupid investment, but if

it's going to make you feel good. So I

wouldn't say she's very good with money.

At some point, I know that's going to run

out. So if if she did

decide to leave-- She hasn't

left. And she gets nothing. She's even

on the car. Umm

So-- Go ahead. Hey, Sheila.

What was important at that time was

finding Sherry or finding clues.

I text you back. She doesn't run with the

bottle. It's probably somebody that's

been looking and dropped one orsomething.

To try and not stress myself out

because I was pregnant and

my job was to

use whatever resources that were

available to us.

Just support services is out

here helping. We're just using a map and

we're doing some grid searches.

Safety issues. There are a bear out here.

There are a hog out here.

The longer that someone's missing, that's

a very critical time. The more people we

can get out there, the best chance we

have at finding her. And so how many

volunteers do you have?I think we're

probably up to about 250 now.

I just want everyone to know that

Keith and I are trying to hold it

together the best that we can.

The community was

amazing. Signorama in

Redding says they have been making free

signs to find Sherry Papini.

This is our friend. This is, as our GM

called it, our a tribe member. Hurley

says he's already put up hundreds of

signs, at least. I want to find her and I

don't just want to sit there and stir and

and I I have hope that she's still

alive.

We received calls from both the Shasta

County Sheriff's Office and the Reading

Police Department requesting assistance.

Shortly after it happened, if not the

same day, it was very soon

afterwards that it was all over the news.

There was a lot of online

comments and discussion

regarding this investigation.

It definitely was the most

scrutinized case. With regards to

the media, online sleuths,

tips, people had their own theories and

ideas of what was going on.

Those sleuths can be spot on and

sometimes they can be way off the mark.

It's been a rough few days for the Papini

family. The husband tells me minutes feel

like they're lasting forever. I'm coming,

honey. I'm trying. I'm doing everything I

can. And

I love you.

Bring her home. Bring her home. Does

bring her home.

Sherry and Keith have an amazing

relationship. There was no problem

between them that would have that would

by any stretch of the imagination lead to

what's going on today.

To just let you know what we're doing and

what's going on today.

We're running down all of the leads that

were generated yesterday and we're

opening things up. We're just we're

scrambling right now.

Over 900 tips were provided. We

were trying to sort through which ones

were relevant, which ones weren't

at a certain point. It started to be too

much. I noticed a person who

was different, strange. There was

this man standing across

from the mailboxes and kind of odd

acting. She thought she saw

a woman in the back of the camper shell

and that he made eye contact with her and

it scared her 'cause he was acting all

funny. Something about him made me think,

I don't even want him knowing I live down

this road. I think the

comments thatbothered me.

It was individuals trying to tell us

where to find her body.

It was the worst situation because then I

had to be the person to tell Keith.

You guys need to find the filter. It's

It's deplorable. There's There's no word

for it other than it's

bad. I

speculate you guys don't. I'm like, you

know, we got all this like local

coverage, but in my mind, I'm like, I

need to have, you know,

ABC News, you know, big nightly thing,

talk about, show a picture and talk about

it. And I guess that's not nationwide.

It's all over the place. So it is. Is

that what that just said?He's out there.

The frantic search for a missing mother

in California. She's husband Keith

reported her missing when he learned.

This is heartbreaking, partially because

of the baffling nature of this

disappearance. We live in a day and age

where it is hard to go missing without a

trace. I've worked several national news

cases. This one was different because of

maybe 20 or 30 cameras in the front of

our office every morning, seeing all the

tents and seeing all the reporters. So

that part created a lot of.

Chaos. The word out is that

you've got nothing right now. That's

correct. Our detectives are still running

down some tips and some leads, but

still nothing.

The kids were always doing arts and

crafts. She was throwing parties. I

remember the birthday party they threw

right before she went missing. She

went all out. They rented a hall and put

on the nicest little kid birthday parties

we've probably all ever seen around here.

She's she really is the best mom I've

ever seen. It's amazing. It's annoying

because she's so amazing. We call her

Supermom. The 34 year old described by

her family as a supermom. Supermom,

nicknamed Supermom, was last seen wearing

a pink jogging top.

A sign of a missing Shasta County mom and

investigators say they're not ruling

anything or anyone out. This is her

husband tries to prove his

innocence to detectives. right away

to a spouse. It was the husband,

actually, who used the Find My Phone app

to track down where his wife's phone was

found. It is just that bizarre mystery.

Where is Sherry Papini?

I've got to figure out, you know,

did you do this?Were you involved in this?

Is this, you know, some some master plan

that either you came up with yourself,

you came up with with a buddy, or you

came up with with Sherry?If the

polygraph does have one weakness,

it is that it cannot tell the difference

between a little lie and a big

lie. All it knows, Keith, is

that you're lying. We're going to

go over all the questions ahead of time.

They're going to be very simple, direct

to the point questions. It's not going to

be questions about opinions or feelings

or anything like that.

Did you participate in any way

in causing the disappearance of Sherry?

So what do I mean by that?

In causing did I?Did I?

Did she find out I was cheating on her

and I caused her to go

do something crazy?Did you

participate, participate in

any way in causing?

The disappearance of Sherry. No.

right now. Moving around a lot helps you

relax a little bit. And I'm OK with it

It's no secret you got a lot riding on

We had nothing except for her

phone and her hair.

Did you participate in any way in causing

the disappearance of Sherri?

Do you remember ever intentionally

hurting anyone?No.

Nothing made sense. Nothing was put

together. It-- It just--

we had nothing.

I was not involved in any of the search

parties for Sherri. I

physically felt like I was going to find

her dead body in those woods, and

I-- I really--

I just couldn't handle it. I just don't

think I could have dealt with that.

I can't cry because I'm mad. I'm

mad. I'm very mad

that someone took our daughter,

just snatched her out of the thin

air.

While searching for Sherry,

all I could think about was Tara Smith.

And how she

had left and never came back.

The last time anybody saw Tara Smith, it

was right here on this remote gravel Rd.

just about 1/4 of a mile from where she

lives with her family. It was

only a few miles away from

Keith and Sherry

because of the parallels to the Sherry

Papini investigation. We knew that he was

going to draw comparisons.

from Redding going out for a run.

While no one was ever named as a suspect

in Tara's disappearance,

police had a person of interest.

Troy Zink was contacted in the Sherry

Papini investigation,

but at the time, Troy had an alibi.

I don't even think he was in the state.

After Sherry, I didn't feel comfortable

walking to my mailbox because we

really hadn't experienced anything like

this since Tara Smith. That was a

really traumatic experience for

Redding. It's just something that

I think will carry with all of us from

that community forever. So we were

very-- as women in the town, I think we

were all scared. and worried that

who's going to be next.

I was a part of the Terry Smith search,

but, I mean, there-- I always feel that

there was another rock I could have

personally turned over. And And I didn't

want to feel that again.

I think we were just open to anything at

that point that was going to bring Sherry

home. We wanted to solve this for a

family that was loved dearly.

Knocking on a door, going up a driveway

that somebody didn't want us up.

We rolled up this very private road and

decided a place out and

had a couple of threats shattered at us

over a fence. Nothing

inspires the thought of guilt more than

somebody not willing to help you out when

you're, you know, looking for someone.

But, you know,Privado can be shut down

pretty quick with the right tools. I

mean, more colorful than that. I'm not

sure if

I would didn't get any official reports

of that happening. I know they're being

pretty rough or not rough, but being

gruff and maybe a little impolite,

just trying to get information, just

showing up randomly at people's houses

and walking into people's houses and

doing all of those things. Yeah, there's

a desperation when you're in the middle

of that fight. You're trying to save

someone's life. And especially

when it's family.

That's That's about as much as it can

choke a guy up.

If she was listening, I wanted to say

that we're trying.

Growing desperation. Because I know she's

screaming for me right now, and I can't--

I don't know where you are.

One morning, I woke up, and I felt like

she had passed, and I felt like I had

felt her die.

And that she was never coming back. I

think this wagon's for little kids,

honey. I can pass as a little kid. What?

Sherry and I are 22 months apart.

Grade school-wise, we were we were

really close, but

it was not an easy environment growing

up. This was our house.

Both her and I experienced a lot of

childhood trauma.

That's really difficult to talk about,

so... We didn't have very

much money, and there was a lot of

drug and alcohol abuse.

As a child, I was very much the

responsible one in our household,

and Sherry tended to

generally look at me as, like, the mother

figure in the house. We really didn't

have a sister

bond.

Sherry would come over to our house and

kind of to escape, you know, whatever was

going on with her parents and, you know,

especially the yelling. I did

witness, at one point, Loretta

grabbing Sherry by her hair, cursing at

her, and dragging her down the hallway to

her bedroom and telling me to leave. And

so I went home and told my mom

that there was always love in our house.

And I feel like she

wanted that and didn't have it.

WhenShari was around 16.

She dropped out of high school, and

she ran away. She was down in the

LA area for a while, and then she was in

the Bay Area for a while in her, like,

teens and 20s.

Those are my feet. Now I can see where

I'm going, sort of.

She was a couch hopper for a while.

So I'll just come out and ask you, do you

think she's voluntarily gone right now?

No. You don't think that, without a doubt?

Not at all. I don't. Maybe a

few hours, but no, it's not like

this. We're racking our brain on

everything. We

We thought of old boyfriends that weren't

so nice. His name was James, and he was

a hockey player. He was actually a

goalie, and I think for the Ducks. Ducks.

Yeah, and he was a little abusive.

That was down there?Yes. It was down in

LA. We met him quite a few times. In

fact, we went down there and we would see

him in their apartment. She's still

pretty young then, right?Yeah. 18,

19, 20. I would say I was

the judgmental sister, and

I don't think she brought her boyfriends

around because I would have gave her her

my honest opinion about them.

Oh, a little zoom in right there. Hey,

And a little kiss for the camera with

sunflower seeds. And then

when Sherry met Keith, we just kind

of had this sense of relief that she

had found somebody who was

well-grounded that she could connect

with.

Sherry's leading the way. Open

up. Not really. He spoke with me

earlier. They took off like a wildfire.

They both loved to look good. They, you

know, natural for both of them,

obviously. And it exploded.

Sherry painted Keith out to be her

knight in shining armor, that

he treated her like a princess.

And she felt like they would get married

someday and have kids.

We knew he was a good guy, that he came

from a good family, that he was kind.

She was so happy that, you know, that

they were soul mates and that they were

going to basically live happily ever

after.

Time going by slowly.

And their children don't know their

mother is missing. They're being kept

away from all this, obviously. And

right now I don't want to have to think

about telling them. So I'm not

going to go there. We're just, you know,

Sherry's going to be back before that. So

the very latest on that missing mother of

two, police saying the 32 year old passed

a polygraph test. It's a big deal that

the authorities are coming out publicly

and saying we don't think he's involved.

Now some police officials would say you

should never officially clear anybody

because you never know, except in a high

profile case when people are suspecting

him and questioning him.

ABC News has learned police have

suspended the ground search for the

missing 34 year old. Detectives now

scouring surveillance video, pouring

through hundreds of tips and combing

through her cell phone looking for any

possible clues.

At this point, after this last week or 10

days that we've been working,

obviously we mind you out. You're out. So

then now we're now we're at a crossroads.

We're either stranger.

Or known person. Or she walked out.

Definitely no way. Problem with both

is we're investigating either one.

Stranger, we have the FBI doing stuff for

us.

We received a call from the Shasta County

Sheriff's Department to ask us to start

helping with cell phone analysis.

That's always a really important piece of

an investigation in this modern age. Just

trying to figure out if somebody had come

through and picked her up and trying to

eliminate many of the phone numbers that

we had that we felt were significant.

All of the the data-- Is there

anything on her phone that you guys found

at all?Yes.

The walkout, it's a bigger possibility

now that it was day one or day five.

you have some time that we can talk?

Yeah. Through our investigation, your

name came up, and I think you know why.

So I'd like for you just to kind of give

me an overview. Give me an overview. OK.

About five years ago, I ran a

restaurant in downtown Lansing.

Sherry was there for a conference.

And obviously, she's freakishly gorgeous.

She's absolutely amazing.

Every guy in the whole wide restaurant

was flirting with her. I said, Jerry, my

name's Don, by the way. We had a

wonderful evening together, went to a

couple bars. She was leaving the next

day. And the two of us kind of

forged a relationship that way. We were

both extremely attracted to each other.

She was married knowingly, but she was

saying like her husband was. Like

the most evil man in the world. Can you

expand on that one for me?So we're trying

to figure out what with her life is,

what's what's truth, what's fiction. She

states that he's violent, he's abusive,

he's keeps her locked away at

the house, doesn't allow her to leave. I

figured it was because it seemed like

just a damsel in distress signal.

So we were. Engaged in

some text messages of like a hopeful

fictional future and that maybe continued

for I'm gonna say like three months. And

this is five years ago. Five years ago. I

saw the text messages and they were not

something that I was very proud of and no

one knows about all this, but who knew

this guy?I'll keep this between us.

If you give me a name, I'll tell a name,

but at this point, I

feel like I should be in the loop on

this, but I don't know. James, David,

and then. Something would happen like a

year later where she'd be like, Hey,

checking in. Are you alive?Are you seeing

bury her in the backyard. No way. That's

I got to stop thinking of those. It hurt

in my head. This latest string of

text messages has been about since April,

and it wasn't like a spur of the moment,

like, hey, I happened to be coming to

California like the day before. It

wasn't like that. They'd been, they'd

been communicating for a time.

Really. That person just happened to be

in San Francisco the day before she went

missing. OK.

There was no contact since-- But you said

November 2nd, I fly back to Michigan.

Next day, I go right back to doing work.

So then within those text messages is

that little line of--Pretty

much, there's something that works for us

to be together, is the the context of it.

So part of the theory, not facts,

regarding this, is if if this is what

happened, and now this is so far out of

fucking control, right, if you're on that

aspect, hey, I'm just trying to leave my

husband andFuck, he's on Good Morning

America. She's high. And

that's the potential. And is he in

reply, I mean, is there, is it like, we

should be together type text when it is,

or is it just, I'm going through rough

marriage and we should meet up?A little

bit of both.

Ah Not full on building up, making plan,

but

definitely conversations of possibilities

of stuff. So it just opens, it opens this

we thought this door was shut. Sorry.

I'm at a loss. Do not

let this consume you. I was-- I'm telling

you that the lockout is not the smoking

gun. It's a theory.

It was just--Painstaking day after

exhaustion.

It is taking its toll on me.

Anybody that we talked to that had

avenues that believed that they could

have found Sherry or found who did it, we

were talking to them. We opened those

doors and tried to walk down them.

Because so much time had gone by,

I felt my job was to help prepare him.
