Luckily, I recovered
the vehicle.

be extremely dangerous

and it looks just like this.

But it got me thinking
about a myth.

So many things can
cause that phenomenon

- of fishtailing
and sway.

It could be the wind.

experience with that.

If we have a vehicle
with a much larger

-wheelbase doing the towing,

you have a less chance

of experiencing that
scary effect.

What if somebody loaded
the trailer terribly?

-I'm not naming
any names, I'm just saying.

-In my infinite wisdom,
-What if?

I did something like this.
So, I had a rear engine car
that I went forward in

so I had all this weight in
the back of my trailer.

I had a lot of weight.

[Tory] You notice
what's happening?

Less weight

is on those back wheels
and now they're not

-on the road as securely
as they should be.
-[Bisi] On the road.

I mean, it,
it actually is like

forcing the back
of the truck up.

that's fishtailing.
[Bisi] That scary.

This is a serious matter.

based upon this phenomenon.

The myth I want
to focus on is this.

If we experience
trailer sway on a truck,

can we straighten it out
by accelerating?

Isn't that like the exact
opposite of what they say?

I'm pretty sure that

the safe thing to do is like,
hit the trailer brakes.

You would think that.

Let's see what happens
when we apply the rear brakes.

You can either apply
brakes to your trailer...

-Or go faster,

elongating the wheelbase
to give us some integrity,

and it will give us
the same effect.

So, just power through it?

-Well, that's the myth.

-And let's see
if that's possible.

Well, it's not
the safest solution,
but let's see if it works.

I might sit

too common phenomenon.

But is acceleration
the answer?

Is Bisi's hypothesis
a highway help

or potentially fatal fiction?

Since you've driven a trailer
and had that sway,

I've never experienced that
so I'm kind of curious,

but before I step
into that truck

I wanna make this thing
as safe as possible.

training wheels on this.

I know it sounds ridiculous,

but they use it for
highway patrol training.

Right now, I'm trying
to figure out

how far out we're gonna
put this outer wheel,

to keep Tory and Bisi safe
while they're out doing,

So, what we're thinking
right now is potentially,

to give us our width

pretty confident
that this is gonna hold.

I wanna put

It is extremely important
to improve

the structural integrity
of the truck.

We are here in an airfield

for a very important myth.

Can a truck towing a trailer
at speed

experience sway and that sway
is taken away by accelerating?

Now, to ensure its sway,

we have four barrels
of water distributed

unsafely on
the back of our rig.

[Tory] we've loaded
that trailer.

Well, good thing
we're out here,

there's not a lot
to crash into

except airplanes,

the training wheels on and
see if we get thing swaying.

We have affectionately decided
to call this truck Big Red.

Now we get up to speed,

which on the first run
will be an easy 40 mph,

then we'll ramp it up.

So, when we get this trailer
to rash around,

which is what
we're planning on...

Do you have the other nut?

I'm right here.

Those wheels will keep us
flat on the ground.

They're stabilizing wheels,
not training wheels.

Now, if you remember from
our experiment earlier on,

to initiate sway, we wanna
move as much weight as
possible to the rear.

And we're gonna use water.

And each drum
weighs 467.5 pounds,

and it's working because
10% to 12% of the weight
of the trailer

should exist on that hitch.

But, now with
all of this weight
on the rear,

we're not experiencing that.

The back of the truck
is now jacked up.

As a matter of fact,
we're already losing some
adhesion to rear tires.

So, I hope Tory
is ready for this

'cause it's gonna be
a scary ride.

With the trailer
loaded for a catastrophe,

the question is,

at what speed will
this specific rig
be susceptible to fishtailing?

Just so you know, this is not

-how you load a trailer.

The plan is to build up slowly

until they find that
sway sweet spot.

And then, for the myth,

try and straighten it up
by accelerating.

So, it looked like

for like quite a while.

and then, all of a sudden
it was swaying
pretty aggressive

and it was doing
its own thing at that point.

I was wondering
if you guys thought

we should go again?

trailer sway test, here we go.

All right, we're up to 50 mph.

Think about it, the weight
coupled with the violence
of the sway...

Because Big Red didn't have
the power to accelerate
fast enough

once the sway started.

what it takes to punch it out.

out go the training wheels

and in comes
a remote controlled
drive system.

And if Big Red's revs
are ramped up,

the trailer should

This is perfect for
the large scale.

Yeah, I know. I mean,
no one is gonna

to have their feelings hurt if
we destroy it, you know.

Even though it's hideous,

Wow, this is actually
a really great find.

But how are we gonna get
this thing to sway?

What if our weight
started here

at the front of the trailer.

If we build some kind of
a track system

with a cart,
we put the weight on the cart

and then as we start driving,
slowly ratchet it back
to the end of the trailer.

[Tory]
It's a simple system,
a wedge and trolley on tracks.

-It's like a roller-coaster.
-Yup.

[Tory]
But it will help
in a couple of ways.

This is the starting position
that we want

all the way closer
to the truck

and that'll push down
the rear wheels

more torque, we get up
to speed faster.

But then as we're driving

-we're gonna let out the winch
and this is gonna have
-Yeah.

2,000 pounds of water
in barrels

and as we get closer
to the back of the trailer,

hopefully we will see

-this trailer just start
whipping around like crazy.
-Yeah.

Because we just screwed up the
recommended tongue weight.
Tell him, Bisi.

This device known as
the tongue,

extremely important
when towing.

You have the hitch receiver.

You have your mechanism
that has a ball
that allows you to

attach your trailer
to your truck.

Now, 10% to 12%
of all the weight
should go on the tongue.

Now, push the weight backwards
and everything moves up.

Your adhesion goes away.

We're gonna have little
or no tongue weight here.

Definitely don't do that
at home.

Okay, so after towing
that small trailer,

there is no way
I feel comfortable
driving this truck.

It's just too dangerous.
So, what we're gonna do is
remote control the vehicle.

What we're gonna do is
pull Davis in

on this, the electronics guru.

Mount some kind of a gear here

with a chain system to a
motor, that way we can control
the steering.

We'll have a servo
for the acceleration

and then a linear actuator
that will be pushing down
on our brake.

On the original MythBusters,
we used to use

pneumatic cylinders.

-So that way you would get
a blast of air and it would
-Yeah.

slam on the brake.

We had a few cars
go out of control

-with our RC systems.
-Well I certainly don't want
that on my record.

[Tory]
All right, I'll start working
on the linear actuator.

[Davis]
Perfect, and I'll go get

the rest of the computer
put together.

So, this the main brain
of the computer
for our remote controlled car.

and what this does is
it will take our transmitter
signals through this receiver,

it'll process them
through our microcontroller

and then send out
the different signals
to the different motors.

So, over here we'll have
our steering,
we can go left and right.

This is our throttle
and this will be our brake

-and then this can be
our kill switch.
-[Tory] Awesome.

-Let's do it.
-Yeah, boy.

[Tory]
So I've just welded up
this bracket here.

This will connect
to the floorboard.

And then I'll pin
my linear actuator

to this bracket.

And then, I'll also have
another little connector here
on the actual brake pedal.

That way, it gives us motion
like this, which is what
we're gonna need.

So, we can stop our truck.

[Davis]
So, really what we're doing

is wiring up a two ton missile
controlled by our thumb, so--

-Two ton missile.
-[Davis] Yeah.

That sounds exciting.

Okay, when this servo
swings back,

it will pull this cable
and that will
open our throttle

and that'll be
our acceleration.

[Tory]
Okay, so we are set.

We have the remote throttle
and brake system in place.

Before we test it,
we just jacked up
the back of the truck

and we'll see
if our systems are working

-Are you ready?
-I'm ready, let's do it.

Two, we need a visual
reference inside the camper
for how violent the sway is.

So, with this truck,
I have a big problem.

While cruising
about 50 to 55 mph

can we get up to 65-70
and do it briskly?

The interesting thing is that,

these bottles have
a siphon tube that sits
at a certain angle.

Oh, so we have
to maintain that.

Yeah, I have to maintain that.

Seventy five horsepower
will give us another
35% more power.

Enough to give Big Red
the acceleration we need
to test the myth.

Davis is putting
the spray plate on

in between the throttle body
and the intake manifold,

to allow some nice spray.

All we have to do now
is make sure
everything's secure,

connect the lines
to the solenoids

and everything is plumbed in

the nitrous system,
the wiring,
everything is ready to go.

We're gonna purge the system
of any air

and also allows a test of
our remote control setup.

So Davis, are you ready?

I am, we're all armed
inside the truck,

so everything is gonna
come down to the flick
of a switch.

-Beautiful.

-Perfect.

Now it's time to move on
to the steering.

So what we're gonna do
is we have a simple motor,

we're gonna attach it
inside the truck.

It'll be on a gear

that gear will be attached
to a gear
on the steering wheel

If you were my kid,

this is what kind
of remote controlled car

you'd be getting
for Christmas.

The problem is,
the door is not gonna close

'cause we're gonna be using
this as a tensioner.

Oh yeah, we are tight
on clearance.

We could technically move...
remove this altogether.

That's what I'm talking about.

What I'm doing right now
is I have
a piece of angled iron.

just to make sure
that my plain,

sprocket to
the steering wheels
are all in line

otherwise there's a chance
that the chain
could come undone

and then that means
the truck's going
out of control.

So, I've just attached
the motor

with the sprocket that
will be controlling
the steering wheel.

No, I'm not crazy.

Our remote system
for the steering is complete.

We have our motor in place.

Now we just need to see if
this thing steers.

Three, two, one, go.

the trailer's brakes.

that is the worst thing
you can possibly do,

is accelerate out of the sway,

a bad situation
and made it worse.
