Wait a minute, how did you

- I jumped the gate.

- Well, I'm not well
versed in criminal law,

but that sounds a lot

Okay, look, I just wanna interview.

I heard they're remaking her film "Wake",

and I don't know, I just thought that--

that Ms. Abel, who hasn't
been in the film business

for so many years, wants anything
to do with the new movie.

Gosh, why don't you people give this up?

I mean, this is the
second time someone's come

to the house feeling entitled
to a tell-all interview

with Ms. Abel.

- Second time?

- Yeah, but the difference

feel a little underdressed

is, that's just a replica.

A prop master made about 50 of them,

handed them out to fans and fans alike.

- It's beautiful.

The blade is beyond sharp.

I must apologize for
what Tabby said earlier.

- Oh, I'm sure Tabby didn't mean it.

How long have you been a reporter?

- I'm not a reporter.

I'm a digital journalist.

- Oh, wow.

How long have you been

- Six years.

- You enjoy journalism,
interviewing people

from all different walks of life?

- Yeah, yes, yes, yes.

- That doesn't sound reassuring.

- I love what I do.

- I'm surprised from what Tabby told me,

I was expecting a little more tenacity.

Are you going to ask
me any questions, dear,

or should I be the one to start?

- [Lake] I guess my first question is,

how did you become an actress?

I mean, particularly, how did you land

the lead role of Theodora in "Wake"?

It's famously known that

after seeing your audition,

the director Cassie Wright on
the spot, giving you a role

that would lead you to win Academy Award.

I mean, you beat almost a
thousand actresses with,

what was it, a three minute monologue?

How did you do it?

- "Wake" was a lifetime ago.

My memory isn't as good as it used to be,

but everything about "Wake"
I remember clear as day.

(phone beeping)

- What is this?

- [Corin] Just a homemade
mixture of dried herbs

and flowers, mostly hibiscus
with a hint of lavender,

among other things.

- Other things.

- [Corin] Ask Tabby for the
recipe before you leave.

Brewing tea's more her
specialty than mine.

I just drink them.

- [Lake] It's lovely.

- [Speaker] Give me a sec.

- Thanks.

- [Speaker] Hello?

- Yes, yes, I'm still here.

- What happened to your hand?

- I've had this for as
long as I can remember.

- Okay, before this
interview goes any further,

I think it would be in
Ms. Abel's best interest

to know who you really are.

And don't act like you don't
know what I'm talking about.

I was just on the phone with Luxem Media.

You don't work there, do you?

- My name is really Lake Reed,

but I'm not a journalist.

- [Tabitha] See, what did I tell you?

No one is really who they say they are.

- [Lake] I'm an actress.

- [Tabitha] Oh, geez.

- An aspiring one.

I've done a few commercials
and a student film.

- Hardly counts.

- Look, I just really wanted to meet you.

- What for?

- She wants the lead role in "Wake".

- My agent booked me in
audition for tomorrow morning.

- Okay, no offense, but
you could hardly play

the role of a journalist.

What makes you think you can play a lead?

- I don't.

I just thought that maybe you could,

you know, call the casting director

and make a few phone calls and...

- What exactly would I say
to the casting director?

- Oh, well, I'm not sure. I
just thought that maybe you

could pull a few strings.

- You climb over the gate,

you pester your way into this house,

and now you pose as a
journalist all for a movie role.

- I'm afraid I won't be
making any phone calls

to any casting director.

I haven't been an actress
for a very long time,

and frankly, I don't see
why you would want me to,

as you say, pull some strings.

It's just on the list.

- I need this role.

- I can't get the role for you.

I can show you how to get it for yourself.

- I don't know what that means.

- I'm not offering to
make any phone calls.

What I am offering is much more valuable.

I will teach you the one technique

that got me the role of Theodora.

- Your technique.

- You said it yourself,

I was cast on the spot with
just one three minute monologue.

Now what the world and you
don't know is the frame

of mind I had to acquire before
I even spoke a single word.

Of course you're free
to decline my offer...

- No, wait, do you really mean it?

- [Corin] Oh, dear, I
always mean what I say.

Should I take that as--

- Yes, yes, yes.

- In my day, we had a technique developed

by Constantine Stanislavsky.

It was a method whereby the character

could be more accessible to the actor:

Get into the character's mind.

And that way the audience
watching, the director watching,

while even the camera's rolling,

will believe that you are the character.

- What do you feel when
you think about Theodora?

- Sadness, I guess.

I mean, for an example,

she kills herself to
escape her depression,

to escape the pain of her life.

I guess that's one interpretation.

Some people find it inspiring.

How would you access that sadness?

- Well, I would think about being sad

and all the traits of being sad,

like frowning and crying.

- Well, that's your second mistake.

No amount of physical traits
would add the least bit

if you don't properly feel the emotion.

You don't act sad.

You are sad.

In the moment, you allow the
sadness to fill your heart

until you can no longer feel it beat.

- Okay, I have to be sad.

Got it.

- In order for you to really
feel it, see as she sees,

think the way she thinks, or
breathe the way she breathes,

you have to find the
darkest moment in you.

- My darkest moment?

- When you felt the most despair,

the most fear, the most
desperate for everything

to be a faint dream.

How old are you, dear?

25, 26?

- I'm 28.

- Well, in those 28 years,

I'm sure you had your share of moments.

Surely there was at
least one that was dark.

- I don't think talking
about my darkest moments

is actually necessary.

- Oh, well, I am the only person

that Theodora currently inhabits,

and I truly believe the only way

that you will embody Theodora
is if you take yourself

to that darkest place
that I know is within you.

- Well, what if I don't have one?

- Oh my dear, everyone
has a darkest moment.

You asked me how I got into acting.

What I would like to know is how did you,

- I wanna feel something else.

Something that I've been
feeling my whole entire life,

something different.

And in order to do that, I have to pretend

to be somebody else.

- Well, that is your first mistake.

When you act, you don't
pretend to be someone else.

You are someone else.

Are you okay, dear?

What's the matter?

Do you mind if I just use your restroom?

- Of course.

was about to start looking

in the obituary for your name.

and I've gotten you at least
over a hundred auditions.

And hey, I'll admit, you commit.

I mean, you really do.

You've never missed a
single audition, but well--

- [Michael] You're just not there.

Your acting, I mean

Every time I send you out,

And like, I'm not trying

but you can't run from the truth,

because I'm sitting here in
my office right now trying

to think of reasons I
shouldn't let you go,

and honestly that--

the lead role in "Wake".

- [Michael] I've already pulled your name

from that audition.

- [Michael] I don't know.

I'm in this really weird room with all

of these strange uniforms,

probably costumes from her
movements or something.

- [Michael] One of the
most revered actresses,

an Academy Award winner.

Why would she just invite you?

- I have too much on my
mind to be offended by that,

but it's a long story,

and the short of it is
that she's gonna help me

with my acting.

the audition tomorrow.

- [Michael] I don't--

- Please. I'm begging you.

How fun for me.

- In the early hours of the morning,

the most peculiar dream came to me.

I was in an ocean all alone, just me.

I kicked my legs to keep myself afloat.

So cold and alone, I
looked as far as I could,

but there was no land in sight.

The water splashed against
the sides of my face,

and then my arms and my legs
grew heavy with exhaustion.

And that's when I began to sink.

Terror struck me like lightning.

This was it, I thought.

My death had come upon me.

It wasn't until the fifth
time my head went under

that I realized I could still breathe.

Yes, yes.

The water filled my mouth
and filled my lungs,

but I was still breathing.

How is this...

How is this...

How, how,?

- How is this possible?

So I sank farther and
farther down to the depths

of the ocean, so far
and so deep till the sun

could no longer reach me.

I became this, this insignificant pain,

this speck of life just,

just floating ocean.

I wasn't dead, I knew that,
but I wasn't living either.

I was just there squandering in the ocean.

Dark spaces.

Dark ocean.

My dark ocean.

And how did I think about it,

and it wasn't a dream after all.

(sniffling)

- I'm disabled.

I mean, Corin, That was amazing.

That was more than amazing.

That was brilliant.

If only I can act with like
1/10th of your talent, then--

- Not 1/10th, my dear, all of it.

When you recite this monologue,

To become a character, you
have to fuse every fiber

- [Lake] Bits and pieces.

- It was six months after
the release of "Wake".

The producers were very
surprised it was a success,

a sleeper hit.

I just got an academy award.

I mean, it should have been
the highlight of my life.

Then the crash happened.

Well, my agent was in the passenger seat

and he died instantly.

- Oh, I read that a deer
came out onto the road

and he swerved to not hit it.

- Oh, that's what I told the police.

Before the crash, there
was this cloud in my head.

I wasn't living, not really.

Fame and fortune are
strong and powerful things.

They're just superficial.

I don't know what it was,

if it was the lights, the camera.

This cloud was always in my head.

Even when it was quiet, there was no sun.

And when it rained, it rained really hard.

Close your eyes.

I'm gonna take you back
to my darkest moment.

Everything was black.

I could hear the sirens in a distance.

They were murky, like,

like a dream right before you wake up.

There was nothing outside of it.

Nothing above it. Nothing below it.

Just in my head with the cloud.

I must have lost consciousness

because all the sounds disappeared,

and when I woke up, I was
connected to all these machines.

I couldn't move.

And a doctor and two nurses came in.

I could hear my heart pounding in my chest

as they got closer.

Finally the doctor broke the news to me.

I was paralyzed from the waist down,

that I would never walk again.

I tried to convince myself
it was a cruel joke,

that it wasn't real.

I was dreaming.

I kept telling myself, wake up,

Wake, wake.

This isn't real.

Wake.

But I didn't.

I was still in the bed
and I couldn't move.

My legs were like hugs.

(stuttering and sobbing lightly)

- Corin?

Corin?

Tabitha!

She was talking about her
accident, and then I--

- All right, just go wait in the foyer.

Just do it. Go.

You're okay.

Corin, I'm right here.

It's Tabby.

I'm right here.

You're okay. You're okay.

- [Michael] Here, I'll walk you up.

So how's she doing?

- [Woman] There are
some signals I'm seeing

that mean she's getting a
bit worse than my last visit.

- [Michael] So how long
do you think she has?

- [Woman] She's pretty close.

- [Michael] Is there anything
we can do for her pain?

- [Woman] Well, she's already
on the next dose of morphine

for her size and body weight right now.

But even that will only do so much.

(speaking faintly off mic)

I called the casting director.

I rebooked your audition.

I still don't see how
you're gonna get there--

- Where did you get that interview?

- [Michael] I don't know.

It popped up when I got her name.

Do you know what else I found?

- What?

- [Michael] She has a fear of water,

and for her role in "Wake" they had

to build a giant indoor
swimming pool that was like up

to her chest to mimic the ocean,

jacked up the production costs like crazy.

But when you got that much pull--

- About the rider that went
missing, the interview says

that she never made it, but
she was here at Corin's house.

- [Michael] Corin, what, are
you like best friends now?

- Okay, listen--

- [Michael] What are you doing?

- Just listen.

- [Michael] Look, like I
have a meeting starting soon.

- Wait, just wait.

- [Jodie] Okay. Okay.

writer that went missing.

(speaking faintly off mic)

- Okay, what I'm trying to say is that

- [Jodie] There's something
going on in this house.

She seems to know my thoughts

It was, maybe I'm hallucinating,

but I saw, I don't know what I saw.

I thought it was my brother's watch,

but that's impossible because
I lost it after he died.

But there it was.

I can't even believe my own eyes anymore.

(indistinct)

And that's the scariest
feeling in the world.

I don't know what is this,

but I feel, I feel...

- What are you feeling,
Jodie, what are you feeling?

- [Jodie] Stuck.

(tense notes)

(gasping)

(glass shattering)

What happened, what?

- No, I saw--

- What?

Look, it's fine.

- I'm sorry.

that you talk about, yeah,

for me, it's not really a
cloud, it's more of a shadow.

- Who is casting this shadow?

- Who?

- Maybe I should ask, what
is casting this shadow?

How does it feel?

- Cold, I suppose, and far away.

Very far away.

And it comes up from behind me

and kind of feel like a doll, a puppet,

and it's playing with my strings.

- [Corin] Does it follow
you wherever you go?

- Mm-hmm.

- Have you spoken to anyone about this?

- No.

You're the first person I've told.

- Oh, well, then that will
be our little secret, huh?

I have a secret of my own.

The very first moment I met
you, my cloud disappeared.

The sun came out.

I could feel the warmth.

It was like a radiant fire.

Perhaps I can return the favor.

We can make your shadow go away too.

I wonder, what would you
do if your shadow was gone?

Would you still be hopping fences

and trying to get movie roles?

- Well, I guess I
haven't thought that far.

When you were telling
me about the accident

and waking up in the hospital bed,

well, I could see it in my head.

It was like I was there.

I could feel it in my body,

your heart beating in my chest.

I don't know how to explain it,

but it was like I was you.

- Then the technique, it's working.

That was my darkest moment.

For you to inhabit Theodora,
you need to find yours.

when I'm really stressed.

- Well, I'm glad I did.

- Corin, I'm so sorry.

I just thought that maybe
there was some acting notes

to what your definition
